Open Post | Wednesday, Dec. 2nd (UPDATE 6:41 pm)

Parnell Motley: Sooners are the hot team right now. So, there’s no doubt that the OU staff is definitely trying to latch on to the momentum of winning the Big 12 and a likely spot in the playoff. We have been told that 2016 DB, and Maryland commit, Parnell Motley (Washington DC) has set up a visit to OU for December 11th. We are not sure how the recent hire of DJ Durkin may effect this but I hope to catch up with Motley this week. – (Brandon)

Andraez Williams: The same day Motley is expected to visit, 2016 defensive back Andraez ‘Greedy’ Williams (LSU commit) is set to visit, as well.  – (Brandon)

Levi Draper: Keep a very close eye on this one…

    Draper news is exciting!

  • CPSooner says:

How many DB’s can we take?

    • Boom says:

By the sound of things, 18 – 22. Kidding aside, I have no idea who is on top of their target list.

      • CPSooner says:

Just seems like we talk about “maybe” taking 1 more DB if he’s the right guy, and then next thing ya know we’re offering another new one. Not complaining, just curious.

        • sracer says:

Coaches probably feel, if the kids are good enough athletes they can play both sides of the ball.

      • Brien Brown says:

Williams, Obah, and Burton are the only names I am really seeing as a legit deal for OU as far as DB’s go TFB also mentioned that kid from Florida yesterday!

        • Hi5s4OU says:

What about Clifford Chatmon..LSU commit currently

          • Brien Brown says:

Forgot about him TBH, but also TBH, I think I really like the first 3 I named more. Plus if Les is staying in LSU he may be staying as well.

    • Tony B says:

Not many more but in the Big 12 you can not have enough. IMO

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

    Eyes are wide open

  • James says:

    Right on!

  • Brien Brown says:

I think it was a matter of time but, I really think that Draper was always a silent commit to the Sooners at heart mean maybe the commitment to OSU was a move inspired by his parents to maybe help get the OU ball moving a lil more who knows. But, think by all I have read Draper was an OU kid from day 1 and I fully expect he will be a Sooner before long!

  • Matthew Stevens says:

    !!!!!

  • Stephen says:

    Draper to OU confirmed.

    • CPSooner says:

I was just going to announce that….gotta be quick to beat Esco around here….great job Jordan!

    • Brien Brown says:

LOL I heard that he was most likely heading the JUCO route cause of grades. But, if he wants to be a Sooner fine if not whatever give me Price over him!

    • Gary Robbins says:

I hope OU is in his top 5. Maybe he will announce when he expects to make it final. Moore and E.J. Price would complete the offensive line for 2016.

  • AMKing00 says:

Huge news that OU is getting a visit from Andraez Williams. Saw him at a camp setting in the summer and man kid has great length at the pos & unbelievable ball skills.

    • Brien Brown says:

Would you rather have him or Eboh I think thats right the kid from Texas?

      • AMKing00 says:

Got to go with Williams if I’m OU. Like Eboh though too, good kid.

        • Brien Brown says:

Well Williams sounds like a stud but so does Eboh so I’ll take either one, hear that Brandon Burton kid is a stud too tho but, think he is more of a Safety.

        • soonerthunder says:

Eboh takes a guy away from UT while at same time we get him. That’s more valuable to OU IMO.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

I’m still greedy for BOOMS. Gimme some. Gimme some.

  • RBear says:

    Just feel like saying this,

    I Love OU.

This program, particularly the football team, has provided me with so many years of satisfaction; that distraction from the real world that we all need.

There’s so much about the Sooners to be proud of that any list could never be complete- there’s nothing like that feeling when you see them run onto the field in those classic uni’s that ooze tradition, pride and success. This team strikes fear into the hearts of their opponents as soon as they hit the field.

Here’s to many more years of enjoying the success of our favorite distraction and sharing them with fans like those found here at TFB.

    BOOMER!!!

    • Cush Creekmont says:

      SOONER…of course!

    • metzker says:

Bear I am so proud of this team and our coach’s.However far we go this year will not change that BOOMER FREAKING SOONER! EDIT win it allllllllll

  • Scott says:

It seems like OU will only take 2 or 3 LBS in 2017. ( Draper , Hines , Browning )

  • leatherneck1061 says:

I must have missed something. Did Draper decommit from the pukes?

  • Tim A says:

Who is DJ Durkin – recent hire where? I love the kids OU is signing, but seems like heavily weighted toward defense and especially DB’s. Coaches know what they are doing and need of course, but I sure hope they still land the stud offensive/skills players (i.e. the Mixon’s, Perine’s and Shepard’s of the world – although I know they don’t grow on trees) that put points on the board and win games. Boomer!

  • leatherneck1061 says:

It’s pretty exciting to think about what kind of recruiting edge we could have if you combine all the cool renovations under way with NC #8. Get all starry eyed just thinking about it 😉

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Man, if you’re not listening to the San Bernardino police scanner right now you’re missing out. Shoot out with some guys in a vehicle and one officer down. Crazy.

  • Gary Robbins says:

    Just a feeling for 2016.
    3 commits in December
    3 commits in January
    2 commits on signing day
If OU has more than 20 they as usual know who might be leaving. That works out to about 1 per week. Now I can sit back and relax for the next couple months.
    Need 1 for this week.

    • Brien Brown says:

I think even the 2 on signing day are silent commits already and the coaching staff is aware and just not saying anything perhaps the same with a few kids playing in All-American games coaches may know and let them have their moment to announce on TV!

  • BoomerDave says:

The 2 most devastating things that happened to the Sooners this past year, both turned out to be blessings in disguise.
One was the loss to Texas. Without this loss, I can’t imagine we would be in the freaking playoffs! We were floundering, not playing up to our potential. The loss flipped a switch like nothing I’ve ever seen.
The other was the loss of Monty. We saw the type of talent that he signed, although to be fair, none of them have produced anything to this point, but I expect great things in the future from many of them. But the Diron Reynolds hire has turned out to be a godsend. According to Dusty, who knows a little about DL play, this is the unit that has seen the most improvement. He can’t say enough about their improved technique and use of their hands. In fact he says their technique is night from day different. He is creating future NFL lineman with other great ones in line waiting their turn. When the NFL comes calling for his players, the recruits will follow.

    • soonerthunder says:

And, our losses last year have too. If we’d won even one more game, not sure we’d hired new coaches.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I think Lincoln Riley goes to South Carolina sadly. He’s very smart. He adapts well and he knows the recruiting area. I know this happens all of the time but why can’t they wait until the Bowl games are completely over. If we lose because of a stagnant offense because Riley is gone I’m gonna be furious. I’d rather go 8-5 again rather than go 11-1 only to lose because our coordinator gets poached from us. This is just a distraction we don’t need.

    • RBear says:

Maybe, just maybe SC is tired of visors.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I bet they take Muschamp instead due to experience as HFC. But if he turns it down it might be tough for LR to turn down millions of dollars. We’ll see how it plays out.

    • BoomerDave says:

Have they even offered him the job? Didn’t think so.

    • Brent says:

Still think Venables is their best fit.

      • Tom Turman says:

I think Venables goes to Kansas State soon. Snyder doesn’t have many years left there.

        • DrewChubbs says:

I honestly believe Snyder didn’t want to poach him from Stoops when he retired the first time. Now that it wont affect Stoops directly, except for one Saturday each season, BV looks like a better candidate for KSU.

    • Mizuno44 says:

“Not so fast, my friend”. Riley may not have expected this much success, so early, and it makes sense he would be on many AD’s short lists. I’m not convinced he thinks of himself as being ready to take over an entire program in a major conference. I would wish him well if he departs, but my money is on him staying and enjoying a few more years of success as an OC under Coach Stoops.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Doesn’t he have to be offered first?

    • JD says:

They don’t wait because they try to get someone settled in asap to work the recruiting trail

  • Dustin says:

Anybody going to the basketball game tomorrow?

  • Don Carmichael says:

I think people are really underrating the SC job. South Carolina obviously doesn’t have an amazing winning tradition, but they rank about 20 in revenue, coach salaries, stadium size, and recruiting, which are much more relevant factors. Since there’s no way Riley will be getting a head-coaching job at a traditional powerhouse in the next couple years, the SC job is a great opportunity for him. That said, I doubt SC actually offers him.

    • RBear says:

I’m only playing it down because I don’t want it to be true

    • Recondo says:

I agree with all this. SC is a great opportunity for a young coach but I think they’ll go with a SEC hire with a longer track record. Looks like Miami is going to hire Richt. There are some other P5 schools available but I haven’t heard LR mentioned as a candidate for those and I can’t think of any as good as SC off the top of my head.

    • Nate Broadus says:

If Lincoln Riley wants to be a head coach now with a chance to jump to a traditional powerhouse, he would be better served going the mid major route. The expectations are more manageable, he’ll have a better chance of immediate success and should he have said success his resume as a head coach would appeal to a bigger school.

South Carolina is in a tough spot. Even under Spurrier they were only marginal contenders outside of 2 years. The expectations are also much higher in the SEC, with much more demand for immediate gratification, so to speak.

    • paganpink says:

So.. As long as he’s OK with losing pretty frequently they will pay him a lot of money and put him in a big nice stadium for those big game close losses. What a life. He’ll have it made as long as he’s not one of those wacky old school dudes who thinks that other then taking care of your players, winning is the most important thing. I saw a mention on one of their fan sites today that they need to be reasonable about the expectations and not be pushing for National championships and running off good coaches just because they don’t get them there. So you were dead on.

      • SoonerSpock says:

Don’t forget that South Carolina went 33-6 2011-2013 going 11-2 each season. Winning their bowl game each year. Had wins over Nebraska, Michigan and Wisconsin. USC is not a bad job. Spurrier and Holtz would not have taken the job unless they saw the opportunity to win and both improved the program.

    • Bob Edwards says:

So Bob said “There is a bigger piece of cake?” The part about LR doesn’t appear to be part of the quote. This doesn’t sound like Bob really said anything about LR. You do realize that is not an official OU account?

      • Rick says:

I didn’t realize that when I posted it Bob, but you are right.

      • Brien Brown says:

Agreed it doesn’t seem to really run together like it was a different conversation but could be wrong!

      • Sooner Ray says:

I’m not seeing that Bob has said anything publicly.

        • Bob Edwards says:

It looks like the guy took something Bob said and added some stuff about LR.

          • Brad Warren says:

Bob was quoted after winning big 12 that there’s a bigger piece of cake still out there, meaning the national title.

      • Rick says:

I jumped on that tweet, it looked official, but on closer inspection the site says not affiliated with the school.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Welcome to the Internet. If you’ve been around long enough you’ll get caught by something like that. I know I have.

          • Rick says:

I thought I learned my lesson last time. The site has a lot of followers that we know, TFBers, the paid site guys, even some of the OU coaches so it must be some source of information, but that tweet was definately a hook.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Not sure if the guy intended that way, but it is pretty deceptive.

          • Swanny says:

He’s usually on his game. I’d trust what they post honestly.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

We all have. No shame. Just learn your lesson and be careful.

    • JD says:

He’s right..if Riley stays a few years and our offense is humming then he could either take over the reins or land a job at a top program…the nfl could come looking as well..if he goes their and struggles he would be back to square one

    • brainpimp says:

      That’s Unpossible! SFTU says so!

    • Gurry says:

So, I’m watching the Stoops show with Dean, and “There is a bigger piece of cake or there” is in reference to the CFP/National Championship. Direct quote. Whoever did this is a tool and looking for retweets…

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

We need to start making these a 5 million dollar buyout.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

We’d never get a coach to come here. They have aspirations of moving up too. Sometimes it takes awhile for them to get those offers, and sometimes it doesn’t (Leach/Riley).

    • Brad Warren says:

I am confident we will keep Riley and get on with playoff run. Muschamp will be hired tomorrow. Just my gut.

      • RBear says:

Enjoyed watching Muschamp giving the refs hell on the sidelines during the Bama game- dude has some fight to him.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

That is the biggest thing we have working in our favor. I can’t imagine Riley wants to be a distraction, or miss, the Playoff run. Would SC wait on him? That is a long time to wait.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

Really hoping they hire Will Muschamp.

      • Clint Lenard says:

Same here, but it seems absurd that a struggling program would hire a guy that left a successful program struggling.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Me too. Sounds like if they offer, he might be gone. Wouldn’t blame him either, I suppose. That is a good job. On par with any job any other OU assistant has left OU (under Bob) for.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

“(Riley) wants to be a head coach and South Carolina is too good of a job to pass on,” he said.

      That’s Unpossible! brainpimp says so!

      • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, lets give that quote a little more context.

“Sources in the coaching community and within the Gamecocks football program believe Muschamp is the frontrunner.

An Oklahoma source was not aware of any imminent departure by Riley, but believed the 32-year old would have high interest in the Gamecocks position.

“(Riley) wants to be a head coach and South Carolina is too good of a job to pass on,” he said.”

        • Boomer4life says:

          Perspective

        • SoonerfanTU says:

What kind of context is that? If offered, SC isn’t the kind of job that Riley would likely pass up, which is what I’ve been saying all day. I never said he’d for sure be offered. But if he is, I don’t see him saying no, unless he wants to wait for the Playoffs to finish and SC doesn’t. That might be the deal breaker that saves OU.

          • Bob Edwards says:

The problem is this is some random “source” saying it, not Riley. The way you quoted the article it sounds like Riley saying it. The way the article says it is that some “source” that doesn’t seem to know anything about the situation thinks it’s too good to pass up.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

I copied it straight from the article. I see what you are saying, but that isn’t how it would read if Riley were saying it. Sorry for the confusion.

        • RBear says:

Yeah, yeah, yeah… no one EVER said the media prints the gospel truth, especially this time of the year. It’s all speculation until it’s fact right?

Just passing on some of the hub-bub surrounding the situation- pointing out that it’s not a fact (yet at least) is like shooting ducks in a barrel.

        • Mason says:

Source was not aware of any imminent departure by Riley, but *believed* the 32-year old would have high interest in the Gamecocks position.

As an OU alumni, I *believe* Riley is staying. See how that works? I honestly don’t think he will leave. He will wait another year. He will have Mayfield, Perine, Mixon, and plenty of others back, and that will only build his resume for a better job than SC.

      • Boomer4life says:

        That’s stupid.

  • Clint Lenard says:

Every class has a kid that recruits hard and those kids are usually the special players. I’ve noticed Chanse is that kid this year.

  • RBear says:

For those out there shaking their heads at any and all reporting being done, or “sources” being quoted as to what LR is doing, may or may not do- if it’s any consolation, local SC papers have very little if anything on this, at all. It’s just not a hot topic to them in SC I guess like it is here.

AND, the hot ticket in those parts is currently Clemson who just happens to be #1 right now- it’d be a tough gig to recruit against that right off the bat eh?

Personally, I think LR stays put but you never know.

    • SamSooner says:

      RBear, I hope you’re right.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I think Riley enjoys playing with the toys he is afforded here. He also knows his stock rises immensely with championships.

      • Brien Brown says:

Yea plus he can’t get the same kids that come to OU to go to SC, mean even the ole Ball coach had a tough time, sure he had some studs but, let me see OU OC or head coach at the 7th-8th best program in the SEC, I’d stay the OC!

    • EasTex says:

I haven’t commented on the Riley matter and will continue not to do so. 🙂

      • Sooner Ray says:

        Thanks for commenting. 🙂

      • soonerbred4ever says:

I was thinking about you saying you liked to watch Jay Leno’s Garage. I just watched the episode featuring his 63 Chrysler turbo. I actually got to drive one of them in the fall of 64′,my freshman year of college. One my friends in my dorm had a relative coming to pick him up in it. He asked if I wanted go and the relative asked if I wanted to drive it. Took me about a nano second to say yes. As it turned out it was the experience of a lifetime.

  • Brien Brown says:

This is what happens when you get good coaches and think we all knew in reality that Riley was going be a HOT name and he is, I do hope he stays and that it all works in OUr favor, but, if not good for him, Riley does deserve some credit, but, the QB was better than last years, Shepard stayed healthy, the D played so much better, it’s not just one guy that made it happen and if he leaves Stoops will look for another guy to come in. I respect LR as much as any body but next guy up is what I say, and if he thinks he can go win at SC if it is offered than let him try, name any coach under Stoops that’s went on to have the same success as a HC that Stoops has and you can’t there is a track record that you are better off being apart of winning tradition than trying to start one!

    • Sooner Ray says:

When you are a top program, you hire coaches that you hope are good enough to be desirable to others. It’s the same as recruiting players that are good enough to go pro early. You just win and reload.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

SC is a good, potentially mid-upper level SEC job. I don’t think he could reasonably expect a better job as a first-time head coach. Yes, he could hang around a few years and hope to get an Oklahoma, like BS did, but he could prove himself at SC and still get the “Oklahoma” offer in a few years.

I more surprised that the SC team is looking his way. Nothing against Riley, but he’s been in a top tier program for exactly 12 games and his side of the ball has produced at a championship level for 7 of those games. Is he really ready for this level of head coaching position? I’d be surprised that SC is considering him this seriously.

      • Brien Brown says:

I agree as a 1st job it is nice but, I also agree 100% with why would SC want him unless it really is a whole SEC vs. Bob Stoops deal lol! But, yea I think he needs more time to prove himself at the Elite level if OU has a run of this sort the next year and O plays lights out 13 of 13 games maybe then or 2 years of this team hasn’t lost a beat I can see that then also, but like you said not after 11 games and in that 7 of them have been really good 4 where lack luster especially the Texas game!

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I think they are serious because the SEC is slowly adapting Big 12 offensive play. LSU will make offensive changes in this direction, Bama has tried to get a passing attack as well. Ole Miss already close…But LR would do well to stay with Baker coming back. Head coach in waiting and a raise? But Cale Gundy has been the backbone for years…What do you do?

        • SoonerinLondon says:

I just can’t see HC in waiting with such a small resume. I think he’s great, but as an OU fan I’d be a little uncomfortable with him moving up that quickly.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

True. While Kevin Wilson has earned a bit of respect at Indiana, he will not reach the pinnacle there. Someone ought to make a list of all of Bob’s assistants and where they went and the success or lack there of, after taking another job.

      • Brien Brown says:

        Leach@ TT had some success
Mangino@ KU did lead them to an Orange Bowl win which is amazing
Kevin Sumlan@ Houston did good enough to get him the A&M job
Wilson@ Indiana like you said doing ok
Pelini@ Can’t remember where he went so obviously wasn’t an impact
Mike@ Arizona he had some good years but wasn’t enough

May be missing a few but that’s what I can remember

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

          • Brien Brown says:

        • Sooner_Ace says:

wasn’t Pelini here a “one and done” kinda thing then on to LSU?

  • Brien Brown says:

  • Alex says:

My deal with Riley is this… When you’re this young and you accept a head coaching job the pressure is on you from the get go. If he has 1-2 disappointing seasons he’s gone and may not get a head coaching job again. I think he stays with OU at least 3 more years and the takes a stab as the boss.

  • aklibtard says:

If LR wants to take a HC job, then he should do it at a Group of 5 team. It’d be way better for him to get his feet wet in a lesser conference with lesser expectations, than to go straight to a conference like the SEC. There is just so much to learn about being a HC that is different from being a coordinator. He moved up from ECU to OU as a coordinator. He learned how to do all the “other-than-coaching” things at ECU so he hit the ground running at OU. LR should do the same thing as a head coach. Start in the minor league before moving up to the majors.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

This. I have no doubt that LR will be a fantastic HC someday, but here’s the reality of the situation: Neither Lou Holtz nor Steve Spurrier, two of the best coaches ever to coach, could get it done at USCe. I’m just a little worried about what his career would look like afterwards if it all went down like it did for them.

    • roygbell says:

In my opinion, Riley just needs 3 to 4 more years at OU before he takes a head coach job. I think he already has all the tools to be successful. What he doesn’t have is a proven track record of great success at winning championships and coaching at the championship level. He is at a place where he can build that kind of resume.

He just need to follow the example his boss followed to get the OU job. Bob toiled under Snyder and then got the DC job with Spurrier at Florida. That is what earned him the exposure that Joe C latched onto and pursued him and brought him to Norman.

Really like the Sylvie kid. Look forward to seeing him game.

  • SE Sooner says:

Seen where Muschamp has cancelled his recruit visits and has reached out to Clemsons OC to take with him to South Carolina . Some believe he will be named today as HC . Fingers crossed
I think it’s actually a good hire for them , their defense is horrible and Muschamp has said if given another gig , he will run a spread offense .

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Sooners in for a really nice run the next few years. Would imagine LR wants to stick around awhile and be a part of winning championships.

    • RBear says:

Don’t forget, he has first hand knowledge of what we haven’t even seen yet- we have a ton of talent that’s yet to see the field via redshirt, injury etc. The pantry is stocked.

  • Brian says:

Is anyone going to comment on the Levi Draper news? I noticed he has no mention of Okie State on his profile anymore…He might be decommitting/flipping soon 🙂
