Open Post | Wednesday, Nov. 18th

Velus Jones: 2016 WR and USC commit, Velus Jones (Saraland, Alabama) is scheduled to take an official visit to Oklahoma this weekend. I spoke to a source close to Jones and his coach in Alabama and was told that, “since the coaching change USC has not been in contact with him much…he is definitely looking around.”

I’m told Jones in fact visited Mississippi State last weekend and is scheduled to visit Tennessee after his trip to OU. I’m also told that right now it doesn’t look as though Alabama will offer given the number of wide receiver spots they have and scholarship offers out but a friend I trust speaks very highly Jones and his ability.

The fact that Jones is committed to a school outside of SEC territory tells us that he’s certainly open to playing away from home. Got to believe that playing in an offense like Oklahoma’s will be appealing to Jones. I’d keep my eye on Jones. – (Super K)

Sci Martin: With the defensive line playing so well last week, I figured it was a good time to reach out to DE Sci Martin (New Orleans, LA). As you’ll recall, Martin and his teammate, defensive tackle, Stephon Taylor visiting Oklahoma last month and really loved the trip.

Martin tells me that Oklahoma is recruiting him very hard right now. He said he’s “feelin OU” and coach Reynolds but hasn’t yet set a commitment date. Martin tells me he still has a couple official visits he’d like to take, to TCU and LSU. You’ll recall Martin holds an LSU offer and was expected to commit on the spot once he was offered but chose not to. Doesn’t sound like anything is going to happen right away but with the Sooners starting to show up at every position group, recruits are noticing. – (Super K)

Grayson Reed: 2017 offensive tackle, Grayson Reed (Houston, TX) will make his way to Norman for an unofficial visit this weekend. I spoke to Grayson’s father, Terrence and he tells me that while OU has not yet offered, they are expecting an offer shortly. Reed already holds offers from Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Missouri and others. Reeds father tells me that Grayson and coach Bedenbaugh communicate “almost everyday”. – (Super K)

Trayvon Mullen: 2016 CB Trayvon Mullen (Coconut Creek, FL) tweeted out the following yesterday:

The interest in Oklahoma shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. When I’ve spoken to Mullen in the past he has talked about his desire to visit OU. Mullen plays for the Florida Fire 7 on 7 team and all the schools he’s visiting (TCU, Clemson, FSU and LSU) have ties to the coaches of the Florida Fire. Having said that, if the Sooners can win that last visit and the winning on the field continues, Kerry Cooks and this staff can’t be counted out. Oh and by the way, Mullen is nasty… – (Super K)

I really think Chris Daniels may commit. My friend will reach out to Mique today , If he doesn’t visit this weekend it doesn’t mean he’s not interested in OU. I truly believe its a OU vs UCLA battle and I like our chances.

believe Mique cancelled this weekend because of HS playoff game. may reschedule for later or maybe not………….

Velus Jones seems like a guy that could come in and do some special teams for a year before jumping in to an elevated role at WR. I like it. Let’s get this guy.

  • soonermusic says:

Very interesting comments about Ty Darlington by Bedenbaugh last week. Said that Ty (and Ikard) is the kind of player a coach is lucky to have once in his career. Further, went on to show a successful run by Perine which he said was specifically due to Darlington’s identification and changing the blocking call at the line of scrimmage. Bedenbaugh’s comment was that there were very few players in the entire country that would have been able to make that play. fwiw

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

Great complement by coach B. But some Darlington naysayers will still not be happy he is starting center. I’m happy with his play as an armchair fan.

    • roygbell says:

I am positive the Bedendaugh statements were due to the intelligence of both Ikard and Darlington. The Center is right next to the QB in intelligence and quick thinking being critical ingredients in the make up of those who play those positions well.

Ty isn’t a huge physical presence as he is prone to getting pushed around some in almost every game. But, he is the glue that keeps the OL together and getting better. The kid is a good leader.

      • soonermusic says:

“due to the intelligence” Clearly that was a big part of it, as it is a big part of his play and inspirational ability both on and off the field. As others have pointed out, the appearance of getting pushed around is not always what it seems. Additionally, Coach B’s comments are pointing out other ways in which Darlington’s play is making the offense succeed, even though it might be invisible to the observing fan. To me it was the extreme level of the compliment(s) that was the most telling.

  • Ash Jones says:

Who believes Boykin & Doctson won’t play this weekend? I expect TCU to be their healthiest they can be on Saturday.

  • CW says:

What is Ty Darlington doing with his head directly prior to the snap?

    • Kyle says:

Ikard made a comment on Twitter about this a couple of games ago. I believe that it was to help the rest of the line know when the snap was coming due to the loud noise of being on the road.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Signaling a snap is imminent. Looks badass, but I wonder if it gives away too much

      • Zack says:

I think it hurt earlier in the season but the OL is playing well right now and I have to give credit to Ty for their improvement. I’ve been very critical of darlington but ever since they started samia, the whole line has played well for the most part.

You would think it would hurt the offense but It wasn’t a disadvantage at Baylor and if bedlam is for all the marbles hopefully osu can’t figure the timing out either.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

And I noticed Ty was firing out quickly against Baylor. He was on a mission.

        • Indy_sooner says:

Yea, against elite LBs especially it doesn’t help (Malik Jefferson and those Tenn dudes). They don’t need extra help timing our snap count

  • Boom says:

Trayvon Mullen – Hope we can get that visit. Great length to be a CB but I see him more as a NB. He would fit the coverage mold required in a NB & he has great size. I like him a lot.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

I wish Mayfield, Tapper, Striker, or whomever would have the mind, when giving a post-game interview in an environment like last week’s game, would turn to the camera and be like, “If you want to play for a championship, come to OU.” I mean, just look at the following Dabo’s vapid “BYOG” speech received.

Recite the Preamble. Quote from Home Alone (“Merry Christmas, you filthy animal.”). Say something to channel that moxie right through the camera and into those impressionable teenage brains.

  • EasTex says:

Thanks for the info, Super K.
Big game Saturday and lots of festivities. Would love to hear some of the young men visiting this weekend commit.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Thank you K! As always much appreciated.

  • Scott says:

I love Zack Sanchez comments on OU defense , OU plays the best offense’s in the country and we get no credit for it. Look at what OU did to Cory Coleman , that kid couldn’t do a thing against OU. Again no respect from the media for how great OU’s defense is.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Well, it doesn’t fit the narrative that espn espouses. Not sure how many more times the Big 12 needs to thump a “top” OOC defense for people to catch on – but kicking some sec and Big 10 butt in the post season will help.

      • Scott says:

I want Bama in the title game and Clemson in the playoff game.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

I’d rather knock Bama out first and send ’em home early. Let their nutty fans stew on that for another year.

        • SoonerinLondon says:

Clemson is potential redemption and Bama is, as history has proven, OU’s b!tch.

          • Spitting Bull says:

That would knock out that excuse they had in the Sugar Bowl. You can’t say, we just weren’t ready, for the playoffs. Oh but wait, they did say that last year. That they were looking ahead to the championship game. Why bother…..Just beat whomever they put in front of us. I believe we will.

        • soonermusic says:

wouldn’t hurt my feelings if Bama didn’t make the playoff.

        • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I want OU to beat Bama in the title game and beat Clemson in the playoff game.

          • soonerthunder says:

Not me. I don’t want Bama even making final 4, but I don’t want them crowing that they played for NC. I want them to get beat again, that’s what I want!

        • Spitting Bull says:

Dream scenario. Heck if we could some home throw in Florida and USC we could pay back all.

    • Spitting Bull says:

Herbie is high on OU’s D. Didn’t you guys hear him refuting the rumor that their is no Defense in the Big 12. I hear you though. We don’t get enough credit but we still have a chance to earn it. More importantly though. We just need to keep winning.

  • Sarosh Nizami says:

Did some basic # crunching on the latest CFP rankings – took the difference in spot between the CFP and AP & Coaches polls (don’t necessarily like those polls, but they’re also human ones, so trying to compare apples to apples) and averaged them out for each team and conference.

    * The Pac12 is getting the biggest pass, coming in at an avg of 1.875 spots better in the CFP than in the AP/Coaches (Stanford and Utah are 4 & 5 spots higher respectively in the CFP)

    * The SEC, not surprisingly, is second with an avg of 1.5 spots higher in the CFP. Surprisingly, the AAC also averages 1.5 spots higher (Houston is under ranked, but both Navy & Memphis are over ranked when comparing the polls, which explains this #)

    * The Big10 is 0.42 spots worse, and the ACC is 1 spot worse in the CFP as compared to the others.

    * The Big12, surprise surprise, is averaged 2.25 spots worse in the CFP (OU & Baylor are the same across the polls, OSU is a few spots below, but TCU is really bringing this # down, as there’s a 7 spot difference in their CFP of #18 compared to their AP/Coaches of #11)

Not to count my chickens before they hatch, because we of course still have to take care of TCU at home and then go on the road for a tough Bedlam battle vs an undefeated or 1 loss OSU team, but OU fans haven’t had a chance to even think about or discuss these type of scenarios so late into November in a while, so I’m going to go ahead and take advantage of the opportunity haha – Initially I wasn’t worried about ND in the case we both win out, because their best win vs. Temple looks a lot worse now after the Owls got beat down by a mediocre USF team, their potential best win vs. Stanford also took a big hit after this weekend, and they won’t have a conference title (which the committee reportedly likes). Yes we’ll both have the common opponent in Texas, where the Irish have the clear advantage, but the eye test + looking hot lately a la the Buckeyes last year will clearly be in our favor. But these latest CFP rankings, not necessarily their ranking of OU, but how they view the Big12, particularly TCU, has me a little worried. If it was a lesser brand Big12 team, then maybe ND doesn’t get bumped, but since OU has the tradition & power to match, wouldn’t we slide in to that #4 spot? I know this is blasphemy, but would it be better for us this weekend if the game vs TCU is close, as Long even said that Baylor didn’t drop down that much in their rankings because they went toe to toe with OU? Seems like a Catch-22 .. annihilate the team and they may drop from the rankings, but play a close game, and then you had a hard time with what they view as the #18 team in the country. Seems like it’s an unfair set up for failure. Anyways, sorry for the rant/speculation .. most important and only thing is to just get the wins however they may come and let the chips fall where they will.

    • soonerthunder says:

Personally, I want OSU to win now. I wanted (a couple of weeks ago) for TCU to win against OSU so we could be the first team to beat both TCU and BU. But now I want OSU to beat BU so we can be the first to beat OSU. Beating a #6 BU, a #11 TCu and a #5 OSU (or higher, IF they beat BU, which I don’t think they will, and IF someone above OSU loses–possible esp. w/Ohio St playing Mich. St.). That’s a pretty impressive way to end a season and play for weeks before the BU/TCU/OSU gauntlet.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

        You are correct, sir.

      • Spitting Bull says:

When we beat TCU, they will drop completely out. Even if it’s close. It’s the way the committee set it up. It appears they have propped up 2 loss Stanford to help the Irish. And LSU and Ol Miss to help Bama. Why are there 5 two loss teams ahead of TCU right now? To set up for the final. Notre Dame gets a lot of credit for losing to unbeaten Clemson yet TCU gets none for losing to unbeaten OSU. Notre Dame gets a ton of credit for beating Texas 38-3 at home yet TCU gets no credit for beating them down 50-7? The Big 12 needs to work on getting more representation with the committee. That’s all there is to it.

  • Fear The Magic says:

I find it interesting to note that if it comes down to OU or ND for the final spot the Committee seems to be putting so much weight on the one common opponent. While its true that ND beat UT and OU lost to UT how do they explain the fact that last year they jumped tOSU over TCU when the frogs were MUCH more impressive over their one common opponent ( Minnesota ) than buckeyes were ?
Just another case of using whatever stat is convenient for them to justify their case at the time.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

deleted, idiotic post, had brain hemorrhoid

    • soonerthunder says:

good point. It goes back to what I’ve said about the committee from last year’s final vote. They will do whatever they want to do and find a justification for doing so ON THE FINAL VOTE. All these other votes are nonsense, useless.

      • Super Keith says:

Exactly. I refuse to get upset over any poll released before the final one comes out. Last year showed that they’ll make whatever move they want in the last poll.

    • SoonerSpock says:

What it appears that the media does not realize is the fact that the first criteria when comparing similar team listed in the CFP Protocol is championships won. Championships won’s weight cannot be counted until the conference champion is determined the first week of December. Consequently Ohio State got that comparative boost last year while the B12 did not select a champion and therefore many not have gotten a championships won boost by the committee.

OU/OSU will get that boost in the ranking posted after the Bedlam game 11/28. The other power 5 conference champions will get their boost. Notre Dame does not get a comparative boost for winning a championship but can use the fourth critera of comparative outcomes of common opponents.

I suspect that the boost for winning a championship will at least equal the boost Notre Dame gets for the comparative outcome against Texas. The rankings following Nov. 28 will provide us a determination between the B12 and Notre Dame unless Baylor wins out then will be a week later in the final poll as the bears play the whorns Dec. 5.

The final CFP vote is the only vote that reflects championships won by all conferences. Accordingly their will always be a big change in the final rankings unless the top 4 in the CFP win their conference championship and then there may be no change unless #5 or #6 have an impressive conference championship like the Buckeyes did last year.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Well, first…gotta not lose to Texsa. That’s the bottom line.

Having said that, if we happen to win out and don’t get in I REALLY hope it moves the OU brass to get out of this Titanic of a conference. Don’t run around looking for mediocre teams to join, or add a worthless conference championship game that forces two teams to play each other twice, just get the #$#%^$# out.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

Join Huskers in the B1G and have a golden road to the CCG every year.

      • thebigdroot says:

It would also help the if teams like BU would play someone tough. At least TTU played and beat an SEC team. And we know who they beat, but of course that pattern is not for the Big XII.

      • Clint Lenard says:

The reality is, if OU were in the SEC and all things equal, they’d already be in the top 4. Period. This is collusion and it needs to be stopped.

        • SoonerinLondon says:

Don’t want the SEC. Go West young man. Or, go B1G.

OU could win the Pac or B1G about as often as they have the Big XII, IMHO, which would get them into the playoffs.

I don’t see us winning the SEC that often and don’t want to be a part of the SEC recruiting trash.

If the Pac or B1G doesn’t work, merge with the Pac or ACC and create the first super conference. I think that is the way everything is going anyway…either five or six 16 team super conferences.

Get a head start on that and go to an eight team playoff with the five or six conference champs automatically in and three or two wild cards.

          • Daddy R says:

I’d vote B1G. Get back Nebraska every year, get Tejas every year still (back to ooc, like it used to be), and add the Bedlam game every year as ooc, and half of your non-conference is already handled every year.

Then, get the matchups like OU -Michigan, OU-Mich St. OU-Ohio State, Penn State, etc, etc, etc..

And yes, I’m aware you wouldnt get to play those other blue bloods every year, but you wouldn’t need to with Nebraska, Texsa, and Okie State on the schedule EVERY year, throw in even two of those other blue bloods, and this schedule is a championship schedule, EVERY year. Win that, and we’d never have issue of “getting in.”

And for those that would say, what about playing Rutgers and Maryland, or Illinois, or the other “not so big-time B1G teams,” and to that I say, Iowa State, T. Tech, W. Virginia, etc…

          • ccmosaic says:

Problem with BIG is that it would kill recruiting. Ask Nebraska. Secondly is the SEC it would Kate geographical sense and help with recruiting Texas, Georgia and Louisiana.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

Not if we keep the OU/Texsa game, like we did when we were in the Big 8 and they were in the SWC.

      • pag says:

I agree that If we win out and we stay out of the playoffs, which i don’t believe will happen(to stay out) , there should be a serious consideration to leave the Big12

      • SoonerSpock says:

Members of the Big 12 Media Grant of Rights contract prohibits OU from changing conference prior to the contract expiration in 2025. Should OU leave the conference early they would have to forfeit their media rights revenue of approximately $22-25 million annually to the Big 12 until 2025 which would amount to $220-250 million dollars if we did it effective the beginning of the 2015-16 school year.

That forfeiture could be negotiated down but I am sure we would still be looking at close to $100 million dollars or more. That is too big of a penalty to make the switch.

Beginning about 2025 all conferences grant media rights contract expire and movement between conference could be made by schools without and financial penalty. I expect conference changes on that timeline.

10 times. The playoff stuff is for ratings and they are getting some major ones with the last 2 weeks. Marketing 101. I’m more interested in how we are going to contain Boykin and keep our DB’s on WR’s. I think Patterson will run blitz us to death but not worried. Like what Riley said, we try something and if it doesn’t work, we know our defense will stop them and we get the ball back.

      • EasTex says:

Their defense is in a bad place. The only way they can stop the OU run game is to blitz, but then you are putting a marginal secondary on an island.
As long as the Sooners(coaches and players) are focused I don’t see tcu slowing down the offensive output very much.
I will wait to see if Boykin plays or not before I will have any thoughts on the OU defense. Doctson and their freshman speed burner are legitimate threats.

Doctson is now out. Too bad. I would have preferred to have them full strength. I can’t say the same about last year. Very telling. This team has given us all a lot of confidence.

Everyone is talking about what if’s with ND.

But what about Alabama what if Florida louses to FSU in two weeks then beats Alabama in the SEC championship game?

    • BleedCrimson says:

Thanks ET. Enjoyed the articles. I thought the first one is what should be what the talking heads would be talking about on ESecPN if they were not married to the money pot.

      • EasTex says:

Personally, I don’t know what they are or are not talking about. I don’t pay them no never mind.

  • KJ1123 says:

I stand corrected. Looks like Doctson is out for the rest of the season.

  • Bob Edwards says:

As one of the local radio guys here in Alabama pointed out, if you are comparing OU and ND for the fourth spot, ND doesn’t have a championship game either.

    • Tex'ish says:

      True that…

    • Spitting Bull says:

They will keep throwing that texas loss in comparison to the ND win. But I don’t think they are taking in to account it was a rivalry game in a neutral stadium. With one teams coach playing for his coaching life and the team itself with it’s back against the wall. As compared to a redshirt freshman qb playing in his first game, the first game of the year, in a hostile environment. Big difference to me. But I’m a Sooner lover.

  • KJ1123 says:

With all these reports on Strong being fired or leaving for Miami I was wondering. If he is gone next year, what are the chances Texas goes after Lincoln? That’s a big program that has alot of talent. I wonder if Lincoln would turn it down….I would think it would be hard.

    • EasTex says:

As arrogant as Texsa is they would never go for anyone other than a big name, experienced HC.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Texas has never won a national championship unless their coach had played or coached at OU. Their last NC was won by a former OU OC.

    • Brien Brown says:

I don’t think they would give a guy like Riley a shot, as I have read below and I agree Texas is too proud and arrogant to not go after someone that is “proven” or a “big name” Les Miles, Mike Gundy (yes Gundy), Chip Kelly (could make more in Texas then he probably does in Philly), Peterson, but, what I am thinking cause they are that cocky, is why not be the first school to give Brent Venables a HC spot! Mean this goes against me saying an established coach but, it’s not a forgone thought, also I would expect them the new head coach to maybe offer the OC position to Riley saying we can pay you more which I am sure they can but, not so sure Riley won’t be getting a raise at OU this year anyway, this is all considering we play as well the next 4 games 😉

    • RBear says:

      zero-

I think the regents would demand a guy with a proven track record as a head coach, gambling on a guy with no HC experience is prob a limb they’re not willing to walk out on. IMO

    • Rick says:

At one time Will Muschamp was the “coach in waiting”. I wonder if they would go back after him.

    • Bob Edwards says:

They thought they could hire Saban away from Alabama. I doubt they go after any coordinator. They have plenty of money to throw around so they will go after someone big.

    • RBear says:

Look for the Houston HC to get some looks- former tOSU OC and now 1st year HC at Houston who just happens to be undefeated and ranked.

      • Bob Edwards says:

This is going to be an interesting year for the coaching carousel. Talk of 25-30 D-1 openings, some at some good schools. You have already seen some successful coaches step down, Spurrier, Beamer, and Pinkel. Texas is likely to have lots of competition for the good coaches.
Given the cluster they have been recently they may have a problem getting the kind of coach they want. I don’t see them WANTING a coordinator or a HC from some place like Houston. They just tried that in Strong and it hasn’t worked out well so far. I think they try to throw a ton of money at someone like Saban or Meyer. I doubt they come and Texsa probable ends up fooling around until the ones like the Houston HC are off the board.

Les Miles might be available. He would fit in perfect in that circus.

    • soonerthunder says:

Well, first of all, they won’t fire Strong this year. Secondly, they won’t go after Lincoln. They will try harder than ever to get Sabin, and Sabin has moved around a lot and I wouldn’t be surprised if they get him. UT was VERY confident they’d get him last time, and I think this time they think they will FOR SURE. But, if they don’t, it won’t be Lincoln.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Sounds like Strong may leave them. I agree they go after Saban or someone like Meyer and try to throw a ton of money at them. They don’t seem to understand that those guys already have jobs at big time programs. Why go to Texas to start over given all the problems they have had in their athletic department. When you are already make five mil a year you don’t need more money. You only take the job with more money out of ego. Someone with that big an ego will have problems at UT.

        • soonerthunder says:

I doubt, myself, Strong leaves voluntarily in spite of rumors. But, you are right, UT is very arrogant. Even my friends within the UT football program admit they are. I have a theory, and that theory is they will continue to have a hard time winning there b/c the whole campus and all the alumni are infected with this “entitlement” virus. Players come on campus and they pick up that virus very quickly, and when they play us, and other teams, they expect other teams to show them that same deference and are shocked that they can’t just walk on the field and win. I get this from numerous, long conversions and staying the home of UT players’ families. One thing I tried to warn everyone about is watch out for UT. They (alumni) are putting TREMENDOUS pressure on the coaches/players to beat one team–OU. They work all year to win that game if they don’t win any other.

I would love to see Saban at Texas and have a chance to beat him every year. They would probably turn on a dime but what we are building is pretty solid. Future mega matches but I don’t think it will happen.

Didn’t Strong hold a presser today and say he wasn’t leaving texsa? Translated…..He gone.

Baylor WR Corey Coleman plans to lead rebound efforts after OU loss

    By Jimmy Burch
    [email protected]

Baylor receiver Corey Coleman leads the NCAA in touchdown catches (20) and receiving yards per game (136.6). He is one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s top receiver.

But he posted season lows for catches (three), yards (51) and touchdowns (zero) in last week’s 44-34 loss to Oklahoma, a performance Coleman termed “frustrating.” He credited the Sooners with running an effective, creative coverage scheme that limited his touches and has sent Baylor coaches back to the drawing board this week to create counter-measures in case Oklahoma State adopts a similar scheme in Saturday’s showdown in Stillwater, Okla. (6:30 p.m., KDFW, Ch. 4).

Oklahoma State (10-0, 7-0 Big 12), Baylor (8-1, 5-1), Oklahoma (9-1, 6-1) and TCU (9-1, 6-1) remain in a tight race for the league title. Coleman said he plans to be an emotional leader this week to help the Bears win a game that would allow them to regain control of their destiny in efforts to share or win a third consecutive Big 12 title.

“I’m ready to roll, make sure everybody is confident. Ready to play Oklahoma State and get this win,” Coleman said. “We’ve got to game plan on the field so teams can’t bracket me and do some of the stuff Oklahoma did.”

Against the Sooners, Coleman primarily lined up on the left side of the field. Baylor coaches did not spot him in multiple places, as in prior games, and the move “didn’t work the way we wanted it to,” Coleman said.

Asked about OU’s defensive efforts, Coleman said: “They game-planned well for me with coverages. Some times, I was getting triple-teamed. They had the linebacker running out to the flat, a safety at 6 or 7 yards [off the ball] and then another safety over the top. They did a great job game-planning. Stuff didn’t go the way we wanted to.”

Coleman said the Sooners’ defensive efforts also took a toll on freshman quarterback Jarrett Stidham.

“He’s never been on a stage like that game, like Oklahoma,” Coleman said. “It’s hard for a young guy. You try to uplift him and stuff, but he got hit a couple of times early and … I guess he felt like he had to run out of the pocket some. You have to make sure when you’re in games like that, you have to relax and take it one play at a time.”

Thanks for sharing. I have more respect for the Coleman kid for giving OUr defense and coaches the props they deserve.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’ve seen where ESPN reported Doctson was out for the year.

    • soonerthunder says:

really? When? Tonight? This really limits Boykin. He only had like one catch last week I believe which is incredible, b/c he was on pace to have something like 1,900 yds I think.

  • bjwalker82 says:

TCU finally surpassed OU 2009 in terms of injuries. Wow. Feel awful for them.

    • soonerthunder says:

like us last year, and the year before. It happens. don’t feel sorry for them b/c they rubbed it in our faces last year a/f beating us

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Baylor had 666 ypg? I knew Art had to sell his soul to turn that program around

      • soonerthunder says:

Because he played his 1st string QB into the 4th Q against teams that can only beat ACU, Bacone, etc.

    • Bob Edwards says:

I have always preferred this kind of metric for evaluating offenses and defenses. Play a bad team and you can see that all you did was hold a bad team to their average. That’s not as big a deal as holding a top ten team to the same number.

    • soonerthunder says:

Those 416 yds BU got on OU are deceiving. About 50 of them came at the end of the first half when they knew they weren’t going to score and so did OU. They threw under coverage passes we let them complete and knew they didn’t have time to score. Real yards against OU were probably closer to 375. That’s amazing, considering. Thanks for the chart!

    • Brien Brown says:

Who is this Mique Juarez I have not heard his name or heard anything about him until you posted this

      • RBear says:

Cali stud- maybe the best LB recruit in the nation. Could be that Kelly is helping recruit him.

        • Brien Brown says:

Ok ok he does ring a bell now and thought we was considered a long shot for him! Thought we where after Joyner or Jackson more so than him. But this is a nice bit of information to know thanks for sharing!

          • Zack says:

Dontavious jackson left us out of his last top whateve.

          • Brien Brown says:

Welll that’s fine he can go play for another school and watch us winn championships with Juarez, Kelly, Jefferson, Youngquest, and Terry

          • Brien Brown says:

Terry is a kid we can use as a DE, think him and Bledsoe would be a great DE tandem. Southall and Daniels on the inside, with the DB’s we have already on campus and in this class, along with DeBerry, and Gallimore and Overton, the D could be super scary. A kid like Oliver though a long long shot would be icing on the cake. Cleveland on O would be the same!

          • RBear says:

So glad Q qualified and is already contributing. Looking forward to his play in the future.

          • Brien Brown says:

I live about 10mins away from Jenks and been to watch them play a few times that kid was a stud in HS and stood out on a team full of stand outs, Union and Jenks may be the best HS game in the country, as far as quality players and coaching goes on the HS level. SO many good kids and damn good football.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I wonder how many other HS games are played in a D-1 stadium to support the crowd interest? There have been MANY studs go through that Jenks (and Union) program, always fun to watch.

          • soonerthunder says:

I live in OKC. I took my two boys to a Jenks-Union game back in the 90s. In Skelly stadium, cold, raining, on TV, sold out (the firemen cut off the line right after us). Sat next to a coach from Arkansas who had played Union and got thumped. He said he heard Jenks was even better and he had to see that to believe it. He said he couldn’t believe a team could be better than Union. Well, Jenks won.

          • Sooner Ray says:

It’s crazy. When they say buy your tickets in advance you say “this is a HS game right?”.

  • SamSooner says:

I hope Charleston Southern latches on to Bama on Saturday like a Georgia tick.

    A man can dream, right?

As for OU, beat TCU this week. At the very least it puts you closer to a Big XII championship. I’ll take that too.

    • Recondo says:

That would be my early Christmas present. I just want to hear the committee spin moving Bama to #1 after beating Eastern Latvia Welding College this weekend.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

I think Patterson is playing head games with the OU players. He’s like, “we’re down and shorthanded, but we’ll come out and do our best.” I think he wants OU thinking this game will be an easy one. TCU will come to play, and OU better do the same.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      Just win

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Just like the Texsa week. TCU has no chance. OU is rolling. Friday they will announce the Horn Frog mascot has a terminal case of the warts.

It is another setup and we need to be smart enough to recognize it this time.

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

Yeah, if the mascot can’t make the trip, we know things are going to be dicey.

      • soonerthunder says:

Our O is going to have to score points to win, just like with UT. I think our D will be pretty good, but they will score some, maybe up to 40. We have to score 45 or over 50 to win if TCU has a good day on offense. Our O can’t do like they did with UT. We need to always score over 40, every game.

        • Recondo says:

I think we win if we put 30 on the board. Maybe less.

          • soonerthunder says:

I’ll be disappointed if we don’t score at least 45. A little disappointed if we don’t score over 50.

          • Recondo says:

Oh, I agree with that. I’m just saying I don’t see TCU scoring more than 28. I have a hard team seeing them get to 20. I expect a win in the neighborhood of 52-21.

          • soonerthunder says:

yeah, I knew you weren’t saying we’d score only 30 and win. I think your score guess is a good one, too. If Boykin plays I’ll say 52-21 to 28. And if he doesn’t play, I think they score under 21 pts.

    • Brien Brown says:

Where I think you are right it is a head game but, the only game I think he is playing is with himself. By all accounts that I have read alone on here is that the players are being worked hard at practice and like it and are staying very focused. I think Mayfield is doing the same and is just playing a game at a time as they say and taking it one game at a time. OU will be ready and focused I believe. TCU will be ready they always are, so I think Stoops and staff know that and I bet they have watched last years game a few times to refresh the memory of being “unfoucsed”

      • JB says:

So what you’re saying is, you think Gary Patterson plays with himself? (Sorry…sophomoric humor, but I couldn’t resist.)

      • soonerthunder says:

We started (IMO) a five game countdown to a NC w/BU. One down, four more to go (in a row) to another NC. I think it’s possible.

        • JB says:

I like the way you think.

        • SamSooner says:

I think one of the players said their playoff started with Baylor.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Six if you count the nasty showdown with that so called committee.

          • Gary Robbins says:

Several things I don’t like about that ad-hoc committee we reference. They can serve up to 3 years then they start to rotate off, so hang on. Of course ESPN signing a 5.6 billion dollar -12 year agreement with the CFB committee is another point. I think we know who really is calling the shots.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Money makes the world go round, and there’s been over a year now of bidding time.

          • Gary Robbins says:

Yep. Money talks and bulls**t walks. Are you going to Lawton and watch C’ville play? Lawton is undefeated and lost like 19 of 22 players off last years state championship team.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Nope, usually watch on line, going to get some things done here at the North place and spend Saturday at the Jenks house. I’m sure you’re going to the Skiatook game right?

          • ALXMAC says:

What’s up Ray? Sorry to jump ya’lls thread but you have been watching HS games online? Do you track the game on Maxpreps or actually get to watch it live?

          • Sooner Ray says:

Live stream, not sure how many High Schools do it, but my old one does. Some students and maybe a teacher do the on air commentary.

          • ALXMAC says:

That’s awesome; do you have a link?

FULL DISCLOSURE: I am a Lawton Mac alum living in Wichita and wouldn’t mind watching the away teams broadcast. I was only able to make it to one game this year (vs. Altus) and that was one of the most exciting games I’ve seen in years.

          • Sooner Ray says:

The stream is through okpreps.com, I just looked and the C’ville/Lawton Mac game isn’t on their stream list right now but you could check on Friday. There must be some different rules/rights during the playoffs because streamed games are limited. It would be worth checking collinsvillecardinal.tv (where I go for all regular season games} on Friday evening just in case they are allowed to stream.

          • ALXMAC says:

Thank you Sooner Ray!! You’re probably right about those playoff streams being limited (and I bet that will change in the next 4-7 years when the potential $$$ lines up) but I bookmarked those links and will check on Friday. Thanks again!!

          • Gary Robbins says:

Oh yeah. Have 2 step-grand kids that play for Skiatook.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Nope, usually watch on line, going to get some things done here at the North place and spend Saturday at the Jenks house. I’m sure you’re going to the Skiatook game right?

        • SoonerinLondon says:

          Yes.

In reality, the countdown started after Texsa, as we didn’t have any margin for error after that point. Any chance at a Natty meant winning 9 in a row.

Not sure any of us expected it, but the team darn sure did.

    • soonerthunder says:

      agree completely

    • JD says:

I think our guys know that we are playing for style points and will be ready to play and besides that I don’t think they read all of this media drivel..the watch film and make preparations

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Agree. Granted, they’re banged up, but this is a team that has only lost two games in two years. We need to be focused. And I think we will be.

  • Zack says:

    Chris Daniels ou lock #justwaitonit

A thought just crossed my mind though…why haven’t we seen any recruits with the tfb boom shirts this year? Mbanasor and haughton were all of that last year.

Edit: perhaps I’ve missed it if recruits have been…

    • Brien Brown says:

Sources? Mean I feel like he will commit this weekend but just a gut feeling, what you going by?

      • Zack says:

Twitter and that its between us and Michigan 2 different worlds. I don’t know that he pulls the trigger this weekend but eventually yes.

        • Brien Brown says:

I like OUr chances with him as well, and I really think Kelly is close to saying I do as well. Bledsoe should as well mean can’t see what KU would do for him in the future or helping his chances to make the NFL!

          • Zack says:

Well at KU he will get a ton of experience that defense is always on the field.

          • Brien Brown says:

True as that may be not where I would want to spend 3 to 4 years, he could go to TU and get the same experience and play with a team that can actually score! So may as well come to OU

        • Gary Robbins says:

I don’t do twittering, is that a word? Anyway have you read any chatter about another offensive lineman? Also I seen somewhere that OU was only a 7 point favorite and the o/u was 80. Doesn’t seem right to me.

          • Zack says:

I haven’t seen the line yet for the game I think 80 is a bit high but maybe they’re expecting us to put 60 on them and for us to give up 20

I didn’t go very far back on Daniels Twitter but the last day or 2 it’s all ou and not just a retweet or a like here and there. More like 20 or so.

Offensive linemen? I will have to check I only know of Valentin that was kinda warm on ou and had connections to Trent Williams. I just don’t expect us to land more than 3 stars at OL this year. Lots of young guys but that’s not a bad thing. Alvarez was a 2 star when we first offered and I think he moved up to 3
