Had a chance to speak with a source following the news of Maurice Chandler’s decommitent. First off, it seems to be a mutual split on both sides.
Chandler told TFB he “just didn’t feel like home at OU” and went on to say he is ‘open to anybody’ moving forward. Meanwhile, Chandler’s decision clearly opens up a spot in OU’s 2016 DB class and according to my source it’s one they would like to fill with a four-year player rather than another JUCO prospect, like Chandler.
The top targets for that now vacant spot continue to be Baylen Buchanan and Brandon Burton. And the OU staff have also re-opened the lines of communication with current Texas commit, and teammate of 2017 OU commit Robert Barnes, Obi Eboh. In fact, there is even the distinct possibility that Oboh could make a visit to Norman in the coming weeks. And one source TFB spoke with remains steadfast in their confidence with regards to where the OU staff believes they stand with Buchanan.
So while this news could easily be seen as a disappointment, based on what TFB has been told the Sooners feel good about where things stand going forward. – (Brandon)

Realistically with the talent we have, a four year guy would be better for us and Chandler would more than likely be on the bench anyways. I still think Sanchez stays unless we go to the playoffs.
Agree, would much rather have a four year guy.
Can we merge these threads? 🙂
That’s a 15 yard personal foul for an illegal merger. (I always wanted to say that)
Is that the same as a wedge?
No.
You’re looking unusually phat today. 🙂
Pretty
Hot
And
Tempting
LOL.
Sure..why not, everybody is doing it!
Good job Brandon. I appreciate this positive angle you used in the story. History shows us sometimes the situations we look at as a bad deal turns itself around for something better.
Depending on how the season plays out and it ends up how we all want it to. OU may want to just hold the scholarship in there back pocket.
much rather stumble on a really good olineman……..
Sanchez isn’t even an All-B12 team DB, and he’s thinking of leaving early?
Agree he is not even the best defensive back on the roster he need’s another year.
Even funnier is he was talking like he was thinking about leaving last year but came back because the loss or something lol… I think he has good enough coverage skills but his tackling will get exposed! It already does vs big WRs and RBs.
Agree. I don’t mind that he does lead. I like Austin better. Less gambling, more tackling.
Lol, no offense to Dakota, but he’s been tackling a lot of completed passes thrown at him. If that’s your cup of tea so be it.
All you guys hating Sanchez please give specific examples of his tackling being a problem THIS year. No, not last year when he went to war with one arm most of the year. This year.
And yes he does bite on double moves occasionally, but you sure love him when he has won or flipped games jumping a route for a pick and lots of times a pick 6.
I assume when he’s ready to come back you guys will be clamoring for the tackling prowess of Austin. And I’m sure the coaches will comply since they have been so naive to miss this for so long.
Are you kidding? Watch any game.
Wait, what? I get that he’s a polarizing figure (not sure why, honestly) but facts are facts. Best CB in the Big 12 last year

He is a preseason B12 pick because he’s started for 3 yrs. He doesn’t have the kind of speed or size the NFL wants in DBs. Just making a Tony Jefferson draft move if he leaves
early.
Wrong, he is on the pre-season list because his numbers put him there for those three years. He was the best CB in the big 12 last year which contradicts your “All-big 12” comment specifically. I don’t disagree on his need for another year to fix his shortcomings.
Think it also could mean ou is comfortable with is on campus. Sounds promising for the depth at cb

The young defensive backs are starting to play good we don’t need Chandler I really like the young defensive backs we have as for Chandler don’t let your backside hit are door adios we don’t need you overrated defensive back.
That’s a bit uncalled for, wouldn’t you say? Trash-talking a 20 year old kid when it’s a mutual parting of the ways for OU and Chandler. OU wants a 4 year guy and has their sights set on several really good high school kids, and Chandler is a juco that would be better off going somewhere he can compete for a starting job right away. Both sides would benefit from looking elsewhere.
Yeah but he also from what I understand took a shot at Oklahoma by saying he didn’t feel at home at Oklahoma and that’s why he started to look around. Now as far as your second question I agree with you I think we are better of with a four year player. We are Oklahoma we shouldn’t have to recruit junior college players we are better than the Kansas and the Kansas State’s of college football.
“Not feeling at home” is not taking a shot…Mr. Babcock.
Then why didn’t he earlier tell coach cook of his intention to look around instead of dragging this out like he did that to me is a a little bit disingenuous on his part sound’s to me like he used Oklahoma for his own gain.
Well…probably because he’s like 20 yrs old and like most 20 something’s may not have the most decisive moments of clarity. Just my opinion.
I respect your opinion but I also think my opinion has some merit to it.Look in my opinion we have better options than him.
That might be the case….however the obvious need not elude you in the fact that this individual made a choice that he believes will benefit his future. No harm no foul.
I like the kid Buchanan the kid who is committed to Louisville right now hope we can flip him.
Is that not disingenuous?
you stumbled on a dictionary
I bet truth be told, it was the other way around…..that Cook told him he needed to be looking around. You won’t hear a coach say that, but it happens. If a committ can look around behind the scenes, why can’t a coach recruit over them?
maybe he and cooks did have this understanding a long time ago but it’s the rest of us who didn’t know.
Maybe or maybe not I guess we will never know.
Why do you use so many capital letters and so much punctuation? 🙂
Why? Why not?
Not speaking to your thought, but I do appreciate your use of punctuation and the like. Don’t let other’s discourage you.
I’m taking shots, but not in the same way.
Well that sucks, thought Chandler could come in and take Sanchez’s spot right away.
Disagree totally he would have been a career backup we have very good young defensive backs on our roster and have some great ones coming in next year.
Great ones? As in the one’s still committed? Is that what separates the overrated from the greats?
Mark it down Jordan Parker the kid from California will be an all-american at Oklahoma Chandler will be a backup wherever he goes.
So you picked the highest rated DB of the bunch, that’s a pretty bold prediction. Not saying you’re wrong but none of them have played a down. I will say with confidence Parrish Cobb sees the field first.
Maybe but Parker has the most upside to him of any of the defensive backs coming in mark it down he will be a first team all American at Oklahoma before his career is over.
That would be stupendous! I’m going to take the wait and see approach to your bold prediction though.
He is one of the most talented young defensive backs we have recruited in a while.Love those California kids hope we keep recruiting California.
I’m not sure which will see the field first, I would guess both would not rs and would play special teams so they might see the field on the opening kick or first punt.
And I read all Summer that Chandler was the top DB on Kerry Cooks’ list. Top of our chart…the one we wanted most of all. (This all on 247 where he got 4 stars.)
As good a game as Dakota Austin played against Tech, and as long as he’s been threatening to start at corner before Jordan Thomas grew into the job, his lack of size worries me at backup.
I think Austin is going to prove that “it’s the size of the fight in the dog” he’s played every bit as good as Sanchez (albeit against lesser competition) but he’s closer to his man usually and has tackled well for the most part. But chandler has to look at who was brought in last year as well mbansor and Stephens, then Cobb and Parker I think are going to be good players.
I have been really pleased with the play of Austin. I have no doubt that his height has been what has kept him off the field, but for the Big 12 I think coverage is more important than big hits and Austin so far has been great in coverage and a very sure tackler! What is funny is been being much smaller Austin I think has been a better tackler than Sanchez.
Sanchez and Austin are basically the same size. Both are too small. If Austin is 5’11’ he takes the Kansas Touchdown to the house.
Right but Sanchez is 5’11 and we’ve seen him go up and get a ball so I’m sure Sanchez makes that play. Nothing wrong IMO of Austin taking a chance, it was likely the receiver caught the ball even if Austin tried to play the receiver instead.
And that was set up by poor field position from the offense.
He was the top guy on the list but Marcus Green and PJ r the main reason he isn’t not the hs kids they r recruiting, plus Will is a SO and even if Zack did leave, with the pt Dakota has been getting he WI be fine for next year
I agree with you. Kinda “meh” on this news.
if it had to happen, better now than in late January……..any of the HS corners mentioned above would be fine……….
I know some people on the inside down here in lawton… hopefully by the end of the day I can shed some light on this..
There is nothing good about losing a commitment, especially one of this caliber. Sh@¢!
This really isnt that big of a deal. IMO OU will come out ahead on this one. He would not have played and the recruit who most likely takes his place in this class will be very highly rated.
Someone help me out. Who was the DB, recall him being a possible ‘package deal’ w/ Jordan Parker at one time. Seems he was on the verge of committing to OU but was told OU no longer had room for him.
Shurod Thompson, I believe, but he is a S.
Thanx! Turned around and committed to ORSt Beavs. Not happy about this loss but gotta see it as an opportunity to pick up a 4 year player as there is no urgent need at this point. Would be very happy with either Buchanan at CB or Burton, who also plays safety but wr, too.
I thought it was Lamar Jackson?
I like Chandler as a player. Watched him at Lawton very good athlete. Chandler vs Buchanan, I would take Chandler bc im not big fan of Buchanan. His Hudl film left me unimpressed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZcH9s1-TtU nothing worse in high school than playing 10 yds off and making a play on bad passing. Not impressed
That’s what I don’t understand about recruiting jucos. If you are expecting immediate help, it means past recruiting has failed in some shape or form. It’s okay for guys like Snyder, who doesn’t have much to draw from but come on, we are Oklahoma, handle things in the right way and we should always have loads of guys with 4 yrs eligibility to recruit from. I realize some guys are bust but to me that is just an opportunity to go get someone better. There’s always a tactical way to get rid of bust where you don’t have to keep them on the team for 4 yrs. Another thing, jucos are jucos for a reason, usually grades. Do coaches really want to try to keep a guy eligible that couldn’t make the grades in hs? Stop the juco stuff. Do your job with hs players.
How does it not feel like home….when you’re from Oklahoma….
That was the point I made last night on this site I find that statement troubling.
It’s always disappointing to me when someone decommits even if we could do better with someone else because I’m like “Where could you go that would be better than OU? You made a good choice now you’ve just screwed your life up!”
That being said, I don’t know about you but I’ve taken notice (and I hope the OU administration has as well) at how “coincidentally” all the guys on our radar that visit ASU suddenly either decommit from OU or are conveniently “no longer interested” in OU. Some of us have been saying it for several years but there is definitely something to it. I’ve lost count of the number now.
I notice this trend as well. Would love to know if there is something more to it. The only reason to choose ASU is if you are just trying to party. Michigan and UCLA(kinda) making the final list for a lot of top recruits i get, ASU though?? Weird
Jackie Shipp and some negative recruiting??
Yeah, that’s been the rumor since he’s been there. I think our recruiting problems vs ASU started when he arrived so it’s pretty clear there’s a direct relationship.
I doubt that it’s just shipp. One reason I wouldn’t want graham, I don’t think he values integrity the way stoops has…then again who does?
I was thinking about the quote from Chandler, “just didn’t feel like home at OU”. Since Maurice is an Oklahoma kid, I would think that negative comments coming from Shipp would have more of an impact on him than negative recruiting from someone that was never affiliated with OU. I do realize that negative recruiting is a part of recruiting in general though.
Thanks for the info as always. My thoughts on recruits as well as players – Next man up.
