OU vs. Texas – What I’ll Be Watching

Image via bigtex.com

I don’t expect anyone to really care necessarily, but if I’m honest this was considerably more difficult to put together than it has been in recent weeks. Coming in, Texas looks SO bad it feels like everything I’d point out as something to watch would just be glaringly obvious.

I mean it when I ask every week what you’ll be watching for, because I’m always interested to get the take from others. If for no other reason than to see if there’s some sort of angle regarding the game I’ve yet to consider. So I’m doubly curious this week to read what you all have to say, because I can’t help but feel like any of my points are all that original or unique.

* Early Momentum: 1-4 or not, this is still Dallas and it’s still OU. Texas is going to have some juice coming out of that illustrious tunnel. So the last thing OU wants to do in this game is give a desperate Texas team hope.

Whether it be a big play or, heaven forbid, an early lead, the Sooners need to withstand that inevitable initial wave Texas is (presumably) sure to open the game with. Do that, match it with your own, and this game could very well turn into the blowout so many of us are hoping to see. Don’t, and well the Horns may ultimately still not have enough right the sinking ship that is their season but why even bother having to find out.

I know the fear — at least on the part of some — going in is that OU comes out flat because they don’t take this Texas team seriously (despite the plethora of worthless and repetitive articles written this week reminding all of us that OU still really needs to take this Texas team seriously). And if several members of both this team and coaching staff had not experienced what they did back in 2013, then maybe I’d be a little more worried.

But I believe I saw a report this week that said Bob Stoops had already made this team watch that 2013 game multiple times as a reminder of what not to do on Saturday. And I’d be amazed if the OU players weren’t made aware of the quotes coming out of Austin this week about how a win in Dallas would ‘make everything right again’ or ‘turn the season around’ for the Longhorns.

So, yeah, there’s almost no way I see OU coming out flat for this game. Some type of mistake, potential turnover, or something like a busted coverage…those would really be my concerns with respect to giving Texas any kind of early momentum.

* LOS: In the previous two meetings between these hated rivals, it’s fair to say Texas has borderline — if not outright — dominated the line of scrimmage. OU barely managed to crack 100 yards on the ground in both contests, meanwhile UT put up 148 (2014) & 255 (2013) yards on the ground, respectively. The Sooners were fortunate to come out ahead depsite their struggles moving the ball on the ground last year, 2013 not so much.

And no one needs to be reminded of OU’s offensive line issues through four games this season. Following the loss of multiple starters, this 2015 unit has still yet to really gel. Not only have they struggled to run block, but this past week against West Virginia we saw Baker Mayfield under considerable duress in the pocket to the tune of four Mountaineer sacks and several other pressures.

Fortunately, Texas has their own struggles along the offensive line as well as, to a somewhat lesser extent, the defensive side of the ball. But the same could easily be said for the past two years, at least with respect to the o-line, and yet you just read above how little that appeared to matter when it came to actually lining up and playing football.

* Discipline: This is the pessimist in me — which is SO out of character, I know — but it would be just like Jerrod Heard to come into this game and have the performance of his life. I mean we just saw exactly that from Tyrone Swoopes in this game last year, so I feel like my paranoia isn’t completely irrational.

That said, it sure seems like despite his talent and considerable athleticism that Heard’s limitations play right into a Mike Stoops defense. If you can keep Heard in the pocket and make him one dimensional, barring some kind of fluke passing performance odds are it’s unlikely he’s going to beat you on a consistent basis with his arm. Especially with this Texas team lacking any true explosive play-makers at the skill positions (assuming, of course, that Daje Johnson does not play, which as of Wednesday was expected to be the case).

Therefore, one would presume the focus on OU’s part would be playing to their strengths in getting both Eric Striker and Devante Bond on the field at the same time, which has proved to be their most effective defensive alignment. There is, however, the question of Bond’s availability after leaving last week’s WVU game with a sprained ankle.

If Bond can’t go, the Sooners would turn to Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and/or P.L. Lindley which leads me back to my initial ‘bullet point’ above. Because if we’re operating under the assumption M.Stoops’ plan will be to contain Heard in the pocket, then discipline on the zone read/QB option stuff new Texas play-caller Jay Norvell is sure to run will be critical. You need look no further than Okoronkwo’s bust last week on a QB read play which led to a Skyler Howard 50-yard touchdown run. And while Howard certainly isn’t running around in cement shoes back there, his athleticism doesn’t even begin to compare with that of Heard.

* Wrinkles: I mentioned this last week for WVU and then came away feeling like we didn’t really see any. But I’m going with it again here because there is virtually no scenario I can envision that doesn’t involve Norvell coming into the Cotton Bowl and pulling out multiple things this OU staff has yet to see on film.

It’s funny because we, as fans, have heard for years how one or both of these programs annually “holds things back” just for this game. And while in previous years it may or may not have proved to be true at least as many times as it proved to be little more than bluster, at this point what to Norvell and Texas really have to lose?

* Special Teams: What’s the cliche? Special teams need to be special?

I guess this is somewhat in that same vein, but if only because my perception is since Stoops arrived (and I’m sure even well before that) so many of these games seem to have involved, at times even swung on, a big play (or two) on special teams.

Maybe this is the 2015 game Alex Ross finally breaks a big return (much like he did last year). Or maybe the impossible happens and Sterling Shepard returns a punt for a touchdown. Or maybe (hopefully not) something positive happens for Texas after a cavalcade — I guess in reality it’s only two but it just feels like more, plus it’s Texas so there is never any harm in piling on — of special teams errors that have befallen the Horns thus far.

Or maybe nothing important or exciting happens on special teams in this game and those unfortunate few of you who actually just read this never get back that 30 or so seconds of your lives. After all as some are always happy to remind me in the comments, what the hell do I know anyway. 🙂

What will you be watching for Saturday afternoon?

Texsa has two true freshmen starters in the OL, LT and RG.

  • thebigdroot says:

Does Mike keep bringing the pressure? Does the pass coverage continue to look improved?

  • sooner4ever says:

Last year OU had a better everything and won only on the scoreboard. It’s the first time I’ve ever left the Cotton Bowl feeling as though we deserved not to win. It was ugly, and it would be nice if team played like it did last week, with fire in their bellies and desire to make a statement.

  • Jofield says:

I want to see improvement on the O-Line and in the secondary. And should Texsa come out hot I want to see us respond to adversity. We have responded well so far hairy situations (Akron 1st quarter, Tenn most of game, TU end of 1st half, WV 3rd quarter). Should the need arise I want to continue to see OUr bounce back mentality.

  • SCKSChief says:

This is a game that makes me nervous. Feels a LOT like 2013. This game should be over at halftime. I really hope the OU OL can put some semblance of a game together and allow Perine and Mixon to help control the game. Those two (Perine and Mixon) spend way too much time blocking for themselves these days.

    • Super Keith says:

It does feel a lot like 2013. The biggest difference so far is what the players/coaches are saying. I distinctly remember a few players saying things like “It’ll be tough” the week of the game in 2013, but they didn’t really seem to have conviction. This year, they’re saying the right things (and it comes across as they actually believe what they are saying…and they should). That doesn’t mean everything is great, and we’ve already won, but I fully expect the team to show up ready to face a desperate Texas squad that can be dangerous.

  • Jesse says:

I want to see a complete game. Some might argue it was pretty complete against wvu but I disagree. I wanna see all 4 quarters of domination. Also will be watching the run game, maybe this is the week we break through a little (or a lot either way)

    • SCKSChief says:

Agreed. OU did NOT dominate the game last week. The WVU run D and pass rush were way too active for anyone to consider it a complete game. Also, there were multiple big defensive busts. Those need to be ironed out as well. I would really like to see a consistent pass rush out of anyone not named Striker.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I’m not worried about Texas. The game a couple of years ago, I was worried all week, but not this time. The 2013 Sooners and the 2015 Sooners are very, very different. I think the players have a good attitude going into this game, and similar to what you said Esco, they haven’t forgotten the 2013 game. OU is going to kick some whorn ass.

  • Jofield says:

Honestly, i DON’T think this feels like 2013. We are coming off of two terrible performances against the shorthorns and I seriously doubt we come out overconfident simply for that reason.

  • mizzOUstu702 says:

Not a prediction, as much as a reiteration of what everyone has been saying anyway. But I haven’t had as much faith in a kicker as I do with Austin Siebert, probably since Garrett Hartley (and maybe even more, tbh). Dude is a rock back there place kicking, and I can only remember one bad punt (against Tennessee). You talk about special teams being special…this kid does it all.

  • Jesse says:

Honestly I’ll be disappointed if this is anything less than a blowout.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Rivalry or not, the morale of that Texas team is at an all-time low. Even Bevo has given up on them, and whatever hope they can muster for the game will be immediately crushed by Mayfield, Striker, Thomas, and Shepard.

  • Malicong says:

The two things I will be watching are two things you hit on – discipline and special teams.
If OU can limit the penalties, eliminate the TO’s, and maintain defensive discipline to not allow Heard to make plays with his feet, it could be a very special day for the Sooners.
On special teams, this has to be where the return game makes a difference. Since I don’t expect Texsa to score a lot, I am hoping the punt return team shines. I would be great for somone to take one all the way back, but I would be happy with just improved starting field position.

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

I will be watching Tapper and Dimon. When is he going to put it together (Dimon), I believe with Tapper being in his last Red River Game he will play light’s out witch may open something up for Dimon. JMO. We shall see.

    • Boom says:

Dimon has been solid and had a sack which caused a fumble last week. He was in a lot of tackles and QB hurries. If he can play better, great but he’s been playing good and if he wasn’t, he wouldn’t be playing.

      • EasTex says:

The new DL adjustments have worked well and Dimon is now allowed to attack. There is a reason he is starting.

        • Boom says:

Agreed. I’m not sure of the expectations from some but I think the DL has played well.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Don’t ever remember saying the D-line was not playing well!! I am just expecting a Bigger game from Dimon this week with Tapper playing lights out, Should open things up more for him. That is all.

          • Boom says:

Sorry, didn’t mean for it to come across that way. There have been several who don’t think the DL has played well this year. I’m with you, if Dimon can play better on this stage, bring it. It’s primed for our DL to have a big game due to UT’s issues along their OL.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Kudo’s to the defense on playing much, much better than last year. I just want a little more first step explosion is all. If we can get that it will be a long day for the ShortHorns!!

          • EasTex says:

            As do I.

        • Recondo says:

I like the idea of Dimon attacking. I’ve mentioned on here before I feel like he is always in position but not always aggressive enough. Maybe the coaches have put him in a position to go lights out a little more.

        • Boom says:

Interesting about Dimon. I read where his 40 time is marginal at best but his 3 cone drill is off the chart compared to the other DL. All I want to see is if he can make a quicker 1st step.

      • Scott says:

DJ ward has been playing well too

  • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I like that everyone at OU remembers that you can’t come out flat like in 2013, but I also hope that they are focusing on tangible things they can do better than the game in 2013. I worry that in thinking so hard about avoiding 2013, they get too much in their own heads about the game.

  • Rick says:

Good write up Jordan, you said what lots of us are or will be thinking, good job.

  • OUWade says:

even if it’s not big returns on special teams, the field position battle that Seibert won last week was enough to say that special teams are a huge part of the game. WV coaches all said that they couldn’t do what they wanted to do on offense, because they kept getting bad field position.

technically, the snap that went over the punter’s head would be another snafu by the texas “special needs” unit, so it’s really more than just two 🙂

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

but it would be just like Jerrod Heard to come into this game and have the performance of his life. I mean we just saw exactly that from Tyrone Swoopes in this game last year…and from Case McCoy in 2013.

I’ll be watching to see if UT’s porous defense can hold up for 4 quarters. If this OU offense is what we currently think it is, they score no less than 35 in this one. And if the OU defense is going to help in a B12 Title run, they will not allow more than 17 points. Special teams miscues are apparently trying to be one upped each week by the Horns so I have no clue what happens there. But I have no doubt they come into this game with their whole season on the line and throw a few haymakers early. It’s up to the OU secondary to play disciplined and the front 7 to tackle Heard when he tries to scramble. It would be great if OU scored a couple early TDs to cut their heart out.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I’m encouraged that they were able to clamp down on Tennessee in the second half, even though Tennessee has a more experienced mobile QB, WRs, and a better RB rotation than Texas.

  • Zack says:

What I’m looking for is to see if this OU team is for real. A whole bunch of talk from the leaders saying they have a chip on their shoulder and they want to prove last year was a complete fluke. Well…they need to do exactly what tcu did last week. I’ve been way down on tcu but they did what a contender does last week vs Texas, they put the game away by the end of the first quarter. If OU does not come out and kill the will of this Texas team by halftime, then I don’t know that they will make it to Waco undefeated. They may not lose to Texas but they’ve got 2 tough match ups coming from tech and ksu, one of those could shock this OU team, and I’ll look to the performance right out of the gates vs Texas to see if we should be on upset alert prior to Baylor.

    • guest says:

This week OU is 3rd best in the conference. But they are rising stars. If they continue to improve each week they will be competitive for the conference championship. I’m not even going to address penalties and turnovers here. Had they played TCU and Baylor already, they would’ve had 2 losses mostly because this is a new system they are getting used to this season. But by November, they should be hitting on all cylinders. Sure they can beat TCU and Baylor but they have to play the games to see if they will. – Captain Obvious

      What Zack said…

  • Golfluvr13 says:

I love reading these Jordan, I never feel like I am wasting my time with them!

I really think whichever team keeps their QB’s uniform the cleanest will win. That being said, I really do not expect the game to be close. I feel that OU has superior talent and the superior coaching staff. One thing I always dreaded in years past was that the OU offense always seemed to try and beat the other teams by going against their strength. And in 2013 that destroyed us. We do not seem to have that problem this year. The offense is going to do what the offense does and that is score points. I believe the defense will be fine in this game. They have looked fairly good, save for 20 minutes of the Tulsa game, this season and I have no doubt they will keep improving.

  • Matt says:

I think this might be the game this team shows off some of their immense potential and hits a 66-21 blowout. 14 of their points come after the backups are in.

  • James says:

We keep talking about waiting for this Oline to gel. I’m afraid what we see is what we get for this year. I do, however, believe if they can simply cut down on the penalties that would make a noticeable difference in our offensive output……which ain’t bad as it is.

    • Angryinch says:

I don’t think the OLINE had one penalty in the WVU game which is definitely going in the right direction.

    • hushnpa says:

texsa gets to pick they’re poison :
      – blitz like WVU every play and get beat with long passes or
      – put people back in coverage and we ram it down their gullet !

      Mwahahaha

I’m interested to see if we use more of our depth this game. I think it’s important to rotate guys during this 9 game stretch to keep them fresh.

  • RBear says:

I’ll be watching a lot of ut fans leaving the stadium- good thing I’m on the third row so not that many of them will be in the way.

    BOOMER!!!

  • Bill Holder says:

What I don’t want to see: Shep playing shallow on punts and having to go back and catch the ball over his shoulder every time. I don’t want to see the field covered in Db’s and not enough Lb’s to effectively play the run. Don’t want to see the D line just trying to hold the line and not going after Heard. Don’t want to see receivers getting behind our Db’s at all. Of course no fumbles, interceptions, or sacks. Basically I want to see a sound game plan on both sides of the ball and execution. And, if need be, adjustments made in game.

  • Fear The Magic says:

I just feel a whole lot more comfortable with Lincoln Riley calling the plays rather than Heuple. I think our offense is in good hands now.
Also I think our defense is a good deal better than what Texas saw last year.

  • tfb_fortyseven says:

There are going to be plenty of ‘things’ to watch for in this game …
    1) Discipline – I believe we will continue to see penalties from the good guys, unfortunately. So, it’s a matter of which ones are imagined (by the refs) and how much the penalties affect the score. I’ll be watching for both because this one of the trinity (penalties, special teams play, turnovers) has been our bane so far this season. UT will be depending on our penalties since our turnovers have been low and our special teams play is very solid.
    2) Attack UT’s Special Teams – I’ll be looking for blocked punts and/or FGs. Their performance has been anemic so why not attack them at this weak spot? I’d love to see Bob/etc., either send the house or use creative rushes to try to block their kicks. I believe it would demoralize the horns to block one or hopefully, two. Bob may not want to risk roughing the kicker calls ….
    3) Defensive presence in UT’s offensive backfield – In the previous wins, OU’s D has had a strong presence in the UT backfield … many turnovers and just downright awesome plays have been had by OU when they get past UT’s OL when the ball is still behind the LOS. It has been a great ‘sign’ if you will of who is going to win. IF OU cannot disrupt their backfield ops then the game could turn into a real fight.
    4) Emotions in check – Hoping the good guys don’t come out too amp’d, but they channel their energies to EXECUTING their ASSIGNMENTS in such a way as to ultimately win the game.
    5) Hard, sure tackling – As far as I can tell, OU hasn’t had this problem so far this season. In previous RRS losses, OU defenders have had a hard time wrapping up the bad guys and bringing them down at the point of contact. It’s one of those signs that can tell you how the game is gonna go. A few solid, hard hits can create momentum for the team … get the boys fired up to perform and put a serious ol’ a– whoopin’ on the enemy. But I’ll be looking for solid tackling throughout the game.
    6) OU fumbles – Notice I didn’t say ‘turnovers’ …. I believe UT will be doing whatever they can to get Perine/Mixon/Mayfield/Receivers to fumble the ball, but even if they aren’t, Bob hates this kind of turnover with a passion. So, I believe if these happen it will affect team chemistry since the fumbler not-named Baker will ride the bench as a result.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I deflinitely agree with you on #5. Ive been so critical of OUs tackling over the past few years. This year our tackling looks a LOT more solid. I only hope that that continues.

  • hushnpa says:

  • Bill Duncan says:

I was there in 2013 and it was my first RRR game. The only thing I want to see is the complete opposite of that.

  • RBear says:

Question: What section does the OU band sit in for the Red River Rivalry?

  • DCinAZ says:

Interesting thing NOT noted in Jordan’s entry, which is great, is that Texas has played a beast of a schedule. Their opponents thus far are a combined 19-1. We better not sleepwalk into this game under any circumstance.

    • RBear says:

21-4 I think but still- 3 of those losses belong to Rice.

      • DCinAZ says:

Ah. Yeah that’s probably true. I was repeating a stat Bob used the other day. Probably wasn’t including Rice in there.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I wouldn’t call that a beast of a schedule. It’s not like they played 2000 Texas, Nebraska, and K-State back to back. Cal and Little Bro are marginal top 25 teams. TCU is probably pretty good, but they are replacing practically their entire defense and managed to nearly shut out Texas. Freakin’ Minnesota put up a bigger fight.

  • hushnpa says:

actually when I think about it what you said about “wrinkles” –
what are the chances that Norvel can install just a few hunh plays ?
to me that is what made me worry with WVU – we did settle down and shut it off after one score tho ..still

  • guest says:

I went to see QB Steve Davis speak once in the Spring of 1976. He compared his teams to the airline industry. At the time, two famous sales clichés in the airline industry by two different companies were; “We really move our tails for you,” and “Doing what we do best.” He said teams were increasingly bent on showboating and celebrating and displaying what he thought was an excessive amount of individual bravado. Those schools were essentially sending the message that, “We really move our tails for you.” But his teams (’73-’75) were of the mind-set to work together, take care of their assignments, and just get the job done, overwhelmingly and the right way. He said the teams he was on were merely “Doing what they do best.” …just a good memory of S. Davis (He never lost to UT)

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I’ll say it again, when a team is struggling as much as UT is with the fundamentals on offense, it is really, REALLY difficult to add a bunch of new stuff in one week for this game. Those kids needed to run thru the basics of their offense over and over and over and over again this week.

Other than maybe the normal stuff added week to week, and something surrounding the QB run game, I bet we don’t see much of anything new from UT. And if they try a bunch of new stuff, it’ll likely blow up in their faces.

  • SPRIGGS says:

Is anyone else really impressed with Jordan Thomas?? He sure impressed me against West Virginia! His speed, length and athleticism are a real asset to the defense. Especially against teams like, Tech, WV, Baylor and TCU. I’m sure he’ll just continue to improve. He can aslo Tackle well, which I’m still waiting for Sanchez to become better at.

    • Rick says:

I was also impressed with Jordan, he played very well. He seems to have a “better” attitude after the suspension, but it seems to me Sanchez’s tackling has improved quite dramatically over last year. I don’t think he was ever a great tackler, but I do think the shoulder injury he sustained last year made it worse. I do see major improvement (with room for more major improvement).

    • soonermusic says:

“Is anyone else really impressed with Jordan Thomas??” Bob Stoops…

  • Super Keith says:

    I’m looking for two things:

    1. Time of possession. Last year, Texas beat us by 15:00! That’s crazy (considering we won the game). We ran the ball 30 times (to 20 passing attempts). I think it’s safe to say the offensive game plan last year was ‘all over the place’. I fully expect a better game plan this year. However, the TOP needs to be much better.

    2. Turnovers. No stat is as telling over the years of this game more than turnover margin. We made a big jump last week, but must continue to improve there. The game could hinge on this stat.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

I think OU has given up 2 turnovers in every game. Can’t keep surviving like that.

      • Super Keith says:

Exactly. We can survive the occasional deflected interception, but the fumbles and easy picks have to be eliminated. I hope this week is the start of a no-turnover streak.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

I’m with ya, just a good clean game. No turnovers, limit the penalties and see where the game goes. I have a feeling it will be a very good result for OU.

      • sooner4ever says:

Maybe not. You should have watched during the 70s when OU led the universe in fumbles; at least according to Larry Lacewell.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

TOP is meaningless. We won 55-17 in 2011, but lost the TOP battle 37:54 to 22:06.

      • lefty67 says:

We also had 3 defensive TD’s in that one. I don’t think I’d be relying on that to happen very much.

        • Eric Hoffpauir says:

In the age of quick strike HUNH offenses, TOP really doesn’t mean much.

          • lefty67 says:

I agree, just saying that there was a very unusual reason for the TOP discrepancy in that game (one that although I’m not holding my breath to happen again, I wouldn’t exactly object either 🙂 ).

  • Herman Bubbert says:

Good takes, Jordan. The history of this rivalry is replete – replete – with this year’s scenario: OU Fan chalks up a 40 point win, Texas comes in breathing fire, and the result is something bad.
Our inability to run the ball – despite all the punditry anointing Riley coach-in-waiting, the next Maryland coach or whatever – and Texas’ recent domination of the LOS daunts me. As does a mobile Heard.
Only fools bury Texas before kickoff.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Turnovers.. We’ve committed at least 2 in every game so far.. Also, in most years, rushing yards is a big deal in this game too.. I’d like to see improvement on both sides, as far as running the ball & stopping the run… Lastly QB play overall.. We’ve been outplayed at the QB position the last 2 years in this game… We need to decisively win that position battle this year…

  • Nancy says:

I think we’ll see Swoopes in the Belldozer/Swoopesdozer role.

  • Chad says:

I am ready for this game to get going! Sooners ready to roll these shorthorns!!!!

  • Jason MIdkiff says:

LOS, Turnovers, Texas passing ability. I totally expect this to be a 4 quarter game. I don’t care their record. Worse thing was them getting beat so badly by TCU. They will have enough pride to come out and fight. Talent gap isn’t that big.

  • Robert Boone says:

whats up with Shannon? Perhaps I missed something.

  • john garner says:

I’m watching Baker. He will set the tone for the offense. As much as I admire TK as a person, Baker is the guy we need under center this Saturday. Or, least 5 yards behind him. The comeback win in Knoxville showed me a lot about Baker’s character and leadership. As long as we have him directing the offense, we will be in any game.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

Defensively: I’ll be watching the defense keep contain on Heard to negate his best asset – running. Contain, contain, contain. Pass rush is not critical due to his problems with intermediate to long range passes. He just isn’t there yet. So, again, contain, contain, contain. Second job is to stop the run. Against TCU they ran the ball 51 times so I expect a heavy dose of the run game again. Stuff the run and contain Heard and we win.
Offensively: I’ll be watching for us to exploit the middle of the field passing which we have only touched upon just a few times this season. I know we are picking on teams with the out routes near boundries, but the middle is wide open and has been for some time now. We hit Andrews early over middle for TD, but then went seemingly silent in that area of the field. Also looking to get more running touches for Mixon. And a few misdirection run plays might slow down the UT rush and aggressiveness early. Riley has called good games for the most part but he’s leaving some good yardage out there by missing some numbers advantages. Oh, and please don’t pound the rock when we have a 2-3 numbers disadvantage when opposing team stacks the line! Please? I hate that. Basic football, isn’t it? Count the numbers. Please.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

I know this is a RRSO week, but my Cubs, Jake Arrieta to be specific did something last night that had never happened in postseason baseball EVER. CG shutout 0 walks and 10+Ks

He’s making it hard for me to temper my hope for this year.

  • soonermusic says:

I’m gonna look to see if anyone other than the “big two” get carries and/or much time in the backfield this week. Boulware is still on my watch list, and has been ever since his bone head call at the most critical moment of the Baylor game. In spite of the massive complaints from the fan base, under BJW, our special teams ended the season ranked 16th and 14th in 2011 and 2012. The first two years with Boulware we’ve been at 34th and 32nd. (Phil Steele’s ratings). If he’s gonna be handling the running backs as well, I’d like to feel like he’s showing good judgement there as well. I”ll be the first one to say that special teams are handled by the coaching staff as a whole, and it’s hard to argue with Perine and Mixon getting the bulk of the work. So I remain happy with what he’s doing, but would like to see him turn it up a notch somehow.

There you go, grumble, grumble, grumble…:-)

I also will be looking for and hoping to see consistency on both sides of the ball.

EDIT: btw, as of 9/29/15 Phil has OU at number 6 for this season.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

While I certainly like OU’s chances, the one thing that makes me a tad nervous is the point that Jordan made about how Texas has dominated the LOS last two games. And OU had a more experienced and talented O line those two years. If Horns can force some sacks and TOs, it could be competitive. But I think the line will provide enough protection to allow big plays downfield, and secure a win.

  • OceanDescender says:

I’ll be watching the storyline of Texas’ rush defense being atrocious (admittedly not many statistics for the Horns aren’t atrocious) and if that means a break out game for the offensive line and running backs. If our interior blocking keeps struggling, Ridgeway could have himself a game though.

Here’s two of the top Longhorn columnists for the Austin American Statesman discussing the situation. Despondent, deer in the headlights…are just a couple of words that describe their presentation.

I don’t follow Texa$$. So was the program in this bad of shape when Strong got there? Has he gone about this the wrong way or is he still a year or two from getting things turned around?

    • EasTex says:

It was a flaming trash can when he got there and the flaming trash can got dumped into the dumpster and now it’s a dumpster fire.
Can he get it done, given time? No idea. This is OJT for him, he took over a program in pretty good shape at Louisville and made it better. Few can be both a builder and a maintainer.

  • Lewis Hendrick says:

Tackle Kent Perkins likely out for Texas this weekend per UT radio here in Austin. Striker and Bond may be facing a true freshman at tackle.

    • EasTex says:

According to their depth chart they already had freshmen at LT and RG, Perkins at RT was backed up by a Soph.

      • Lewis Hendrick says:

Either way will be a very green player.

        • EasTex says:

          They were already dismal.
I expect the DL and LBs will have a big day. Texsa will probably try screens and draws to slow them down. I don’t think it will matter.

  • KJ1123 says:

I hope this is an exciting game…up until maybe 8 mins left in the 4th where we just totally pull away.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I will be watching an arse whupping on my DVR Saturday afternoon so if you all could wait till late in the day to comment about the game……..I’m thanking you in advance. 🙂

Can we take some prior notes, and blast you with them as soon as you hit the board Saturday night?

        • Gary Robbins says:

I also will honor your request by drinking very slowly but only till halftime.

          • Sooner Ray says:

If you really want to honor me, drink two at a time because I will be getting a late start. 🙂

          • Gary Robbins says:

I can try. Although two at a time I might not make it past halftime! Don’t know if we are staying home, going to our friends man cave, or to a OU bar in Barnsdall. I’m sure you will be driving fast just drive safely.

          • Sooner Ray says:

LOL, Barnsdall has an OU bar? I thought the gas station and the hamburger joint was the only action up there.

          • Gary Robbins says:

You would not believe this place in Barnsdall. Ask Bobby Baker next time you see him. If OU is winning the lady that owns it is a blast but if OU is losing it is Katy bar the door.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Ha, sounds like my kind of place! Which one is it? Is it North of the country store or on the main East-West street.

          • Gary Robbins says:

North of the Country store on whatever street that is coming into town from Skiatook. Also the lady who owns it with her husband are big OU fans. He was also the Mayor of the town not sure if he still is.

      How does 6 pm sound?

      • Sooner Ray says:

I’ll be all over it before then, hoping to be in the house shortly after halftime. Just trying to decide whether to pick it up live and watch the first half later or back it up and take it all in at once.

        • KJ1123 says:

I vote for live, then go back during the commercial breaks and catch up.

        • Daddy R says:

I vote back it up to beginning, especially if you wont know the score… After fast forwarding thru commercials, you might catch up to the “live” by the end.

But if you”ll already know the score, then just watch it live if its close, or back it up if its a blowout.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I will know the score because I will be in my truck driving and will not be able to resist tuning into the radio broadcast. I cannot help myself.

    • Dustin says:

You got something more important going on Saturday?

      • Sooner Ray says:

  • Zack says:

Anyone else hate this falcon hand clap thing to receive the snap? Give your OL a chance to protect your qb.

  • Tulsa Terry says:

I’m looking for another major special teams blunder from UT. This would deflate the wHorns.

  • Rick Stansel says:

First, clean up the silly penalties.

Second, this offensive line needs a lot of work and frankly, IMO, we have two weak links on it. I understand experience, but when you get blown off the ball on one on one plays and combo blocks become a standoff against one DL……………

Third, not only do we need contain from the DL, Obo just gave up the farm last week, but what happened to the inside penetration we had in the first two weeks? Walker, Dimon and Wade were reeking havoc in the backfield….last couple of weeks not so much.

Forth, even though we need to bring pressure, this would be a good week to play a lot of zone. If they are missing there best WR this week, the rest of the group isn’t overly impressive. Play zone and keep you eyes facing the LOS because if Heard escapes and your playing man with your back to the play he runs forever.

Lastly, since we are struggling to run between the tackles, we have the speed to run off tackle. I’d like to see them try some of that this week.

I’ll be watching for Domination! If this team is what they are starting to look like they could be they will dominate texsa this year. This is the game where you come out swinging and by the 2nd half should have your foot firmly on their throat. If they come out complaciant that isn’t going to happen because it is the RRS after all.

  • guest says:

The Sooner offensive and defensive lines may be shocked that a team with a 1-4 record is still willing to continuously hit them in the mouth with conviction, with much more force than any of the prior teams this year.

HA HA I love these, its like you went to the McLaren dealership down the street and bought a new car.
They have be ordered a year in advance but anyway OH btw the MSRP is $700,000 for a base model. ON a side note Mr. Bean sold his for $12,000,000 yup yup and he wrecked it twice which shows you this cars selling power..
hmm so you started 8 months ago ( I know I know don’t encourage the idiot but I’m having fun) $100 an hour, umm 8 hours a day equals $4000 a week times 4 equals $16,000 a month times 8 equals $ 128,000 you’re about $572,000 short for your “new car” just saying…. What’s next a helicopter, anyone who buys a F-1 doesn’t have the time let alone the necessity to post this kind of an add.
Hey but hack on hack off

  • JrsySooner says:

What I won’t be watching, the game! Anyway by listening to the radio I will be listening for the crowd noise, this is one game OU fans need to get off their hands and make as much noise in support of OU as possible at the same time what is the reaction when UT walks out the tunnel, lack of fan support can be dejecting at times.

First play of the game will tell us the tone, we cannot just assume UT cannot stop the run so I am looking to see if our first play is a pass, I am saying yes and a long one at that to put UT on notice.

First series, if OU can march down the field and score on the first series will OU get over confident like last year or will OU pour it on.

First Quarter, OU should be up 14-0 or even 17-0 by the end of the first quarter, if so again will they become over confident or pour it on.

OU defense, can they stop a really bad team that is unorganized and lacks leadership? (caged animal) When you know you are bad, ala Akron when you know you don’t have a chance you gamble, you take risks you are out for blood and stopping OU’s drive for success this year would be a bowl victory in EVERYONES eyes not just theirs.

It would label us, it could define our entire season, this game is probably more important than BU or TCU in that losing to a 1-4 team kills all hope of success for the year but losing to say #2 BU might only have marginal impact and keep OU in a title fight.

Baker Mayfield, can he perform at the ultimate level like he did at Tenn if he does the game is over in the 1st half.

Joe Mixon Joe Mixon Joe Mixon that’s all we hear as if Samjae didn’t even exist but you have to wonder will this be the game we see what he is really all about or will Brooks be the feature back to me its going to be Samjae. Hes a bowling ball and treats running as if he was in the gym doing bench presses he just gets stronger and stronger.
Will Oklahoma continue to get Andrews involved he no doubt creates match up nightmares
Finally killer instinct, will this team come out and treat this as a business trip and be dominate.
    BOOMER SOONER

  • Scott Moore says:

I’m looking for Attila the Sooner to destroy texsa. Take no prisoners. 63-10. OUr third team defense lets them score in the fourth.
