Open Post | Thursday, Sept. 10th (UPDATE 10:23 am)

Noah Spears: Last weekend 2016 LB Noah Spears (Irving, TX) made his way to Oklahoma for the season opener against Akron. Spears holds offers from Texas Tech, Kansas, and a few others, but he has his sights set on an offer from the Sooners as well. It didn’t happen last weekend, however, but according to Spears, “the coaches said if I continue to play the way I have been an offer could come later down the road.”

The Sooners are currently in a good spot with Caleb Kelly and Marvin Terry, and we’ve been told OU would like to sign five LBs in this class (with three currently committed). So it sounds like Spears is on OU’s board, but will likely have to wait and see how things shake out with Terry and/or Kelly. – (Alex)

Deangelo Gibbs: OU’s 2016 defensive backs class is almost filled with the Sooners likely looking to take just one more CB. Therefore, Kerry Cooks has now turned his attention to the 2017 class, recently landing Sooner legacy & 2017 DB, Robert Barnes (Southlake, TX). Last month OU also hosted another star 2017 safety in Jeffrey Okudah (Grand Prairie, TX). And last night, Cooks offered highly coveted 2017 DB Deangelo Gibbs (Peachtree Ridge, GA).

https://twitter.com/GibbsDeangelo/status/641769516632936448

I caught up with Gibbs following the offer and while the Sooners certainly were not his first, evidently they have been recruiting him very hard as of late. Gibbs told me that the head man himself, Bob Stoops, has been in “constant contact” with Gibbs over “the last couple weeks.”

Gibbs actually camped at Oklahoma a couple years back and spends a good bit of time in Dallas training under noted DB coach, Clay Mack. Gibbs also shared that he will be in Knoxville on Saturday when the Sooners square off against the Vols. Gibbs went on to say he plans on making a trip out to Norman in the near future and is familiar with this part of the country as he has a cousin that plays football at the University of Tulsa. – (Brandon)

Adam Beck: Another 2017 DB to keep on eye on is safety prospect, Adam Beck (Richmond, TX). Beck is high on Oklahoma and has been in regular communication with Kerry Cooks. He started picking up offers this past summer and currently holds offers from Baylor, Texas Tech and several others. Last month Beck shared with TFB that coach Cooks told him to expect an offer soon. Then just last night Beck let me know Coach Cooks asked him to call this week, so it sounds like that offer may be imminent. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (10:23 am): Not sure at the moment what, if anything, this means with regards to OU & Devwah Whaley.

Would be interesting to see the Tennessee visitor list for this weekend…

    • Doobie74OU says:

Wadding through the Orange of the Vols Fan site was a bit depressing but it said it was a “huge recruiting weekend for them” but then went on to say that “no official visits were scheduled.” Unofficial visits from 2016 guys like Mecole Hardman and Marlon Dunlap and 2017 guys like Matt Dotson, William Pool, Justin Foster, and maybe Ty Chandler all 3 & 4* guys. Weird there is no Officials Visitors though!

edit : Sorry they don’t have a TFB – Tennessee Edition so I couldn’t get better information!

      • Randy says:

Yeah.. You would think it would be a bigger deal with official visits.. Looks like they have home games with Ark and Georgia coming but not much else.

  • Mr. Jones says:

Other than being from the same high school, any details on Gibbs’ relationship with Orlando Brown?

  • Daryl says:

I think it is easy to allow games to become bigger than they really are but this weeks game keeps growing bigger and bigger in my mind. For perception, recruiting, team confidence and belief. Someone talk me off the ledge of this make or break if you should or do you all also agree that this is huge game for the program.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Huge game for the B12. Tennessee and Minnesota might be this leagues only good wins. It also helps recruiting. Yeah it’s a big game but does not end the season with a loss

      • ouwooferman says:

        Well stated.

      • Brent says:

so Rice doesn’t do anything for you?

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Rice will be the win UT looks back on as the start of the ….

          the offseason

        • Bob Edwards says:

Not counting Rice as a win yet.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

            That’s harsh.

          • Bob Edwards says:

A team that hasn’t scored more than sixteen points in a game since the middle of last October just gave their playcalling duty to a guy who hasn’t called plays in eight years. This Texas team could very well implode against a Rice team that has been decent the last couple of years. I think Texas really may be that bad.

          • Doobie74OU says:

I think they said they have been outscored like 117 to 20 in their last three games. Yuck!

          • Boom says:

It’s floodin’ down in Texas & all the telephone lines are down. We could really have fun with this song.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

I heard someone on the radio break down Strongs first two years offense/defense at Louisville and compare them to what’s happening now at Texas. The point was that this is pretty much who he is, absent Bridgewater.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well haven’t studied him that much. I just know that replacing any coordinator after one game for anything other than misconduct is usually a sign of a team taking on water and about to sink.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

You’re probably right or at the very least he is feeling serious heat. There was really no reason for it to be handled so publicly other than him trying to appease or to convince everyone that he is very much in control and has a handle on things. It’s all very interesting in a slow motion train wreck sort of way.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Actually the sixteen point thing is a mistake on my part. Still there offense is not very good and appears to have gone south from last year.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

You been following the situation between OSU and UT over Wickline? Evidently, UT hired Joe Wickline from OSU. Wickline’s contract had an out that he could leave for the NFL or to take on OC with play calling authority without penalty. Now, Strong just said he was relieving Watson of play calling authority. Evidently, UT said Wickline would be calling plays but evidently he wasn’t. Wickline owes OSU about $500K if the contract is upheld. Wasn’t Strong all over standing behind your word about Lampkin?

    • Mr. Jones says:

I think it’s huge for all the reasons you listed. Also think this game will indicate whether to expect a potential 0/1 loss season or a 2/3 loss season.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

It’s not the end of the world if we lose, but there are a lot of really good things that could happen, or are more likely to happen, if we win. I think it’s a big game for a lot of reasons. No reason to sidestep that. But a loss doesn’t ruin the season or the program.

  • Mike Reed says:

Guess I’ll post this over here as well….

My OU vs. Tennessee game prediction in pictures….

    1. A sold out checkered Neyland Stadium. Rabid Tennessee faithful fans ready to pounce on the visiting Sooners of Oklahoma.

    2. It doesn’t take long for the Sooners to dominate and humiliate the Vols. The fans are dejected.

    3. Coach Jones, unable to find an answer for the resurgent OU Offense pleads with an official to help out by throwing a flag on OU’s next long touchdown.

    4. By haltime Neyland stadium starts to empty as the fans can’t stomach watching the beat down.

    5. Stoops and his Sooners celebrate the decisive victory in the locker room.

    • John Garner says:

Sure hope it goes according to your script but I think the Vols will be a tough nut to crack.

      • Stephen Dale says:

John : I agree…….think Tennessee will dominate the LOS and the game…..Tennessee 34-20 on a dry field and by a greater margin on a wet one.

They say the life expectancy after diagnosis is 2 yrs, and last yr in the summer a doctor gave her 3 to 13 months. this fall would be 3 yrs. It’s absolutely horrible, and I’m so sorry for Ricky Dixon and his whole family.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yes it’s horrible. My prayers are for him and his family.

2016 running back. Not making me feel like Whaley is a lock. Maybe we’re tired of waiting?

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

  • Matt says:

I asked this yesterday but didn’t get a reply, anyone else heard if Cleveland and Oliver made it to campus last weekend?

  • Scott says:

Is OU still recruiting Dontavious Jackson?

    • Zack says:

Yes. I think some believe it’s hard to get a read on Jackson and that he has his eyes set on sec-land. From what I’ve seen he likes ou so I’m not counting us out.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Boulware was tweeting earlier about running backs need to pull the trigger & claim a spot… Maybe putting some pressure on Whaley?

    • guest says:

Maybe the Ball Coaches should have editors before they tweet. “….. Not everyone can handle it! Choose the HAT!” Besides, last years RB coach never used these sort of tweet-tactics…. just sayin’

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

His tweet included a pic of d murray, ad, mixon.. So, maybe he was saying they chose the hat..

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Ball coaches are not expected to be English majors. Hell, Stoops still says, “his self.” But the message got across. Don’t sleep on it! Grab your spot. We don’t have time to waste here at OU.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

But Georgia has a RB commit also, so maybe this isn’t awful news

  • guest says:

caught this on espn this morning and was disappointed OU was the underdog: Tennessee by four points…did I read that wrong?

  • Red BeauxU says:

Do you think OU will offer stud DB Caeser Williams out of South Grand Prairie . Kid is really long and can run ?

  • Fear The Magic says:

    Brandon Stephens 3* Recruit.
Offers ( amongst others ) Alabama, Ohio St, Texas, A&M, Stanford.

    So much for the stars.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      Perine was a 3* correct?

      • Fear The Magic says:

If I remember correctly he ranged from 3* to 4* but Id have to check on that.

        • Jed says:

As I recall, mostly 3 star but he also had, I think, a serious leg injury that limited his playing time and put a question mark over his ability to make it in major college ball.

    • Doobie74OU says:

If he Commit to any of the programs you listed he will be a 4* automatically if OU then he will slide 28 spots in the ranking and remain a 3*

    • Stephen Dale says:

if OU is offering , all may not be well with the Whaley / OU relationship…..

      • SoonerMGB56 says:

Or it could be that OU’s evaluation puts him on a comparable level with Whaley, and OU is in “get your spot now” mode.

    • Rick says:

Exactly, I think the coaches of the major teams in the country are probably much better at evaluating players than 247, rivals etc.

  • guest says:

someone by the “water cooler” told me this morning that last year’s biggest concern of the Vols was their youthfulness and inexperience. This year they are experienced. And now OU has young starters. Does anyone here have insight on that stuff?

    • ouwooferman says:

The difference is OU reloads, others rebuild.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

It’s great to reload, as long as you don’t shoot yourself in the foot. Let’s hope for a disciplined, focused and clean game by the Sooners on Saturday.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

Tennessee has been recruiting very well in the past few years, and it is true that they had some really talented folks last year who were just inexperienced. They should indeed be better this year; how much so is still unknown.

Appears to me that OU is also a year better most everywhere except OL (and possibly NG). I think we still have better talent and should win if we can silence that crowd early.

      • Matt says:

well NG is kind of a whole different story this year with the way the scheme has changed. They’re a single gap scheme now so they don’t need a 330 lane clogger anymore. I think the tackles might be a real strength this year.

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

TN is still pretty young. Dooley didn’t do them any favors with his recruiting or development. They’ve got around 20 FR/SO on their two-deep, and the bulk of those are on offense.

      • boomersooner says:

I kinda get the feeling this is a tennessee fan looking for some juicy tidbits to take back to his site for bulletin board material. Hard for an OU fan to make the typo UO. Ooh, what if it’s finebaum?

    • Bob Edwards says:

I would say that it is simplistic. If you are talking OL then yeah its probably true. But even then it’s not like all the freshmen last year are seniors this year on their team and all the seniors on our team are gone and all we have are freshmen. In several cases the “new” guys are Jr’s or Sr’s that have played some. Need to break it down further and look at match ups, not just some vague general notion of experience vs youth.

      • guest says:

TY. Maybe he had more than water in his cup.

        • ccmosaic says:

It is going to be a hard game. They are talented and it is in their home. But OU is more talented over all and if we play clean with few penalties and no turnovers we will win. We need to get the momentum and keep it.

  • Jason Vos says:

Anyone know why William Johnson didn’t play last week?

  • SamSooner says:

    Dustin/Sooner Ray, what gives?

  • Matt says:

I think the Vols are overrated. They have had a ton of injuries. This game reminds me so much of FSU in ’11..a top 5 preseason ranking and early victories masked how bad that team was. The only reason that game was close was because it was on the road. I think the only reason this game might be close is because its on the road.

    • Kody K. says:

I agree. I expect a close first half but we start running away in the third quarter. I predict we win by 17.

    • MoJoOkie says:

FSU was a tough game; but probably a large portion of that is as you say, the crowd/location.

      • Matt says:

Maybe I just don’t know what I’m watching but the way they marched right down the field and scored on the first drive in that game (FSU ’11) and then struggled the rest of the way made me think it was really just that the crowd really affected the way they were able to call plays and run tempo.

        • MoJoOkie says:

Yeah, or there were adjustments made. OU did the same thing near the end of it to ice the game. The crowd was the loudest I’ve ever experienced, but the stomping on the aluminum benches helped them out with the noise.

          • Matt says:

so if Riley’s system of calling plays is simpler and quicker than Heupel’s was, this might not even be an issue

          • MoJoOkie says:

I’ll agree with that. Baker is using hand signals to call the plays, so snap count and nerves could be the only distractors.

          • J J says:

The FSU DL were jumping all night … Basically off sides almost every down. Forced a lot of miscues presnap false start etc… The FSU offense did nothing. It was close BC of that fluke 4th down TD pass that OU misplayed the duck

    • CS says:

I like your confidence. I feel good too, especially about our offense, I don’t feel the anxiety with our OLine, since this is one game, we can get away without running the ball with success.

But, our secondary is my concern. The QB scramble is always a problem, so, if we can contain that, this game should be well outta reach of Tenn by the second half.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

That was a head knocker of a game. Took a lot out of both teams.

  • Randy says:

I think it means we need 2 RBs in this class like I mentioned (and got blasted for) months ago..

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Well Georgia picked up a rb commit a few days ago so I think OU would still be in good shape.

  • guest says:

There’s so many details to consider: fumbles, off-sides, false starts, unsportsmanlike conducts, interceptions, “spearings”, illegal substitutions, delays of game, missed assignments/blown coverages, illegal blocks, holdings, failing to fair-catch a punt —- all of which are self-inflicted. If the Sooners play the cleaner game, to state what seems obvious to some, they have the talent to win.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Isn’t it an odd thing to think that it doesn’t really even matter if another team (mostly) shuts down your running game that you still have a good chance to win? I suppose that is why Stoops went back to this type of offense.
