Rapid Fire | From the Zips to the Vols

—Everything that could go wrong offensively did in that first quarter minus turnovers and injuries

—The Sooners had multiple dropped passes, and still Mayfield finished 23 of 33.  If guys catch the ball early on, he’s closer to 30 of 33 and there’s no telling how many yards and scores go on the board.

—In the 1st quarter, the O-Line, like the rest of the offense wasn’t focused on their technique.  Guys whiffed on blocks, dropped their hands in pass protection, let people slide off of blocks, and in general it seemed like they were just too amped up to focus.

—1st four drives went…False Start, punt.  Holding, Punt.  Blown up reverse, Punt.  Mixon Dropped pass in the redzone, Field goal.  Mead Dropped Pass, Punt.

—Baker Mayfield had a record night, but it could have been better.  Like everyone else on the offense, Baker was really amped up.  Three plays in particular jumped out to me early that had everyone screaming at the O Line.  Great wailing and gnashing of teeth was heard across Norman as the woes of the O line were sung, but on those three plays Baker jumped outside the pocket for no reason.  He had good solid pockets to step into, but for whatever reason rolled outside of his protection into trouble.

—As the 2nd quarter rolled around, it seemed like everyone started to calm down.  The thing that is the most encouraging as I watched the game was how much better everyone got as the game wore on.

—On the TD to Westbrook, Baker steps up into the pocket, keeps his eyes downfield and scores.  On the pass to Mixon which was a design rollout right, he steps back into his protection left, keeps his eyes downfield, delivers a strike on the run and he’s off and running.  Subsequently, the dropped passes stopped, the offensive penalties ended and OU started having success.

—To me Dru Samia is your starter this week at RT.  St. John’s struggles with his technique continued, and while Dru is a true freshman and only goes 285, he is very fundamentally sound.  He looks very smooth in protection and combo blocks like a veteran who’s been playing a few years.  Watching both St. John and Farniok when he got in there, they just struggle too much to be technically sound in getting their head across and dropping their hands.   If I’m Coach B, I’m building for the future now and letting my two freshman tackles get better with every rep.  I thought that both Dru and Orlando Brown had really good games, and watching how much better they got as the game wore on gives me optimism.

—A couple of positives that I liked is that even though OU struggled to execute in the running game early, when they needed to get yards in short yardage on 3rd and 2, as well as the 1st and goal at the 2, and on the keeper by Mayfield, they ran the ball and scored or got the 1st down.  How many times in the past have you seen a Sooner team get turned away in the redzone or in short yardage after not being able to pick up a yard or two?

—I think there’s a lot to build on going into this week, and something I really liked about the team is that even though it’s only 3-0 going into the 2nd quarter, nobody panicked, nobody got down on each other, and they just kept playing.

—The theme for me if I’m coaching this week is focusing on details, technique and execution.  Early if OU does’t jump offsides, hold, run the wrong direction, fall down in the hole, drop three passes, whiff on blocks etc, then we’re singing the praises of this team.  So for such a young team offensively (13 freshman and sophomores on the two deep) this may have been the best thing that could have happened to them.

—Coming out of camp the prevailing theme was how everyone was excited, and how many playmakers there were and on and on and on.  I think to a degree guys were really wanting to watch what happened and in doing so, weren’t focused on the details enough.  So a valuable lesson may have been learned this week.  Guys have to do their jobs and focus on the details or the offense isn’t going anywhere.

—Is there cause for concern, to a degree yes, but you’re never as bad as you think you are.  Watching this team improve quarter to quarter is and was very encouraging.  OU has a bonafide leader in Baker Mayfield, and his confidence is contagious.  Trevor Knight’s leadership has and will be a big thing that rubs off too.  The first guy to run down to congratulate Mixon on his long catch and run for a td was Samaje Perine.  So I love the selflessness and how much the guys seem to like each other.  There appears to be good team chemistry.

—OU has had some recent recruiting success. They have some pieces in place that need some time to develop. If OU can win this Saturday they’ll keep the recruiting momentum going and afford themselves time to develop in less competitive match-ups.  The defensive line for the Vols is one of the best OU is going to see in the regular season. They have to be licking their chops coming into this weekend.  While I’m optimistic by nature, OU is not nearly as good on the offensive line as they were a year ago.  The Sooners lost two NFL tackles and some good tough guards to graduation, and now have three 1st or 2nd year players in Samia, Brown and Alvarez starting.

—Can OU beat Tennessee?  Absolutely.  The beauty of the offensive system that Lincoln Riley employs is that you can mask deficiencies up front with getting the ball out quick and dictating matchups.  Tennessee will not give OU big cushions to work with, and I guarantee you’re going to see a lot of tight man coverage.  The Vols staff has to feel like if they can cover for just a little while then they can pressure Mayfield.  We’re going to find out who OU is Saturday night.  We’re going to see how good Lincoln Riley can gameplan, and how good the Sooners actually are up front.

—As always I think that turnovers, penalties and all of the bad things we saw in the 1st quarter will be the difference.  Can OU make less mistakes than Tennessee?  Can OU execute when it counts?  Can OU really go into a hostile environment of over 100,000 people who are hungry and itching for the breakthrough win they haven’t had in the last decade or more and play within themselves to pull off a W?

—We will know without a shadow of a doubt what OU is capable of.  If the Sooners go out and play really well, this could be a special team.  If they go out and lose a close one it still could be a season that brings a great deal of success if the team can stay motivated, together and continue to develop throughout the season.

If OU can survive Tennessee then the Sooners will have seven weeks to get a lot better before the gauntlet of Baylor, TCU and OSU.

How much could the rain deter OUs offense ? Will we try to hard to run the ball ?

  • Matt says:

I think TCU is going to be a big letdown this season. I think they lost too much on defense to graduation and injuries already early this year. I think West Virginia is better than previously thought but overall the big 12 looks like its Baylor, OU and everyone else. The offenses in the big 12 make every game hard to win but I don’t think the gauntlet of November is as tough as people think it will be. I think OU’s schedule is Tennessee and then just hold on and don’t screw up until Baylor.

Bakery Mayfield is uppercrust and if he gets on a roll the UT game will be a cake walk and that is no pie in the sky prediction. 😉

  • BoomerDave says:

I felt that part of our struggles early was Lincoln “forcing” the run game and not taking what the defense was giving us. I think he was determined to show fans that he would run the ball at OU, and was running into an 8 man front. Once he started passing to set up the run, the offense clicked. JMHO.

    • Sooner 76 says:

I thought he was being overly conservative and not trying to get a turnover, but I don’t agree with it. Handing the ball to Perine on 3rd and 18?

After he got more confidence in the players, he allowed them to throw downfield on longer yardage and Baker was successful. Confidence ensued and the offense was excellent.

      Just MO.

      • BoomerDave says:

Don’t disagree. But, opening play was a 15-pass completion to Baxter. Then turned to the run.

      • Boom says:

Don’t have a problem with it. From an OC perspective, you don’t want to put your 1st year QB in a tuff situation early on and have an interception. You want him to settle down and be patient with the game. To early to put that kind of pressure on a new QB.

    • soonermusic says:

I don’t think it was about showing the fans anything. There will always be a certain number of plays that appear not to work, but may be necessary to a successful offense. Sometimes they are setting up a future play, sometimes they are keeping the defense honest so that they have to respect the possibility of a certain call. Other times, of course, they just aren’t executed properly, or they are the wrong call for the defensive alignment. In the first game of the season, he’s also gonna want to see how the guys handle certain plays in certain situations.

Of all the possible reasons for calling plays the way he did, I’d be very surprised if “showing the fans” was even on the radar. JMHO as well.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Okay, agree with some of your post, and that goes for the “Unanswered Questions” post from yesterday. However, I disagree with the critical nature of individual performances, which have been measured from four quarters of a brand new season. Singling out players in a negative light this early reeks of a rush to judgement, these are young, talented kids that need to be coached, in turn they will improve. I was at the game on Saturday, sat pretty close to the early action, and those Akron defenders stacked D lineman, in fact, their best D lineman lined up right behind the noseguard and they were running some pretty crazy stunts at us. I would argue that last years O line would have struggled early, who stacks their D lineman? What I saw for the next 2 and 1/2 quarters was a team that pulled together, and played very well, including those players who have been criticized unfairly. Tennessee is the right game at the right time for our young but very talented squad, respect our players and our coaches, they deserve it.

    • Super K says:

Being critical of a player isn’t a lack of respect for them as human beings. Just as praising them isn’t a statement about the quality of their character, nature or other essential human traits. It’s just a comment on performance. JY is correct, St. John suffered from technique issues. And my comments yesterday about Dom are not signs of disrespect, they are my thoughts on how he plays a game. Mind you Dom was finally playing covered because of the front change so it helped him.

      • Mizuno44 says:

Respect was a bad choice of word, everyone seems hung up on that. Stand behind everything else. Love this site and 90% of what you guys post, so nothing personal on the other 10% just a different take sometimes.

        • Super K says:

Gotcha! I agreed with a lot of what you said. Just wanted to make it clear that nothing said was meant as a personal attack on anyone.

    • Boom says:

Facts and disrespect are two totally different topics. St John lacks the technique which is coming from someone who played OL in college. Doesn’t mean he can’t get better but he needs more work on it. Even on the pro level they are always working on technique as there is never a finished product in sports.

      • Sooner 76 says:

I thought the comments were completely objective. Nothing personal, just a fair evaluation of the player’s performance.

    • KJ1123 says:

I understand how you feel and agree with some of your post. I too was at the game, and after the first series it was obvious that upfront was not playing with sound fundamentals. Schemes are schemes if you’re athletic enough you can usually get by with getting schemed. But if you’re not fundamentally sound in technique, you won’t stand a chance against better teams. And we are going to face A LOT better teams. The observations and comments above are from someone who’s played the game at the college level and understands how the OL needs operate to be successful. So I expect JY to extra critical of the OL and especially with the tackles. That’s what I want to hear from someone who knows. The great thing about this site is we can give our opinion respectfully and discuss it and move on to the next topic. Some will agree some wont, some will poke fun and be sarcastic but it’s all good.

    • Michael Brock says:

I wish you would call Jim Traber and talk to him about your issue here. Give me a freakin break. You are a complete joke. Don’t be too mean to the FOOTBALL players and point out some things they did wrong. I’m sure Coach B would never point out things like that to his guys. I bet he tells them how amazing they all were and gave them all trophies after the game. Grow up buddy. If an 18 year old kid is too soft and cant take a little criticism, then he is going to be screwed. Life is not fair buddy.

  • tfb_fortyseven says:

Excellent analysis JY!! You just know the Vols are gonna blitz and stunt as much as they can to keep our young O-Line off balance. Mayfield’s mobility will come in very handy to offset this attack. If we have the same difficulties running this weekend as we did against Akron, then our QB will have to carry and/or win the game. On the other side of the ball, I really REALLY like our chances for pressuring the Vols’ QB and forcing turnovers while keeping their run game contained. I’m betting our QB and our defense will be the difference to come out of Knoxville with the W, but like all Sooner fans, I just want a win regardless of how it happens.

Great insight JY, I was particularly fond of the “wailing and gnashing of teeth” reference.

  • soonerinks says:

JY, love your insights into the game. 1st qtr was not pretty but we kept improving throughout the game. Baker had a case of happy feet in the first half but then settled down. O-Line is going to be the key to really be able to turn the hosses loose and they are certainly talented enough, just need some seasoning. On defense, we really showed no blitzes and that will change against Tennessee. I really, really like this team and regardless of what happens against the Vols they are starting to look like an Oklahoma team again.

  • MrBigsby says:

7 weeks to get better is being extremely optimistic! WVU, UT, and KSU will be no walk in the park. I don’t care how bad UT looked, this game is almost always a battle and even though KSU lost their QB, they still have the same old man roaming the sidelines that has given the Stoops’ boys fits.

    • Defend Colfax says:

Yeah 3-8. He really owns Bobby.

      • MrBigsby says:

I didn’t say anything about “owning”, I simply said given them fits. Which he has. Victories over the old man don’t usually come easy.

        • Matt says:

well they at least haven’t come easy the past couple years but I think we have to remember that that was under Heupel and his no-identity offense. We have a legit scheme now and should get back to being a top offense. Also, we actually have done pretty well the last two times we played in their house. K-State gives us more problems at home. Also we get WVU at home and they didn’t do too well the last time they came to Norman so that should help us there. And for Texas well that falls under the Heupel to Riley transition also. Hopefully we wont go into that game and try to exploit their strengths rather than their weaknesses like in years past.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

The Heupel bashing is getting ridiculous. We scored 30 points last year against KSU. And the year before that, we scored 41, and needed most of them to beat KSU (they scored 31).

          • Matt says:

did you see Heupel’s statline last week at Utah State?
And I’m not even saying Heupel didn’t have his games (albeit few and far between) where he looked decent but I don’t really think you can defend his philosophy of going at a defense’s strengths especially when he wasn’t playing to the offense’s strengths. Alabama was a good gameplan but the Ok State in ’11? Texas in ’13? Clemson? The list goes on and on. He called some real clunkers.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t really care what Josh’s offense did in the first game of his first season over there. Plenty of OC’s have success one place and not at another. That won’t tell me anything.

How bad was Josh at coordinating an offense in 2011 and 2012?

          • Matt says:

2011 was still mostly the Kevin Wilson offense and as soon as Broyles went down the offense vanished. 2012 the offense looked pretty poor against K-State, Notre Dame and A&M..the teams with decent defenses OU played that year. Like I said, he wasn’t the worst coordinator ever but definitely not someone who could OU where they want to be.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Kevin Wilson wasn’t calling the plays. And any changes in the offense, year to year, wasn’t solely a JH decision. Matter of fact, I don’t think it was JH’s decision at all. I think Stoops wanted to try to run the zone read stuff, and for a variety of reasons, it didn’t work. To pin that all on Josh is not very smart IMO. By the time Bob wants to change back, it would be tough to do that with JH still as the OC b/c some of his credibility is shot, even if that isn’t his own fault. So the change had to be made.

I don’t want to sit here and say JH is the best OC in the world, I just don’t think he deserves half the criticism he gets. I think he’ll end up being a good OC and/or HC for somebody else before it’s all said and done. JMO though.

          • Scott Moore says:

I’m one of the few that will agree with you on that one. JH was many times a scapegoat and deserves a do over. He’s smart, professional student of the game and has integrity. Not afraid to work hard by all accounts. I think he’ll get there. But I am happy for the change for us. We needed new blood, new life. We have it!

          • Fear The Magic says:

WVU will be anything but a walkover. That team is no joke this year.

  • EasTex says:

Good to see your nic, big guy!
I appreciate your observations and thoughts.
The vols will have better athletes in general, but I think they will be stubborn about what they do on defense and not try and be too tricksy. Other than blitzes I think the game prep for the OL will be fairly straight forward.
I took a look at the vol coaching staff biographies and with few exceptions they came with Coach Jones from Cincy. They are not going to change very much.
I liked how Orlando handled himself overall, but was a little disappointed when he became a spectator on a WR screen and the guy he should have blocked made the tackle. That is easily corrected.
I am concerned with the OT alignment, both RT and LT were lining up too far back from the LOS and was surprised they didn’t get flagged for it.

  • Sooner 76 says:

“How many times in the past have you seen a Sooner team get turned away in the redzone or in short yardage after not being able to pick up a yard or two?”

It cost us the NC against Florida, without question.

  • OceanDescender says:

Loved reading this; great work, JY!

  • Fear The Magic says:

Thanks for your analysis JY. Excellent points as usual.
I completely agree that this team came in “too amped up” and that was a good part of the problem in the first 20 minutes or so. Inexperience on the OL was the other major factor of course.
I like many others feel that if we can just get past Tennessee thats the key.
The OLine will hopefully improve sooner rather than later.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Playing in front of 105K will require composure, the ability to communicate in a din, limiting turnovers and not allowing momentum swings from bad decisions. If Sooners can keep their cool they will go Elvis on the Vols and Take Care of Business.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

    Great write up JY!

  • Matt says:

Agree with the previous posters, this is good stuff!

  • Jackson1006 says:

Great takes JY. What’s up with Darlington? He, like Ikard is a great student/ Sooners ambassador but lacks strength/ anchor/ punch like his predecessor and doesn’t seem as quick. Gets pushed into quarterback or gets beat too often.

Last year’s tackles were great but I thought the guards were lumbering and always missed on second level to get to LBs etc. I liked how we did in short yardage in the first game like you said. Just shows you how bad the O was last year when TK9 had all day to throw and we couldn’t get it done. Man would we like last year’s O line with this years skill players.

    • Matt says:

watch out talking about Darlington..people get defensive of him on here really quickly.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Are you going to say this, or something like this, every day?

        • Matt says:

what difference does it make to you?

          • Boom says:

Matt, this is only my opinion but being an instigator makes a difference to a lot of us. Seems you enjoy this roll. For the most part, everyone on here tries to get along but your last post doesn’t bode well. Other boards do well with this type of comment, not so much on TFB.

          • Matt says:

I appreciate that. I think if you read back through my comments before my previous post you’ll see that I am not an instigator. I posted one thing yesterday that might lead you to say that because someone commented incorrectly about something I said and that bothered me.

          • Boom says:

I agree and I don’t know why he went after you yesterday. Left it alone. However, to me, this is being an instigator.
“watch out talking about Darlington..people get defensive of him on here really quickly.” Nothing good comes from that statement is all I’m saying. I’m no police, just an older guy who enjoys the readers.

          • Matt says:

guess I’m still just still sore from yesterday

          • Boom says:

Ah, let it go, no reason to let that get you down. Sometimes we don’t always get our way, it’s life. Shake it off and focus on the next play.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I think Alvarez will be our center next year and a very good one at that.

      • hemisooner says:

Alvarez played worse than Darlington in this last game. Darlington is finesse blocker no way around that. And he can get over run by a bigger NG but he is the best we have right now. The two I was worried about played the best (Brown and Samia).

    • Oscar says:

“Guys whiffed on blocks, dropped their hands in pass protection, let people slide off of blocks” You would hope that all the technique coaching that Coach B. instills wouldn’t be thrown out-the-window at the first sign of fire.

who’s the best center we’ve had under Stoops? Cooper?

    • hOUligan says:

Some might say Cooper but think Vince Carter. Ikard was a warrior, though, and earned all-conference 3 years.

      • Matt says:

yeah I was trying to remember Carter’s name. I liked Ikard but I personally thought Cooper was better.

  • Birddawg says:

I completely agree with starting Dru Samia.
We got ourselves a couple of young talented bookend tackles for at least 3 years.
We also are going to learn how much of an impact Bedenbaugh has on this team.
If they perform, got to give that man lots of props. These are his guys.

  • hOUligan says:

Thank, JY. Nice piece. Would be great to have it as a regular breakdown as long as we still get ‘Trench Warfare’, too! ; ) Think just getting up to ‘game speed’ after nothing but hitting each other as well as getting their focus. Expect to see the team come out of the gate much better this week. That they are playing UTenn and not Akron has got to get their attention.

I know there’s been links to this site in the past, but it seems to be a cool film study site…what do all of you football experts think? I like his assessment of JH’s play-calling, seems to make a lot of sense (the analysis, not JH’s play-calling).

  • soonermusic says:

    Nice job, JY.

I agree that the visible improvement as the game went on was very encouraging, probably the most promising thing. The production in the red zone was also high on my list.

I also think the whole “trust the system” approach to the offense promotes calmness and confidence in the face of adversity, which is much to be desired.

I agree that many things went wrong in the first quarter although I’d stop well short of saying everything that could go wrong did…:-) (even excluding the turnovers and injuries, we’ve seen worse before) But your point, referenced by the coaches as well, that those errors were largely responsible for the offensive stall is right on.

It’s hard not to get very excited about seeing how things play out this week.

Thanx JY. Awesome analysis. Gives much reason to be optimistic. I have much more confidence going into Knoxville with Baker at the helm and LR calling the plays.

  • Mustvid says:

They better be able to run the ball because I’m sure the Vols are going to bring pressure on Mayfield in hopes of causing turnovers or knocking him out of the game. The film I saw of their game last week didn’t show a great pass rush. That QB had plenty of time to deliver throws down field. It helps that Baker has a very quick release. Running some zone read QB keepers might slow them down.

  • Jeff says:

Is the D tackle on the Vols that is suspended a starter?

  • Hollerback says:

I am more worried that after blowing out Tennessee, that our players will get a big head and drop a game.

    • Kevin Graham says:

To who? I hope you don’t think Tulsa. Get the bye week before WVU comes to Norman…. Sooo

  • Super Keith says:

Couldn’t agree more with your assessment JY!

I noticed all of the things you mentioned, plus one other. On two runs specifically (that were either no gain, or very short gains) our line was one missed assignment away from breaking a big gain. I can’t remember which player it was (it was two separate guys on the two plays) that just missed their assignment. Both instances, we had the run blocked perfectly elsewhere. Just goes to show you why it’s so important in the running game for every man to do their job.

I was surprised to see St. John struggle the way he did, I thought he’d be one of our better guys this year. Farniok just doesn’t have the ability to be effective (enough) to be a starter. Samia looked like a different player in the second half, and outside of a rough first quarter for Brown, I thought he also showed improvement as the game went on.

No question we need to get the mistakes out of the way this week, but after reviewing the O-line performance myself (and now seeing your take), I feel a lot better than I did after the game.

Thought it interesting Trotter predicted TN over OU this Saturday b/c he said he can’t get 48-14 and the bowl game out of his mind, but he can get 3-34 Tenn loss to Ole Miss and 10-34 at OU out of his mind.

the real problem with OU was the humid temperatures which got into their amped up minds.
Akron knew going in they were going to lose, they read it in the papers and saw it on TV.
This enabled Akron to play lose and just have fun, OU on the other hand was just so excited because I think this team knows what it is capable of and just expected it to be handed to them.
I also think that this comes from not hitting in practice like we did in the day of Switzer, he rarely worried about injuries just got guys ready to play.
Flip it over baba, OU goes into a relaxed posture against an excited fired up, being talented, playing loose and confident is money in my mind.
