That’s EXACTLY what I was going for! I got third at a trivia contest the other day and one of the answers was Shooter McGavin. I came up with it almost immediately and my girlfriend just gave me a dissaproving look.
The early bird gets the worm, but it’s the 2nd mouse that gets the cheese.
Coach Cooks is such a big asset. Hope he sticks around for a while…but I doubt it happens.
About a week from opening day and you want to throw that negativity out there? Stop it.
I second that motion!!
Haha, not trying to be negative. He’s just so good it will be hard to hold onto him for more than a couple of years. I can always hope though!!
Just remember, the glass is not half full or half empty. The glass is completely full. It’s just half water and half air….
saxet QB position was NEVER managed well – Mack loved him some Chrissy Simms, fell into Radar, and tried to miss out on Colt McCoy, but because the kid wanted to be a shorthorn, Mack got lucky.
I still remember Mack Brown admitting that the secret to Vince Young’s success was, they handed him the ball and stopped trying to coach him.
I was amazed. AMAZED, man. He, literally, admitted that he had nothing to do with Vince’s “development,” such as it was.
It’s no wonder the dude sank like a stone in the pros.
They also gave him one receiver to look at, if he was open he would throw it, if not he would run. He could NOT read defenses. But he was very gifted with his feet.
Always thought Young would have been a terrific wide receiver …comparable to Calvin Johnson….
Good morning! BOOMER SOONER! (1 day closer to game time!)
Yes, and after today, I can count down the days on one hand. I’ll let you do the math.

LOL! No need, it was the first thing I said when my alarm went off this morning. π
That’s funny. Make a good Razorback fight song.
HAHAHAHA nice
Good morning all!!! “It’s another great day to be a SOONNER”
Yes it is!
And a BOOMER as well!
Tosh.0 is hilarious on Saban’s little lady size arse! No, I’m not English. What? Well, it’s a literary device. You know- an attention getter. Like putting dashes in the middle of a sentence. Never mind. Watch the video.
Holy hell it’s almost game week!!! BOOMER!
Any AA team that doesn’t even have Samaje Perine as a second team RB, loses all credibility in my book.
They always have Fournette above Perine, for some weird reason. It always seems based on ‘potential’ (read SEC hype), even though Fournette hasn’t shown it yet, and Perine blew away all expectations as a true freshman.
But in the SEC you have to sell your soul to even get 1 yard against SEC defenses.
price of a soul has gone the way of China’s economy.
SEC defenses are tougher to gain yards on than the ’85 Bears
Is there a Priest in the house. Dave is possessed by the ESecPN demons.
And their offenses are better than an Aaron Rodgers led Green Bay offense
The hype is because he played well versus what were touted as “big time SEC defenses,” like Ole Miss and Florida.
Yes, 7-5 Florida, and the Ole Miss defense that TCU kicked in the mouth for talking back.
He wasn’t even in the Top 2 FRESHMEN in college football. That right there would be, Samaje Perine and Nick Chubb.
I’m with you on that. And yet, he will be on the AA teams at the end of the year when it actually means something…..can’t wait to see what he does in the Air Raid offense. No more 8 in the box….oh man, look out. If OUr QB is consistent and doesn’t try to force things, this could be very fun to watch.
Me and the wife were talking last night about game day rituals. Although I have none I was telling her about people I have known over the years and some of theirs. I knew this guy who could only watch the game by his self while placing his coasters just so in formation so the stars would align and he could only drink a certain beer. I believe it was PBR, the phone had to be unplugged and only 1 light could be on. Weird guy but if you ever needed anything he was the fist to offer help. Doe anybody else have any stories? Just something to pass the time I guess. Come on Game Day!!!!!
I wake up, put my Sooner gear on, drink my coffee out of my OU mug, and watch football. Not much else to it.
I first put my OU flag up in front of house, all three dogs are reppin OU bandanas, and I chew my nails and morph into a complete nutjob.
The week before the season starts I do this to my yard.
We did that last year while working in austin lol
If I was not so OCD about my grass, I would totally do that. :-0
yep, a little Round Up would do the job.
I go to this Sydney bar to prepare.
Sooooo, THAT’s where my wife ran off to.
Outstanding.
I refuse to watch big games at a new house. I’ll break it in with Kansas or Sam Houston St type of game.
I’ll be at the OU/KU game.
I begin game day by sticking another pin in my Nick Saban voodoo doll, followed by a spirited derogatory yell about the Trojans to my USC grad neighbor. Then I exile the famliy to the park or the mall – and start watching some ball!
I wear the same AD jersey every game day. I also drive up to Norman and work at one of the bars on Campus Corner. I just love that town on game day, can’t get enough!
If this doesn’t get you pumped, I don’t know what will!

So ready
Have been watching all of Stoop’s coaches shows from that season with the replays of all the games. NC vs. Florida State is tomorrow night. Shows are on FSN.
…
I miss LASooner putting out videos every year. π
Bought my season tickets in spring of 99 season. Lets just say I had a hunch, and it was a good one. π OU vs Nebraska was the highlight. But I did make it to the Orange bowl too. How sweet it was. Was on the field for the trophy presentation. 15 ft away. Aren’t I special. Who else was there?
I’m thinking a Red November in 2015…..don’t know why, just feel it…….
Man we played awesome D
I miss us playing awesome D! I would take a mediocre offense with a stifling D any day! I remember the Rose Bowl when WSU’s coach said he didn’t know he would be playing a D as tough as the Raven’s.
Like 2009 when OU went 8-5? Regrettably, the game has changed.
That was NOT a mediocre offense, that was a really really bad offense.
A great defense can still stop or slow a great offense. Look what Florida did to the Sooners’ record setting offense in the NC. The key to stopping the spread is to clamp down in the red zone, especially against the run. They’ll move the ball between the 20s, but if you hold them to field goals in the RZ you can prevail.
I get your point and they did have a good defense. But I will always look at that game as we beat ourselves and not so much them beating us. If memory serves, playcalls got too cute in the redzone
Definitely some truth to that. Not having DeMarco Murray really hurt on those plays inside the 10.
That was 7 years ago. Alabama has recruited more 5 star defensive talent than anyone in the country the past 5 years. Look what ATM did to them one year, look what Oklahoma did to them, look what Auburn did to them and look what Ohio St. did to them. And TCU had the best “total defense” in the league last season and that didn’t stop Baylor from rolling up 62 points on them. Texas had the best pass defense and probably the best defense in the league given how little their defense helped them and they finished 6-7. The game has simply changed due to philosophies and rules that favor the offenses.
All true, but Bama’s defense was always built to stop the run. They have been slow to adjust. Texas was killed by its offense, but its defense kept them in a lof of games. Baylor’s offense was freakish against TCU last season. Won’t see that knid of shootout this time. No doubt, it’s an offensive game, but thats why you have to have a defense that can at least force enough 3&Os to get your own offense back on the field.
One thing I notice, when watching games from that 2000 season, is how much more sophisticated and faster the offenses we’re facing are now, compared to then. Roy Williams cover skills (lack thereof) would kill us today.
But another thing I notice, is that Mike Stoops was infinitely more aggressive then.
If we can field an aggressive defense, I think we’ve got the personnel to be really good offensively by November.
If Baker can control the turnovers and the DB’s step up I think this could be a special year and oh man next year even better. This team still reminds me a lot of that 2000 NC team for some reason. Some personnel, a month with a tough 3 game stretch (November instead of October), being ranked very low with no expectations (except from us of course), a season last year that was similar to the 1999 season (close but weren’t quite there yet), but mainly a new attitude. They just need to maintain that swagger that the 2000 team had and special things might happen.
Agreed! Here’s hoping BU and OSU are undefeated and TCU has 1 loss (to Ok State) when we play them so that we’re playing an undefeated team on the road the last week of the year! That’s solidifies a playoff spot! #saveusaspot
I miss Ontei Jones
Can someone get me a box of tissues.
Nice article on Shep, and validation that the kid is an elite WR. Not sure why he gets dogged on size. It doesn’t matter where he lines up or against whom, he finds a way to get the ball, Period.
Filet-O-Fish? It looks like someone took a huge dump on a bun.
Looks like a giant bran muffin top, which would result in what you described. π

Good doggie.
I have an aussie and almost named her Sooner. haha
Well my son has her sister and is named Schooner
Wife wouldn’t let me name our dogs Boomer and Sooner.
So I suggested Bach and Offenbach. That was vetoed as well.
lmao
Did you ask her about Darrell & Mack—–two excellent dog names….
I like it.
Name one Snorter and the other one Luster.
That’s good. Neither one is a snorter, however. The Aunt’s dog on Vacation was a real snorter, wasn’t he. Stinky was his name.
I have an aussie too. Best dogs in the world.
Hands down
Is it game day yet?
No.

Love this, Bob. This is what I see every time I open my desk drawer at work. BOOMER!
Daniel : lucky you …..
Watched the preview video and found it interesting, as they made a big deal about OU’s low # of returning starts on the OL. Losing the starter hurts, but Bedenbaugh used a lot of guys, so there is experience there, even if they weren’t starters. I think the OL will do just fine in the new offense.
Agreed Ed
Yep, playing time more important than starts.
the offensive scheme is tailored for O-Lines with some deficiencies…
Bedenbaugh is one of the few coaches on the staff I don’t question. I just know deep down in my gut and into my bowels that OU is going to have a big time OL.
So, if OU takes Eboh, does that mean they can’t take Parker? If there is only 1 slot, would the Sooners not accept Eboh since Parker seems in play?
Word is only 1 more spot open in the secondary.
No seniors in the secondary this year. 8 CBs and 6 safeties. Verbals from 2 CBs and 1 S. That’s alot of players = 17.
Hasn’t Zack Sanchez all but said he is going pro after this year? Or was that just rumor?
I have not heard that. He may or may not. A couple of CBs may transfer, they may not. Who knows.
I believe that Eboh has a committable offer.
I’m all for taking Eboh if Cooks thinks he’s good enough. Take the first one who jumps at the chance
That’s how he’s done his business. He warned the players that he would the first ones to commit.
Thompson the S and Parker the CB were said to be a package deal, but now Thompson has allegedly been told that there’s no spot for him.
So the last spot is apparently between Parker and Eboh and it’s first one to commit gets it. Thompson already waited too long.
Yep…And that’s how it should be done. You snooze you lose
So do they tell Eboh no spot, and hold it for Parker?
With the exception of a few, I won’t name you because you know who you are, I believe all of us here feel the stock of this team has more value than the national perception. OU was a few plays away from having a better season than what it posted in 2014.
However, in bad situations, there is more good than what appears to be on the surface. For one, it was a good thing we played Clemson. The team was embarrassed. Had OU won more games, they might not have gone to the Russell Athletic Bowl and faced Clemson. Two, because of the loss, Heuple and Norvell are gone, otherwise they might still be here.
Nothing against Heuple, but it was frustrating to see so much talent get misused. The receivers seem to have more energy than they have the previous years.
In reading some of your posts, I can see the optimism. There is a bottled up desire to tell the nation of non-believers where they can put their opinions of OU: somewhere in a dark place.
We are ready because we believe that this team will bark and will bite.
This will not be a fluke. Oklahoma is all about bouncing back and being resilient. Be patient. Enjoy each week’s victory. As for the National Title: #JustWaitOnIt, it’s coming in 2015.
Here Here excellent post sam
I “hear” ya’.
Thank you!
If they make it out of Knoxville undefeated(depends on the OL)…look out!
I’m excited, but I’m trying to keep my expectations in check until after that game. After that … sky’s the limit!
Yep, I think that is everyone’s thoughts right now…well almost everyone anyway, a few that think the season is already lost
OU always has a chance and the players. As always, great team play, limit TOs and penalties, stay healthy, and a dose of Sooner Magic and BOOM!
TO’s and busted coverages are going to be key. I think the team can survive a few games scoring only 27 if they correct those two things from last year
Yeah, the turnover ration last year was bad. It will be flipped this year, and that alone will notch an extra 2 wins.
Yeah OU was tied for 95th in turnover ratio.
The OL will either flourish or be exposed in Knoxville…
I give them a chance to be good, simply because they have to practice against Striker and Tapper everyday.
Exposed? We’re ranked 19th Stephen. We are young at OL/DL/Secondary…etc…
Learn how terms are used sir. Exposed is reserved for teams with great expectations or hype. Currently, we have neither.
I’m worried about both UTs. The UT to the south is under tremendous pressure to beat OU. I have friends inside the program and they said that the game that kills them is losing to OU. It’s been that way for a few years now and according to him it’s been made clear to the team and Strong that they want OU. I think we will be better and have a psychological advantage in the BU game although I don’t know if that is enough. OU will have the players attention from getting creamed two years in a row and having to play them at BU. I think we beat TCU. UT east, BU and UT south frighten me the most.
Whorns can’t score.
Other than not caring one little bit what the rest of the nation thinks about OU football I agree with you.
I like this team.
I do care about the nation’s perspective because I’m tired of the SEC winning the battle of public opinion. Had we still had the old BCS system in place last season, Bama would probably be the national champ, and we would never have seen Ohio State knock their blocks off. Like OU did the year before.
As long as the sec and espn are tied together financially, they will always get more pub.
As for the nation’s perception of Sooner football, they can all go suck a dictionary page. We win on the field what they think or say is meaningless.
YES! I quit watching E$PN when they come out with the $ec network… The only time I watch E$PN now is if the Sooners are playing football, basketball, or baseball on there.
or Little League World Series
Love watching those young ballers.
Yep, I forgot about that one.
Me too. But the College day game crew said OU will be the “fly in the ointment” for Baylor/TCU. Also, another ESPN commentator said OU would be in the playoffs this year. Now, this may be the kiss of death. But at least the are not discounting us.
agreed 100%.
Well, it’s still a bit of a beauty contest as to who gets to the final four. And views of conference and team strength definitely play a factor, especially with the committee. So I want OU and the Big 12 to have a strong national perception that may tip the balance in our favor.
Yep. How come no one is mentioning that only the Big 12 has two top five teams? When OU knocks both off, we will be the only school to have beaten two top 5 schools! We will have the strongest argument to get into the playoff!

Preach it brother! My optimism started the day I heard Norvell was gone. I always thought he did a bad job with our receivers, and there was proof of that all over the place last year when Sterling went down!
Three letters of concern: OL, S
If those work well, then one number: #8
Two letters for reason not to be concerned: DL. I think they will get pressure often this year. If that works, then numbers 8,9, and 10 are possible.
This is a young team. We should be even better next year, assuming the team chemistry is good.
Agreed. There is a lot of talent on this team.
I’m pumped! I’m just trying not to get too excited yet … but it’s hard not to.
I’ve been fighting it for two months now!
I’m going to focus on 2015 before becoming concerned about 2016 but we will need to be a lot better in 2016 when the Buckeyes visit Norman on Sept 17 otherwise we might again be embarassed..
But if we do, then the guys with the little marijuana plants on their helmets will be the ones embarrassed!
Talented, sure. Unproven, definitely. To say they won’t be a potential cause for concern is a bit naive. I think perhaps being cautiously optimistic is more appropriate. We’re aware that the talent is there, but there are lots of new faces and a new coach, so we’ll have to see how it unfolds throughout the season. All the right ingredients to be a special group.
I will see your 3 letters of concern & raise you 2 more: MS. I am not convinced he has any more clue how to defend Baylor or other “modern” offenses than he did last year. Coach Cooks seems to be a great addition, but I doubt MS will allow him to play more aggressive coverages. At the first sign of trouble, he’ll revert back to his soft cover 3 shell & allow 7-yard hitches all day long. I will never forget or forgive Baylor’s 1st drive of the second half last year. Haven’t been that embarrassed since John Blake was the coach.
At least he’s been sent into exile in the press box.
But he is still in charge. I am all for MS being the D Coach, but I think we all need to see an improvement in points allowed. After all, that’s the only important D stat. But not turning the ball over on O, not having so many three and outs will also help the D to stay off the field.
Exacly. OU had WAY too many 3&Os last season, which stressed the D. Inexperience in the secondary caused some issues as well. Should be a much improved unit, which will also benefit from increased QB pressure. We’re going to see some impressive oskie talllies this year.
The Sooners finished 102nd in the country in 3&0’s.
Right on with the contribution an offense that is dynamic and can avoid 3&O’s will make for the defense. I foresee it possible with a dynamic offense that we average 6+ more points on offense and 6+ fewer points on defense.
Without question if we do both we will contend with the Bears and Frogs for the B12 championship and a chance to make Herbie a real clairvoyant.
I’d like to see OU average at least 7 pts more a game on O, and at least 3 pts less a game on D. W/more possessions, I think that might be a huge improvement for the D. I think the D could show NO improvement and average 3 pts less a game perhaps if we don’t turn the ball over or have pick 6s.
Glad to see people holding grudges over a game
I wish people would remember the amazing, attacking game plan we had when we played them in Waco two years ago. It was beautiful. Unfortunately our offense didn’t move the ball and the defense wore out quickly from being on the field so much. Mike can coach, we just need the right personnel for certain schemes.
yeah it was a good looking defense until we couldn’t figure out how to move the chains. and the d got tired and then the pushoff to ice the cake. i agree completely
We didn’t have the right players to play press at CB last year. Plus the Ss were too slow reading the play and coming over to help.
When they did play press, they got burned.
Watch the osu game and Jordan Thomas against osu’s Shepard, who is a big physical receiver. When Thomas tried to press him, he just shoved him aside and ran wide open down the field.
By next year, the coaches will have completely remade the secondary with much better players than we’ve been seeing. They signed 6 this year and will have 4 more next year. The players will be faster and more physical than what we’ve been seeing.
I’m not convinced MS has forgotten how to coach. Sure I’ve been disappointed the last couple of years, but all three sides of the ball have to support each other for there to be any sustained level of success across the board. I believe our offense truly was the weak link last season and this year will prove that.
In Bedengbaugh I trust.
Still worried about S though.
I think Cooks will get the safeties head back in the game!
I feel you.
I don’t believe that the talent was that good last year at WR. Most of the WRs from last year are gone or buried on the depth chart, except for Shep and Neal. We also have a new starting QB, so that tells you something as well.
I know to many of you that Josh is the Great Satan, but the talent wasn’t that great at QB and WR.
Josh is gone and so is Norvell. Obviously there’s a reason they were replaced, but hey, it’s a new season, let’s stop b..ing about last year’s coaches and focus on this year.
JH was a part of the problem, since he was in charge of QB recruiting and development and Norvell for WRs. The development wasn’t there. That’s why both are gone IMO.
Exactly. But they are gone and it’s time to stop complaining about them and focus on the new coaches and players.
Agreed. I think Im most excited for Dede Westbrook. He was playing at a different speed than the rest of the guys in the Spring game.
I’m thrilled about the arrival of Westbrook but I am more excited about the potential contribution of Jeffery Mead and Mark Andrews. I also think that Daniel Brooks is going to surprise some folks this year.
With so many more talented WRs this year, teams won’t be able to focus on Shep. If they do, they will get burned. Baker needs to make good decisions, go through his reads, and make the throws. If he does and if he gets good protection, the sky is the limit for this offense. We know what we have in the backfield.
Yeah, any word on how Quick is playing?
Heard some things that he’s coming along. He should be in the rotation. Needs to improve his catching.
thanks, sounds like more of the same from last year
This.
Yep, you and I saw the same game alright.
I’m pretty sure the common consensus is that Norvell was a fantastic recruiter but poor with regards to player development. I don’t necessarily buy into the fact that talent wasn’t there … I think it was there, just poorly developed. We’ve all seen teams seemingly do more with “lesser” talent. With a radical change in the coaching staff and 2 new WR coaches, in a matter of a couple of years, we’ll have a sufficient sample size to analyze.
…
I grok what you are saying.
You convinced me. But I’m easy, I thought Schnellenburgler was going to win it all..
I do believe Shnelly spent more time bar hopping than game planning.
I did too.
Drunk or not, Snelly knew football. If he hadn’t pissed off Boren and gotten himself fired, he’d have won a lot of games. Blake, on the other hand, didn’t know the difference between a screen pass and a screen door and had NO business getting the job at OU and the program suffered mightily on his watch. Going back in time, I still wonder what would’ve happened if Merv Johnson got the job over Gary Gibbs. Gibbs was a fine man and a defensive whiz, but struggled to beat UT, CU and NU. I think coach Merv would’ve been more successful.
For the sake of full disclosure, i admit I’m biased toward Merv. I wanted to see him get the HC job at OU.
Me, too…..
Gibbs played with one arm tied behind his back from the scholly restrictions. He was good for the program and kept us from getting the death penalty axe that the NCAA was hoping to swing. Great Sooner.
Amen brutha!!!!!!
I just bounced off the ceiling!
VERY well said!
Got to show it every week! Good post Sam!
Ohhhhhhh, yeeeeaaaahhhh!!! What you said.
The national title game is in 2016, though. π I’m kidding, but really it’s on Monday, January 11th, 2016.
I love you, man.
What’s up, Dustin?
Just enjoying a nice, lazy Thursday. How’s life treating you, brother?
All good. The kids went back to school today. Getting ready for football.
We started last Wednesday and I though that was late. Geez
I know. We are real late here. But the Catholic Schools and some of the surrounding schools started two weeks ago.
This team will surprise this year!
I’ve drank too much crimson kook-aide over the past 5-7 years. The O will be fine if the OL, and in particular the tackles, gell quickly and plays well. More experience and depth on the D will be helpful. The key to success will be the D and does anybody have confidence that Mike can scheme to slow down BU or even TCU for that matter. But, it’s almost September and we are still undefeated. Time for HCBS to show he is worth that Top 5 paycheck. Boomer!

Sooooo..It’s obvious I’m ready for the season to start…I dreamed about this 2015 Sooner team last night. It was Joe Mixon’s first carry of his career against Akron. He took the handoff to the left side of the line..the DE crashed down so he bounced it outside, cut up field and made one move on a linebacker and with blazing speed took it 80 yards to the house. I was so impressed with his speed and so excited about what i just witnessed I jumped up out of bed and nearly woke my wife up. Lord help me make until next Saturday!!
Wow, you are Debbie Downer! Alex is going to return the opening kickoff to at least midfield, so Joe can’t go further than 50 yards on his first carry.
I was thinking OU would kickoff and force a three-and-out
with suffocating DB play and two backers chasing the QB every play! We both had the same dream! It must be true.
I really felt sorry for their QB when Striker and Bond sandwiched him on 3rd down. I wouldn’t have been able to get back up after that one
I thought it would be a Notre Dame 2013 type deal where we get a pick six on the very first 3rd down of the game.
Dude. If this happens on the first play of the game for Joe Mixon. Then Damn.
Sounds vaguely similar to AD’s run against Bowling Green.
I had a bizarre dream last night that I was on an elevator with a friend and 2 other people got on the elevator to rob us at knifepoint. Ultimately, I took his arm and pushed it repeatedly to where the guy bled out, but I was scared to death he might have been diseased and worried that my exposure to all that blood would infect me too.
I have no idea what that dream was about. All I can say is this: I like your dream much better!
Whose ready for some OU football?

That pic has been saved to my gallery! #BoomerSooner
for scientific purposes, I assume.
Testing the effects of gravity, no doubt.
Of course!
O hell yes
Holy MOLY!!!!
There are always these two as well.
Thats my fav wondered if it would be posted
I couldn’t help myself! LOL My wife just rolls her eyes when I pull this picture up. I usually do it in the office when she is getting on me for making a mistake.
And they say there are no mountains in Oklahoma. Phew, what do they know?
The girls in the South Endzone do NOT look like that. lol
Athletes. You can tell by the size of their lungs.
Herbstreit picks Ohio State to repeat… Where was it that you went to school again, Kirk? What’s that? Oh really, Ohio State?? Go figure.
Edit: Smart to pick his alma mater though; who in the big 10 can beat them?
To be fair to Kirk so does everybody else
I know, I like to have my laughs though haha. They are a very talented looking team.
I didn’t go to Ohio St
Funny man, you are.
He really talked OU up, too…
Herbstreit is usually objective when it comes to tOSU. He gets a lot of flack from the fans here, in Ohio, for not talking tOSU up more than he does.
Well…….it’s not really hard to see why anybody would make that pick.
They are the #1 team, returning a lot of guys that won it all last year, and they’ll have good QB play. Plus, they are nearly guaranteed to win the Big 10.
I think they probably make the Playoffs, but lose there.
Ryan Bartow from 247 is reporting that OL Joncarlo Valentin will visit Sept 5th.
http://247sports.com/Player/Johncarlo-Valentin-36677
Signed up just to post this. Herbstreit picked OU to win the Big XII and go to the CFP.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/13516442/herbie-award-candidates-winners-2015-kirk-herbstreit-college-football
I typically respect what Herbie has to say unless it involves tOSU
To be fair, it’s hard to bet against them this year. Now, some of his player picks for his “Herbies” are questionable. But his NC pick for tOSU is fine with me.
No doubt about that, they are #1 and deservedly so
I’ve seen him be critical of Ohio State on occasion. Not his fault they are a pretty salty group in recent years.
true
He’s pretty analogous to Spencer Tillman, who has no problem being proud of OU when we’re doing well and critical when we’re not living up to our potential. And I have no problem with that.
Agreed. I think he’s been pretty objective toward tOSU over the years.
Just to sort of echo what the others said a little, I’m sure he can keep his bias in check. Just look at how much criticism there is of OU on this site. Just because you love a team doesn’t mean that you can’t pick out its flaws, or see where improvements should be made.
Thanks for posting this!
No problem; just happened to check ESPN.com at the right time.
And that’s hard to do, as there are so many wrong times to watch ESPN. Paul Finebaum comes to mind.
Herb is one of the few ESPNers who refuses to be a lackey to the SEC. And he’s pretty fair-minded about the Big 10, too.
Herbie’s been a fan of Bob’s for a long time, but I’m a little surprised to hear that only because I heard him say before last season that OU keeps stumbling in games they should win. He said that until OU proved they coild stop losing that 1 game that they shouldn’t lose, he couldn’t pick them to make the CFP. I’m glad he’s back on the bandwagon.
http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/102568/perception-isnt-reality-for-big-12-defenses
Good article on defenses in the big 12 being pretty decent when you take into account the number of possessions and plays they face. OU ranked 25th in the nation in points per possession last year.
Combine this with the stat quoted in the video above. “Oklahoma was ranked 102 in possessions that did not result in a first down or touch down.” That shows why Stoops thought the offense needed to be revamped and not the defense. The D was doing a decent job not giving up scores on any give possession, but the O was giving the other team more chances to score without putting any points on the board themselves. They were also not giving the D a chance to rest by not getting at least a few first downs.
Amen! I guess Mike actually is still a halfway decent D-Coordinator!
It’s all Kish’s fault any ways.
“That’s a bunch of crap! They’re DEEP at backer!”…in case you don’t listen to 1400 KREF..thats a Lehman reference
Indeed. It was his fault back in the 2004 national title game, too. Couldn’t prevent anything.
Exactly. The OU defense needs to improve, but when you factor in things like pace, possessions, etc, we weren’t nearly as bad as some made us out to be. And that goes back to the days of BV as our DC too.
I will admit…I wasn’t necessarily beating the drum to fire Venables but I was beating the drum to have Mike come in and take over…Please correct me if this is wrong but I thought there were a lot of issues with Venables’ Ds…Primarily speed in the secondary. He routinely trotted out Corners that ran 4.7 and safeties that ran 4.8 along with linebackers and d-ends that ran 4.9 and 5.0. I didn’t feel like he recruited or used speed very well. I would love to have Venables on this team coaching Linebackers though. Saying that, I wasn’t one pushing to have Kish fired either, I just think Venables can coach some dang linebackers.
How is it Venables’ fault if the secondary is slow of foot? He didn’t recruit those guys, right?
I think if you applied the same logic as above to the BV defenses, they’d have looked “okay” too. The problem is too many OU fans, or football fans in general, don’t understand why points per possession is a far better measure than points per game.
Venables also had an overreliance on zone defense and those soft cushions we all love. I wanted Mike to come back too, and he did exactly what I expected in 2012, which was primarily man coverages. Go back and see how much our pass D improved in 2012, as it was considerable. Then, he reverted to the things that got BV pushed out of town. Still makes me scratch my head.
Because it’s Schmitty’s fault.
How is it Schmitty’s fault? He’s been part of NC teams for at least 3 different universities. I’d say he’s pretty damn good at his job. You can’t make a slow guy fast no matter how good you are as a strength & conditioning coach. You might improve his speed by a 2-3 hundredths of a second (to perhaps a full second if a player wasn’t well-trained coming out of HS and has a lot of untapped capacity) which is mostly neurological adaptation to speed drills, but unless that same player loses 40 LBs, their is a pretty fixed ceiling on how much a player can increase their speed. You won’t see a 4.75 guy suddenly become a 4.45 guy.
Venables had some good, but not great defenses on the whole. The 2009 defense was quite good. Many others were good or average.
And I’m not even getting into the different statistical methods for calculating team defense. Some stats would indicate that Venables’ defenses were “efficient.”
One thing that is clear on the Internet, people are not capable of factoring context into results. You hear things like: “I know we started eleven true freshman on offense, but we should never be out of the top ten.” People like Stoops have to do that or that don’t solve the real issues. Fortunately, he is a little smarter than people on message boards.
I sure hope so!
Nuh-uh. Not me.
hypocrisy knows no bounds on the ol’ internet machine. “i am not perfect in anything i do, but i demand it of my university’s football team”
I think most people would have been fine without a perfect season, but would be a lot happier if OU hadn’t underachieved so much last season and done so in such an embarrassing fashion. Losing to Baylor the way we diid along with Mike’s meltdown, then our inability to secure a 21 point lead against a bad oSu team that lost 5 in a row has a tendency to leave fans unhappy.
why is it underachieving? because some people on the internet or tv said they were going to do such and such? people need to get national championship or bust out of their heads. people need to let life and sports seasons play out instead of trying to figure it out all the time. when you think your team is gonna be awesome, do you have the mental makeup to not come on a message board and rant and rave like an 8 yr old abstain from beating your wife or kicking your dog? some do, some don’t
Interesting take, since Bob said it from day one on the job at his press conference that OU fans should have high expectations every year, that the bar should be set high, and that he accepts that and was a big part of why he came here. He said we should expect to contend for championships every year.
I certainly hope no one goes home & beats their wife or kicks their dog, but I guess it’s possible given how crazy some people are, as evidenced by the reporter killing yesterday.
Maybe it’s time to just put last season in the rear view mirror and look forward to a new start, new personnel, new chances in a new year because it’s ALMOST TIME! Aren’t you excited at all about that and exhausted talking about 2014? GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!! BOOMER!!
Another issue is reactionary thinking. People jump to conclusions and want to blame the easiest target. What is required is calm, rational thinking. Analyze the situation. Sometimes it takes several years to come to a conclusion.
Problem is, points per possession is meaningless; points per game is the crucial stat and we gave up far too many points per game.
This is so wrong on so many levels.
Agreed. It is wrong on so many levels to give up more points than the opposing team. I’m pretty sure that the ol’ scoreboard stat trumps all others.
Not if you actually want to fix the problem.
precisely. scoreboard doesn’t you much about how it got that way.
We seem to be in a national mood of insisting on simple answers to hard problems. Sometimes the answers are hard, too.
I was not agreeing with you.
In response to a post on defensive points per possession you responded like this:
“Problem is, points per possession is meaningless; points per game is the crucial stat and we gave up far too many points per game.”
So are you now retracting your original statement and admitting that you were wrong?
i don’t think you were replying to me. In the event, I was agreeing with your position.
Sorry I saw no avatar and mistook Jed for J B. Didn’t read close enough.
no worries.
I think it’s JB you who said that, Bob.
Yeah I figured that out. The lack of an avatar and the short name beginning with J tripped me up.
You still don’t get it. And I’m not sure I feel like taking the time to explain it. If a team’s offense plays fast and creates extra possessions, a) that team should score more, thus allowing the D to give up more and still win games, and b) their D will face extra possessions.
It is not fair to expect OU’s defense to give up the same number of points or few than Bama’s defense, IF our defense is facing more possessions. That should be common sense.
Hahaha wowβ¦and they say Mike doesnβt understand βmodernβ offenses
its amazing how many people claim to be not negative. but when they post all they do is bash something or someone or bring up the most negative thing they can think of
I never thought of honesty as a negative. Making an argument that we only averaged giving up x points per play is jibberish when your opponent is running a boatload of plays and scoring a boatload of points. I take no solace after that Baylor loss or oSu loss because points per play didn’t factor into the outcome…whatever points per play we have is too damn many.
its definitely not just this. everything you say is negative. everything. you may not be dale but you’re related
Clearly you haven’t read my posts on our offense & special teams. Now. you resort to name-calling, the surest sign that a person can’t win on the merits of their argument.
i’m sorry i hurt your feelings. i looked it up in the dictionary and “dale” doesn’t come up in the name calling section. it still doesn’t “gloss over the fact” that everything and i repeat EVERYTHING you post is negative. nobody wants to listen to your argument or take it seriously because you have a blinding hatred of mike. you keep saying you don’t but everything points to this. do you have ray finkle type obsessions about him? i would almost wager money. what you are, is a hypocrite(whoops, another name call). you are nowhere near perfect but seem to demand of a freaking sports team
Feelings not hurt. I’m not made of wet tissue like some others here. But please don’t insult anyone’s intelligencey by pretending that the “Dale” comment wasn’t intended as a negative. Don’t worry, i don’t take anything here personally, it’s a message board full of persons (and possibly bots) that are nameless and faceless that I’ll never meet except by coincidence.
I have no idea who Ray Finkle is. If you say everything I post is negative then you clearly haven’t read my posts.
I never claimed perfection here, nor did I say I expect it every year. There’s a reason why few schools have double digit NCs (1 at last count). But in EVERY job, if your performance wanes and you fail to meet your goals, you lose your job. That’s especially true in football.
If you ever read my posts on scout.com (before TFB) you would also know that I was the biggest MS supporter. I wanted him here because I believed he’d restore our defense to the championship level. Then he changed his philosophy and keeps changing it and the results haven’t been so hot. I predicted that in year 3, we’d have an elite D. I was wrong. I’ve read on this board that Josh needed to go because his offense kept changing. Why should it be any different for MS? Why does he deserve special treatment? His last name? There’s a reason he’s not coaching the secondary anymore and has been relegated to the booth. That’s not a vote of confidence.
If the D performs well this year, I’ll be more than happy to give due credit. It’s a win-win if they do. I believe we’ll win at least 2 more games this season by virtue of the ability to outscore opponents with a high-scoring offense. I still want to see a better D that keeps opponents from putting more points on the scoreboard. Defense wins championships. I don’t think we are a NC caliber team this year but I believe we have the talent to be one in the next 2-3 years.
Finkle is Einhorn….
that’s how all you guys operate. you get on here and bash(you can’t stand mike or trevor or so it seems and if someone calls you on it you change your tune a little). you bash a guy for you buying in to him coming in and being a turning point for the defense and bash him because according to you he shouldn’t have a job but does just cause of his brother. you bash a kid for not being a very good quarterback within someone’s system but don’t wanna give him a chance in someone else’s. you bash a head coach for keeping his brother on staff only because he’s his brother. you don’t KNOW anything. again, YOU ARE NOT IN MEETINGS. YOU ARE NOT A FLY ON THE WALL IN THEIR OFFICES. you make all this crap seem like its the way it should be. its every single freaking day you are on here. until you are called on it, you just rant on and on because you were one of the ones who went all in with bob when we won in his 2nd yr and thought about how many titles we would win with him in charge. and now you are bitter because we’re still on 1. you guys bash someone and then say “i hope i’m wrong”. wow! that’s incredible. what a may to live life. “i think we’re gonna suck and i know these guys suck, but i hope i’m wrong”. move on with your life. good gracious. buying all in is no one’s fault but your own. UNCLE
So, despite us dominating OSU before Perine got hurt, and then our O completely stalling, and STILL up 7 before a repunt that he had no control over got run back for a TD, it’s MS’ fault? Ok, you’re officially trolling now.
No, that was a combination of many factors, like Bob’s stupid re-punt. Our QB play was atrocious in crunch time with CT. But we surrendered 38 points. Our D wasn’t stellar by any stretch of the imagination. Our O wasn’t very good toward the end of the 2000 season, because of Josh’s injured elbow, shoulder and wrist. Did that hurt us against the #1 Offense in the country? No, because our D shut them down. That’s what I want to see again.
You’re right, it was a combination of many factors. Which is why I think you blaming the D for that loss is ridiculous. Was it stellar? No, but it should have been enough to win that game.
I absolutely want to go back to the years of dominant D, sure, but our secondary last year was just far too inexperienced to hold up in a passing league. Yet we were still competitive in every game last year except Baylor (and even then, our D did a very good job in the first half). With Parker and the Thomas’ having a year under their belts, I expect the secondary, and thus the D, to be much better this year. Dominant? No, but good leaning towards great imo.
They didn’t even attempt a pass on the last 4 possessions, when a single first down would have clinched the game. osu loaded the box with 10 players and still no pass. Gotta think the orders came from the HC.
Had the whistle been blown when it should have been, Perine would not have been injured or fumbled and the O would put that drive in the EZ. They would have put OU up by 3 TDs in the 3rd and game over.
But JB, if the points per play was zero, it would.
What Matt is trying to point out is that the defense performed very well, given how much they were on the field. If the offense had performed better, who knows what might have been.
You lost me at “the D performed well.”
I’d love 0 pts per play, but that goes hand in hand with my original point that SCOREBOARD trumps all. Let’s be realistic here. The article is one that’s designed to make a negative not look so negative, when the reality was that our D was terrible. Even Mike admitted it was mistake that they sold out to stop the run (odd in a passing league) last year. Was that our most prolific offense last year? No, but it was 23rd in the country in scoring, but yes, you can’t ignore TK’s costly late game pick 6s either. What was our pass D again? 112 & dead last in conference? Hard to gloss over that. And it wasn’t just the secondary, it was the whole D. Inability to pressure the QB from the DL or LB position combined with near constant zone hurt us.
Like I said above, if you look at 2012 when we went to a heavy man coverage scheme, we improved from 79th the previous year in Pass D to 29th. We also beat TCU and the pass-happy teams Baylor (or Gaylor as I like to call them), WVU and oSu.
I’m not sure what to tell you. You can have it your way. Last year is gone. I’m looking forward to this season.
One final thing: I’m not sure if your “Gaylor” reference is appropriate. If I am to assume correctly, you’re making a “gay” reference, then in your own words “that’s designed to make a negative not look so negative.” That’s offensive to me, as I have friends and relatives who are gay. I would appreciate it if you could delete or edit your post not to include “Gaylor.”
I agree
Done.
I’ve read almost this entire thread discussing defensive statistics and how it was a poor performance last season by the defense that cost us last season and I have to say that I strongly disagree with your statement.
Did the defense have problems? You bet. Struggles on that side of the ball did bite us big at times in games last year, especially where the play of our safeties was concerned, but when you look at the five games we lost in their entirety, only one of them can be truly pinned on the defense and its poor performance. Baylor. Outside of that, to say anything different is purely wrong and here’s why:
When the game was on the line and someone needed to make a big play the defense made those plays.
TCU – 4th Quarter game tied at 31. Trevor Knight throws a pick 6, score is 37-31 TCU with 14:51 left to play. The defense steps up on the ensuing play when they block the PAT and Sanchez returns it the length of the field for 2 points. The defense then plays lights out for the rest of the game, forcing two fumbles inside the TCU 35 yard line. One with 7:02 left to play and the other one two plays later with 6:07 left to play after Trevor Knight threw another INT on the first play from scrimmage after the defense recovered the first fumble. TCU gets the ball back once more after that possession and the defense forces a 3 and out while our offense gets two possessions and runs 13 plays, but fails to score the 5 points needed to win the game despite having 5:49 to do so.
KSU – Trevor Knight throws a pick six, Durron Neal throws an INT in the endzone on a trick play, Michael Hunnicut has a PAT blocked to make the score 31-30 KSU going into 4th Quarter. The defense doesn’t allow KSU to score again, but the offense can’t score the 2 points we need to win after Hunnicut misses a field goal from the 2 yard line with 19 seconds left to play.
OSU – Perine is the offense and becomes injured. The defense manages to preserve a 7 point lead and Zach Sanchez makes what should have been the game winning interception with 3:16 left to play in the 4th quarter, but the offense goes 3 and out – failing to run out the clock and with 51 seconds left to play we decide to re-kick a punt to Tyreek hill. OSU returns it for a TD, ties the game and we lose in OT.
The Clemson game doesn’t count in my opinion because I don’t feel like anyone besides Ripkowski and Perine actually showed up to play in that game. I’ve never in my life seen an OU team come out that flat, EVER.
You can say what you want about the defense not being great, and I’ll agree with you that the secondary was horrible. But to try and pin last season on them and call them terrible as a whole is just wrong.
Defense wins championships, but they can’t score all of the points to help you do so. A defense’s job is to prevent the opposing offense from scoring and barring that, to place their offense in position to win at the end of the game. I believe based on that definition, our defense did their job last year, in spite of their struggles.
The offense, special teams, and an inexcusable decision by the head ball coach were what cost us games last year. And when you look at those three areas as a whole, it was the poor performance of the offense when the game was on the line, more than anything else, that prevented us from winning. Hence why Bob fired Josh Heupel and Jay Norvel during the offseason.
I love this team and I truly believe they will exceed expectations this year. BOOMER SOONER!!!
When you only look at measurements that back your argument, anybody could be correct. Both metrics are useful and tell a story. Time of possession would be a good measure to support his theory but I think that can be skewed when the opposition scores quickly. In other words, if we run three plays and punt we run 2 maybe 3 minutes off. BU (for example) could score (and I don’t want to think about it but pretty sure they did) in 2 or 3 minutes easily. This would cause the TOP to be equal.
Seems logical to me.
Ate my Wheaties today. π
That’ll do it every time.
Time of possession…I think a big key to defensive success is keeping the D off the field (and the opponents’ D on the field), and the rapid scoring of the air raid HUNH does put the D at a disadvantage. In that sense, I don’t think Josh was wrong. We did an excellent job of burning up game clock in 2013, like Bell’s 8 minute drive in stoolwater. But constantly changing the offense (albeit at Bob’s behest) was a problem. I think Riley’s going to be successful here, and we’ll likely lose him to a head coaching job in 1-2 seasons. But if we score frequently & quickly, that exposes the D to more plays.
I’m a fan of what I call the hurry up & wait principle…don’t huddle, line up quickly, and run down the play clock (varying when you snap the ball).
You do realize your post supports what he posted?
Yes. We agree TOP is a big factor. Where we split is on the premise of the article being that the defense “wasn’t that bad.” It was THAT bad.
I know this might be taboo over here but I’m just asking out of curiosity…Does anyone know how Texas is planning to use Malik Jefferson? The way I’ve heard people talk it sounds like he’ll be a middle ‘backer but his HS film is almost all of him on the outside in a 3-4
No idea here because I don’t follow UT foorball
Looks like that might be a better question to ask over at the texas.thefootballbrainiacs site.
Hopefully not very well in October
Placekicker.
Given their recent history, he is probably the best quarterback on the roster.
I heard that he’s having trouble in his Spanish class. Hmmmm…..
Don’t know…don’t care.
We will find out in just over a month, though.

If he’s on the field Oct 10th, he’ll be used as a speed bump by Perine.
G-Day minus 9.
Finally down to the single digit midget numbers.
Mark Clayton AA – Lonnie Finch – Anthony Fogle
Mark Clayton AA
I look forward to us finding the Mark this season.

Oh how I miss Mark Clayton!
And Jason White.
Yes, Jason too!
oh how i miss Ryan Broyles!
And Kenny Stills!
This.
YAC!
Dede will be the YAC guy this year, him and Shep of course.
Shep is great, but I don’t think he has the YAC prowess that Clayton had. Of course, he didn’t have White throwing to him; that may have been the biggest factor.
Yeah, a lot of YAC can be a QB who is accurate enough to hit a guy in stride. If you don’t have to slow down for the ball, it’s a lot easier to cover more yards.
and Mixon

1. Mark Clayton had a burst that was insane.
2. Mark Clayton could go up and make the tough catch, even in traffic.
3. Jason White could throw a helluva deep ball.
4. Our other receivers were excellent downfield blockers.
Awesome
Correct on ALL points!
Prior to the 70s, OU rarely–if ever–used single digit uniform numbers.
I did not realize that. Thanks

Here is the video of Herbie picking OU to win the Big XII

I’m sure he will go into more detail on the Herbies Special tonight on ESPN2 at 5.
I was telling my kids the other day about the Green M&M and eating it would help you hit a grand slam. They were amazed. Anybody else remember those type of things when you were a kid?
No, but i do remember what I was told about Green M&Ms as an adult. Grand slam does have a different meaning in my version. π
There were some others around during my college days. But they were sold singly. In little wax paper envelopes. Good prior to a concert.
LOL
I heard Bob Stoops say yesterday that TK got the second most votes for captain and that the vote was held last Thursday. Does anyone feel perhaps that his teammates thought he would/should be named the starter?
No not really.
nah. from everything i’m hearing here it seems like they rally around mayfield, but love knight like a brother
That’s what Dusty says. He gets into practices and he said it’s very clear who the team thinks their leader is, and it’s Mayfield.
Im betting the team knew who was going to be selected QB, this is more out of respect for Knight and his leadership on and off the field.
I don’t understand why people find it so hard to believe that they would vote one of last years captains and leaders so high even though he may not be the starter. Knight was one of the guys that led all the leaders to Haiti last year and has carried himself like a natural born leader since day one. He’s popular amongst teammates… does not surprise me one bit they would choose him as captain AGAIN even if they were unsure who would get the start.
P.S. listening to Traber discuss and give his dumbass opinion on this subject makes me want to board a plane, fly back home to OKC, and punch him in his fat face…. but that’s pretty much how I always feel when he opens his mouth π
You’ll need to get in line.
http://newpathstopurpose.org/uploads/images/LogicLongLines.jpg
Teddy Lehman brought up the point the other day that as a team, no matter howuch you like a guy on your team, even if he’s your roommate or best friend, you want THE BEST player to play, especially at QB. I think they all like Trevor personally as do most of us. But from what we’ve seen on the field, I think we could all agree that we need better QB play than what he delivers. Doesn’t change the fact that we like him as a person.
My response to a teammate/friend in the same position when they’re voted team captain.
“Cool, you take care of the morale stuff, I’ll take care of winning games…”
For anyone who thinks all that matters is “fixing the defense”. Here are the top five schools in defensive points per game along with their record.
Ole Miss 9-4
Stanford 8-5
Clemson 10-3
Temple 8-5
LSU 8-5
Our record pretty much matches theirs. Obviously there is more to it than just defense.
FWIW: Of the four teams in the playoffs, only one (Alabama) was in the top ten.
Adjusted stats tells a pretty similar story, although Ohio State and TCU move into the top 10 there along with Alabama. TCU is #5.
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feidef
Oh, don’t bring in the Football Outsiders, they actually try to do some real analysis. It’s much easier to argue if you ignore all context and try to reduce everything to a single number.
And disagree with everyone who doesn’t completely agree with you.
no no no…the only thing that matters is Points Per Game given up by the defense
I am quite excited about the new season. The bitter taste of last season is almost gone, it sounds like there’s new energy and a chip on everyone’s shoulders to prove that last year was a different era.
I can’t remember who wrote it, but apparently the 2013 team was super lucky when it came to turnovers- apparently we recovered most of our fumbles, the interceptions didn’t result in points, etc. The article was suggesting that the 2014 team might not be as lucky…and we certainly weren’t. This isn’t to discount the many other things that contributed to last year’s disappointment…but hopefully we’ll have better luck this year too!
On a different note, I’d love to see more ideas people might have about how to defend these crazy spread offenses, especially Baylor’s and TCU’s. From some of the things I’ve read about Baylor’s offense, it’s a “pick-your-poison” offense that is structured to make in-game adjustments really easy, as there is a play to counter any defensive weaknesses. Now, since I’m not really an expert at all (I’m just a big fan), I was wondering if y’all more savvy people could help me understand if this is true, and how one might be able to defend these offenses. Thanks!
great DL play is key…if you can slow the run with your front you have a leg up
You sound like a Baylor coach (IT person) asking someone (hackers) to find a weakness in your system. Then you’ll take that information to stay ahead of the opponent. LOL!
good DL play and tackle well…is a great defensive formula
Controlling the line of scrimmage, keeps the LB clean to roam, creates pressure on the QB and then limits the amount of time the DBs have to hold coverage. It starts up front.
Yes sir! It all starts up front
LOL I definitely don’t want to give Baylor any edge! I just want to see us come out on the right side of the equation again like it should be.
I think that is a question everyone is trying to answer. Saban is opting for more speed and foregoing emphasis on size. I think the only way to slow it down is with speed to cover all that space.
Pressure on the QB is all it takes, disrupts lanes, and timing routes. Easier said than done of course.
This would go a long way. Generally, this is how we had so much success against Leach’s TT teams. Pressure, force short passes, tackle well.
I’ve said it often that I subscribe to buddy Ryan’s philosophy of attacking an offense to dictate the flow of the game. WVU did that to BU last year and beat their ass 41-27. That is what I want to see from us, an attacking D that pressures the QB. If that means blitz every down then so be it. Think ’85 Bears or even my ’97 Broncos. I still love Mike Shanahan for going over to Greg Robinson and telling him not to change anything and keep blitzing every down against Favre in the Super Bowl.
This. WVU’s D was in Petty’s head so much that he was overthrowing easy passes even when he didn’t have pressure. It was definitely fun to watch.
How do you fix a defense? Get a couple of these guys.
https://vine.co/v/ej2uA06DwaW/embed/simple
That could be an interesting designed play. “Fumble” it out to a receiver who’s expecting it. Not saying that I would do it in a Div. 1 game but it could work in a high school game.
I think Nebraska already used it. The ol “Fumblerooski”.
Yeah, It’s very similar to that for sure. Good call.
We used it to perfection in the ’87 Orange Bowl for a TD by Mark Hutson.
against Miami also
87 Orange Bowl v Miami. Correct sir.
This just in…Tennessee loses another DB to injury, Pig Howard has been suspended, two other recievers to have surgery and return date is unknown.
They have been hit really hard in the last few weeks.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/no-25-vols-lose-mcneil-injury-suspend-howard-173246514–ncaaf.html
The pig will just miss 1 game
“Pig” Howard? Oh yeah, this is Tennessee we’re talking about…haha
I’d prefer they have all their best players available so there are no excuses when we beat them down.
It’s the SEC, they will always have a million excuses.
They have an entire national network to make excuses for them. It’s not going to matter.
True. It doesnt matter what OU does on the field. Win or lose we’ve already lost this game in the media. We can blow them out on the scoreboard and ESPiN will somehow find a way to negate it.
Future ESPiN Headlines :
“Sooners Survive Tough Test in Upset of Tennessee 63-14”
“Alabama Dominate in 21-17 Blowout of Wisconsin”
I don’t wish injuries on anybody, but nobody felt sorry for OU when we’ve had major injuries and had to play big games. It’s part of the ebb and flow of football.
*cough* 2008 BCS championship *cough*
I think they are faking it. They started watching the game tape from last year and decided they didn’t want to play against Striker.
Is it me, or does Jim Harbaugh have the look of a serial killer sometimes?
Sometimes?
A little.
dahmer?
I have no idea.
That face will eat you. Chew your leg right off.
A serial killer in stylish khakis, haha
Other than “sometimes” yes
now that you mention it
He should definitely switch to decaf.
Or maybe switch from meth to ritalin
I think his meth supply is running thin, now that he’s had the falling out with Colin Cowherd.
Not sure what you mean.

I can definitely tell it’s football season. I just took the dogs out in the backyard to do their business, and at one of the houses across the alley has the garage facing the alley. The owner had the garahe door up and he has one of those small trailers with the 2′ walls around the front & sides, plus a tail gate. He’s made a cover for it to look like a Conestoga wagon, and of course, has OU Sooners painted on the side. I assume it’s a tailgating accessory.
I used to go to a lot of OU baseball games and there was a fellow who always showed up waaaaaaayyy early in the right field alleys. He converted a boat trailer and installed a picnic table and benches, with a grill on the back. But the centerpiece was the mast he erected that had flags of all Big 12 schools…sort of. The UT flag was upside down, and the other orange flag said “loSur”. It’s been several years since I last saw a baseball game but I hope that guy’s still out there every week. They always did a great job of heckling the opposing right fielder!
ghost of cecil samara
So Kansas currently has one more scholarship player than an FCS school. Quick question, has Charlie Weis made more money not coaching teams than he did coaching teams?
if I remember correctly, he made out like a bandit with, at least, nd and ku owing him a bundle…….perhaps trump was his agent
Nah. Had The Donald done the deal, you and would be paying for it through tax write offs and development grants.
Nonsense.
SORRY FOLKS. Having trouble with my keyboard or something if I type too quickly. Not like I have anything important to say but I was gonna mention how extreme the taxes and building codes are in Jersey and New York but Trump manages to get it done anyway. Contrast that with the fact that our government has been unable to provide a fully working website for healthcare all the way to this very day, despite more then 5 years and a billion dollars of our money! Trump PAYS billions in taxes, levies, dues and fees while they waste the billions from the people like him who actually get things done. I am on the side of small government every time and suggesting that a man didn’t pay enough of his OWN MONEY to the clowns running our government is ridiculous.
here
are
more
taxes
and
restrictions
on
building
in
Jersey
and
what really ticked me off about that story on ESPN was that the big 12 could’ve had Gus Malzahn!!
If I remember right he was lobbying for an assistants gig at OU after he left Arkansas.
He’s still getting pay checks from ND too
The buffets are happy, where ever he is now.
Like Weis had any more impact on the buffets than Mangino.
But Mangino won when he was there. My best friend is a huge KU fan and he talks about Mangino all the time. He would take him back in a heartbeat.
You wonder why Kansas can’t figure that out.
Because they only care about basketball.
I guess I have never understood that attitude. I can understand not wanting to pay top dollar for coaches in sports that don’t pay for themselves. However, football is usually the sport that pays for everything else. I would seem to make sense to try and make it at least competitive.
Amen brother! I’m right there with you!
Kansas may be calculating that they come out ahead paying lowball coaching wages, collecting league tv revenues and not going to bowl games. And relying on basketball to keep them from being dumped next realignment.
Mangino is a hell of a good football coach. Forget his physical appearance, he can flat coach.
You will get no argument from me!
He can fat coach! Kidding, kidding.
So…… No Open Post today? No Practice Notes? I’m so depressed. π
Rumor is OU is shutting down football b/c our defense gives up too many points per game. Sorry.
It’s the only stat that counts.
more than 0 ppg allowed is terrible, they probably should give up football
Sometimes there isn’t a Thursday Open Post and they save the updates for Friday.
Really interesting interview with Mike Stoops. Says good things about Dimon, Evans, Alexander Tapp, Jordan and others. On the down side sounds like we’re not deep at all at CB.
http://cdn.stationcaster.com/stations/wwls/media/mp3/Mike_Stoops_with_Al_8_26-1440636907.mp3
Yep, pretty thin at CB I’d imagine.
We have players just pups tho but highly regarded ones
Even Mike Gundy gets it.
“It’s completely opposite of what it should be defensively in
statistics,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. “It should be points
allowed per possession. Like our defense, when we were rolling
offensively here in those years, our defensive coaches and our team were
facing about 16 or 17 possessions a game. There’s teams in the league
and other leagues that only face 10, or 11 or 12 possessions, so
obviously they have a better chance to score points against us than they
do against them.”
http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/102568/perception-isnt-reality-for-big-12-defenses
Yeah. That’s the point that keeps getting missed. Were we awesome on d? No. But don’t start comparing to some team in another conference. That’s apples and horse apples. Put most any defense in this conference and over the course of the season every single one of em will give up a bunch of points every single week. And until you take humans out of the equation, perception seems to hand the “this is the way football should be played and every team is awesome” moniker on the sec. It keeps getting proven that they’re not the bees knees but everybody wants to give em numerous chances to have at least one team in the playoff
Exactly the way I see it. No one wants to talk about the fact that Auburn and A&M gives Bama fits.
Yep. Absolutely agree with you. Well said.
We should do this!
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/14/nfl-teams-pick-the-brain-of-high-school-coach-who-never-punts/
…maybe
Thats some crazy stuff
There was a good interview with him here: http://www.footballstudyhall.com/2015/8/18/9166647/no-punting-and-now-bringing-rugby-to-football-an-interview-with-coach
The interesting thing about this guy is not the particular plays he does, but that he actually looks at the statistics and sees what happens in real games. If everyone adopts his strategies, things will shift and the stats will change. Then the strategies may no longer work. But if you adapt his philosophy of adapting your system to the way things actually happen on the field, then that should provide some benefit.
I like that his philosophy is partly psychological. He has these unconventional methods and attacks, so when the opponent fails, they are utterly disheartened. You would be too, if your opponent kicked off and recovered the onside kick and score again 4 times in a row.
He also seems to think through the possible effects of his strategies. His opponents have to scheme around the possibility of his receiver run/pass options and laterals, so even if he only does it 4 times a game, he can exploit the defense they have set up against it.
The key issue is that he doesn’t follow the “rules” of football. He plays within the written rules, but he actually examines a lot of the assumptions that people have. A lot of maxims that everyone quotes about football are rules of thumb that go back to the ’50s. Some of them aren’t true anymore. Time of possession is one of those things people talk about a lot. But is it really true that you should focus on time of possession or is it just a byproduct of the fact that the more successful you are the more time you are likely to keep the ball?
https://twitter.com/KirkHerbstreit/status/636932717150629888
Dude deserves all the hate he gets these days. Guy can’t stop being another SEC talking head. So annoying.
You should check out his tweets from recent days, more unhinged Baylor fans misrepresenting what he said and hating on him.
He’s only been talking about non-SEC stuff because he’s been getting grilled so badly about his obsession and defending of the SEC. I never thought he was one of those dudes, but he’s become one.
I wouldn’t know, never watch any of their shows.
The baylor tweets were just as unhinged as the one’s I’ve seen here, on newspaper articles and numerous sports forums.
Sucks that he says OU makes the Playoff and wins the B12 this year
Hard to believe it has been 25 years.
Rest in peace, SRV.
https://youtu.be/FQ_DdgxRSak
Im a big SRV collector and fan
You’re thinking of Stevie Ray Vaughn. This here’s Steamy Ray Vaughn.
Weve lost some good ones this year gary moore bb bugs henderson
Used to see SRV every Monday night for $1 at the Rome Inn, before he got famous.
Bugs used to play at our high school dances when he was with a band out of Tyler “Mouse and the Traps.”
Mouse traps shuffle kings used to go see buggs dowtown dallas 40 years ago allways played barefoot another was johhny nitzinger band
seems you know football and music
I work with a guy, who’s younger brother would tell him that he needed to go listen to this guy play and maybe get him to play in his group. He did’nt want to give the skinny little kid the time of day. His little brother’s skinny little friend was SRV.
http://www.soonersports.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?id=4324799
Stephen Parker looks the part
So does Dimon.
The roster claims he lost weight, but he sure looks grown up and blown up to me.
Yep, I was thinking the same thing. He looks 280 lbs to me
So many of the players were showing lower weights, makes me wonder.
My high school coach always had our official roster sizes taken on the last day of two a days, just after running gassers after our last practice and without a water break. He wanted our lowest weights possible to go on the official roster and game programs, to make our opponents think we were lighter than we actually were.
They have Hulk McGinnis listed in the 250s, Kish mentioned he is too big right now to play LB pushing DT weight awhile back
Wouldn’t surprise me to see him at DE at some point. He played with his hand in the dirt in high school.
Yeah, if he keeps the weight up, he will play DE. Which is OK, especially if OU does get Caleb Kelly too, with Youngquist and DeBerry that’s an awesome 3 LB group and the depth is there to go back to a 4 man front
Exactly! Although I do subscribe to the notion that they may be emphasizing speed and endurance more out of our line this year as well, but those were probably weights taken when the young men were about as lean as they were going to get for this year.
That’s what I’m thinking, they were weighed without water weight being a factor.
I like this team to I just made a wager at 35 to 1 they win it all .
In Vegas?
If so I will call the FAM and have them place one for me. :-0

http://www.gifbin.com/bin/15g6454656.gif
That is awesome ET.
It’s an innernut classic and it never gets old. π
No sir.
I have a little tidbit. A couple of days ago there was footage of Lampkin at practice. Was told, the line was to basically go thud speed and no bullrush because Lampkin wasn’t in full pads. That obviously didn’t happen and Danley was caught off guard. The next day the OL didn’t take it easy on him and even took him to the ground a few times. Practice video is not allowed to be leaked at all by the players, he was talked to……that’s it π
Lol! I figured he would hear about that video being posted.
That is reassuring..I was like Damn! Lampkin is either a stud or Danley is a big disappointment… because of uncertainly with the OL we need all the help we can get in there
Exactly, Lampkin is definitely good, but it just made Danley look bad when that wasn’t the case.
LOL I am not surprised.
I already had some concerns about Lampkin’s maturity and ability to follow the rules, now this.
/hmmm
It is a concern. Some players are taking notice. I hope it’s only temporary though.
Hope they help him grow up.
A little to much ego from his recruitment?
No idea, but currently “that boy just ain’t right.”
Gotcha. Seen those types roll through the door before.
Unless things have changed completely from the way it used to work his teammates will take care of him showboating or trying to big dog them. He’s far from the only big strong guy on this teams offensive line!
Ego-loss is much less painful if it is acquired from within. π
Yep, experience is a great teacher, but the tuition is pretty high.
agree, hasn’t he displayed some showboat tendencies thru recruiting and one wonders about his ut experience
I don’t mind a little bit of that “attitude”. But it’s gotta be at the right level, at the right times. OU’s had some showboats in the past, and the OU coaches at the time, for the most part, kept it from being a distraction.
Thanks KJ and appreciate your insight. Interesting how that short clip got so many concerned over Danley’s technique and the OL in general. The thread got derailed after that. crazy.
I admit I was critical too, until I saw the clip when a poster put it up after it got deleted. And the first thing I thought was “Danley doesn’t really look like he’s trying” that’s when I posted a late comment about it yesterday.
I saw it and thought, something is going on. When I found out Lampkin posted it, made it even more suspicious.
De La Salle HS coming in to play Trinity this weekend. Good game?
You in irving K?
No Im not. I’ve seen De LaSalle play and only have heard about Trinity. I thought I read this is their first time playing so just wondering if it will be a good game.
Trinity is always stout they were my high school rivals ld bell don’t know anything about de la lots of nilas there in irving Polynesians and lots of em
That’s what I hear about Trinity, huge population out there. De La is not a very big team. But they’re VERY disciplined and pretty athletic. They run the ball a ton.
Prob no chance for dela but its football no telling
Hope they’ll have it on ESPN.
Just checked the Saturday night channel guide and the DLS vs Trinity game will be on espn2 at 8p.m. Central.
Thank you, ET
With Trinity replacing the HC and a boat load of starters the first game of the year will be the best time to play them.
didn’t know head coach replaced
Coach Linweaver was there a very long time, he is the one who built the program. Coach Jensen has been an assistant since 2000 and was important to their 3 state titles.
There will be a drop off early with all the players they are replacing, but by mid season and when district play starts I expect Trinity will be in the thick of the battle for district.
Trinity for 2015, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
First year coach(long time assistant), returning starters 3 on O, 2 on D from a 12-2 regional finalist.
Returning a 1800 yd rusher(22 TDs) and a dual threat QB(1400 yds rushing 19 total TDs).
Stud OU offer DT Chris Daniels (6’3″ 300) is a player to watch.
That’s pretty impressive. Oh I didn’t realize Daniels played there, he’s really good.
I have a bro’ crush on Chris Daniels.

TV?
Maybe ESPN but Im not sure.
I just checked the listing through early Saturday evening and can’t find it.
At 4p.m. Saturday on espn2 Arlington Martin vs Desoto will be on.
Desoto is the top ranked team in Texas 6A, Martin is #16.
About the only returning starter on Desoto’s offense that doesn’t run a 4.5 forty or lower is an OL that runs a 4.9.
WOW
They will be competing with last year’s South Oak Cliff team for D1 prospects, SOC had 13 in 2014.
Desoto has dual threat QB Tristen Wallace at 6’3″ 230lbs 4.5 forty.
Desoto also has a new coach, their OC is taking over after their coaching legend HC took a job at SMU.
He looks like a grown man.
http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/high-schools/headlines/20150820-1440112438-hsfootballbriefs_0811spo_5_45414215–2-.jpg.ece/ALTERNATES/w320/1440112438-HSFOOTBALLBRIEFS_0811SPO_5_45414215-(2).JPG
Plays like one, too.
Their offense was unstoppable last year before he got hurt.
We may see him play against us in 2017.
Check him out Saturday night, Desoto scores like a pinball machine.
Hopefully, he isn’t in love with his HS colors- looks like Baylor
i am going to watch desoto play on Saturday in Mansfield. will have to keep a lookout
EasTex when did Texas add 6A?
This past season(2014) was the first year for 6A.
Here is an excellent write up on this game at VYPE.

Anyone going to watch the mesquite Horn game tonight on TV? Sooner QB commit Chris Robison plays for Horn.
What channel?
Direct TV channel 674 its called ROOT sports southwest
Okay, thanks.
Don’t get ROOT.
Astros play on ROOT. I think it’s fox spin off.
Yep, don’t have it in Dallas. Maybe if I had dish, but doubt it. The mavericks and stRangers rule the roost with Fox up here.

ROOT! Now that’s awesome! π
Yeah I know. I’d never even heard of it until this afternoon when I checked the TV box.
That was the nickname given to me in 1991 at OU by my fraternity brothers. After school I joined the Army and one drunken night decided to get it tattooed on my right calf. Here I am today, 43 yrs old, with that on my leg. Oh, the insanity!
You could always change it to: “Money is the Root of all evil. Women need Roots.”
Saw that on a key chain a long time ago, when I was at AIT in the Army.
Or, “I am GROOT!”
Dr. Oot at your service.
LMAO. I’m definitely done w the ink. I’m like a Kentucky hoopster, one and done. I did AIT at Ft Jackson. You?
Ft. Benning, Ga. Sorry, got to do it. Relaxin’ Jackson. LOL
It was definitely that. I was a 71L, Pac Clerk. Basic at Ft Sill in the dead of winter was brutal but AIT in co-ed dorms was gravy!
Ft. Sill, been there.
Now, that is funny!!!!
Thanks for the heads up. I will be watching.
Tuned, thx
Thanks for the heads up
Thank you. Got it
Is he a 2017 commit?
I believe so.
I know so. π
He’s not a bad little QB needs to put some weight on imo. But definitely has the skills.
He has the frame and he is just a junior. Might even be a red shirt with Kendall coming in next year.
Very true. He’s got time to develope. He’ll just get better from here.
Darryl Dawkins passed away today. Chocolate Thunder will be missed.
Can you believe we are getting some love http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/102636/yes-kirk-herbstreit-is-picking-oklahoma-to-make-the-playoff
I’m sure all the Texsa fans, who’ve been talking about how bad we’ll be, are having a tough day because of Herbie.
Frankly, it surprised me too. Herbie is a homer for the Ohio connection and does love BS, though. I hope he is correct.
Scrimmage tomorrow. Should gets some notes from TFB. *cough *cough
Robison can put the ball on a dime. First game struggles a tad but also quite a few drops that should of been caught. But does have 3 TD passes.
300+ yards through the air 5 TDs 1 int.
Not bad for the first game of the season.
Not at all! With all the drop passes tonight I wouldn’t doubt he would of been close to 400 yards. His team did lose by 3 though.
Who did they play?
McKinney Boyd
Boyd is ranked #34 in the Dave Campbell rankings.
Six starters return on offense, 5 on defense.
They made it to the regionals last year before losing to Cedar Hill.
Horn may have just been over matched after losing 17 starters from last year.
See I didn’t know all that. They held their own then especially with how many starters were back for Boyd
You never mentioned the final score.
41-38 Boyd
