OU Football Practice Notes 8.6.15

Image via Soonersports.com

I’ve only got a few brief notes as of now, but I wanted to start a separate post (as opposed to adding these to the Open Post) in case I’m able to track down some additional information. If so, I’ll add them here, or include them to tomorrow’s Open Post.

Quarterbacks: I’m told that Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas took the most reps today. The source could not confirm whether this was due to the possibility that Baker Mayfield may still be trying to ease back into things coming off his shoulder issues from this summer. The good news is Mayfield did throw and my guess is that it is indeed just a process of easing him.

Linebackers: Didn’t get a full list of the linebackers running with the 1’s, but I was told Jordan Evans is running with the first team. Which is obviously significant since OU also has Dom Alexander and Frank Shannon as guys with considerable experience and there are, in theory, only two “true” starting LB spots available. Eric Striker, of course, ran with the 1’s as well.

Defensive Backs: Zack Sanchez and Jordan Thomas, as expected, ran primarily with the first team. However, I’m told Kahlil Haughton and PJ Mbanasor rotated in a significant amount. It sounds like of all the freshman in the secondary, those two rotated in the most today.

Defensive Line: Was told that Dwayne Orso ran with the 1’s at the 3-technique. This is important because it would seem to indicate that a) Orso is competing with Charles Walker and there should be depth at the position – or else they are trying to send a signal to Walker that he needs to step up his game and/or b) they are working on a single-gap alignment more akin to what Oklahoma used to run before the change to the 30-front. Keep in mind, that having a stand up LB/DE doesn’t necessarily mean you’re running 30-front alignment or principles.

practice notes coming thru in the clutch!

Saw a pic of J. Evans on the Facebook link. Looking more and like a true LB. Looks to have put on some good weight.

Seven letter word for TFB is AWESOME!!

  • Will Narramore says:

Does a 1 gap technique allow the DL to be more aggressive?

    • Super K says:

Depends on how they play it. Mike Stoops is a play the run first kinda guy so you’re prob never going to see OU go full Missouri hat in the crack type defense except on 3rd down.

Just when you thought it was a wrap for the day….BOOM! Practice notes.

    Aaaaahhhh, football season!

Evans and Shannon with Dom rotating in is solid depth at LB

  • Stephen says:

BOOM! Some basketball player from New Zealand, so I don’t know their area code.

  • Jason Vos says:

Again watch out for Cody Thomas

    • Zack says:

Not doubting your info at all, I would be good with whoever wins the job but if I had to bet I would bet on knight.

      • BleedCrimson says:

Most would have taken the bet that Bell was going to be our starter when TK took over. Who saw that one coming?

        • Zack says:

I would disagree only that I don’t think knight is considered the favorite to win the job. Bell was considered the favorite.

          • BleedCrimson says:

True. I wonder if taken a poll amongst fans, what the percentages are for each of the QB’s. My thoughts are that any of the current QB’s could be named starter and I would not be too surprised. I am curious who Riley believes has the most upside for the season.

          • Zack says:

I would guess most think mayfield will start just because that’s what everyone has been told. I listened to Murdock this morning acting like a dbag about “if knight is the starter” saying we all know what knight is. I don’t see how he owns ss and tries to rag on people the way he does.
He went on to say that the difference between what Boykin was able to do at tcu is that he went from a zone read to a spread offense. Then tried to explain that knight was not running a zone read scheme the last 2 years and is going to a spread this year.

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

The current QB battle is very similar to the battle between Bradford, Halzle, and Nichol. A LOT of people were all over Nichol. They developed all kinds of reasons why he would and should win. I think it’s the same thing for Mayfield.

Mayfield may be the best QB and the best for the offense. I’m simply noting that a lot of people are seemingly inventing reasons that just aren’t supported by evidence.

I’m with you. I care zero who the QB is. I want it to be the best QB. Then that person will get my full support because I want OU to win every friggin game ever.

          • Zack says:

Well and 2 years ago when bell was thought to be the starter after Landry, August rolled around and KT was getting the hype then he broke his foot.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I would have had Mayfield in front until his shoulder problem. Now I am not sure who would be the leader.
I am not familiar with the local talking heads. I do listen to the
franchise on occasion, but I have pretty much quit sports radio and
papers due to the fact that very few if any seem to have any integrity,
all about sensationalism. Since finding TFB about two years ago, I do not need any other source of information. If TFB ever closed shop, I would go into withdrawals and have to check into a clinic.

    • lulzer says:

No. I don’t care to watch the 4th string players now. Maybe later. .

    • Stephen says:

He did nothing with a big opportunity last year, I personally won’t expect much from him this year.

      • JD says:

So you don’t expect him to get better…come on now…this is his ideal offense and he was a redshirt fresh…I expect him to be a lot better than last year even without Riley and his offense…Im not counting him out just yet

        • Stephen says:

I’m not counting him completely out but it certainly felt like a downgrade once Knight got injured. Players can always improve but it would take a really big jump from last year to this year for him be ahead of Knight and Mayfield.

I get that it’s new offense and maybe a better offense for him specifically and that’s a fair point but I’m not going hold my breath on him or any QB. Whoever wins the job gets my support and I hope they make a lot of big plays. (-:

Edit: I also didn’t realize Cody Thomas was listed at 6’5 in HS.

          • JD says:

After seeing Boykin improve Im a believer that both TK and Thomas should be improved…Not sure about Baker on the drastic improvement since he played this offense at Tech but he should be improved just by maturation and playing against better competition in practice…Im with you (every sooner fan should be) on pulling for who ever the starter is…hoping all three are capable because we might need all three to keep this perfect season intact LOL

          • Finney56 says:

The thing I like about CT was that in HS, he ran a similar system and threw for over 7,000 yards in two seasons. One of his biggest advantages over BM and TK9 is his height. The other two are 6’3″ at best and he’s 6’5″. I’m definitely not counting him out, especially in a system where the OC isn’t making the QB reads (hopefully)

          • Stephen says:

The Boykin jump was special and you don’t see that happen a lot but he also had A LOT of help from his WR core. I mean would throw into double or triple coverage or throw an errant pass thats way off target and his guys would get it anyways. He is just at the right place at the right time.

          • JD says:

Yeah I envied how his wrs would go up and get the ball and wondered where the hunger was in our corp

  • Jason Vos says:

Hey K, do you know if Smallwood was able to practice today?

  • Randy says:

I will say it again.. Jordan Evans has a chance to be a All American this year.

    • KJ1123 says:

I like how Evans moved during the spring game, to me he really stood out.

      • Randy says:

He had a great spring game in ’14 as well. Then a good season (idk what they say on here I know what I seen). Now he is a true JR with a ton of experience, he will be Big Time this year.

  • thebigdroot says:

Decide to check the Brainiacs, just in case, and I shed a little tear. God bless you TFB.

  • Sarosh Nizami says:

Longtime reader/lurker and figured today would be a good day to become a 1st time poster, with the start of Fall Camp and after a 5 year wait (put my name on the list immediately after graduating OU Med haha) becoming a season ticket holder! Really enjoy the site and it has become my go to for Sooner related info. Posts are intelligent & insightful, as is the community commentary (for the most part haha). Looking forward to the season ahead!!!

  • rphokc says:

    is garnett available this fall

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Who were the first team recievers?

    • Zack says:

I think Neal was one of them. I think I saw him going against Sanchez.

    • Stephen says:

A lot of media guys assume its going to be Shep, Neal, and Westbrook but I just don’t know if that is functional. I mean look at last year with all of our starting WR’s at or just under 6′ tall, it wasn’t effective. This is actually a question that’s been weighing on me quite a bit b/c of the non-threatening WR core we had. I just don’t think he’s going to start Neal. I think he’s going to go with a big WR like Mead, Todd, Smallwood and rotate Neal in.

      • Zack says:

You may be right but if they start games in a 4 wide set I can see Neal being a starter along with Westbrook, shep and Andrews/mead.

Neal should have never been an outside receiver imo

  • Daryl says:

Zack you are correct. The rep they showed of him was against Sanchez and he shook him easily. I was glad only because I feel like he has real potential that we just have not seen him bring to field yet.

    • JD says:

IMO Neal looked real similar to Demarco in hs…he has no business on the outside but think he can be effective inside or in motion

      • Zack says:

He doesn’t belong outside. Him and shep are very similar body types but shep is a better athlete, or at least has shown to be the better athlete. Therefore shep can play all over and Neal IMO should be a slot receiver. I think Riley and the rest of the offensive coaches will notice that.
