Spring Game Observations

Image via OU Football Facebook

I’ll start by saying I initially had no plans to take in a second viewing of Saturday’s Red/White scrimmage. I went into the game with the mindset there would be very little, if anything, of substance to take away from the ‘game’ and I saw nothing that changed my mind but….

….I’m bored, home alone, and figured why not. So I’m just going to go through this thing ‘running diary’ style. I’m just going to hit play on the ol’ DVR and make some notes as we go, pretty informal.

You may wind up reading something you interpret as a definitive type of statement about a player, or players, and/or this team.

You didn’t.

I’m not forming any opinions — good, bad, or otherwise — based on what we saw Saturday. There are others who have attempted to do exactly that, despite lecturing you as fans not to do the same, and will likely continue to do so in the coming weeks and months. But I’m just not going to take a single practice, and a dumbed down one at that, and try to extrapolate that into a precursor as to what the 2015 season may or may not amount to.

So as long as we’re all on the same page, let’s do this thing.

Q1

* Pretty darn good showing from the crowd I thought.

* I want to believe Bob Stoops sending Cody Thomas out as the first QB to take the field was him trolling all of us as fans, but I’m reasonably confident he doesn’t even know what trolling is so….

* Devante Bond starting to look like the guy we all saw on his JUCO highlight tape. Captain Obvious says that is a good thing.

* Less than three minutes into the game and it’s obviously just one play, but 2nd team CBs on a 1st & 10 giving nearly a full eight yard cushion and even starting a backpedal at the snap. Words cannot describe how much I hate this.

* Trevor Knight misses a WIDE open Sterling Shepard streaking up the seam. Fair or not, it’s throws like that which linger with OU fans.

* This little throwback screen to Dede Westbrook is a great play call and perfectly executed. It looked like if he takes the angle towards the sideline, especially with his speed, rather than towards the middle of the field he scores easily. But as it were, Curtis Bolton makes a pretty nice effort play, avoids a half-hearted block attempt from a lineman way down field. and tackles Westbrook just before he can reach the end zone.

* Speaking of Bolton, I thought he looked great in pads. You can really see the good weight he has put on during that redshirt year.

* The 2nd & goal play where Mark Andrews drops a would-be touchdown. It’s just a little pick play with Andrews running a quick out. He’s pretty much wide open, no reason to have to rush the throw. But Knight guns it, and I do mean guns it, and you know what happens next. I feel like if he puts even the slightest amount of touch on that throw it’s an easy six points. Again, I’m not trying to speak for anyone else but it’s little things like that which frustrate you about Knight.

* I think the biggest thing working in Daniel Brooks’ favor is he’s clearly not like any of the other backs on OU’s roster. Only time will tell just how much they’re able to work him into the offense this season, but it sure looks like there should be some type of role for him.

* Dallis Todd just shook off an attempted Dakota Austin tackle like a lazy Sunday breeze.

* CBs have definitely moved up closer to the line, on some plays, but still not playing what I would call a true ‘press’ technique.

* That long completion to Andrews sure looked like a busted coverage to me. Credit Justice Hansen for putting the ball on the money, then Andrews did Tito Windham wrong dragging him down the field like that.

* Orlando Brown is an absolute monster. And you’re not supposed to be that nimble at that size. Wow.

2Q

* Knight’s INT is just a terrible decision with the football. Nice play on the ball by Ahmad Thomas mind you, but a foolish and unnecessary throw on the part of Knight.

* Jeffrey Mead is a bit of a freak. That is all.

* Hard to tell if it was a true busted coverage on the part of Steven Parker — who also slips a bit on the play only adding to things — allowing John Humphrey to be WIDE open, or if Ahmad Thomas was too slow in recognizing the route and getting over to the near side of the field in coverage. It did look like Parker bit on an underneath route, but again the call may have been designed for him to release Humphrey to the safety. And while had to make a cut to avoid Thomas, all I’ve heard about Humphrey is how he’s a low 4.3 guy but he just got caught from behind here.

* Pretty clear Cody Thomas did not see Tay Evans as he under throws a ball that really should have been an easy TD. Hatari Byrd did not have good coverage at all, but winds up the benefactor with an INT off the Evans tip.

* Much like Bolton, Tay Evans definitely looks the part.

* Neither first or second team d-line getting much of a push at all thus far.

* Me thinks Lincoln Riley is a fan of the shovel pass.

* Baker Mayfield’s first INT was VERY reminiscent of his Texas Tech days and one of the primary critiques from his time in Lubbock. There are three defenders to his one receiver and he literally just throws it up for grabs. Adding to the frustration of that decision with the ball is the WIDE OPEN receiver he has underneath on a simple stop route. Same side of the field, too. No reason he should have missed that guy other than tunnel vision.

* Dwayne Orso has one hell of a grip-and-rip move.

* Easily the best two throws I’ve seen to this point (4:36 remaining in the 2nd quarter) have come from Cody Thomas.

* BREAKING: Bob Stoops has a nice house.

* Man, Bolton just STUCK Alex Ross in the hole! That was impressive. Easily heard the pads pop on TV.

* Mayfield’s 2nd INT was both a bad decision and throw. Jordan Thomas was step-for-step with Todd on the play and Mayfield either didn’t have the arm to make this throw or put way too much air under the ball allowing for the easy pick off from Thomas. Plus, there was a deep safety (A.Thomas) on the play who could have also picked it off. In fact, going for the ball Thomas undercut Todd who came down hard on his left shoulder. Don’t believe he played for the remainder of the day as a result.

* I know everyone is super high on Austin ‘Legatron’ Seibert who will arrive on campus later this summer, but listening to Bob talk about Nick Hodgson I kind of have this feeling he’ll at least start the season as the No. 1 placekicker. Maybe the true freshman comes in and blows everyone away, but I feel like Stoops may prefer the idea of a fifth year senior versus a true freshman.

3Q

* It took all of two quarters for Bob to be ready for this thing to be done. If you had the under on your betting slip, you’re a winner. So, expect these next two quarters to go pretty quickly.

* “One of the reasons the linebackers have gotten so good over the last couple of years is the ILB coach Tim Kish.” Direct quote from the play-by-play guy, offered without comment.

* I really hope we see some true four-man fronts during the season. I’m not a huge fan of this three man front with a LB spun down they’re running a majority of the time in this one. Especially when you’re having a guy like Charles Tapper just stand his man up then read where the play is going. I’d really LOVE to see the coaches put him on the edge in a true four-man front and just let him get after the QB.

* It’s a shame it’s just now coming in his final season, but this offense is going to do a world of good things for Durron Neal.

* No clue what Marcus Green is looking at on this swing pass to Alex Ross out of the backfield that results in a TD. Green was initially lined up on the outside with Mead, who runs a very simple slant route clearing things out for Ross. That’s just bad defense.

* That said, throwing the ball to Ross, Samaje Perine, and/or Joe Mixon out in space will never, ever be a play call I’ll be upset with.

4Q

* Have I mentioned yet I’m a fan of Jeffrey Mead? Because I am.

* Lot of walk-ons getting action right now.

* Didn’t see any of it in this one and not surprising given how vanilla they were, but I’m definitely hoping there are some designed jump ball calls when you have guys like Andrews, Mead & Todd.

* The clock just went from 1:08 to 0:00 so, yeah, I think Bob is done with this.

And now, so are we.

Good to see – hear – Kish being complimented after taking so much flack last season from the fans. He’s a damn fine coach. I’m glad Bob hung with him.

  • evenyoudorn says:

    “methinks”

  • SoonerIndian says:

Being out of town during the spring game, I appreciate the observation.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

Hansen and Thomas looked like the best 2 QB’s on the roster. Andrews, Todd and Westbrook look like they are going to be a nightmare for opposing D’s. Daniel Brooks has had two spring games that made him look like a potential star, but we’ll probably never see him again…

    • ccmosaic says:

Why do people keep saying these things? If our old OC was here I could understand that kind of negative talk but how do you know Riley does not see how affective Brooks would be? Brooks is about the size of Whaley our number 1 recruit at running back.

    • J J says:

We think do much alike old friend

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Has anyone heard thoughts from recruits?

  • james babcock says:

I had to work yesterday so didn’t get to watch the game so i wondering where there any serious injuries in the game.

  • nicjams says:

I still think this is TK9’s team at this point. I get the sense that the other players, as well as Bobby, want him as their qb. Should be a good competition though. All 4 flashed some potential.

    • John Garner says:

Not so sure about Bob. I’m sure he admires TK and has a lot of affection for him but Bobby knows he has to win. The guy who can best do that is the guy who will line up behind Center.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I think the final say will come down to Riley not Bob on that. Whoever Riley thinks gives OU the best chance to win will be his pick.

    • hOUligan says:

Hope you are wrong on this. The players and coaches can have an affinity for a guy because he works hard and whatever else but you have to be objective in this. No preconceptions. The guy that can ‘get it done’ needs to be the guy lined up behind the center. And TK might have hit his ceiling with decision making and the ability to make the different types of throws. Cody and Hansen would appear to have more ‘upside’; younger and less experience. Mayfield…jury still out.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Not a chance. Looked like the same old Knight out there to me. One of the least accurate QB’s Bob has started at OU.

New offense. New OC. Gonna be a new QB.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Sounds about right. Heupel (2nd in Heisman), Hybl (57% inaccurate), White Heisman, Bomar, Thompson (60%) Bradford Heisman, Jones (set records), Knight (57% inaccurate) Mayfield?

  • Jeff says:

I’m scared that OU best QB is not even on campus yet

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Andrews has to catch that throw, i don’t care how hard it was thrown.. If you play football beyond 4th grade & you’re a receiver.. You should catch that.. It hit him right in the belly button..

  • Zack says:

As far as Humphrey I think his speed or 40 time is legit but I don’t think he will show that elite speed until he puts more time in the weight room. I see him as a younger version of westbrook but Dede has more strength since he’s 2 or 3 years older.

  • OceanDescender says:

The throw where knight missed Shepard was reminiscent of the agony-inducing misses between Paul Thompson and Travis Wilson during TCU ’05. But it was just a spring scrimmage, I’m ready to hear about who looks best during two a days. That will be what’s telling IMO.

    • J J says:

That’s what I saw in my eyes when TK over shot… It was so reminiscence of that tCU game

  • Sooner Ray says:

After watching it again, I really think Knight has peaked and he is what he is. Baker is accurate but a riverboat gambler that can win big or lose big. Hanson shows some upside and I’m just not sure about Cody yet. Dede is going to be Shep’s best friend and Mead and Andrews are going to clear things out for the run game. Any RB that can catch a pass is going to be huge in this offense.

Something I know for sure is we only seen a small sample of what Riley wants to do and the defense was handcuffed so I expect them to look better by September.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      This.

    • SCKSChief says:

Riverboat gamblers aren’t all bad. I know Romo makes Dallas fans nuts, but he makes a lot of great plays. Favre was decent for a while…LOL. To me, Mayfield has the stronger arm and far more confidence and I think those two things win the job. They will both make bad decisions and bad throws, but Mayfield has the right attitude for this offense, IMO. Until Riley gets “his guys” in at the QB position, I’m not expecting too much.

  • Ed Cotter says:

I liked the fact that the offense ran the ball a lot. With a fantastic group of RBs this only makes sense. Defenses will not be able to sell out on either the pass or the run, and the offense can just take what the defense gives them. Gonna be fun to watch. Also nice to see the receivers do well outside of a few drops.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I think that fans want a change at the qb spot. The fans and boosters wanted change in coaches and look what happened. I think this is Baker Mayfields race to lose. Only if he can limit his mistakes.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I agree. Unfortunately, we probably just don’t have a great group of QBs on staff.

I like Mayfield, he is possibly the best we have, but there is a reason he went from starter to 4th team at TT. I guess we saw some of that Saturday.

      • BoomerDave says:

Seriously? He went from starter to 4th team? I didn’t know hat?

        • JD says:

Not sure he went to 4th but he was passed by Webb and another guy…then the guy that wins the job last year was a true fresh if I remember correct

          • Joe Nowlin says:

No, he got hurt midway thru the year his freshman year. He left because Kinsberry wouldn’t give him a scholarship.

          • JD says:

I’m aware of what happened in december

          • J J says:

Also another QB came back from fall injury (brewer? The dude who went to VaTech) so it’s was Webb, Brewer/VTguy, Mahomes & then Mayfield.

        • J J says:

          Uh yes…..

          • BoomerDave says:

So….what you are saying is that he starts the first 7 games; gets hurt; gets replaced due to injury not performance and drops to 4th QB? Absolutely not true, bud.

          • J J says:

He started the first 7 games because of injuries to the QBs ahead of him… Brewer & another QB one in spring, one in 2 a days…

He struggled against higher competition, got hurt & when bowl season came he was down to 4th.

            That’s all true…

  • Boom says:

When Brooks plays, I see him being inserted in the second half like they did with Finch. Change of pace guy that’s explosive w/fresh legs. Not a lot of carries but could do some damage in the passing game.
QBs, lot of time between now and fall with intense pressure to see who steps up. Also, more evaluation time as well. Look forward to the competition.

    • Zack says:

Good point about brooks, they will have to find a way to play him I think and situational is fine with me. Finch though was a better player and a guy we were begging the coaches to play more.
I would look for him to get more touches on swing passes where he gets matched up on a LB

  • Sooner born, Sooner bred says:

Rained on us pretty much all the way from Tulsa to Oklahoma City. By the the time we reached Norman it turned out a beautiful day for football. Glad to see the crowd turnout and Sooner fans represent. Atmosphere was great, halftime show was excellent. Game was so very vanilla but that was to be expected. We’ve got some receivers now. Some passes that should have been caught, and some passes that shouldn’t have been caught, but were awesome catch’s. Mead looks like a future star. Brooks definitely deserves some touches at running back….he’s got some wiggle to go with that speed. Justice Hansen throws a good looking ball. The three interceptions by Knight and Mayfield should never have been thrown. Second on Mayfield was into a pretty substantial wind out of the south as Hodgson can attest with his kicks that direction. Hopefully enclosing the south end zone will take care of some of that wind. Defense had some great plays and our middle linebackers are looking the part. I agree with you Jordan, I don’t like the cushion given by our cornerbacks….but some good plays by our secondary none the less. Hodgson looked pretty good with his kicks. Lastly our offense should be able to put up some points, but while shootouts are fun to watch, I prefer shutdown in your face defense because that’s what wins championships! Great day at the University and to be a Sooner fan. Once again I have a feeling about this year. If we can get by Tennessee in Knoxville, and that’s a big ” if “, watch out BigXII here we come. Boomer Sooner and God bless The University of Oklahoma.

  • godman says:

Watching Perine catch the ball out of the backfield in the open field at a fast gallop made me wonder what his all purpose yards might look like this year in the new offense? After 1700 yards rushing as a true freshman, I got a little excited just imagining him cut loose on more than a few of those pass receptions with long yardage! Thinking perhaps 500 plus receiving and over 1500 rushing…It all really just depends on how all the personnel will be utilized. He is currently and curiously tied with Alabama’s Henry at 7th in the early Heisman odds. Can’t help but think that the wealth at the RB position will give the OC the luxury of being a bit more conservative in the passing game which may help who ever starts. Speaking of which, I am inclined to think the position is more wide open than ever considering the fact that with a strong running game, they can ill afford a risk/mistake making QB to kill drives.

  • Jason Vos says:

Daniel Brooks needs to get some time as a KR

  • James says:

Sounds like some of the youngs guys will play a lot this year.

  • JB says:

Same old Knight & Thomas. Mayfield and Hansen look promising though, but still improvement to be made.

  • JrsySooner says:

    Quick review
    Hansen will be our QB
    Knight is history
    receivers will be excellant
RB will be dominant thanks to good O line
    linebackers will be better
secondary will be suspect and cost us a few games thanks to ignorant coaching
D line will be good but not dominant
Bottom line Bob Stoops doesnt get it
it’s a shame when you respect someone as much as I respect him

  • JrsySooner says:

    PS
how does a suspect Nebraska team get 75 thousand people to show up for a scrimmage. …..

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Is there a list of the recruits that made the trip.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

I”m not too worried about TK’s bad throws; I believe his confidence is low right now, but that can change. I’m more worried about his ability to read. I’m not a BM fan, but he seemed to be quicker at reading yesterday. Hopefully TK can improve dramatically in that area before the fall.

  • soonermusic says:

I thought Mayfield and Knight looked like the best two qb’s on the field. I disagree with the assessments of Knight that he’s “done.” I only watched it once, and in Spanish at that, so I wasn’t distracted by the announcers since I only understood part of what they were saying, but I saw two of Trevor’s incompletions hit the receiver in the hands. Judging just by what I saw, given the similarity in the level of play, Trevor’s escapability may very well give him an edge.

I think both qb’s and probably three of the the four of them were “trying too hard,” with a fast rotation and confronted with only a few opportunities, first time in front of a crowd this year, it felt to me like most of the errors I saw came from pressing too much to make something happen, to make an impression.

Liked what I saw from Westbrook quite a bit. I can see exactly why Stoops went out and got him, barring injury, he might be the “missing link.”

Brooks looked really good, although, ahem, he did fumble, and the sheer level of talent and ability of the guys in front of him is gonna make it really difficult for him to get much playing time. But I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him get a few carries in the fall, and if he makes something happen, who knows.

Saw some good defensive plays, some nice coverage down the field, good hands on the interceptions…

As everyone has pointed out, it will be completely different in the fall. As we’ve seen, the substitution of even one great player for a pretty good one can make a huge difference in the balance and production of the team, let alone the whole raft of changes that will take place. But it sure was fun to see them out there!

  • Chris White says:

Gotta love Coach Bedenbaugh, any group of lineman he threw out there played well. Mead will be a beast by the time he’s a senior. I do hope the defensive schemes and play calling are a result of the spring game because like you said, I think we need four true D lineman and three linebackers. I like our Dline guys in a sprinter stance and take off the ball

  • SCKSChief says:

Only through the 1st quarter on the old DVR, but some promising things. Still not convinced Knight will ever be more than a serviceable backup (truth be told, maybe that’s all OU has at QB right now). Brooks is nice, but we’ve not yet seen Mixon. Andrews is a monster. The OL was really impressive. The defense makes me sad.

  • Randy says:

I will keep it simple. 4 things, 2 on each side of the ball with grades. These are what I Am looking at for OU to have a chance to win the Big 12.
    1. QB decisions – D
    2. Red Zone offense – C minus
    3. DL pressure (from the hand in dirt linemen) – C
    4. do we have a all american safety ? – B minus

    • MoJoOkie says:

      1. If we don’t have some serious improvement in QB play the other 3 don’t matter.
      2. With all due respect for Brooks and Ross, our two best backs didn’t really play.
      3. Not sure about a C for this, C- at best for me.
      4. Didn’t see all American safety work; but this was a pedestrian effort against questionable competition.

My deduction is that 1. QB is a D going into the Fall, it’s not going to be a very fun season. JMHO

      • Randy says:

        I agree on the QB.
Red zone offense is always sketchy on spread offenses (not from the 5 but from the 20 year line)
My initial though was C minus, I only watched the game once so I gave a C. But C minus is probably more in line with what I seen first glance. ( and I think it’s more of a talent issue more so than a scheme issue there).
I am encouraged by the safety play a lot of talent back there and Will Johnson could be that difference maker. ?

        • MoJoOkie says:

Yeah, I wasn’t totally disagreeing with your assessment. For the most part I just wanted to interject that if QB play doesn’t improve from Saturday on, nothing else will matter much. We’ll beat the teams we should and lose to the usual suspects.

          • Randy says:

Gotcha. Totally with you. . I think whoever the QB is he will have 3500 yds passing 30+ TDs he just cannot have 10+ ints.. and or multiple pick 6s..

  • BoomSoon says:

Here is my analysis on the QB Play:
    1) Mayfield. I am not as high as others about his play outside of the INTs. For a guy we have been told all spring is hands down the best he looked like the least talented of the 4 by a long shot on Saturday. His TD throw to Ross was nice and he threw a couple of strong out patterns but I don’t think most realize that a large chunk of his yards came on 2 shovel passes any of the QBs could have completed and an out pattern that was called a catch that would have been brought back in a live game after replay as the WR was out of bounds. I have seen people points to his yards being double that of the others but the type of plays that led to those yards should be taken into account as the others did not get the benefit of a bad call (albeit without replay to help) or shovel passes.
He does seem to be the most accurate of the 4 BUT his INTs not only were terrible reads but showed absolutely no arm strength deep as the ball floated forever. He also took a few sacks where he held the ball too long and I can’t help but wonder given his fumble problems at Tech if there would have been fumbles as well if he was allowed to be hit. Maybe my expectations were too high based on what we had heard but for a guy familiar with this system I actually thought he showed the least.
    2) Knight. Knight was ok on the day. He looks much bigger & faster to me and threw some absolute rockets (see completion to Mead). He is also by far the best runner/has the most escapability of the 4 QBs. With that being said, he did miss Shepard deep which was really bad and threw one ball behind Mead on a crossing pattern that called for more touch that he has to hit. I am not as concerned about the completion percentage though as he had a throw away, a deep ball to Andrews that should have been a PI and two passes that were dropped that contributed to a less than stellar completion %.
All in all I think Trevor showed a lot of what he has always shown which is big upside but can make bad throws/reads as well. The INT he threw was bad and like he did earlier in the game he should have just thrown that one away. Still it was not near as bad as the two Mayfield picks IMO and I like Knight more than Mayfield as of today given his potential to extend plays, be a threat in the run game and he has a much stronger arm… he just needs to learn every ball does not need to be a fastball. Also, in the Air Raid offense, things can bog down on the goal line like they did Saturday on multiple occasions (this happened against UF in the championship game as well years back). A mobile QB in the Air Raid can make all the difference in that situation and Knight is clearly the most mobile which we don’t get to really see in spring games…though man he looked fast on Saturday. If the coaches allow him to run I still like his upside knowing there are decent options behind him if he gets hurt given his history of that happening.
    3) Thomas was ok as well. His INT was not a terrible read at all and was the best INT on the day (if such a thing exists). The problem was the read was a tad late and the ball underthrown. Still, he led a few sustained drives and looked much better than what we saw in the fall. I do not believe he possesses the big play upside of the two above but overall I thought he had a decent day and easily the most “prototypical” nfl type on the roster.
    4) I actually think Justice did the most to help himself on the day. I think he will have to have more days like Saturday to get back in the race as he got way less reps AND I have heard he got no reps in the last scrimmage before the spring game. With that being said, he had a great pass to Andrews (I thought the best pass on the day)…was 5 for 5 and overall did what was asked of him. Not a bad job by the young gun but I think his lack of experience and the fact that he seems to fit the least into this offense will hurt him.
Overall the coaches are smart for letting this play out through the summer and early fall. From what I saw Saturday, no one is way ahead of the pack and I think some of the reports on Mayfield being just that were a little overblown. I know he mentioned the offense being simplified but it was simplified for all of them and all of them made mistakes that need improvement.
Still what I saw on Saturday was an offense with an identity that I think will be way more balanced than people realize based on what my source told me. The QB just has to get the ball in their playmakers’ hands and get out of the way. My money is still on Knight but man all Saturday did was tell me this thing is far from over.

    • J J says:

I have said the same things about Mayfield, since last spring & have gotten crucified at times. I think people misunderstand the situation with leaving tech. Assuming that TT must be very upset he’s gone since they blocked his transfer. Honestly with his “knowledge” of the air raid, he should look the best in practice, he’s had actual game time.
I thought Hansen was easily the most “upside” in his performance, plus he has the least amount if Heupeks inconsistency affecting him. Thomas in my mind, has all the tools & no reason to not give him the nod. Knight & Mayfield looked far worse than the younger guys. An Bob is gonna go with who he trusts to be the least bone headed. Knight appeared to be the one “pressing” & trying to “impress the fans” … Words I heard after the game in the media coverage
