Hmmm…. interesting assignments
inside WRs will include TEs, just fyi
that might say a lot
I was starting to worry about the exclusion of an official TE coaching title. I don’t mind tight ends being exclusively used in a flexed position, though.
Cale to inside wr’s is interesting… Can someone explain?
I’m thinking he’s being groomed to be a future OC. If Riley does well here, he’ll be a head coach soon.
I also hope that means Ross will be moving to slot with his size and speed which haven’t translated into being very effective as a RB.
Nope, this is why OU should have taken SoSo too!
Verbage isn’t always clear in job titles. If you look at the Riley offense, then you see that the RB play out of the slot a lot and are just required to catch a lot in general. So, I don’t really think that he’s being taken away from the RB as much as he’s moving to where the RB will be.
So is Gundy coaching the inside WR’s because the RB’s will be playing the slot a lot? That’s the only reason that move would make sense to me. But either way I have faith that Coach Stoops knows what he’s doing and will have this team back where they should be soon.
Most shocking move here to me is moving Gundy away from the position that he has kept elite and among the nation’s best for so long. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but I’ll trust in Bob first then ask questions if the experiment blows up hahaha
https://twitter.com/soonerdave25/status/564956344944295936
This is exactly how I feel. I would rather have Boulware move to inside wr and leave Gundy at RB. I really hope this does not mess up our recruiting of stud backs. This does explain why Gundy was recruiting WRs with Riley though.
That loud bang you all heard was my jaw hitting the floor up here in MT. I would have expected Boulware to simply take all inside WRs and TE/HB.
Who cares what he thinks. Doesn’t play here anymore nor did he when he was except v isu in mop up. There will always be critics anytime there is change. Not a big deal.
I guess by that logic no one should care what you think, or what I think b/c we didn’t play there either. And for however little he may have played, it was still more than you and I combined. So if the guy wants to offer up his opinion on this former position coach changing responsibilities, I think it’s relevant.
It’s not like he said it’s a stupid decision or bound to fail. Why is he not allowed to offer an opinion on the subject, but you (or anyone really, myself included) are?
Because a coach is a coach is a coach. You ever played or coached anything Jordan? No snarky reply needed just an answer for my curiosity. It’s not just numbers and titles. A lot more and a lot less go into it than you think. Some guys don’t need coaching, some guys you have to babysit so to speak. Some guys get lazy, some guys lack confidence. Sometimes all you gotta do is remind a guy he ain’t pretty to get him to catch a damn ball.
We didn’t lose Gundy, we have a guy with RB experience taking over a stout group. If it isn’t working in the Spring I’m sure things can be done about it in the Fall. Besides if no NC or at least playoff appearance is tied to the OU/Riley era Bob is gone too. So I think this move, and the other offseason moves are all about results now. This is it.
My reply wasn’t to you. I’m assuming the format of the comments here made that somewhat confusing, but maybe that wasn’t the case…
Good point. I just assumed he was being negative. That’s my m.o. if you haven’t noticed. Lol. After thinking about it, perhaps he was implying that he and Cale didn’t see eye to eye and he would have opportunity to play some had he stayed. Who knows?
Right on!
Boulware coached RB’s at Stanford before so…
I did not realize that. Maybe not a bad move after all. It is odd though when you have been so successful at getting good backs to come to OU with Gundy.
And TE production hasn’t been improved since Boulware’s arrival. Maybe this move is a better fit? I’m not worried about Cale moving from RB coach to WR coach. I remember when people thought he was an odd hire as RB coach at OU since he was a QB in HS and college…but I’d say he’s worked out well there.
I don’t know about the Gundy move…
It’s interesting but I think it’s more about getting cale a new assignment so he can be ready for the OC job in a few years. I believe he can coach QBs. He’s been a hell of a running back coach so this is a good move imo
Yeah, they definitely wouldn’t have made this move unless it was what Cale wanted.
I find the move puzzling like many on here but I do agree with you that if Cale didnt want to make this move it wouldnt have happened. Hopefully the powers that be know what theyre doing here cause Im at a loss.
I believe the same…Cale on board and it gets him a more varied resume’ for the future…it’s just such a shock. Hope I am banging a drum and exclaiming to the heavens….sheer genius…at season’s end.
After much contemplation on this matter ( 2 minutes ) I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe Bob just feels that Cale is a better coach than Boulware and that in Rileys offensive scheme the inside WRs/TEs duties will be more complex than the (inside)RBs. I’m probably wrong but at least that would make some sense.
Got my whiskey…keep convincing me…please
lol I’m still working on convincing myself.
cheers
Maybe grooming him for the HC position in a couple of years?
That’s possible too. How great would that be if mike stays at osu. That would be a great bedlam series
That is definitely perplexing…..a head scratcher….I tell ya!
Just terrible to move Gundy and Boulware, and it makes no sense. Just stupid!!!!
Quite the optimist.
Doesnt it make more sense to keep Gundy With RB’s and Jay Boulware with IR’s?
Verbage isn’t always clear in job titles. If you look at the Riley offense, then you’ll see that the RB play in the slot and just come out of the backfield in general. I don’t think that Gundy is being moved away from the RB as much as he’s being moved to where the RB will be.
I disagree.
expand.
If it was truly as you described, then why even bother to change his title?
Perine isn’t consistently lining up in the slot. Neither is Ross. Or Ford. The only RB on the roster that fits your description is Mixon (and maybe Daniel Brooks).
Gundy is the inside WRs coach b/c he’s going to coach the inside WRs & TEs.
I think it’s to have more success at those positions, Gundy is a proven commodity. What do you think Jordan?
Mr Negative
Next time finish reading the conversation for a change.
I read every post on thread. Thanks for scolding!
I guess I don’t know a lot of people that would appreciate being called something when it doesn’t apply. If you had ready the entire conversation, you’d know it had nothing to do w/ being negative. Now if you just wanted to post a little pic you thought was clever, then far be it from me to stop you. But disagreeing with someone it’s “being negative” and you insinuating as such with something asking ‘what’s wrong with you’ was, IMO, unnecessary and uncalled for, hence my response.
C’mon man, you can’t deny that’s a pretty funny picture.
Sure I can 🙂
Who is coaching TE’s
read below
Gundy
How about we let it play out before melting down
No choice but…you’ve got a guy that has recruited elite RBs, coached them up and put them in the nfl where they are All-Pro and you move him away from that? It smacks of what everyone fears most…loss of a strong run game and too much reliance upon the passing game.
I don’t think it’s going to be that drastic of a drop off.
no drop at all i’m bettin’
Don’t say ‘drop off’ to a guy on a ledge…LoL
Air Raid and running game…ala 2000 Q Griffin.
He’s still director of recruiting. He will be involved in everything.
Bingo.
This is the dumbest thing I have ever seen! Yeah bring a guy to coach the outside WR’s and one of your best coaches is a inside WR coach?
Gundy coaching IR’s/TE’s means we start landing more elite recruits in those positions 🙂
I’m just excited to see the offense this year. With an accurate quarterback the Air Raid is without a doubt just nasty as well all know. Unfortunately though, we don’t know if we have an accurate QB on the roster. That’s really the only problem that OU has on offense imo. WR play was down this year but with this Lincoln Riley offense and adding Dennis Simmons to your staff it should be a lot better.
How is an Assistant HC different than an Associate HC?
It isn’t, really. Just another title to build a resume and/or get you a pay bump.
….esco, are you an asst/asso- co-braniac in charge of keeping a lid on posters…..bump in bennies or the prestige?
Maybe 20 or 30 Grand?
Think the pain meds are messing with Bob.
Cale may have wanted this. He has been working with running backs for 16 years… he may need a change. If anything, it will help his resume and not pidgeon hole him as a RB coach only.
Not gonna sweat this one guys.
People assume Cale just got assigned this role unwillingly and forget before he was coaching backs he was a QB and might know somn about slant receivers. People also forget that Boulware has legitimate experience coaching backs in the FBS.
I like Cale’s (deserved) promotion …as long as we have both on the squad, I’m game
I know the move on offense is head scratching. But didn’t we demand changes??? I don’t know why anyone would be upset.
Yes you do 😉
Changes…YES…but …. shocking, unforeseen changes …. gonna need a whiskey and think about this. LoL
Gundy is one of our best coaches. I like that they are giving him a chance to teach a new position group.
That he is and am sure he will do a bang-up job. Just never saw this coming. 2nd whiskey…heart rate stabilizing…
Wuuutt?!? Head scratcher indeed! But…lets see what floats…
Lol people freaking out over something that is not exactly uncommon in the coaching profession. Love having an ILB and an OLB coach in the 3-4 defense. I also prefer 2 coaches in the secondary but I believe Coach Bob will be very heavily involved in the back end. Moving offensive coaches around doesn’t bother me at all. Maybe the receivers need more attention than the very talented backfield so the strongest coach was put where he could help the most. People need to stop acting like they are in the room and know better than the people that are!
I wish I could like this post three or four times. Common sense is not found very often on football boards.
Agree besides its way better for CG’s career.
Yep. There was a time that people (the ones that followed this kind of stuff) kinda scratched their heads when Gundy was named RB coach. It’s not like he ever played the position. He’s still our head recruiter, and that’s what really matters. I trust he’ll be a great IWR coach and the talent we have at RB, along with Boulware having coached the position, will take care of the production from that position.
Cale Gundy not with RB’S ??????????
Not going to read the meltdown nonsense.. But the Gundy move is interesting & also probably needed for his career advancement.. If he ever wants to be an OC or HC.. He needed to coach another position.. I think these moves were necessary & they seem to be well thought out.. Bob has been working on this for a while.. I’m all for it! #Boomer
Just me but with the Sooners having played for 4 national championships and won 7 conference championships between 2000-10 I think Gundy could have been an OC or HC at a smaller school a decade ago. I see Gundy content to make his $350K annually, doing a job he loves, working for a head coach he respects and raising his family in a community he has lived virtually his entire adult life.
From the outside looking in Gundy has never manifested attributes of an individual seeking to advance his career opportunities. Choosing instead to do a good job at a great work environment for top money.
…wonder what the backs we have now think………….they came here in large degree due to gundy……
And when you get here you need to be for that LOGO OU on the helmet not the coach. The backs will be just fine.
It’s not like he’s leaving…..and the RB’s may be very involved with the passing game.
Welp…hope it works out. Not so much worried about the Gundy move but how Kish is still on this staff is beyond me. Guess we’ll see.
you know Jay did coach RBs at Stanford, Arizona and Iowa State…..
Not only this, but it’s not exactly like Gundy isn’t available for advice…
He have any good RBs while he coached there?
I’ll take the answer off the air, thanks.
Mike Bell Arizona.
I’m not going to be upset about this coaching change one bit. Bob knows that the receivers have been slow to develop and if he thinks Cale is the one that can bring production from that group….I’m all in. I was always curious why Cale was ever given the RB coaching job to begin with, seems more natural for someone with his background to be with QB’s or receivers. He’s had a nice run but getting a productive running back shouldn’t be terribly hard…..Hell, this is OU!
I like it. Of course multiple meltdowns on here. Jordan being the ringleader. Obviously this is something Gundy is on board with. Really whats the big deal?
yeah buddy. turn up the heat. i love it. 🙂
I’ll tell you whos turnin up the heat is Buddy.
nice three to end the half
Sweet action on the flagship ESPN station right now.
That was a nice run to even things at the half.
As hot as ISU was shooting early, I am impressed we were able to get back to a tie for the half… We are going to light them up second half
Yeah we’re playing basketball well tonight.
What’s your favorite color?
Listen here buddy, my favorite color is red hot rejection at the rim, fire balls from long range.
What a crazy color! I love all colors!
Toats, I feel like you are talking to me from a McDonalds ball pit right now.
Busted! Except it’s a Burger King ball pit…
I really like crimson.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the move wasn’t Cale’s idea to begin with.
wouldn’t surprise me either. maybe its to progress cale’s career, maybe not. i think it could as simple as “hey we can be good with boulware at rb’s and i’ll take inside wrs to give us a hand in that position that struggled”
That and the TE will be more involved than it has in a long time.
i think you could be right on the usage. could make sense either way on blocking type stuff.
1.rb’s, fb’s/hb’s, and te’s and 2. iwr’s; or
1. iwr’s, fb’s/hb’s, and te’s and 2. rb’s
either way i’m excited
I think it depends on what you mean by involved. The TE in this system becomes an inside receiver more often than not. In other words, you don’t generally see a Jermaine Gresham in this offense. We actually utilized the TE a ton this year but more in the traditional TE, pro-style run blocking role.
Gresham was at his best in the slot or stretched out. But yeah I meant in the passing game.
We hate change…
It just wasn’t the ‘change’ we expected. I’ve still got my ‘keep your change’ bumper sticker on my car.
Peel it off and send it to Bob…I don’t think he knows…
Along with my 2 cents?
rim shot
LOL!
Lmao. No kidding.
A RB’s job is to read the holes and run the ball. (Obviously more to coaching the position) but 16 years as a position coach wasn’t going to get Cale anywhere. He needed to change in order to help this team. Not only the defense but now every position will have a new face at Spring practice to boost intensity. Point is, as long as we have Bedenbaugh coaching the O-line, we will continue to have successful RB’s
Nice delivery, good point.
At this point I think that Cale should be the Head coach RB coach WR coach QB coach and OC. Bedenbaugh should be the co HC offensive line coach TE coach. Monty should be the Co Co Head coach DC DL coach LB coach and DB coach …and head recruiter. Fire the rest of them and put the money saved into a new weight room.
I am excited to Coach Gundy as the Director of Recruiting. It seems like a great idea to have one of your best recruiters more involved in recruiting. I think this move to more involve Gundy in recruiting can be a great move.
He has been the recruiting director for a while now I believe.
Thanks, Sooner Ray. I didn’t know he was already in that job. I think it is a great job for him and for the program.
Been traveling so have been out of the loop but props to Brandon, Jordan and Alex for being on top of this. Can’t say that I would have kept these coaches, perhaps more so because I believe there are guys out there that can better meet the OU standard. But since this was the decision made I’ll support it for and give them a chance to right the ship.
You’re not going to fit in here very well rookie poster! 🙂
WB K and out of curiosity which coaches wouldnt you have kept ( Im assuming Kish and Mike ) ?
Why do I feel like Dad just walked into the house and we’re all caught red-handed misbehaving. LoL They’ve done great!!!
Good to hear from you, K! Hope everything outside the greatest country on earth is good!
Agreed. Great job on the story.
Not so much on the “reorganization” of the coaching staff. Still looks to me like friends and family are more important to Bob than the OU standard.
At this rate in 2 years Cale will be coaching all WRs and in 4 years he’ll be the Longhorns WR coach. Im not sure that I like where this is going.
I think his mother has a one orange son limit.
we can only pray thats the case
I do not understand why Gundy would have been moved from RB coach. It’s baffling.
Ask Cale. He loves the move.
I’m both excited and dumbfounded by the Cale Gundy move.
My guess is that Bob/Lincoln decided they no longer need a dedicated TE coach in the new air raid offense given that air raid typically does not utilize TEs in the traditional sense, so they needed to reshuffle the staff, and it made more sense to put Boulware in charge of RBs than it did WRs given his previous coaching experience.
I think as a former Quarterback Gundy will be able to teach the receivers what is expected of them! I hope Boulevard can keep the RBs at the high level of play that Gundy had
Is it just me or does anyone else get the feeling that we’ve assembled a juggernaut as far as aquiring a group of coaches who can recruit. KILLS me that we only have 17 – 20 spots to fill because I think this staff could light it up big time this year.
Quality.
Very agreed. Cale and Monty were killing it. Cale and Hot Rod were the dynamic duo in the Caprice. Boulware has had some success and some of these kids like Kish. Simmons and Cooks have great reps as recruiters. Excited to start turning these guys loose.
Good new hires, but there are a couple of rotting apples still there. Look for co-DC, ILB coach, and HC to be on the links while the other dynamos are building the next great run for the Nation. It will be telling if HCBS goes full-tard Mack on us or finds his Big Game self again – that’s what I’m waiting to see.
Yeah. Given the neglect that brought the program to this point, I’m going to have to see proof before I’m willing to just blindly celebrate a bunch of hires that, frankly, should be the baseline for qualifications to coach at OU.
I know a guy that knows Cales 3rd cousin on his mothers sides uncle, and he told my friends co-workers. ..coworker that Cale is good with the move. Fwiw, just thought I would share.
Good to know.
It comes from good sources!
Yeah thats great news..thanks for the inside info Boomer4!
Anytime! This guy is right all the time 60% of the time.
His initials wouldn’t be DB would they? It was that % thing that gave it away.
Lol! I would never name my sources….that would be improfessional.
No cause if it was DB he’d be right 92% of the time and only wrong 96.22% of the time
This is the type of stuff that you can’t get anywhere else! Thanks, Boomer!
Knew you would appreciate it Toats.
He normally keeps that stuff behind his pay wall.
My great-step-neph-aunt heard the exact same thing.
question……why does there need to be a different coach for outside and inside receivers
In the AR offense that’s normal because both groups learn different techniques and aren’t interchangeable with the outside receivers. It was going to happen, but shocked they moved Gundy to do it.
I’ll admit I’m not sold on moving Gundy, arguably one of the top RB coaches in the country, to IWR, but I’ll admit everything else could be good. I do like naming Gundy as Asst. HC though. LB recruiting may have just got a shot of ghost peppers in it though. lol
No TE coach? Would they be grouped in w/WRs, or OL…?
Considered as in inside receiver.
Gundy coaching TE’s as well
Brainiacs right on the money in the new coaching assignments.
Yessir! Called it.
Looks like those road trips with Lincoln really inspired Cale to make a move..I’m sure they talked about the offense in length…these moves overall will make our team better…people can grumble about this guy and this guy suck and should be gone but I think the group is really gonna be better and put our talent in position to do what we do at OU…we should never be counted out and I’m sure all of the coaches are happy with the way thing look moving forward…and that’s what the fans should do…move forward
Well said!
BOOM Thank you.
good post
My hope is they are working on an offense that no one has seen that interchanges some of the inside receivers and running backs so that there’s no way a defense can predict where the ball is going or how it will get there.
Ace.
me likey!
Cale might just push for a little Mixon…is that what your saying…I can live with that…as for the offense, I think it’ll be hard to defend…no doubt with the options we should have as far as OWRs IWRS RBS and FBSHBS…there’s plenty of wolves to feed the pigskin
Soooo many options. If you have H/TE’s that can suddenly split out and RB’s that are capable of playing a slot receiver, how are you gonna know for sure which defensive package to use.
Lol calm down
Interesting, maybe Gundy ends up being the successor at OU. Never know and I think moving him to IWR is awesome. I’ve read all the meltdowns, however I trust what Bob is doing. OU will always get great RBs due to their past and having a good recruiting coordinator. Love breaking up with IWR/OWR & ILB/OLB. This will help speed up the learning curve as these positions use different techniques which are hard to teach as a group.
Bob will be involved or oversee the DBs but you know Cooks has to be licking his chops with the young talent he has. I trust he will mold them into a special group.
Change is always hard for some but I think Bob just hit the reboot button. It’s now refreshed and feel there will be a new energy coming out of Norman we haven’t seen in a while. You don’t think these coaches are competitive? You think they want Monty to get all the recruiting awards? Watch how they will compete on the recruiting trail. Good stuff..
16 years Gundy has been with Stoops, 16 straight. Good point.
Nobody bleeds crimson as much as Gundy..he’s turnt down bigger jobs and is climbing the ladder at home
I could get on board with him being the unspoken, informal ‘CinW’.
I am looking forward to video game type numbers from this offense and defense this year….
I might be overly optimistic but Im thinking 72 points per game
I may be unrealistic, but I am thinking that the D is going to complement the offense and give a lot more scoring opportunities
ok lets not get carried away
After watching some of the film of the DB’s coming in… I expect great things from them
I wholeheartedly concur……….Im ‘cited
It that offense or defense? Just askin’..
both lol
I’m just looking for a rhythm or flow.
Like I said earlier, I’m both excited and dumbfounded by this. Dumbfounded because of the timing (why wait till now to announce this, assuming they made the decision weeks ago) but I also understand if he was going to make a position change, it would be at a time of stability at RB which is now.
Understand but think about it, Gundy will have more responsibility than what he’s doing today. I also feel he will be involved more in the game planning and be Riley’s right hand man on the sideline. I think it’s smart and and push Gundy to higher heights.
yeah I doubt Cale would have signed off on the move if he wasn’t interested…he went on the road w Lincoln…He will have more responsibility with his new position and prob gets a raise to boot
wonder how hard he’s lobbying to get Shep back to the slot?
I’m sure that move has already been made
Bingo!
think it will come down to a domino game?
If Shep is not back in the slot, then you can probably bet that some of those long OWR’s are busts
Pretty much. Shepard wanted to play OWR. Any NFL future he might have, however, is on the inside.
Now that guys like Dallis Todd and the like are making noise and getting experience, it’s time for Shepard to move back inside.
I like the move, just thought it was weird timing. Should of had Cale at the presser to talk about it, IMO.
Its official. We’re all junkies
Nah, not me I can quit at anytime.
/s
To me after much thought, all these coaches at one time coached different positions on various levels. Good coaches will find ways to coach the positions. They all started somewhere and it will be interesting to see how they develop what they have. Coach Stoops has my attention and will be interesting to see what goes on during the spring.
Spring game will certainly be interesting. Be there – the Nation needs to show up.
Boomer Sooner!!! Buddy Love and guys are getting it going!
Thomas was dyn-o-mite last night.
I have to believe that with Riley and Gundy spending so much time on the recruiting trail together, many discussions were had about what their wish lists consisted of vs what OU has in the cupboard. And, I’m sure that through these conversations, they both felt that this coaching move for Gundy would be a beneficial one. I think these guys know what they’re doing and am excited to see the new product on the field.
I like your style, dude.
Well thank ya, thank ya very much!
Is that Charles Bronson in your avatar? Once upon a time in the West. Great movie.
Yes, you nailed it- best Western ever made IMO.
That’s one of many on my list. It’s hard for me not to have Clint Eastwood’s Western first on my list. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly had one of the best gunfight scenes ever.
Just something about the particular style of this film and the cast which was superb along with Ennio Morricone’s score… hard to beat.
Just watched it again a few days ago. That is one classic that never gets old.
Exactly what I was thinking, all the time Gundy and Riley spent together on the recruiting trail was beneficial in more ways than one.
https://twitter.com/OU_Football/status/564979346847174658
And right on que, there’s the ‘dynamic duo’… Cale ‘Inside Man’ Gundy and his sidekick, Hot Rod Riley.
Yeah, Cayle and Linc are joined at the hip
Huge second half for the Sooners MBB… I love this team
They look like they’re putting it all together at the right time could make a good run in March
The only thing that I would like to see more of, is bench play… gotta keep those guys fresh
I think I saw somewhere the other day that OU’s starting 5 have logged more minutes than any team in the Big 12. I think that will change starting next year, they just don’t have the depth yet
Big, Big win here.
We just took 2nd place in Big XII
I absolutely love what Joe C has done in his hiring of Coaches… Number 1 in mens and womens gymnastics, Men and Womens BB looking great, Softball is in the top 5, Baseball looking like they could have a shot at going to Omaha. What a great time to be a Sooner
I was just having similar thoughts.
Very realistic shot at 3 NC’s in mens and womens Gymnastics and Softball. The freshman pitcher Paige Parker is a Ricketts 2.0 I have heard she has hit 75mph with movement… That is the fastest I have heard of in softball.
She’s goooooodddd… A perfect game, in a tournament after thousands of miles of travel….
Yes, very impressive. I watched the games on the Hawaii feed. The girl is for real
my son goes to Arizona St and is a sports journalism major and will actually be calling the ASU /OU womens softball game this weeknend on online radio. He attends ASU but will be rooting for the Sooners ( I have him well trained ). Im excited…hope he doesnt screw up though and cheers when OU scores.
You nailed it. Girl’s SB looks strong. We have 2 Preseason AA’s, great defense and bats, and the pitching to go with it. You’re right about Paige being Ricketts 2.0. Maybe better. She can throw some heat. I’m real excited about OU sports.
She isn’t 75..not close..we played against her team (originals) last summer, she is about 63/66 with excellent movement..excellent pitcher though
Tennis
I knew I was forgetting something… lol Mens #2, not sure about the womens
Havent heard anything on baseball.
We have some really strong pitchers this year… 3 guys that are burners, not sure about the others, or the bullpen
I hope so bc pitching and defense was pretty bad last year.
BOOM! Couldn’t agree more!
Should make for an interesting spring this year.
I’m not sure that the coaching assignments are as clear cut a division of labor at OU as they might be elsewhere. For example, Boulware was the “special teams coach” last year, and yet, when he spoke about the blocked field goal/extra point plays, he completely credited BJW for coaching that unit. I don’t know how much cross-involvement there will be, but I have heard Stoops speak of it before in the past.
My best guess, probably because it’s in line with my interpretation of a lot of what’s been happening, is that the Gundy move is an additional effort to “fix” the wide receiver issues by putting his top guy on it (along with the new guy). From what I’ve seen, when Bob has been displeased with an aspect of the team and felt it in need of serious attention, from lack of ‘team first’ attitudes and entitlement issues, to problems with the kicking game, to lack of depth at running back, and so on, he has dealt with it in a determined fashion. This seems like no exception.
(edit: btw, TE has been something of an area of concern for a while as well, I think…)
First reaction, don’t like Gundy move at all.
It’s so hard to think of changing that incredibly constant position, reliable forever.
Other side thinks OU has been strong there forever, so I chill.
What am I thinking?, still don’t like it.
Hoping for best though, recruiting will be interesting.
Just imagine if he can bring in the same quality receivers equal to the quality of running backs.
What is interesting though is that recruiting looks like a team effort which is a good sign. If I’m not mistaken Antoine Stephens has given a lot of credit to boulware for his recruitment. Obviously boulware isn’t going to be his position coach so I think it’s great that the coaches are helping land talent for other position coaches.
Same thing with riley and gundy going out and getting miller and dahu, which now makes it look like the plan all along was to move gundy
I don’t understand splitting up inside receivers and outside receivers. I think our route trees have been way to simple and we’ve not had enough crossing, pick, and drag routes… with receivers playing off each other’s routes. That’s why our receivers seem to always have a defender right on them and often times no one gets open… as opposed to other offenses getting guys running wide open against OUr defense. I’d rather see Dennis Simmons coach ALL the receivers and they operate as a cohesive unit. Also, no one listed as the Tight Ends coach… I guess they are “inside receivers” now?
Even Washington state, ECU had two WR coaches. aTm, Tech, TCU all have two WR coaches. The techniques and development is different between smaller slot and bigger wide outs. Calvin Johnson and Sterling Shepard will learn the same route tree and offense but not the same moves to get separation and pre snap reads. Also Cale is TE coach. They are synonymous with slot receivers because that’s where they line up
Short of Bob telling Kish “you have exactly one season to get it together”, reducing his role to two positions pretty much tells you where he stands.
I realize that having an ILB coach isn’t new, but when you were previously in charge of all the LBs, and that’s the only positions you are responsible for, that’s saying something…and it’s not something positive. Maybe lighting a fire under him will help.
I’m not aware of Bob being unhappy with Kish’s job…I mean looking at the coaching changes maybe he’s upset with Cale’s rb coaching and moved him to iwr…ya know…this is just a fan myth
Maybe, Boulware is on the radar? Moving Cayle to an area of weakness (TE’s) and handing Boulware arguably the deepest and most talented group on the team?
Im looking at it differently. As I see it Boulware and Gundy will be sharing the coaching of the RBs as the RBs will be used a lot more in the inside passing game, and its not as if Cale can’t still help out on the pure rushing aspect as well if needed. Its almost as if we’re now getting 3 coaches for the price of two.
In this order of assignments, there are no TE’s unless they’ve been lumped under RB’s. The area of weakness on offense is the WR’s.
I think more than anything it’s the fact that IWRs will have a bigger role in this offense and Cale’s prob the better guy for the job..I think all of these moves gives us the best possible chance moving forward
Agreed but I don’t think it’s uncommon for 3-4 defenses to have inside/outside LB coaches.
He’s also lost the title of “assistant defensive coordinator.”
But who is the assistant to the regional manager??!!??
Maybe it is just me but IMO moving Gundy to IWR coach makes perfect sense in this offense. A lot of the “run rame” plays in this offense are Quick tosses WR screens to Slot guys, Shovel passes and etc. I think as has been mentioned as long as Coach B is here and putting a quality OL on the feild we will be able to run the conventinal running game plays power, traps and such but putting a Ol’ QB in there to teach these IWR how to read these defenses makes good senseespecially on these inside option routes that seem to be a staple of the offense!
Sooners MBB # Take F’n Notice! Indeed. Well played!! Proud fan right now!!
Yeah. Great game. Great comeback. If Coach K isn’t B12 COY I don’t know who is.
Self. It’s ALWAYS Self. “He won with so many freshmen…yada, yada, blah.”
I half-expected for Perine to be named player/coach of RBs..
