The Path to Norman

Nigel Smith was part of an excellent 2024 defensive line class for the Sooners. A football and basketball player out of Texas, Smith was a top-200 recruit with several dozen offers. He came to Norman several times to scope out the terrain, where Coach Bates and Coach Chavis prioritized the big man. As the 2023 season kicked off, Smith committed to the Sooners over A&M, Ohio State, Texas, Georgia, and plenty more.

Career so Far

Smith took a redshirt season in 2024, playing in just one game.

In 2025, Smith played in three games in a reserve role on the defensive line.

Highlights

This Season

This year’s interior defensive line will be led by David Stone and Jayden Jackson; it will be one of OU’s strongest units and should be one of the best in the country. Smith and Trent Wilson have been the primary players working behind the starters and saw plenty of action in the spring. Tank Carrington and Bishop Thomas will also factor in at tackle, but look for Nigel Smith to step into a much larger role this fall.
