The Path to Norman
John Mateer played high school football in Texas, where he was a four-year starter and had a prolific career. He went to Washington State out of high school, where he spent three seasons. Following the 2024 season and the whirlwind of activity with Washington State, Mateer entered the portal. He was one of the most sought-after players on the market, but the Sooners and newly-joined OC Ben Arbuckle were able to land the QB.

Highlights
This Season
Mateer was one of the biggest names in the transfer portal and already has sky-high expectations. The offseason has done nothing to slow the hype, as he’s been a fan favorite and extremely plugged into all things Sooners. He’ll take over the starting quarterback job this fall, with Mike Hawkins as his backup. Mateer has been nothing but money so far; Sooner fans are betting he’s in for a banner season.
