Kareem Orr: OU picked up a DB commit in Antoine Stephens this weekend, so we figured it would be a good time to catch up with a recent OU target/visitor, Kareem Orr. He took a trip to Arizona State over the weekend and it’s pretty clear he not only had a good trip, but also that something happened to remove OU from consideration, at least at the moment.
One of our partners spoke to Kareem only 3-4 days ago, and it seemed as if the Sooners were leading. When we spoke to him yesterday, however, he said OU was not in a strong position with Orr any longer. He said the schools that currently lead are Arizona State, Ohio State, Georgia & Miss. State. Orr said that he will visit Miss. State next weekend followed by a trip to either Athens or Columbus the weekend after.
We didn’t get into what has turned him off to the Sooners or whether things are still salvageable. We will likely find out soon enough but according to partner, this is where things stand at the moment.
Van Jefferson: We exchanged a few texts with the 2015 WR over the weekend, but haven’t spoken to him on the phone just yet. We hope to later today. Jefferson did say the trip went well, but didn’t offer any specifics beyond that.
DaiShon Neal: In talking to some sources around Oklahoma, we get the impression the visit with Neal went very well. DaiShon’s mother and stepfather visited with him and we were told, “his parents want him here, but he wants to take more visits.” Neal will take a couple more trips before he decides, including a trip up to Oregon next weekend.
Nate Dalton: Earlier today 2015 DB Nate Dalton tweeted out his Top 4 and the Sooners did not make the cut. With Nate and Kareem both eliminating OU, at least at the moment, it may simply be a numbers issue for OU. Be it between having some other DB commits they’re high on and/or the number of current DBs on the roster, that are leading prospects to look elsewhere.
Neville Gallimore: Coaches are out on visits today and we’ve been told that Jerry Montgomery was in Canada yesterday to visit OU DL commit, Neville Gallimore.
Dwaine Thomas: Many of you probably saw that OU target (though he did not hold an offer), Dwaine Thomas took a visit to TAMU this weekend. He was offered and committed on the trip. TAMU now has two linebacker commits that OU was recruiting first, didn’t every actually offer, and end up eventually landing in College Station. The other LB was Riley Garner.
Outside of Josh Smith and Arthur McGinnis, we aren’t sure where the linebacker recruiting is going (or not going as it were) right now.
Louis Brown: 2015 OU ATH target, Louis Brown, decommitted from Texas over the weekend. We’ve since had a chance to catch up with Brown, and he said that he is considering a few schools at the moment. The good news is one of those schools, according to Brown, is Oklahoma.
Apparently coach Montgomery has already been in touch, and Brown wants to visit the Sooners. We will continue to check with Brown to see if/when a visit is indeed set up. For those of you who don’t remember Brown, he is a long and very athletic kid that could play OLB for the Sooners. He was also committed to Baylor at one time as well.

What’s your take, K, when you’ve talked with him? Rumor was that there could be a commit when he was scheduled back in Dec but had to cancel due to playoffs. Would rest easier if I felt he was a ‘strong’ possibility to OU.
Looking like all of OU’s LB eggs are in that 1 basket. Smith = highly doubtful. Looks like OU not looking to take but 2.

Let’s just hope that the staff changes aren’t finished, yet. Linebacker recruiting is one of the most glaring weak spots in OU’s recruiting strategy. If not for Monty, who knows where we would be right now?

Yes, you are wrong. 4 coaches are in the Middle TN area today to visit Van Jefferson and Josh Smith. Bob and Kish and Gundy and Riley. Don’t know if all 4 are visiting the two recruits together or if they’re going separately.
Well, Kish can keep the engine running and wait outside so the other three can recruit the first one and hop in the car to get to the other.

The linebacker recruiting right now is just astounding. Tim Kish is failing completely. I am sorry he might be a nice guy, but this is just pathetic. Unless we are switching back to the 4-3 with the roy backer, I don’t see how the current recruiting strategy is acceptable. Just really puzzled right now.

I get the impression that Smith will have to be pryed from Vandy. Certainly hope Evans and Bolton pan out after redshirting. Recruiting linebackers is just mystifying- can land a big dog like Deberry by can’t seem to get a second look from anyone else.
i’m sure you can’t speak for him but do you or anyone else know…is it just a major vandy has? or is it the fact that you want your diploma to have vandy on it? family went there? surely you wouldn’t pick vandy to get your foot in the sec, sec, sec door. unless its starting to fester in the smart kids too
I am not sure how accurate this is but someone posted on here his brother plays at Vandy. Another person posted his tweet about commitments not being convenient implying he has difficulty backing out of his commitment. Local guy, local school; never know he may have grown up a big Vandy fan. Plans to visit Norman seem low on his priority list too- kind of “I will make there if I can” tone (not his words).

His brother is a current frosh at Vandy. Recent tweet was #smithbrothersgetitdone. They also have a bio-mechanical engineering degree not offered at OU. Kid is very intelligent and understands football is football and you have your education for life. Good for him and wish him well. McGinnis or bust for OU at LB.

Recruiting = Art, Nucleur Fusion = Science. It’s foolish to confuse the two. The mind of a 17 year old male is a confusing place. To blame coaches or give them too much credit is probably not fair. Todays kids are so self absorbed fueled by social media that unless they want to play for OU they can just move along for all I care.

I agree Jim but not saying he could play right away but if he could put on some size in a year or so he might be ready to go. I am just as confused as anyone about the LB recruiting. I know TU is interested in him and recently offered so I thought I would check him out. I also looked at the kid (Booze) from Edmond North (who is bigger) just wasn’t as impressed by his video’s and I have never seen him play in person.
Kid does have speed and brings some power. Looks long and lean. Thx for posting, enjoy watching young play like they’re having fun.

If I’m a LB recruit, I see a lot of competition to earn a starting position early. Maybe this has something to do with the willingness of these recruits to commit to OU. Granted, there will be competition anywhere you go, but if you feel like you have a better chance to get PT earlier at another program with a better LB coach, then that’s where you go.

Mike doesn’t know what to consider him. In my opinion, label him as an athlete, have him practice safety, LB, or WR and see where he fits best.

Saw him in play in person 3 times and watched his highlights from last year. I think we made a mistake not offering this guy. He can play multiple positions and would jump at any chance to play at OU. The best thing you can say about this kid, is he’s a ball player. He has that knack and savvy that a lot of highly rated kids don’t have.
I wanted him also, as did most here, but the coaches didn’t see enough for some reason.
I think what irks me the most is I feel like OU coaches downplay Oklahoma kids, and will go 300 miles into Louisiana-Miss, or 1000 miles to Fla or Cali and try and get a kid that doesn’t have that drive to be a Sooner that local kids have. I know, it’s just my opinion, but a lot of Oklahoma kids would welcome just to be a walkon to be a SOONER, but we’ll waste time on kids that don’t value it.

I’ve heard a number of people suggest recently that our linebackers aren’t very good in coverage. Can any of the Brainiacs address this issue? Or have they in a post I missed? Personally, I felt like the blame for our poor pass defense rested squarely on the secondary, but I’m no expert. To some extent, I feel like people have identified one problem with Kish and have decided just to pile on the blame, even when he has little are nothing to do with the real issue.

Uh Don we want our original lb’s back (235-250) lbs range. A 220lb rb will not drag them 5 yards. Good aggressive weight turns northbound to southbound runners real violently. That’s all I’m saying.
can these 250 range guys cover the slot…you have to match up and try to be versatile..people seriously forget which league we play in…even Mich State and TCU had to win a shootout against Baylor…sometimes offense is a good defense and will really help your D out through the course of a game

You have no idea how things go when USC knocks on a door for a kid in SoCal that Oregon or anybody else wants. Basically, it’s over. The scholly limits were a big edge for Oregon. Over now, the balance wIll tilt south in a big way.

You asked about USC beating Oregon. I reminded you, it’s the general rule. USC leads the series and will resume pounding the Ducks regularly now that the rediculous probation is over.

Obviously the game was lost with the abysmal first half, but when it was close at the end you knew those whistles weren’t going to favor the visitors in Lawrence. I’m in my 40’s, grew up in Kansas, and can’t remember KU losing to a qustionable call at home. Ever.

I hate moral victories..we needed this one to make up for the k-state loss. Now we have to beat OSU, ISU, and Baylor at their place. They can do it…but it wont be easy.

I don’t usually use Wikipedia as a reference but in this case I believe the definition of Moral Victory applies to this situation.

I think 817 is Ryan Newsome
Every since we started pulling our Linebackers off the field, then the debacle at linebacker were we played virtually none in 2012 (or was that 2013?), it has been difficult for OU to get Linebackers. When was the last time we had a real slobber knocking linebacker? Curtis Lofton? I think Jordan Evans could be, just needs a little more weight without slowing down. Hope this off season creates a few monsters in the middle.
Who are we after in Kansas? Seems like we’ve made two or three stops there recently. I’ve heard about a 2016 kid but this close to signing day I would expect someone else.
Josh Moore is the only one I can think of other than Reed from juco…they could be hitting the juco

The more I think about the moore I don’t think we’re even considering Moore…We don’t need another tight but if we go 4wide then Riley might be wanting better talent at wr and Reed is a nice blend of size and speed that would help stretch the field
