– An interesting note to get us started, I was told that Jason Candle flew out of Oklahoma City this morning. Unfortunately that’s all I was told. But as I noted yesterday, and will note again below, OU is trying to make a decision quickly. So it would be no surprise if Candle was in town for an interview.
– Yesterday, Andrew Gilman of Fox Sports reported that the Oklahoma coaching staff met with TCU co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie. Gilman was not sure, however, whether an offer was extended to Cumbie.
– Our own Brandon Drake (@TheDrakeTFB) spoke to a very well placed source regarding any potential interest in Cumbie and while he could not confirm when or where the interview took place, he was able to confirm Cumbie has, in fact, been interviewed by Oklahoma.
– Brandon also confirmed that Cumbie has not yet been offered the job. However, he was told that Cumbie would likely find out one way or the other as early as the “next few days.”
– Brandon also confirmed that the interest in Cumbie is for an offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach position. However none of us have yet been able to confirm whether a “co-” would precede his title and an additional OC would be brought in to actually call plays. We do, however, suspect this would be the case.
– We have also been told that if offered the position, it is highly likely Cumbie would accept.
– We have also been told, in general terms, that with these changes Bob Stoops is looking make are with the intention to “change the culture” inside the program. We didn’t get clarification on what that meant exactly, but Cumbie and I have a mutual friend (former player that played with Cumbie at Tech back in the early 2000’s) and a few mutual acquaintances. And I can tell you that Cumbie is a great recruiter. He does something that I have long criticized certain OU coaches for not doing enough of, he networks. He gets to know the right people and is very well liked.
– I personally think if Cumbie was brought in as a co-offensive coordinator/QB coach it would be a great hire. From everything I’ve heard, he would bring a great energy and recruiting presence to OU. Additionally, Cumbie has coached both wide receivers and quarterbacks in the past and has been successful doing both.
If OU wants to bring in guy who can instantly help the passing game, he seems like a great fit. What he did with Trevone Boykin this past season was nothing short of amazing. If you think back to my OU vs. TCU preview, I didn’t think the Horned Frogs had much of a chance. Primarily because I simply didn’t believe Boykin was capable of making the kind of jump he obviously did in 2014. For me, personally, that went a long way towards putting me in the camp who would be happy to see Cumbie brought in.
– We have previously noted that OU had reached out to the other co-offensive coordinator/play caller at TCU, Doug Meacham. We are still trying to discern just how serious that interest is on both sides, or how far the talks between the two may or may not have progressed. It might be interesting to see a guy like Cumbie paired with a coordinator who runs a balanced attack with roots in the running game.
– Also wanted to note that back in the early 2000’s, when Cumbie and my buddy played for Texas Tech, Bill Bedenbaugh was a GA on that same staff.
– Have also been told there could very likely be another potential coaching candidate brought in later today as there have been preparations made around the football offices suggesting as such.
– One quick final note related to things on the offensive side of the ball. Oregon’s Scott Frost is a name that many of been quick to throw out, while just as many it would seem have been equally as quick to dismiss as being unrealistic. Well, based on some of what we’ve heard the talk is legitimate. Now whether that means OU could actually convince him to come to Norman, we definitely could not say. But the talk is real based on what we’ve been told.
– Wanted to also add that I have been told that there are still a lot of people inside the program that expect to see coaching changes on the defensive side of the ball. I personally want to see it happen in a big way. If it doesn’t happen, I think it would be an incredible disappointment for a number of reasons.
– UPDATE (1:29pm): There are now multiple reports out this afternoon that OU could have some interest in former Sooner and current Louisville assistant, Garrick McGee. No way to know at this time if their interest in McGee is any more serious than any of the other candidates believed to being considered, or if this is simply more of a token interview type of deal (assuming an interview even does happen at some point). So not a ton of meat on this bone per se, but just wanted to keep you apprised of the latest.

BOOM goes the updates you won’t find anywhere else!
Seriously, the updates and information are really great. I actually feel guilty not paying for this site.
Don’t give them any ideas!
You can’t possibly be drunk this early on a week day?!?!? 🙂
You can pay me if you want too!
Good stuff fellas.
Another board is reporting that Meacham has already turned down the interview request.
We don’t know. He is from Dallas so perhaps he likes it there. Meacham is a very laid back dude and loved by recruits. He would be a definite culture change for the program.
My thought is that if OU doesn’t make the effort on Frost then they have missed a great opportunity. I also like your thoughts on changes in the defense. I can’t believe that new CB and LBer coaches aren’t in the works. Coaching and recruiting at both spots desperately need to be upgraded.
Yep. Gotta give it a full effort.

Dude, you’re hilarious
Cue the “eat me” cake float! LOL
If we could get Frost as play-caller and Cumbie as co-OC/QB coach, I would be ecstatic.
I would also assume Frost would only accept the job if given the implication that he’d be head-coach-in-waiting?
Life is never that good
Perfect combo!
Cumbie as offensive coordinator in waiting!
I don’t think you’ll ever see the “head coach in waiting” happening again. After the debacle at UT with Mack Brown and Muschamp (plus the same mess happening at other places) shows that the Head coach in waiting is an untenable situation. If the head coach doesn’t leave in a short amount of time, the “HC in waiting” leaves.
He wasn’t talking about HC in waiting. I’m with normanite, Frost & Cumbie co-OC w/Frost calling plays.
Could be great hires but I don’t see Frost plus Cumbie as being viable. Frost has only called plays for a year or two and we have to consider the Mariota factor. Also we do not know how much Helfrich is involved in play calling. Cumbie has never called plays. I think Stoops is going to want more play calling experience.
I don’t see Frost at OU for more than 2 years if he is successful. He will be off for a power 5 conference head job. And I do not see our offensive scheme being strong enough in two years to take the chance on Cumbie as a first time play caller.
Definitely could be wrong and I like both coaches. But then everyone is only speculating.
I’m confused…you want to hire a guy that will stay for 6-8 years?? If Frost stays for 2 years only that probably means that OU has won #8.
we can only hope !!
I was on vacation for that “game” against Clemson and deleted that unholy mess from my DVR by cell phone prior to coming home. I have not brought myself to watch it yet on sooner tv. I read there were five turnovers by the OU offense, I saw the pick six or near pick six on the jumbo tron outside ESPn bar—– I spared the children the rant that was bubbling forth. My question is this: how many of those turnovers occurred when OU was poised to score, came after a defensive stop or were just brain farts and not forced by the Clemson D? Was the situation like the 2013 baylor game where the defense was Respectable but got let down by the OU offense?
The defense has some good players but is average on the field. But my bigger issue is 1) there are HORRIBLE recruiters on that side of the ball (outside of Montgomery) 2) I don’t believe the DC is a players coach at all 3) they are slow to react to things 4) there isn’t a clear identity 5) we rarely, if ever, anymore see the defense have a stellar game against a good offense 6) OU can do better than the guys currently employed on the defensive side (other than Montgomery)…so why shouldn’t they?
Absolutely. I never like seeing OU get a HC who has been fired. I don’t think MS has forgotten defense, but he doesn’t have the drive that a guy on the way up has, IMO. Personally, I want a new DC and LBs/CBs, but I’d take new LBs/CBs coaches b/c I think MS can coach and will have a new fire lit under him. I think he’ll do just fine at LSU, a/f what’s happened at OU this yr.
With the connection you have with those close to recruits do you hear back from the them concerning Kish and Mike S recruiting styles?
I know a lot about Kish and Mike’s recruiting ability from a lot of people. Mike could be a better recruiter if he wanted. Another issue is that Mike has a reputation for not being a player’s coach and people use it to negatively recruit. And coach Wright’s recruiting ability is hyper inflated by OU fans IMO.
I’ve gathered as much about Mike based on what former players say (or don’t say) about him compared to what they say about Brent V.
I don’t know enough to comment on MS, but agree on Wright. It seems like there’s been multiple seasons his recruiting has been limited or ended with no significant signings. I know for a period, people thought he was the key to Texas recruiting, but I just don’t see him being that valuable as a recruiter or position coach.
Wright’s two best traits are his texas connection and he knows how to find some hidden gems. I like him in Merv’s position just on his texas connection. Coaches love that dude.
We’re getting hammered in Texas cause BJW
I realize this should focus on offense due to the info. However, who do you see as the top 3 DCs you would like to see interviewed.
“2) I don’t believe the DC is a players coach at all”
During the game I made this same remark. It looks like Mike has lost his players and that’s the worst situation to be in. I don’t know if you can ever heal that gap. No offense to Mike, but that’s the main reason I’d like to see him move on; you can’t be productive if your people won’t respond any more.
This is the emotional side of the issue and football is played with emotion: how in the world does Mike get the confidence of the players back especially after the fiasco this season and the sideline antics especially in the Baylor game ? I just don’t see it that’s why I can’t see him ultimately staying. If he does I can’t see the results being any different.
Agreed- your post reminded me of the great game Gastaluam (sp?) had, played lights out- Stoops rewarded him with a scholly and then he disappeared into the woodwork??? What the heck?
I dont know how well JM knows Frost, but I know he’s good friends with Oregons LB coach.
I hope Jason Candle is coming in to interview here. Asst HC and OC play calling experience. I think he also coached WRs too. Pairing him with Cumbie would be pretty sweet.
Great stuff K. The best. Thanx! Anything circling the rumor mill about Tyson Helton?
Only thing I was told, which we noted a few days back, was there was interest. Just not able to confirm whether an interview took place.
Nothing on Lincoln Riley? I know Jordan isn’t a fan but I like his resume.
Agree. Of Riley or Helton, who has 1 year as OC, prefer Riley’s experience. Has coached up WRs and QBs. Same Pirate tree as Cumbie.
Brandon heard Riley’s name but we could get another source to back it up so we’ve left his name out so far.
Thanx!!
Thanks guys, keep up the good work
If we could pair Frost with either Candle or Cumbie (with Frost calling the plays) I would consider that an absolute home-run.
If OU gets Frost in any capacity it will be a home-run!
agreed
I concur!
This
I actually am more excited to see a candle and cumbie combo! I feel that is very realistic. Both of them are young and have the drive to get to the next level.
Would make some sense to complete the purge of the offensive problems then turn full attention to the defensive side of the house. Have to feel for Kish…. Must suck walking the green mile…… For days!!!!!
I told my wife we should watch that movie for our anniversary every year. She didn’t think it was funny
For some strange reason, years of marriage seems to have dulled my wife’s sense of humor too.
…people just gotta have a sense of humor….but you should still sleep lightly…especially if you discover she has a new found interest in electricity.
one eye open. the only way to sleep
The K Man, and I’m not talking about Cozmo Kramer. Great stuff. I love how methodical we’ve been regarding the offensive shift, and agree we’ll move to the other side of the ball in due time.
I’m not worried about helping the OC with the running game. Bedenbaugh is more than qualified himself, and Gundy. And he’s coached with some great coaching minds. I want someone who can coach passing and QBs/WRs and can call plays.
I’ve had several cups of coffee this morning. Not sure if I can handle more of this legitimate Scott Frost to OU talk. My heart is racing and might explode…
Go to your happy place, a world where everyone around you has a mohawk and says “I pity the fool”!
Can I get you a Redbull?
Does TFB also provide Free Health insurance?
Patience
Hopefully our new OC, whomever it ends up being, can get us a 2015 QB or at least Guarantano or Buechele!
Not to get Jordan fired up again, but I see no mention of Spav. Thanks for the info, btw.
I think K has said he’d really be considered more of a fall back guy at the moment.
If Heupel wouldn’t come back? Ha!
Appreciate the update.. This, I feel, is the first real information that anyone has put out on the search so far.
Boom!!!!!!
If they bring in Cumbie as QB/CO-OC, would the other OC they bring in have play calling duties and coach WRs?
” If it doesn’t happen, I think it would be an incredible disappointment for a number of reasons.”
Amen and pass the ammo!
If Frost were to be an option, I would assume no interview or announcement for him would be made until later next week at the earliest with the championship game coming up. No way Oregon would allow anything to cause distraction for the players, right?
Why? Ohio St.’s OC took the Houston HC job before the semi-final game.. It happens all the time..
Just feel like Oregon would try to prevent anything this week to keep the team focused. I would hope OU would do the same, although I know they didn’t back when Mike left the first time….
Yeah, and there’s a difference of timing. The OU vacancy opened up the week of the championship game, not the week before the conference championship game.
I think BS, having gone through that experience, would keep it quiet AND encourage Frost to do his best to win the NC. It would be better for all concerned if the new OC had done his best at his old school – not to mention just won an NC.
Hypothetically, I believe Bob would allow Frost to concentrate on the NC w/o any distractions and contact him afterwards. Frost’s agent may have been contacted to gauge interest and possibly put a small bug in Frost’s ear but the distraction(s) would definitely be kept to a minimum if they’re serious about landing him- Frost would appreciate this kind of professionalism immensely and be a lot more willing to listen- I would think.
Stoops would probably talk to him this week, but nothing formal until after the NCG.
I feel the need…
“The list is long, but distinguished” – Goose
I know OC is the new hotness, but have there been any
rumblings about Defensive staff?
Read the last paragraph.
Wow, completely missed that whole paragraph. Guess I was focused on OC information. Thanks
no problem just wanted to point in the right direction.
Great article, thanks for the updates guys!
This is the best paid…..free site out there.
FIFY: This the best site out there. 🙂
Good, clear, concise information. Good job K.
Ok. Scott Frost is my vote.
http://youtu.be/7jvLRYhzPVI
Yeah…..don’t think I could be happy with anyone else. They would feel like a consolation prize compared Frost.
I think he could be good, but he said it best himself. He’s where he is (meaning a highly sought after candidate) because of Mariotta. We don’t have a Marcus Mariotta around here.
What was he supposed to say? “Yea, Scott Frost put in work and made Mariotta into the player he is today” Think he was being humble more than anything.
I don’t understand the question. I agree he was being humble. I just think a large part of his success is because he had Mariotta.
I think what they’re all trying to say is the system can make the qb as much as, if not more so, than the qb can make the system
Can’t argue with that.
Couldn’t you say the same for one Kevin Wilson?
That offense made Jeremiah Masoli and Darron Thomas look pretty good before Mariotta.
Mariota’s first two development years Chip Kelly was the head coach and Mark Helfrich was the OC and QB coach. Hard to tell how much of a factor Frost has been.
Great point! I’ve wondered if he actually called plays.
Coach Switzer would often deflect praise to other coaches and the players. Possibly that is going on here. I say it takes both – player can make coach look great and vice versa.
Wow. He does seem very impressive.
That’s hilarious
Cumbie gets my vote. Young, energetic, good recruiter, and respected by his players. Plus he knows two of the 4 quarterbacks on campus.
Thanks for all you guys do!
Frost or meachem + one of the young guys like cumbie. Or i will say they failed
The ONLY thing about Frost that worries me is that Oregon is a machine, and has been a machine for a long time. That offense has been deadly since before Kelly. How much is Frost and how much is Oregon? Not saying either is bad, but has Frost had this success anywhere else? Cumby & Meachem turned around one of the Big12’s worst offenses in one year! Of course, with them, I wonder which of them is the genius. Or, even, which one does what in the offense. I’d hate to take the one that wasn’t responsible for making it all click. So many questions…
Thaaank you. Cumby and Meacham faction over here. Plus it would be funny if we straight jacked TCU’s offense. (I like TCU and Patterson btw)
To your first point. That is exactly why ou needs to go after frost. He knows oregon is a machine, it’s a system so how much is the coach coordinating and how much is the oc coordinating? But I think it’s obvious frost is a very bright guy and I’m sure he is very aware of the tradition here. If he were to turn around a major programs offense, then he will be able to wait for a major job to open and take it. I think his ultimate goal is to end up at Nebraska but I think Nebraska is going to give their new coach 4-5 years at least to get them going.
Oregon wasn’t what it is now before Chip Kelly got there in 2007. And Oregon continues to be successful because they continue to use basically the same system. Helfrich has openly stated that. And Frost was there under both Kelly and Helfrich so i’m guessing he knows that system about as well as anyone by now. I am 100% fine with Frost coming here and implementing that system here. It clearly works well. The Kelly/Helfrich system is like any other good system that assistants take and implement elsewhere (Bill Walsh’s coaching tree, Leach’s coaching tree, etc.) Even Urban Meyer says he stole a bunch of stuff from Oregon that he uses now with Ohio State.
Indeed.
A conductor of an orchestra does not create new musical instruments. They don’t play the instruments. They don’t create new ways to play the instruments. They don’t create new “music.”
However, they ensure that the people who are playing the instruments are well rehearsed. That they are in time with each other. They choreograph the tempo, the feel, and the rhythm of the song.
This isn’t completely unlike a play caller. A top play caller may take OU’s current offensive playbook and call a wonderful game. Whereas a terrible play caller would suffer.
Play calling is a skill. Perhaps the difference between Heupel and others is not in their technical knowledge of the offense, but their understanding of what defenses will do to counter the offense. Thus, calling constraint plays, attacking weaknesses, go to the side where you have numbers,…
Not sure if this is true. Just saying.
I think you at least start with maybe the hottest coach out there which is Scott Frost imo. Only problem is he’s in the middle of the Championship Game preparations. I guess that’s where we trust Bob Stoops on the direction he wants to go and how quickly.
I will provide to each of you a short synopsis of Frost’s playcalling, from an Oregon perspective.
http://fishduck.com/2015/01/anatomy-of-a-drive-the-method-to-scott-frosts-play-calling/
Thanks for the replies. Keep in mind that I’m not at all anti-Frost. EVERY coach we would hire has some question marks. I loved the breakdown of the Oregon drive. And to Zack, I don’t think Frost wants to go to NU. When they fired Pelini a LOT of the Cornhuskers wanted Frost and I had heard he wasn’t fond of the administration at all. Rumor, sure, but so is everything we are talking about so far! Thanks again for the info!
Bob has always had a thing for John Latina, very experienced OC. I believe he is as Duke now. Latina is an older OC, but a team of he and Cumbie could be a good one.
He would also have to coach WR’s?
Probably not. Doubt they would want someone to coach both QB’s and WR’s so Latina would have to coach one. However, Latina is an OL coach.
Think OU should bring Mark Clayton back and give him a shot at the WR coach!!
I’d be curious to know which former OU players were involved in coaching.
There’s a few on the staff as GA’s. Ay you and halze and I think some former oline kid. I’m surprised JD runnels isn’t a GA.
Fuente and Seth Littrel, McGee….to name 3
Not a bad idea. I thought the same thing but he would probably need more experience as a coach although I think he would be a good one
Too many ideas of going back- never move backwards, always forward.
Yeah I think this time around we need to bring in a proven quantity. Former players can be involved in the program at various levels but not in a position like OC or even QB/WR
Don’t think it would be a question about moving backwards with him, more about experience level. Just because you bring a former player, I don’t see that as moving backwards, if he’s qualified.
Hire Shawn Jefferson, WR coach with Tennessee Titans, and father of 4 star WR recruit, Van Jefferson who is visiting. I live just east of Nashville and the Titan is a sinking ship.
Frost was a college Qb who led his team to a perfect season, We should have hired a former Qb who led his team to a perfect season. 🙂
Lol did he win the Orange bowl vs fsu too?
eerie
no but he did win the orange bowl that year
I am still intrigued by Lashlee. He’s young, and Auburn runs a pretty exciting offense.
IF we want to stay with the ZR, I agree, he’d be perfect.
mr super k…..”– Wanted to also add that I have been told that there are still a lot of people inside the program that expect to see coaching changes on the defensive side of the ball. I personally want to see it happen in a big way. If it doesn’t happen, I think it would be an incredible disappointment for a number of reasons. ”
……..if I remember correctly, bstoops said in the presser that there were no changes on the d side and we had 9 guys coming back, stunned when I heard that…………..I don’t understand if mstoops is being nudged to find another job, he wants to leave, or what………..my question is, what if he is still here for whatever reason, don’t you think we would then have a dc, who on top of being under fire for results, would be unhappy at the same time he is trying to straighten things out……also. I agree that there is probably some gulf between mstoops and some players, at least…..any thoughts…….thxs
No more changes at this time or right now. Something of the sort, leaving it open ended.
What I thought was interesting was when asked about Mike Stoops he said his status with us has not changed. Which seemed to me to say that Mike might be looking to change his status with OU.
This is kind of in line with some of the rumors that have been flying around about that Bob wants Kish gone and that Mike is looking for a job so he can take Kish with him. Again this is all rumor but on recruiting alone Kish has no business being on this staff next year at all.
Just saw TFB tweet that we’re targeting Garrick McGee. Come home prodigal son!
What happened with McGee at UAB? He left or was let go?
That is a good question. Also heard that Petrino was the play caller and not Garrick really…
think petrino is the main o mind anytime, but mcgee was his oc at ark the yr they were getting good, left for uab, and back at l’ville as oc again with petrino……think he’s at least learning under a good o coach but probably not enough exp for ou, although they’re looking at some ‘little experience’ guys
Maybe you haven’t heard about this: http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/11967626/uab-blazers-shut-football-program
Holy Crap. I forgot all about that. Do we really want a guy who had his program cancelled??? (sarcasm)
LOL I didn’t think about that at first either.
He was fired before that. This year he was OC for Louisville.
Don’t think he was fired.
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2014/01/garrick_mcgee_dumps_uab_head_c.html#incart_flyout_sports
Yeah my bad.
He left for OC at Louisville having been Patrino OC at Arkansas. He was very unsuccessful at UAB but it was obvious that he was getting little support from the university as they shut the program down one year after he left.
So according to FootballScoop, Bobby Petrino called Bob and recommended that he interview Garrick McGee. Why would Petrino do that? If I really like my guy, I’m not going to try and pawn him off on someone else.
If he really likes him then maybe he’s just trying to help him out? Or maybe Petrino can’t get any ladies with Black Mamba around…
Garrick McGee – While I appreciate his connection to the program, I can’t get behind hiring him. These two positions available are too important. Garrick expirence is just too limited for me.
I think he could make a good co-OC QB coach. Not calling plays though
We sure are considering a lot of CO-OC/QB coaches. Not disagreeing with you, but dang.
I think it’s just the trend across all of CFB.
How much experience are you looking for? McGee has been doing this for several years now (don’t want to google exact yrs) and has been successful.
He has no play calling expirence or a limited amount so he might be looked at as a QB coach. His expirience mostly centers around NW and Ark which I guess is good but it’s just a weird feeling that I have that he’s not the right guy. I’m sure I could be wrong.
We could be wrong about any of the prospective hires. lol
Agree with your comments on McGee.
McGee might be one of the most experienced candidates out there. He has been a college coach for 15 years. He was OC/QB coach at Northwestern in 2006-07. QB coach at Arkansas 2008-09 and OC/QB coach 2010-11. He was Ryan Mallet’s coach when that 2011 team passed for 3,500+ yards, had a 1,000 yard rusher and a TE that caught 54 passes. He was UAB’s head coach in 2012-13 getting out of there before they dropped the program in 2014. He was OC at Louisville in 2014.
I am all for Garrick. He has been with Petrino for years, at Arkansas and now Louisville. Yes, he was head coach at UAB and it didn’t work out but who could have saved that program. He is a coach that believes in balanced attack and has groomed some damn good QB’s.
Other than Frost, he would be my pick!
I believe in Bobby, but I hope we don’t go for the big name just for the name.
Lon Kruger was a ho-hum hire but he’s turned out great. I know signing day is imminent, but I want them to take their time and get this right.
I thought you mean Petrino for a second….
I agree with your point but not your example. Never saw Kruger as a ho-hum hire. He had taken four different teams to the NCAA tourney and was known for his re-building abilities. I absolutely loved the hire.
Respectfully disagree with you guys about Kruger not being a ho-hum hire. Maybe that’s not the right word exactly, but my point is that Kruger was not a hot, sexy name in coaching at the time.
That’s cool. Everybody has a right to their opinion.
“Kruger” and “hot, sexy” in the same sentence made me shudder
Ha, does this “Krueger” make up for it? https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/eb/57/50/eb575078b78a8c9755fb316dba49dac6.jpg
I’ll allow it.
Kruger may not have been a hot, sexy hire but Joe C. had to come up with $2 million per year on a multi-year contract to get Lon’s signature after Lon had turned down at least once.
I agree with your premise and example of Kruger isn’t bad either. I think your saying OU didn’t try to make a big splash with that hire like they did when they hired Jeff Capel which didn’t work out. It was more of a turtle than a rabbit hire if you will. Slow and steady wins the race, flashy and fast doesn’t always equal success! I think Bob Stoops knows this is his chance to right the ship and he will do his best to get the right guy! If we get as good of a OC as we got Head Basketball coach it will be a complete and utter SLAM DUNK!
Kruger was far from a ho-hum hire.
Alabama losing three underclassmen to the draft- Cooper, Yeldon and some DB
And Henry will still be a back-up.
Unless they play us and then he’ll be a star!!!
I’ve heard he has stamina issues. That’s why he’s not a starter.
Did his girlfriend tell them that? 🙂
BOOM!
No Ray,
Your girlfriend told him that!!
Had to do it. Lol
My wife won’t be happy about that.
Coop is gonna be really, really damn good in the NFL. That dude is a BEAST.
When Stoops was hired he hired Leach, and correct me if Im wrong, Leach didnt call the plays at Kentucky. Hal Mumme was the HC and called the plays if Im not mistaken. Guys that are smart and been in a system for awhile who dont call plays currently really doesnt scare me. I think Stoops will find out all he needs during the interview process and will get a young, sharp play caller and experience might not be that big of a factor.
You are correct and I agree!
I don’t say you are wrong, but I doubt they will go that way. What you are describing is the guy they just got rid of. Huepel was the QB under Leach and had spent a good deal of time under Wilson. A lot of people perceive that Huepel’s problem was his lack of actual play calling experience.
Playing calling can be summed up simply. Get the ball to where the defense is not.
Ah, so easy to say. Lol! But you are right.
Garrick would be a good hire.
I just don’t know how much he does as far as calling plays… Figured Petrino calls plays and he just has the OC title. I don’t know that…just my perception.
I have a hard time assessing this, partly because I’m no HC so not really qualified to pass judgment, but also because I have my heart set on a big name, from a big time program, with a proven track record. I just feel like this needs to be a “statement” hire for our program…one that turns the heads of recruits and gets our current players excited.
How? Louisville’s offense was anything but great. Only reason I see people supporting this hire is the OU connection.
Other media outlet’s headlines suggest we’re “targeting” Garrick McGee, but also mentions that Booby Petrino called us to connect the interview? Big difference IMO.
Very serious, Kyle Shanahan ?
Very serious, NO! Ha.
I will say again I think they want Frost to call plays and Cumbie to be QB coach. They can call them Co if they want. If that is the case, I’m sure you wont hear anything of substance with Frost until after the NC game.
If Frost is here but a couple years, he would of least installed the offense and Cumbie can step in.
That would be a dream team. I want that combo the most, just don’t think we can get Frost unless Org thinks its the system and does not money match. I say pay him the 1.3 mill he’s worth it. Then pay Cumbie around 500,000 and call it a day. What do you think JM will get with his new Co-Def? You would think OU would need to pony up some bucks for him. OU will be close to the highest paid staff in the NCAA, but if we want back on top that’s what it’s going to cost. Glad I don’t have to spend the money..
OU is such a “high profile” program, that I think they wouldn’t have to pay too much money to get both. They are both young, and with the history of OC’s in OU’s past getting head coaching jobs, I think it would be very attractive for them. Especially when you consider the year OU had this year, there is room for plenty of improvement. If they do well, they will be able to demand pretty much anything.
True That!
Texsa thinks the same thing, history can only get you so far
I think we could get Frost for $750-800,000 and Cumbie for $450,000. Frost is only on a $400,000 salary now. We were paying JH $600,000 and JN like $450,000.
Movie ref “Frost yourself”, That can be our new motto for the O. ” come to OU and Frost yourself with the NC” LOL
Let’s go get a former Oklahoma QB to call plays because he’s been a quarterback so he’s money at teaching QBs and he’s a former Sooner…..what could go wrong
Is there still much interest in Lincoln Riley? He has a number of years of experience calling plays and appears to really have a good mind for offense based on the offenses he has coached. Not to mention, he has really helped to progress some players that were not highly recruited at all while at ECU. Pairing him with a guy like Candle who can recruit his butt off, not to mention coach, seems like a great way to get some more youth, bright minds, top-notch recruiters, and a change of pace in our coaching staff.
IMHO GM would make an excellent choice but the new OC and position coach have already
Who is Jason Candle? First time I’ve seen his name mentioned on either this site or Landthieves.
OC at Toledo if I’m not mistaken.

Interesting article from Ian Boyd outling differences between spread and pro style offenses. Very well done if you’re interested.
http://www.footballstudyhall.com/2015/1/8/7509819/spread-vs-pro-style-offense-whats-the-difference-Florida-State-Oregon-Ducks
Everything Ian Boyd writes is well done. He’s by far my favorite author for study hall…
I really like the Cumbie guy I think he would make an excellent hire first of all he already knows both Knight and Mayfield because he tried to recruit both to TTU plus he knows Bendenbaugh from TTU he was a GA at TTU when Cumbie was the QB their so the O-line connection I think is a plus also Cumbie should know Knights strengths and weaknesses along with knowing the same with Mayfield. Frost might be a good hire but is he in it for the long haul I see him being a one maybe two and done and on to be a head coach however is he willing to take a young up and comer like a Cumbie and show him how to call the plays and so on and so on . I don’t know who it will be but in Bob I trust.
If we are going to dream then lets dream big Co-OC/QB & Play Caller Scott Frost AND Garrick McGee Co-OC/WR. Do this and call it a day! (dreaming I know)
Hey Super K, what are the recruits saying? Who is the “Hot Name” with recruits right now? Not that it should determine anything but just interested to know what kind of offense is exciting to these high school kids!
FWIW…

UPDATE Jan. 8, 2:30 p.m.-A source tells me a highly respected Big 12 offensive coach told him he thought Arizona State offensive coordinator Mike Norvell is another name OU has had on its radar as a co-offensive coordinator. Interestingly Norvell is reportedly considering becoming Tulsa’s OC.
Mike Norvell is one name I’ve been looking for.
Tulsa has already hired an OC….2 actually, they are going the Co route. And why would he go from being an OC to a Co-OC?
It’s Dean Blevins reporting, he usually doesn’t let himself be constrained by facts.
Who needs facts, when you can be first!?!?
I saw Dean with his shirt off once…he actually has this tattooed on his back in old english…
like Bob said… that’s Deano for ya…
Sounds like Norvell took himself from the Tulsa job so good reporting there. Here is what the reporter would have found if he had googled Norvell’s name and read the fifth link. http://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/college/asu/2014/12/11/asu-mike-norvell-removes-himself-candidate-tulsa-job/20243703/
and that was for the head coaching job at TU… Deano can’t be bothered with too much research…
McGee and Frost would be the slam dunk of all slam dunks. Frost has been a receivers coach before, definite plus.
Like Vince over that poor French guy kinda slam dunk.
BS past history of hiring Leach supports hiring Frost.
Both were controlled and supervised by the HC. Both bring a new scheme to the Big 12.
Leach didn’t call plays and Frost does is the difference.
I believe Frost will want to separate himself from the HC and establish his own independent reputation and identity just as Leach did from Hal Mummy.
Cumbie is the the perfect complement to Frost .
Money is needed to make it happen.
Just my two cents worth.
My same thought yesterday. I compared frost to leach, too.
But, can we outbid NIKE? They do have that ace in the hole!
The HC may feel he can train a new OC and not need to spend the money on the one he trained.
Good point!
Frost salary is $400,000 right now. JH was like $605,000 and JN was like $450,000. I’m sure Oregon can afford a salary increase. But, I think everyone involved in the program understands that great OC and position coaches salaries are on the rise. Some making 7 digits. Why couldn’t they throw $750-800,000 at Frost and $400-450,000 on Cumbie?! I mean we are talking about building a $350-400 million stadium and facility renovation. Sometimes you have to spend a lot to make a lot. But, don’t get me wrong please please please lol. Some of the small schools are having success. Even Baylor has a 7 digit salary coach outside of Art-B!! Enough dicking around, BS knows he needs to go out and “nail this one down”. Full court press. Break out the big guns. The entire Big 12 needs this.
Allow me to say, if OU lands the duo that many here are spitballing/guessing/prognosticating/speculating/whatever of Frost and Cumbie…I might die. In a good way.
My face will melt.
Quick update on my dad: they took him off sedation today and he’s responding well just confused since it’s been a week now. All his vital organs have recovered thankfully and they are planning on taking him off the vent either this evening or tomorrow. Just want to thank everyone for their support, it’s helped a lot!
Great news Stephen, BOOM !!!!
Thank God!!!!
Good news.
Hang in there man, it is a rough road for your Dad and you as a family!
Good news!
That’s good to hear Stephen.
God Bless your father, and you and the family Stephen.
Cool, we’re pulling for your dad and thanks for keeping us in the loop
Man, Stephen, that is great to hear. Just gonna keep getting better everyday.
Thank God!

oooooOOOoooooo
Aim for the gold and go get it – offensive side now and defensive next
Does anyone know what the fans from Oregon are saying /speculating about their OC or other programs for that matter?
I think their focus is elsewhere at the moment. I suspect they’d be disappointed, not devastated, and have confidence in the “system” they’re running and the plug-and-play ability they believe to have w/ a new OC.
I have a buddy that is an Oregon alum and big time fan. He had no idea Frost was being talked about for Oklahoma OC.
Interesting.
I would think Frost has had several inquiries. The announcers showed him big time love during their play off game.
I don’t doubt that he has been contacted or at the least his agent, but the Oregon fans are a little oblivious to all this talk right now. Most of them I don’t think have a tremendous attachment to him since he has only been there 5 years and just one as the OC.
with that picture next to your name do you really expect us to pay much attention to what you posted? She could be my OC!!!
No doubt
McGee would be a terrible selection since he has shown no aptitude as a quality OC. His only asset is his ethnicity…but it be just llke the OU administration to ‘recommend’ that Bob hire him as OC…hopefully this is just a courtesy interview. And what does Petrino have against Stoops to call Bob and recommend GM ? If he was any good, Petrino would want to keep him on the Lousiville staff…………
Comments like that have no place on this site. Other readers have asked you politely to tone it down. Please give that some thought.
many better candidates out there for the choosing who have far better coaching resumes……..
Why didn’t you just say that the first time without bringing race into it?
You beat me by 5 seconds!
and I’m not knocking the guy for his ethnicity. OU could use more diversity on the football staff, no question. at this position and with the qualities needed to improve over JH, need to keep looking past GM
I would like them to go younger than GM myself. I have no prob with you expressing any view points. It’s your view and you can bring it up as your view if you want. I think you did it, this time, in a respectful manner, but that’s just me.
I thought so too but others disagree……
Stephen, that’s just the point. Remarks are not offensive because the one saying it thinks they are; remarks are offensive when reasonable people hearing them are offended. Numerous people were bothered by your remark; that should be the measure you use to decide if you made a mistake or not.
Wasting your time with him. Just sayin.
yeah, worded my comment wrong… it didn’t come out right .
geez, enuf with the apologies……..you stated it once, that’s enuf, at least for most people…….it’s only a fb message blog where all that’s written disappears quickly
Stephen, at the bottom of that post, there are some boxes. One says Edit. Click on that box and it will let you edit your comment. once done, just save edit. not hard to do if you want to change it.
I’ve got no dog in this fight but I will say some people are always looking to be offended by something, doesn’t mean it is actually offensive, you just may see it that way by your own choice. I thought he made his opinion known in a pretty tactful way. That’s just may opinion though.
repeat offender
There 1st time for everything. …..I guess….
no question my post was constructed badly… should have looked at it and re-wrote it and express my thoughts differently… I did make a mistake all the way around…………..
I didn’t have an issue with your post. Although, it’s kind of silly to think that GM is not well thought of by Coach P.
no question Petrino likes him as a coach since he has employed him twice….my post sucked…….
Katy…..I like some of the younger guys mentioned as well headed by Frost and only because of his resume at Oregon… some others might do as good a job. just tough to analyze their strengths …
You hire the best person. If you do you get diversity. I wouldn’t want you heading up any diversity team, considering what you say on this site.
Sam…………..I agree completely. Hire the best person that you can get…who that is is the question.
Sam…………I like Scott Frost but OU may not be able to get him —or–afford him…after that, ???????
its been said now……
Because that’s what bigots do
Wish you had just said that the first time
yep, I was wrong. poor wording ….
Best part of your post is the ……………………………………………………….
you’re entitled to your opinion as I am mine…………….
You are fully entitled to your opinions. But you are not entitled to express your opinions if they will be offensive to others. I’m just asking that you consider the impact of your remarks on others. Basic civility.
I said nothing offensive. there are better choices available with better resumes……
It is OFFENSIVE you think “ethnicity” has anything at all to do with him getting an interview. He is not my choice for the job either but because of the reason you are now saying “better candidates” and such. I haven’t had that many problems with your posts in the past that one just caught me wrong. Maybe I’m having a bad day!
It’s not a bad day, Doobie. It’s Ground Hog Day with Stephen. Did you read his post regarding Title IX and those “lesbian-types” are trying to take what is your.
Nope, definitely not a bad day.
no, you were not wrong. I was.. should have constructed my post differently…
I think what SD was referring to is the fact that, in the NFL, teams are required to interview candidates from different ethnic backgrounds. I’m not sure, but I think this may be what he is talking about.
You’re kid in class that just don’t get it. Society, just like every kid in that class, can’t move to the next lesson until that kid gets it. You are holding up the progression of humanity, man. Hit the damn books and get wise.
It is said that things may be explained to the ignorant, but can never be understood for them.
Everyone has a role in a kind society. Some design rocket motors, some herd goats.
Well, that was funny. Thanks for the laugh.
Jed, you’re awesome bro. Witty good post. Even though it has been said before…..
I’ll herd goats, just like the shepherds.
I do not like you. Unreal.
Garrick has been on Petrino’s staff at 2 different schools now… I don’t think Petrino hates Garrick or Stoops…
Believe Petrino is the play caller at Lousiville. Not sure what titles the other coaches have…..
I never said anything about who was calling plays… you made the assertion that if McGee was any good Bobby would want to keep him… well he’s hired him 2 different times… I think he believes Garrick is good…
ok…..petrino likes him.
I would agree….. poorly worded post on my part…………..
one’s painfully awkward rob lowe. the other…..
yeah, I know. the hairy one…..
TMI brother, TMI
yep, no question the post was not written the way I should have written it…one of my poorest efforts …………
You’re okay SD, you did your profuse apologies. Lets keep moving.
What ethnic qualities does he have?
well he had to put up with Howard shnellenberger when he played at OU so he learned to have patience..a tough time for both himself and eric moore….
Was just curious. If you used the word ethnicity by it’s definition, that’s one thing. If you used it to mean a person’s race, then your comment was out of line but you have made your apologies either way.
You’re an ignorant troll.
no question my post was insensitive. will try to do better. hope you have a good day, too…..
This alone should get you wiped off of this site.
Dangit, you made me look.
He has been in my scroll-over list for some time, I never read what he writes, but then you had to go and tempt me.
I need eye bleach.
eastex………….ceretainly wasn’t intentional but it was inappropriate and I’ve apologized to each who has responded.. I;ve had better afternoons………….you have a good evening.
Thanks Stephen. Have a good night brother. No man (see there, EDIT: no man or woman) exists all at once. I could be the most ignorant man in the county at 4:00pm tomorrow, but be full of goodness and kindness at 3:00pm Saturday. See you again.
Eye bleach… Perfect. Love it!!!
Boom, my post was inappropriate. all I can do is apologize and try to do better…. have a good evening.
Hey dingus, you do have an edit button.
didn’t use it in time……….
so do it now
Not doing so certainly dilutes his apologies, don’t it?
Yeah, I suppose- I’ve made dumb mistakes before and I believe he’s sincere in his apologies but if I had the chance to edit one of them I sure would have.
I don’t believe his apologies are sincere, reinforced by the fact he refuses to edit them.
He has outraged people here before with his nonsense. I normally just scroll over him without reading.
Thanks Stephen. Hopefully this will make you pull the reins back and think before you type. I appreciate you being apologetic to me and the others as I’ve now read the thread. Keep the passion but focus on the positive.
Don’t like the beginning of your second sentence at all.
Did anyone else see this on the Tweeter
yes, posted below…
My bad
That tweet was from December just so everyone knows
The January 4th post seems to indicate he is done at louisville. Another post says they finally got us home.
IMO..Garrick is an intriguing choice, I am not saying I am for or against. But he did an excellent job at Arkansas who went to the Sugarbowl, so impressive that Petrino wanted to bring him in at Louisville where he has continued to flourish. I don’t think his UAB stuff is relevant, because we would want him to be a coordinator where he has done well, not a head coach.
believe Petrino is calling plays at Lousiville, is he not ?????
He opted out of the HC position in 2014. Now it’s 2015 there is no football program. So at least the guy has survival skills.
no question UAB was a ‘no-win’ situation for any coach…it had to be tough working with that administration …..
IMHO, the longer it takes to name an OC the more likely it is Frost.
He is the only one that needs to wait for an announcement.
Good observation, hope you’re onto something.
I’ve got time.
Agreed!
I pray I am wrong! I just do not see it. Frost turned down D1 head coaching jobs this year. I just do not see him making a lateral move. I think he is waiting for a better D1 job and is gone..
I leave the state for work for 2 weeks and this is what happens? Disaster against Clemson and heads are rolling as they should be. I can only hope that this is the kick start the program needs.
Welcome back from hell pitbull, we’ve just been kicking back cleaning house.
It’s good to be back. Should be an interesting 2 weeks off, my 2nd daughter will be born soon and some new coaches at OU
Congrats!
Thank you all! Will let everybody know when she’s born.
Dang that’s awesome. Hope you get to be at home when she’s born. Best wishes to you and momma!
awesome my man
That’s awesome, Pit! Congratulations!
Hey stranger, it’s been way too long since I’ve heard from you. How’s things been? And thank you btw.
Nice to hear from ya again!
So it’s all YOUR fault, then? Next time, stay at home for the post season!
good to have you back.
Jordan mentioned “plug and play” at Oregon.
Perfect parallel to Leach at Kentucky.
Both had HC who were the architect of the Offence.
New OC could easily be plugged in.
Dough Meacham refused the interview request because he is a poke at heart. He probably rather see OU lose than OSU win still.
That’s fine I’d rather have doug.
Is that his fat, older brother?
One of the many reasons I like this site is there are a lot of knowledgeable and passionate fans. Each of us have ideas/favorites that we’d like to see become the next OC, none are right or wrong. I’m just going to trust Bob and his process for making the best decision for our program.
Did Amonte Caban decommit or is someone on twitter just still trying get him to come to OU?
Seen that also, was wondering the same thing?
We NEED him. Where the hell is Jerry!!
Get the bat phone
He’s getting the BOOM button replaced on his phone, done wore that sucker out.
He’s just resting for the final 20 days.
The music in Monty’s car goes Boom, Boom Boom.
Where is this at I couldn’t find it on the twittasphere
Uhh, not sure. Whoever does most of those player edits I think did it.
A nice little write up on Jason Candle
http://m.toledoblade.com/UT/2014/02/09/Toledo-s-top-salesman.html?DB_OEM_ID=18000
I would prefer the new OC be announced after Monday night.
/nudge-nudge-wink-wink-say-no-more
If you know something you better spill it! There could be an angry mob at your door in no time. lol
I know what we all know, there is still one D1 football game left to be played on Monday night.
ESPN doesn’t think so as I’ve hardly seen any promos. Tex, I got Frost/Cumbie – your thoughts
I wouldn’t know, seldom turn to espn.
I’m sticking with my preference, after Monday night.
I see said the blind man.
Boom, that was my thinking also. Bring Cumbie in to coach qb’s or wr’s since he can do both really well and let Cumbie learn how Frost works his magic. If or when Frost gets a HC job then Cumbie could jump right in and be OC. Just some thoughts.
I’m a small fish in the pond so I will wait to hear what the Big Catfish has to say. It’s my understanding he has a little more football knowledge than myself. Hard to imagine but that’s what I’m told.
The more time goes by the more I think they are waiting til the Title game is over and announce then. Right now I won’t say it is do or die for next year, the one thing that, whoever they bring in better have some thick skin because we all know that we will be on them right off the bat. ;). LOL!!!!
No SEC team?
Damn no SEC team, lets cancel game and can show SEC volleyball
C’mon man, we’ll show the LSU/Bama natty game for 8 hours.
Strike McGee off the list..
Good for him. WIth all the speculation going around, L’ville nipped it in the bud real quick.
Bob got him a raise, wonder if he gets a commission.
hahah..Good one
Strange, So is this how it went down? BP calls stoops and says look at this guy for your OC Oklahoma shows some interest then UL gives him a raise to keep him?
Well it would at the very least get an Ex-Sooner a pay raise. Im ok with that
LOL, Thats a good thing, just cant understand BPs angle if he really did contact stoops
Those Cards are such teases
Sure wished the Big 12 -2 would have taken them when we brought in TCU and WVU +1 more
Yup, Louisville and BYU? One very tough conference!
Football scoop says Bob asked Louisville to interview McGee & he turned it down/got a nice raise to stay at Louisville.. When i say “turned it down” i mean he turned down the opportunity to interview..
BS is a cautious coach. Knows his 2nd step before he takes the first step.
The first was firing JH. 2nd step should have been taken unless there is a reason to wait.
None of the gents mentioned so far seem like THE offensive coordinator to me, except, wait…wait…wait…Scott Frost. All except Scott seem like co-OCs to me, leaving the main game planning and play calling to THE offensive coordinator.
I’m wondering what offense the gents who’ve been mentioned will bring to OU. We know what scheme Scott would bring, and it’ll work.
Anyone care to help out?
Cumbie? Some sort of TCU-like Airraid that the Big 12 has seen for a decade.
Helton?
Candle?
You’re finally warming up to the idea of this Frost guy coming aboard. 🙂
It’s growing on me. And not because I have an uncanny resemblance to him…
As displayed in your profile pic…(lol)
L’Carpetron, if I was a betting man (after reading all of your posts) I would think you were pulling for Frost. That’s me, just call me vegas.
If you were a betting man, then what would you wager that I’ll be absolutely crushed and depressed if Scott doesn’t come to OU? Just a wild guess…
Wait, he pushes all in. Oh wow, this is a game changer.
This waiting game is killing me…. I’m not sure what will happen first.
1. Gas at $1.25 Gallon or 2.) Scott Frost & Cumbie Hirings 3.) Pigs Fly
Hoping for something in the middle. BOOMER!!
#2 is in the middle of #1 and #3.
Good choice.
S000NER!
A woman president…
I’d be on board with that if she were the best candidate.
Well, if she is the BEST candidate, then that pig is AIRBORNE!!
Pork futures are up.
yessir….. We need to incorporate Bigfoot and a Leperchaun in these threads. Lol
Seriously…. We need some OC update news in a serious way. This long intermission is getting troublesome.
Not to get into a political debate but if its the one I think you mean, I’ll give a big ole no thanks and move on about my day
If I recall, Mike Leach wasn’t the play caller when we hired him. Until that time it was considered Hal Mumme’s offense.
Leach was a lawyer who became a coach under Mumme. No play calling expierence but highly recommended for his strategy and understanding of this unique offense that BS found very difficult to defend while DC at Florida. He hired Leach because of the above and his preferred choices refused the OC position.
Pepperdine Law. Fascinating story.
Agreed. I find it interesting how different that hire looks 16 years later. First off, a lot of people were pissed we were hiring an assistant. And a defensive assistant to boot. Then RichRod turned us down, along with the other guy that I can never remember, people were underwhelmed to say the least with Leach.
I believe there is always a reason to hire the best guy, regardless of title.
Nice history lesson. Did not know about that whole period in terms of the hiring.
I believe so…. Kentucky. Had the big left handed QB (Lorenzen) I think.
Yup. I just watched a news story about his arena football team…dude is still playing QB, still wearing #22, and weighs around 380 lbs…
and looks a fat man in a lil’ coat 🙂
True. Leach was BS third or forth choice.
Today, he would not be a serious option,IMHO
So tennessee picked up their 3rd qb commit for 2015 yet we only want 4 on campus.
They have no scholarship limit there
I like their coach but I think we will find out something isn’t right in the next few years.
They do have an impossible amount of recruits with very high ratings for a school that has had minimal success….nah it’s legit.
Well and I thought they over signed last year with somewhere around 30 recruits and this year they have 28 already.
You would be correct in your thinking. It might be why we have Orlando Brown and they don’t.
2013 : 22
2014: 31
2015: 28 so far
Ours wear blue jersey’s, theirs wear gray shirts.
New recruits doing there best for OU on Twitter. Trying to get Stephens, Orr and QB for 16 Guarantano. BOOMER SOONER
Yup! Haughton and Humphreys going after other recruits big time.
Also Roy Williams for DB coach
A guy who wasn’t know for coverage, coaching kids who can’t cover…but I bet he would be a good coach
Don’t know, just seen it on Twitter, have not really thought about Roy as a coach.
Coaches don’t wear capes!
Would love to keep Roy around the Program as much as possible.
Monty should!
Switzer wore fur capes
I thought he was a fur coat guy.
coat/cape, same to me since i don’t know the difference.
It was a fur cape all along…
you go Toats
Is Stephens locked up (as in committed)…Monty and Viney’s twitters sound pretty positive
not yet, they are working him
This is the philosophy I’d like to see in whoever comes in for OC:
“My philosophy has been to coach an attacking style of football and
stretch the defenses in as many different ways as you can. You have to
get the ball into the hands of your playmakers and let them operate in
order to be successful.” – Chip Kelly
http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/1/7/7499689/oregon-offense-ohio-state-defense-playoff-national-championship
This article’s pretty interesting because it describes the previous careers of Oregon’s OCs over the past 2 decades.
Give me Scott Frost!!!!!
Thoses who play poker, I am all in on Frost and Cumbie.
Any one wish to call?
It will cost you the public humiliation of letting a new comer neophyte win.
I’ll call, but I’m drawing light.
Isn’t that still illegal?
Smart move. You can’by loose.
I’m waiting for my 8pm Open Post. K, you finishing up, dinner’s getting cold.
OPEN POOOOST!
Frost and Combie, pretty please, OU. Make it happen.
Mega like
Do It!
Finkle wants some dinkle
I literally just lol’d. My wife looked at me as if I were an idiot…she knows me well…

I had a great visit on the phone with my boy from the (303)
hmmm who are we recruiting in Colorado
Who do we have up there? I’ve lost track.
Thats JM for you. He knows this is a ? mark.
Maybe OU is starting a snowboard team and they contracted out his services.
Who have we gone after in Colorado?
Mike Bobo!!!! Just kidding…it would be nice, though…
303 is around Denver.
I live in Denver! But I wasnt on the phone with JM… I swear it..
what’s your measurables and we’ll be the judge of that
4 INCH VERTICAL! ON HIS BACK! lol
I’ll let you be the judge of that haha
Sure. Sure.
Nice of JM to let us know how much work he’s doing, not that we didn’t already know!
He meant (903)…since been corrected.
NE Texas.
maybe daylon mack? gladewater is 903
I wish. The kid is an absolute beast. Most impressive player out of all the HS all star games last week.
It’s a junior and no longer in Colorado according to OS but Im not sure that’s correct because he’s an OL prospect.
Edit: therefore I wouldn’t expect bedenbaugh to need help.
Jerry Montgomery @OU_CoachJerryM 12m12 minutes ago
Man the phone is blowing up right now, I had a great talk with my boy from the (281) #LetsGo
When we win the National title we’ll have to carry BS AND MONTY!
And Bedenbaugh. He’s already started on 2016.
We better get a forklift.
Houston calling
What prospect is he referring to?
Could be Lampkin, Dalton, or both.
Thank you sir.
Maybe Lampkin
If anyone has posted this update on McGee, I apologize. NewsOk reports he got a raise and is staying with Petrino.
Was posted a while back bud.
Thanks.

We are getting it in tonight, I had a great visit with my boy from the (615) #BOOMER
LOL JM ON A TEAR!!
Nashville!!
Jefferson and Smith
It’s like a Santa spotting. He’s in Nashville, no Houston, now in E Tx.
LOL
I hope Monty NEVER LEAVES!
If Bob wants to retire I’m good with it now
I hope he’s outdoors because his phone is going to catch FIRE!
His phone has the latest turbo cooling technology. Kish uses a flip
Kish uses a rotary phone.
Kish calls the operator to plug in the wire.
Kish uses soup cans attached with twine.
Damn string broke….build a fire for smoke signals.
Yup.
Barney Fife of recruiting. He’s only got one bullet.
Perfect!
And he shoots himself in the foot with it.
With wet powder.
couldn’t hit a broad side of a barn
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!
Well, Kish is on a party line and there are a lot of kids who use it and he can’t get on to save his life.
Kish is the Maytag Man.
Kish would have more commits if the kids new Morse Code….
We’re holding a spot for you sonny – STOP
Still looking for my first recruit – STOP
Boom 405! – STOP
I think that was called a Telegram, dude. LOL
How do you think they sent telegrams, by email? LOL!
“Come on over to the Oklahoma Sooners! Together, we’ll give’em the ol’ one two! We’ll give’em a knuckle sandwich! We’ll knock their block off!” – Tim Kish
Just call me, br549. – Tim Kish
Breaker 19, this is the kish of death, hows my front door looking.
No one is there.
Still.
You might be a five star but I’m 10-100, gonna have to get back to ya later.
10 100 is gotta take a wizz a’int it? are you making fun of his old balls and loose skin now? 🙂
The old 10-100 involves the rest room for sure.
“Why….. we’ll give em the old whatfer seeeeeee? They’ll never take us alive! Myeah-myeah!”
*Twists mustache
Kish’s phone is made by Fisher Price
that’s funny
It’s a Jitter Bug…It only has 2 numbers programmed: 911, and someone named “Sis”.
911 puts him on hold
I thought he used pigeons?
or smoke signals
or morse code
“Ringy dingy!”
Lol the kish of death
like the cow says moo thing?
Hey. Up till a year ago, I used a flip phone, and for texting I had to push some buttons 3 times to get to that letter.
old school, welcome to the new age.
How are those cassette tapes holding up?
I don’t know let me call you on my rotary phone. Maybe you can hear me better.
Cassette, my tapes have tracks.
I still have an old 8 Track.
In a way……that’s awesome.
Kish? Is that you?
I think this board will need some sensitivity training. Y’all have to be kind to elders.
Don’t take it personal, Connie. We’re just having some fun at Kishy’s expense.
No offense taken.. Having a blast reading all the posts!!!!
If you promise not to tell anyone else…..I still have a flip phone.
PS: I HATE my iphone. Maybe we can switch.
I’ve got an Ipad for on the go, I don’t want to carry a phone that can’t get wet or get dropped off a building.
Tim Kish’s MySpace profile pic…
BREAKING: Jordan Esco has a direct line to Tim Kish…says he will be gone soon. Pic below:
Lol
You all have it wrong. My sources tell me he actually carries a bag phone!
Jerry Montgomery @OU_CoachJerryM 24m24 minutes ago
Man the phone is blowing up right now, I had a great talk with my boy from the (281) #LetsGo
Is he the only one on the defensive staff recruiting right now????
Maybe twitter wise it looks like it
That’s odd that he is using something popular with kids in high school to help recruit….novel idea
Monty is on another level..I’m not sure how active most coaches are on twitter…I’d guess that some don’t do it…some do it some…and some do it all of the time…I wouldn’t say all great recruiters are twittaholics either
Agreed. Just seems odd that there’s not much out there on Kish or Mike Stoops recruiting, obviously that doesn’t mean they aren’t. Just makes me curious of changes are coming is all
I don’t twit so I’m not sure..but how much did the other coaches twit in the first place…even from other schools
I’m not necessarily narrowing it down to twitter, just from what I gather from this site and such.
Kish just tweeted to a recruit “So whats your favorite Beatle song?”
Now I know why we just have one LB commit.
Tim Kish is old.
He just hit up a recruit on myspace
I saw that too! I posted his Myspace profile pic below..
Tom is his only friend.
And challenged him to a riveting game of Oregon Trail
Winner plays me in a rousing game of Leisure Suit Larry!
Tim Kish’s “little black book”:
No one else can get a signal….he’s got the cell towers all tied up.
Thanks for the laugh.
Someone saw him with his ear to the ground listening for recruits.
Are you sure he’s not just asleep?
We’re all going straight to hell.
Yea, I’m sure Kish is a great guy and we just bustin him for a little fun. I do wish him the best and do feel he is good but it just didn’t happen for him here. That happens in life.
Yep, it’s a business and they know it going in.
Meanwhile back at the ranch, Money, BB, & Gundy are on the trail herding all of the 5*’s to Norman.
Probably a good coach, but a terrible recruiter. I wish him the best too, as long as the best isn’t in Norman, Ok.
I hear he’s looking for coaching jobs in NE Oklahoma. Some town call Miami. Heard he could help those boys.
LOL! That’s probably true! Hittin’ the JUCO ranks. At least I could communicate my displeasure w/him directly!
Apparently, he’s the only one that can.
We don’t have enough scollies for the rest of them to recruit.
Please someone explain why we are not going after Calncy Pendergast? He was on the coaching staff as GA/TE coach back in ’93. He has loads of experience in the NFL and was the DC for USC in 2013. Reports were going around stating he was interviewing for the position at LSU and now new reports are believe him to be in the running for the position at WSU. He could certainly help our a DBs.

Welcome to the Football Brainiacs, Kanye West.
Thanks McGoats, but seriously whats up with this Pendergast guy huuuuuuuh?
Apparently we don’t have a defensive coaching position available for him
Yet..?
wink
Bob probably told Kish to recruit his own replacement.
So he’s looking at safety coaches?
Looking on Craig’s list
Talk about job security for Kish.
This shouldn’t take long.
Oh my gawd…
Some of us think that Bob is going to wait until after signing day to announce defensive coaching changes. Of course that is all speculation. They might be talking to Pendergrast or other defensive coaches but no one knows. Maybe all this talk about Offensive coaches they are actually talking to defensive coaches to throw us off.
Well…Frost was a co-defensive coordinator in 2007 at Northern Iowa. Lol
are we assuming misdirection? that would be first for this team in awhile 🙂
Are you a Motherf***ing monster?
LOLOL!
Don’t think I’m not proud of that one! I’m older then Kish- and I’ve got the CD in my car. Nickie Minaj sounds like a 12 year old Filipino on that song!
That phrase could be Kish’s pump-up mantra on the way to visit recruits.
Go Jerry Go!
The daily news thread tomorrow will consist of nothing but Montys Twitter feed and reactions on Twitter.
Sounds good to me!
You giving K ideas again
Jerry Montgomery @OU_CoachJerryM 4m4 minutes ago
I just got off the phone with one of the greatest of all time (804) #keepitRollin
Great state of Virginia.
In related news Tim Kish has been spotted at the local zoo yelling “Mike Mike Mike Guess what day it is?” to the napping camels
Shouldn’t they both be out seeking job interviews?
That’s why he was calling for Mike, to let him know it was Wednesday and they need to get to interviewing.
you’re killing me
LOL, Thats some good shadt right there!!
Solid gold
Jerry Montgomery @OU_CoachJerryM 4s4 seconds ago
I had another great visit with my boy from the (316) #SoonerNation
Who’s left in Kansas?
He’s trying to get Charlie Weis to play as the entire defensive line.
2016 Lawrence (KS) DE @amani_bledsoe
He’s recruiting for Lon now
Lon’s doing a damn fine job on his own.
moonlightin
Lol that was a good one
Deano ……..just gave his 2 cents on the speculation. That will be about 5mins I will never get back.
Can’t believe your gave your 5 away in the first place..come here for all of your sooner football needs
Who’s he laying odds on?
Cumbie….without a side of Frost.
Well……..Dean’s never wrong. :-/
Book it
Lol….never!
Dean who?
The one and only Deano Blev.
Deano Blev who?
Exactly
Dean Oblevinous
So, been out and about this evening and have missed what’s shakin’- seeing a few copy/pastes of Monty’s tweets. Anyone care to summarize his progress this evening?
Kish’s roast is going well.
yeah, tried to avoid wading through that
You shouldn’t avoid it. There’s some solid gold stuff in there…
OK, I’ll skim it…
I avoided that too.
I’ve been taking in ‘Flying Five Finger One Armed Eight Pole Shaolin Exploding Death Touch Thursdays’ on El Rey.
Were you able to master it?
The White Lotus’ vital nerve was in his right hand, that was why he was so difficult to kill.
Shoulda just kicked him in the yambag. Pretty sure that’s what ended the Samurai’s reign instead of gun powder.
I was entertained by the White Lotus and his ultimate demise.
Is that when you sprung some drunken monkey on him?
Do you get the El Rey channel?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDP1R1izTwc
He doesn’t have good service right now. Give him a minute. #jokes
Monty is auto dialing every recruit in the country while everybody else is at home on their couches staring at their bank accounts. That’s pretty much it.
Jerry Montgomery @OU_CoachJerryM 1m1 minute ago
I just got off the phone with my boy from the (225) #BurningTheMidnightOil
While the other coaches are all safe n sound asleep in their beds.
baton rouge!
He either is talking to a recruit or is trying to get some good boudin.
That doesn’t sound bad right now.
nope, got to get warm so my mud bugs can get their fun going on.
Or a big order of crawfish étouffée
NO WE’RE TALKIN!
I can eat my weight in Cajun… Anything with crawfish. Gumbo. Yum. I am friggin hungry now
Me too. My wife’s gumbo can go up against anybody’s and she’s a damn Buckeye.
When you get time you gotta run through this thread from early evening on. It’s pure gold.
Oh my gosh appearantly my first response is getting approved! Lol. Does that make ne on probation or something?
Must be that incident from “The Twelth Man” has caught up to you.
Effin beer gut… Or that incident with me & the bicycle police in College Station?
Or that incident on CRFF.
That “one incident” or 12…. Lol
It was like the Scutt Farkus Affair.
People are so sensitive & then they answer back with p*rn
Banned for life.
You get banned by beer gut? Or just me & sooner gone east?
He never banned me, but he did quit talking to me after I called his website http://www.ihearcrickets.com.
I am just special I guess. Sigh.
You and Esco
Nah. There were more… Just lead the way. This thread is hilarious!!! I haven’t laughed this hard in a month
I think I must have been hiding in the smoke, never got nailed.
He’s a very sensitive beer gut… Lol. I got banned for asking the score. I was being serious too!
All those priceless one man threads on the 12th Man…
…Pass incomplete
…Interception
…halftime
I ever send you the screen shot of the actual A&M foitball dept tweet that said something like ” and tge Aggies run out of time, falling to ______ (I don’t remember who) 54-30 (or something blowout)… Lmao. Aggies.
I must see that!
Beer gut blocked me on google +
That’s too funny. What was your offense?
I brought up 77-0
He’s a special breed of aggy
Ok. So back to Kish. Can we get him canned or not?
We’ve already canned him, just waiting on the University to carry out the order.
Good. He’s been killing me since I don’t remember when
He already gave Bob his two week notice. I got him a door greeter job at Walmart.
“Tim….please collect the carts from the parking lot. Tim…….please collect the carts.”
For the win!!
Lol. That might be too much responsibility
Can’t go wrong either way.
Translation. ….. red stick. I knew taking french would pay off someday.
Is it me or is OU waiting until Monday afternoon to announce the hire (in hopes of getting free pub during the title game)? I’m satisfied with the Toledo coach (Candle) as OC and Cumbie as the QB/WR coach. I’m praying the Leavitt hire eventually happens as it is long overdue. Curious whether Bob will really consider promoting a current GA to DB coach (Viney).
I hope they wait till after Monday to interview Frost
Viney would be an up grade on the recruiting front…he is a younger guy that the recruits like…he has a cali connection that brought our fresno guys in…whether Bob would consider it I have no Idea since I don’t know how good a coach he is
If we contact Frost from Oregon before the game espn would paint it in a negative light rather than giving us a boost since we are in the wrong conference. Hopefully we wait until the game is over if that is the route we are going…on the other hand…what’s to think that Frost might reach out to us
I think they’re waiting til monday so their changes don’t make waves. The defense moves are key and if nothing bigger is going on then there could be a negative view on the hires.
Scott frost would be a huge move but they don’t need momentum with offensive recruits Murray is the only guy left that we want to make a good impression on. And I think it’s easy to see why they made the changes on offense already, 5 of the 6 early enrolees are on offense. And the guys they’re waiting on are linemen and a full back.
Dont think Boren would allow Leavitt on the campus, imho
Some resemblance to…….Kish…..no?
Man, y’all are too funny. Reading through the comments was making my sides hurt.
Isn’t it past your bedtime young lady? 🙂
Up all night!
Atta girl!
Man tcu likes to take a&m cast offs. Kenny hill transferring.
Good Morning.
Tuesday, Jan. 13 should be the day that Frost will become OU OC.
Goodmorning, that evening conversation was pretty stand-up comedy, Brainiac supporters. Great work from D lee to get all that Montgomery work up.
