Will OU Coaching Changes Impact Recruiting?

Image via @KippLAdams

I’m sure in the midst of all this chaos, this is a question many of you are curious about. In talking to some folks, I do not believe the changes we are anticipating will have any effect on the current status of the recruits.

I spoke to PJ Mbanasor the other night while he was away at the Semper Fi bowl. And he let me know that not only is he solid to OU regardless of changes, but he also said “I’ve spoken to the guys here (Marquise Overton, Will Sunderland, and John Humphrey) and we’ve all come together as a group and agreed we are solid to Oklahoma no matter what.”

I also asked Mbanasor which two coaches were most instrumental in his recruitment to OU and he said, “Viney and Montgomery.” So he doesn’t seem particularly tied to any of the coaches we expect to be leaving.

I also spoke at great length to Kahlil Haughton. While he did state that his primary recruiters were Jay Boulware and Mike Stoops, he made it clear to me that his commitment “was never about the coaches…I just like the University of Oklahoma.” I didn’t get the impression there was any wavering at all.

Most of the remaining recruits in this class are offensive and defensive line recruits and neither Bill Bedenbaugh or Jerry Montgomery are going anywhere, so we see no cause for concern. And as most of you know, the lone linebacker commit, Ricky DeBerry, was recruited by Montgomery so we don’t see anything changing there either.

Again, for the recruits that are currently committed, I really don’t feel any of the changes we anticipate will have an effect on their commitment to Oklahoma.

What about Austin Seibert, Super K? He seems very pro-Oklahoma, but was Boulware his recruiter? He is often overlooked in our 2015 class but he is every bit as important, IMO. I dont know if we have had a kicker with his leg and talent in Norman for a very long time, if ever. I hope he stays.

    • Daryl says:

I think the fact that we offered a kicker a full scholly as opposed to doing the preferred walk-on treatment will keep him around.

    • OUWade says:

I’m not positive, but I’m not sure how much “coaching” a kicker really receives with or without a special teams coach, so I’m not sure that the coaching relationship is really all that primary for Seibert

      • blaster1371 says:

Good point. I think the serious and talented kickers go to several camps to get thier technique worked out. I know this kid has a boomer of a leg but I have not looked into his accuracy or how many game winners he has (speaks something to how he would handle pressure).

    • kt-raida says:

He starts day 1. He’s a Sooner and i believe he will be the best kicker OU has ever had.

  • ellisbr says:

what are the chances of getting Doug Meacham? Seems like he could be a good fit at OU but is it realisitic?

  • LXXIV says:

Good point. This kid is terrific and does it all, place kicking and punting and like F1 said, we haven’ had one like him in a while.

  • F1at1ined says:

It may just be because he is standing next to Overton, but Humphrey looks so tiny and frail. Just look at PJ on the other end, who might be a CB marking a WR like Humphrey. It’s bizarre lol. Still, I know smaller guys can be crazy tough to cover and if he becomes a new Jalen Saunders, I’ll take it haha.

  • bjwalker82 says:

Honestly? We should care more about getting the right coaches on staff.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

I see you all bring up Coach Viney, I don’t know much about him other than he seems to have a positive sense with the players. Can you tell us about him?

    • Super K says:

He is a defensive back’s GA. And yes, he is well liked by recruits and current players. Played at UCLA and seems to be doing a great job as a GA at OU.

      • blaster1371 says:

What are the chances he becomes part of the regular staff? I read somewhere that he was the “real” coach for the DBs and Wright was just the face.

        • Lane Gilstrap says:

If he was the “real coach” then why wouldn’t you want him gone?

          • blaster1371 says:

i thought about that as well. I am not sure how MS ran/runs his meetings with the coaches. I have seen people in leadership positions squash the talent, production and ingenuity of the people below them.

DeJuan Miller is lighting up Coach Norvell on Twitter.

    • Zack says:

Link or screen shot? I don’t see any posts since 12/4

      • bjwalker82 says:

        @D_Miller24 ?? Should be there.

I can’t link or screen shot here unfortunately.

        • bjwalker82 says:

@D_Miller24: Jay taught me a lot about being a sound receiver and how to
compete consistently, but to keep it 100 bc I wasn’t one of his “guys”
          he tended

          • bjwalker82 says:

@D_Miller24: To give more chances to other players in games and off the
field. if I dropped a couple passes I’d be benched but if one of his
            favorites

          • bjwalker82 says:

@D_Miller24: Dropped a couple or even more they NEVER came out. But it
is what it is, favoritism at it’s fullest. Can’t say I’m surprised he
            got the axe

          • bjwalker82 says:

@D_Miller24: No fabrication, all truth. This the same coach who didn’t
even say sh1t to my mother at my last banquet for Oklahoma in ’11

          • bjwalker82 says:

@D_Miller24: And you already know he spoke to everyone else’s parents.
Especially his “guys” parents. Been havin this on my mind for a minute
            now.

            @D_Miller24: That’s why I respect coaches like @KyleFloodRU and
@CoachSumlin bc they had genuine respect for my family and wasn’t fake
            towards them.

          • Travis Coyle says:

My 3 year old daughter sings me this song and it goes like this, Let it GO let it Go! Lol, miller has been waiting years for this. What a jerk.

          • Easton says:

This is the disease of every coach, that every coach has to fight off: favoritism.

          • Easton says:

            Wow. I feel ya Dejuan.

      • bjwalker82 says:

I have posted the whole thing but it is pending Brainiac approval.

…Which has apparently been denied. So for some reason the post is being censored.

        • Zack says:

I see them now. For some reason my phone wouldn’t load his page at first but that’s an opinion I’ve wanted to see. If someone felt put off by norvell.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

What about JH? I’m sure being the boss’s son in law gives you a certain amount of protection and all that, but are they going to pretend the passing game’s struggles were all because of WR’s? Please someone tell me that isn’t the case.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

So Humphrey was not so close with Norvell that he would look around now?

    • Doobie74OU says:

I think the only way that bites OU is if one of his other Finalists like a Notre Dame ends up hiring Norvell. There is a lot of WR jobs out there right now so hopefully wherever JV ends up it is not a place Humphrey would be interested in playing for. I think he is a solid OU guy at this point!

    • Travis Coyle says:

plus he only has like 5 days to look in the dead period. Since he has to be here by Friday.

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

Is it true Sumlin/Chavis contacted DeBerry about doing an in-home visit? Wouldn’t be surprised if they pull some “negative recruiting” against OU during their visit

Ex. “They’re blowing up their whole coaching staff. We’ve got a proven guy (Chavis), SEC, yada yada yada.”

    • Sam Philbeck says:

Montgomery is the guy who recruited DeBerry and he isn’t going anywhere. He was one of the three assistants they mentioned was safe and I have to imagine that as long as Montgomery is still here everything should be okay.

    • Zack says:

I can’t worry too much about a&m yet. They weren’t even in the top 3 so they would have to do some serious work to get ahead of everyone else.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

I seen Humphrey tweeted Dede Westbrook he is headed to OU on Friday. Friday is the last day to register before classes begin

  • lovethemsooners says:

The A&M site on 247 is reporting that they will have an in-home visit with Deberry in a couple weeks. Anyone confirm this?

  • bjwalker82 says:

    Please not Darrell Wyatt.

  • CastorTroyBoy says:

With regards to Norvell, I told you guys and gals about former players already ….You should have seen this coming…

  • CastorTroyBoy says:

When you cannot get KD Cannon after the guy visited like 10 some times…! The blame has to fall somewhere…

  • CastorTroyBoy says:

Sometimes a QB, WR, OL, and coaches are a byproduct of the offense they
put on the field. At some point you have to have some substance. I have
seen plenty of bowl teams form teams that come out of nowhere with a
high flying offense go versus teams that are from the traditional teams
and those offenses get destroyed. Teams are 56-10 scores like that. I
know it has been the other way around on occasion. But a team like
Stanford for instance, they play a traditional pro style offense, and a basic front on defense and they have beaten Oregon and their Heisman winning, high flying offense 2-3 yrs! Look at the old michigan teams before Rich Rodriguez was there…They were basic pro-style yet no one questions the WR’s that have played in the NFL. Michigan has like 10 Wr starting on NFL teams folks. That was all before and during when we were in the spread in 1999! How does Michigan produce WR’s to the pros yet are “famous Spread”, meerkat, Hurry up, cannot produce one starting WR in the NFL. Blame talent? Yes. Blame Coaching? Yes. But Blame the offense we run too! None of Our Heisman or All American- QB’s are doing in the NFL folks….Make excuses about injuries etc…all you want but ask the scouts. Nfl Pro personnel people frown upon people from spread programs.

Hey Super K or anyone for that matter, we have been looking at how coaches leaving may affect recruiting, but was wondering if there are any COACHING HIRES that may help recruiting? Possible convincing somebody to flip or commit based on a really good hire!!!

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Get Spavital from aTm will help in getting Kyler Murray

      • ruasoonerfan2 says:

Read somewhere yesterday that Murray will be in Norman today. Any truth in this or just rumors.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

No idea, but if he is then OU really does have a shot at him.

        • Doobie74OU says:

Hope he doesn’t get lost in the shuffle in Norman today! May be multiple people cleaning out their offices. Hope Bob takes the lead if he is there today so he knows he is talking to somebody that will be there tomorrow!

    • Doobie74OU says:

I definitely hear what your saying, but I think it all about commitment to a style and not half stepping your way through the year! Oregon just plastered a pretty good Florida State team that runs a more traditional style but even if they had lost they would still be a spread team next year. Cause that is who they are. OU HAS NO CLUE WHO THEY ARE!!! OU says they want to be a spread read option team but through the first 6 games of the year the QB had like 12 carries. I want them to commit to an offensive identity, recruit guys to play in it, stick with it, and perfect it, and return to dominance! You can’t go changing things every year and expect to keep improving! P.S. I like it when you stay on point and take a little of the Hateraid out of your posts because you make a lot of good points but it is difficult to find them amongst some of the derogatory comments. We are all frustrated with OU right now and we all just want them to get this thing turned around!

      • ruasoonerfan2 says:

        This I agree with totally

Doobie I appreciate you being forthright..And I apologize about our last convo…I’m not in a sense mean-spirited…

        • Doobie74OU says:

Like I said man you are all good to me, I LOVE THE PASSION YOU ODVIOUSLY HAVE ABOUT FOOTBALL. I just got enough “negative Nancy” in my life! LOL! I love to read about people wanting to make OU better and the ideas they have to do that, Just can’t read about how bad OU sucks all the time without getting frustrated or even angry. We are all just looking for better and brighter days! I apologize too for calling you a troll. I honestly don’t believe it anymore. I have wadded through most of your posts and I think you got a lot of valid points just disagree with the delivery sometimes, but then again my wife says when I watch a OU game I “deliver” some pretty unruly, discouraging, foul comments at my TV from time to time! LOL! As I said I LOVE YOUR PASSION & I SHARE IT!!!!

    • Doobie74OU says:

Tim Tebow won a NC but sucked as a pro! Griffen from Baylor beat OU as a Heisman winner and lost his job to Colt McCoy this year! Alabama hasn’t had a QB in the pros since I don’t know when if ever but they have been in the championship hunt for the past decade. Putting players in the NFL is wonderful and looks good to recruits I agree but of all the starting QBs in the NFL this year I think only 2 had championships (Newton & Sanchez) but neither of those are anywhere near the top 10 in QB ranks. I will take consistent excellence at OU like Alabama over having a NFL QB any day! OU will continue to do better as we put more OL and DL in the NFL. If we stay great on both lines we will be in a position to compete with anybody!

  • Steve Johns says:

K: Can you guys include a “hide/block” option?

  • CastorTroyBoy says:

I’m not trolling anything. I like my Oklahoma teams to have a “traditional sense” to them. I see what other programs who are traditional are doing and wonder why we have gone so much away from what made us great. WE are not Houston, Texas Tech, Baylor, WE ARE OKLAHOMA! That used to to stand for something…! What does this program stand for? We’ll we are going to run the ole’ kentucky spread because it gave me fits as a coord.? Did everyone start using the wishbone because Switzer scored Half a hundred on them??No. We cannot be reactionary…We have to create an offense that the kids want to play in that will set them up for the pro game. We don’t have a Florida(great weather) or Usc(Hollywood) to attract recruits. What we could have is an offense that continually meets the demands that the recruits want so they have the skills that prepare them for the pros….

  • Jordan Esco says:

    Castor,

If you’re looking to talk down to people and/or call people names, there are plenty of other OU forums where that stuff is welcome and common place.

This is not one of them.

You will not be warned again.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

      AMEN!

  • SoonerFan11 says:

Thanks for the update….. It will be interesting to see who Bob brings to coach these boys up…

  • SamSooner says:

As far as the coaching changes, here is my suggestion to Bob: hire for the problem(s) you’re trying to solve. If it’s player development: hire someone who can develop players. If it’s recruiting: hire great recruiters. If it’s offense: hire a offensive genius.

Just hire the person who can fix the problem you’re trying to solve.

    • Steve Johns says:

I’d imagine he’s already thought of the problem solving angle and will hire people that wear all the hats you mentioned. That’s what he did with Coach B and Monty.

  • Kevin says:

Last year there was a commit list with links to profiles of each recruit and TFB’s proprietary rating system. Any chance of that happening for this year’s class?

  • Michael Darling says:

Glad to see the comment about Deberry. Aggie friends are telling me he’s still listening to aTm after the Chavis hire.

  • Boomer4life says:

So Jordan, what are the odds that BS press conference tomorrow are to step down? Hearing it may be a possibility.

    • eastoksooner says:

Naw, he has been recruiting way too hard to step down now.

      • OU Boomer says:

Well, it certainly isn’t his style to hold a presser to “fire” coaches. And I can hardly imagine he came back early from a vacation to meet with Boren and then have his normal EOY press conference. I think it is a very real possibility that he is stepping down tomorrow. I am not upset about it as I think he has coached his best football in the past, but timing is really not good 1 month from NSD.

        • eastoksooner says:

Maybe so, you definitely could be right but I think everyone is upset that he is not available and addressing the issues within the program. I think he called everyone together so he can lay out his plan and soothe some tempers. I also think his best days are behind him and I would not be heartbroken if he stepped down.

  • RBear says:

Ahhh… it’s a beautiful morning; CTB has been banned and later on, Bob will clear the air- should make for an interesting day.
