Following the loss of Anthony Wheeler on Friday, there have been some requests for a breakdown of where OU stands now in this 2015 class with regards to other linebacker targets.
As far as I’m concerned, if they’re going to continue to run a 3-4 scheme, they shouldn’t be taken any less than four LBs in this class. Maybe three if the overall numbers hamstring you, but that would be the bare minimum. But we’re obviously very late in the process and things are looking somewhat suspect with just one LB currently in the fold. Admittedly one with a super high ceiling, but still just one nonetheless.
We are exactly one month from National Signing Day and here is how things stand.
* Josh Smith 6’3″ 219 lbs – Currently committed to Vanderbilt, but has seen interest pick up considerably in recent months. Possesses legit size and athelticism. If he’s not already at the top of OU’s board, he should be. I’d like to believe in OU’s chances here if for no other reason they’re OU and it’s Vandy.
* Arthur McGinnis 6’3″ 228 lbs – Maybe not drawing the kind of interest one might expect for a NOLA kid, but still has a pretty impressive offer list. OU should have a very good shot here, but McGinnis has scheduled trip to Norman multiple times previously yet never been actually to make one.
* Anthony McKee 6’2″ 195 lbs – This one seems to change by the month. At one point OU was though to be way out in front, only to presumably fall back to the back. The assumption being now that it’s a battle between OU and Michigan State. Don’t love the idea that MSU is reportedly looking at him as a safety, considering OU already has too many undersized guys playing at LB. Quiet kid, difficult to truly know where OU stands.
* John Houston 6’4″ 207 lbs – One of, if not the, top ranked LBs in the country. Has talked about having interest in OU, even scheduled an official visit at one point but didn’t wind up making the trip, although he may reschedule that visit. Some people would lead you to believe OU has a shot here. I am not one of them. To me, this is a pipe dream. I don’t see him leaving the west coast.
* Fotu Leitao 6’0″ 195 lbs – This may or may not be just an excuse to post this kid’s highlight tape again. And I say that because if he is a take for OU, I would have to believe it’d be as a safety, not LB. But he’s listed as a LB by most services, so I figured if I didn’t list him here somebody would ask.
As you can see, if they’re going to take four LBs in this class, as I feel they need to, then odds are they’re going to have to make some more offers. Or I suppose they could try and flip a kid or two who are currently committed elsewhere. But as things stand today, given their current offers, I’d have a hard time getting them to the necessary four.
– UPDATE: I’ve already received some questions about it on Twitter once the story posted, and I see at least one comment about it below as I’m typing this. The only reason I didn’t list Dwaine Thomas was because unlike the others above, he doesn’t currently have an OU offer. Although, as TFB told you recently, with Bob Stoops taking interest, we expect it should just be a matter of time before that changes. So consider Thomas a viable and deserving addition to the guys already listed above.

Good assessment, Jordan. I haven’t been overly concerned about LB until now. What you’re saying makes a lot of sense.
Losing Wheeler, whether you think he is worthy of his ranking or not, really hurts. Gotta think the staff counted on having him in the fold.
I really like the Smith kid. And maybe a new coach could bring a kid with him too.
I hope OU still keeps up with Wheeler. His announcement ceremony did not show a kid happy and excited to be going to Texass.
blaster…………wheeler’s parents want him in Austin…lots of pressure on the kid to stay in state…forget about him coming to Norman…………
Dwaine Thomas?
YES!! Cannot forget about him. Think he and Smith might be OUr best shots at present. Need to get Monty down to Louisiana next as Thomas and McGinnis should be priorities. Those 3 + DeBerry would be a great LB class.
Thomas is a freaking stud. Has the aggressiveness, speed, instinct that makes for a good linebacker.
some people have OU moving Hatari Byrd and Ahmad Thomas to LB roles and inserting Sutherland and another 2015 signee ( Reid –if OU gets him) as safeties….. I agree with you–LBs are needed……………
Thomas, esp. Going to be a very interesting spring.
Clearly, Thomas played his way into a back up LB. But, it may become a home for him ala Lewis baker.
Houston made an official for Bedlam.
Flip Griffin from Wisconsin and Smith from Vandy. Then go after McGinnis & Houston. Or, pull in Whitfield as the 4th LB.
Thank you Striker for coming back.
Houston, Thomas, McGinnis, DeBerry. Sounds good to me. Patience
BOOMER SOONER
Maybe we need to rethink the 3-4? Are we running just for Striker? Has he been enough of a difference-maker to justify that?
Someone raised that question on another board, and I found it a valid ask.
I think we should stick with the 3-4, but use it properly, Dick Lebeau style. We need to play our CBs tight, and send a fifth rusher from a different position every other down if not every down. Really, whatever scheme we run, we need to be much more aggressive and attacking.
That’s how it works in theory. I’m a little more concerned about our corner play than the backer situation. Even the best coach would be hesitant to turn the backers loose knowing his corners were going to get smoked.
You mean corner? Sanchez was pretty good this year.
Smith, Whitfield also forgot about them
Houston would be awesome but yes a pipe dream
Depends on DC and personnel, recruits Which defense 4-3, 3-4 or 4-2-5
Obviously the status with M. Stoops needs to be clarified as wasnt he the one to move us to the 3-4? Curious as to how many D recruits could now waiver with this potential change in DC?
Goodness that Leitao film. How can a mama stay in the stands after seeing her boy walloped like that? They’ll have a penalty named after him in 5 years for hitting without concern for the presence of women and children.
And I must say, Josh Smith has a nice smile. We should recruit him just to put him in front of a camera. No rainbow.
He hits up high and doesn’t wrap up. While he’s obviously the best athlete on the field, he also is the one of the biggest which concerns me if he’s 6’0 190 pounds. He just won’t be able to take down players in college like he is in high school. The hair is cool though.
Marvelous hair. I would say, first day full pads, during the Okie Drill put him opposite Perine. See if he comes in all wild and head first like he does then.
Why would you want to see a freshman killed the first day of
That’s a valid point. You know you have a beast in the backfield when hitting him is a life threatening event. What was I thinking? 🙂
Perine is shorter than him by an inch but out weighs him by 50 pounds and I believe is much faster.
…but his hair ain’t nearly as marvelous. Ha-rumph.
How many LB’s would you say they need to take if going back to the 4 man front?
The same number…3-4 at least. We don’t have hardly any, and IF Shannon plays next year, he and Bond will use up their eligibility next year. We simply do not have enough quality LBs on the roster. This is just one of the aspects of poor recruiting by this staff. At pur position of greatest need, we seem to have failed to make that priority one. Unacceptable.
Finish this class strong and we will be good. Patience
My patience expired about 5 games ago. I’m ready for and embracing changes, the sooner the better. It may be too late for this year but next year, we’ll be better off with top notch recruiters.
Any word on Shannon?
I got nothing for you (not that you should expect me to have anything anyway), but I’m also interested to hear about Curtis Bolton’s development. If his Twitter account is any indication, he’s got the attitude and has put in some good work with Schmidtty.
Seems like Stoops said he wouldn’t be able to rejoin until may 15th…looks like it was an academic calendar year suspension which is what I thought it was gonna be
Thanks, couldn’t remember when it ended. Just curious as to whether or not he has been heard from on social media and if it looks promising.
The only things I’ve seen is him trying to recruit Wheeler
Why Ed Orgeron is not on this staff in some capacity is beyond me. Hell of a coach, and an even better recruiter. Oh, and he’s available.
Yeah I mentioned him yesterday. Great defensive mind and monster recruiter. He has been sitting at home all year, doing nothing.
Kids seem to like and play hard for him too
I have had that same conversation twice. I think he would fit here like a glove. He and mont and bed would own the line lb recruiting.
FYI, going to be interested in watching the Semper Fi game tonite. No LBs on OU’s board but in addition to Humphrey, PJ, Overton and Sunderland, all of whom are reportedly showing great in practices, John Kolar QB from Norman North, former commit/UT commit Jamile Johnson and Conner Lanfear all on the West team.
I guess we can see if we’re missing out at all on JJ
Really never watched his tape but seems most weren’t upset he flipped to texass. But, some of these same people weren’t high on Sunderland, either, and he has reportedly been tearing it up in these practices, good speed and ‘brings the wood’ when he arrives.
Are there any sleeper lb that we have not offered ?
What about in-state talent? Get some backers in the mold of Lehman and Calmus. Some guys who might have a little pride about playing for OU. I’m thinking Rylee Simon (Vian), Adam Nicholas (Ponca City), Gunner Green, or Michael Anderson (both from Owasso).
Calmus and Lehman weren’t just local kids, they were “good” local kids. I don’t think the kids you named fit that.
I understand what your saying and I agree they were amazing players. But what I’m talking about is the heart and pride to play at OU. Going out and getting guys who are top ten position players is great, but I want someone whose going to fight that little bit harder when push comes to shove. The last few years I’ve seen a lot of quit and that is just unacceptable.
Another group of Selmon brothers would be great! Sooner Pride down deep.
By the way, all those kids I listed were top 100 in OK. Just saying they are decent and may not be getting the looks especially a guy like Simon who plays 2A, but he flies and plays hard.
I would take Anderson. Good size. Smart kid. So long as we stop playing safeties and DEs out of position.
I’d think he’d be a good OLB in the current 3-4, but could bulk up if we go to a 4-3 or more hopefully a 4-2.
Curious, why are some on this board wishing for a 4-2. TCU ran this when they were getting killed. Now they have a winning year and it’s all the 4-2. Any defense will work if there is a solid game play, adjustments, and talent.
I was just giving examples of two Ds that have 4 up front. As long as the D works I could care less what we use. Hell I’d be all for a 46 Defense if it worked. Lol
Wasn’t bashing ya. Just seen this along with 4-3 and it doesn’t matter if we get new DC as he will run his D.
Fotu reminds me of striker. Damn that kid can hit.
Also, Jordan, it’s being reported DeBerry has agreed to A&M doing an ‘in home’ with him after the dead period ends 1/15. Hope that relationship with Monty is very strong. Would really hate to lose him.
Someone please clarify the reasoning for us changing to a 3-4 defensive scheme in the first place. Especially if we don’t have the personnel for it.
We didn’t have enough d line players to play a 4 man front.
Thanks
Looks like A&M is set for an in home with Deberry. Their staff writers think they have a legit shot to flip him, what is your guy’s feeling on that?
Meh. TAMU’s LB play is horrendous. They flipped Mastro from us and he managed a mere 26 tackles for nine games with seven starts.
But I’m sure a gAggie will tell you something different. “Oh, man. We gon beh tho awe-thum next year, you juth wait.”
if they indeed get an in-home, it’s the result of hiring the lsu dc which impressed deberry
Ah. Time will tell then.
How could they have set up an in-home visit with a recruit during the dead period?
Anymore smoke to the Kyler Murray rumor? Just saw one of my aggie friends post a story from 247 about Murray trying to get guys to atm.
It was a Saturdaydownsouth.com article rather…
With them waiting to offer thomas is it to just make it not so obvious that he was a back up plan? Or do they have to miss out on others first?
….the plan is to strike out on everyone, then hit thomas hard with the list that shows only his name on it……..
So you’re saying we have a plan?
Good point. Kish of death.
“Uh we’ll visit some other time”
I love it when a plan comes together! Wait…..what’s the plan again…….?
All mom’s get a limited edition Mary Kay basket.
Awsome!
One thing to pipedream about – if we hire new defensive coaches, we may be able to have a commit or two follow our new coach because the two of them have a Monty-esque relationship. Just a thought. I mean, no clue who on Vanderbilt is recruiting Smith hardest but if that coach becomes a Sooner, maybe Smith follows. We have seen it happen quite a bit, especially with a few of the QBs who just changed allegiances. Just one example using an existing known target. Imagine if we hire coaches from a Florida or Louisiana college. Could open up a slew of new options.
I know it’s highly highly unlikely but if somehow D.J. Durkin found his way to Norman as the DC, we will have nothing to worry about in regards to LB recruiting. Only reason I brought him up is because a LB from Georgia has said he will definitely be interested in the school that Durkin lands at.
I like the idea. He has the resume. Likes “attacking style” defenses.
About DeBerry agreeing to home visit=Always bad news about OU.
But it seems that agreeing to have another school come to your home, is not as bad as if DeBerry went to A&M.
Yeah, I would have liked for him to decline the home visit.
All good choices by the way, but who would we get as a DC or LB coach? Kish has been stagnant at best, and Mike may go to LSU (Not going to lose a lot of sleep over it if he does.) So that could go a long way in not only keeping Deberry, but also maybe snagging a few late LBs.
Question for TFB: Jeff Driskell (FL) gained his release to transfer. Does he have anything left?
I’m not the TFB, but he’s TERRIBLE and he always has been.
Does uncle Rico have any eligibility left?
It was a serious question. I kinda laughed as I typed, but really. I suppose you are still a Knight fan?
I think Driskill does have some talent just never had much of a chance at UF with different OC’s
I like knigh but I do think his time may be up. Except with norvell gone and is interviewing new oc candidates maybe knight will have some success again. But I want to see mayfield and hansen get a real shot
Yeah you’re right. May the most consistent man win.
He’d be a better choice than Driskell
He has one year left and doesn’t have to sit out a year since he graduated. He’s got talent, but he’s looking hard at Duke right now.
Thanks.
Welcome.
If this is talent, you can see why only Duke is interested.
Career stats;
328/552 = 59%
23 touchdowns, 20int
Just cause you have talent doesn’t mean you can use it.
Got to admit Dwaine Thomas is exciting to watch. May depend on what happens at LB and DC though if he comes or not.
While we have 1 LB committed, Bama has four. I think it is due to class need. USC has 1 LB as well. There are a lot of LB’s still on the OU roster. Why isn’t 1 LB good enough for this year? You don’t need a Qb or FB every recruiting cylce do we?
How many LB’s do we have on roster? We will need 8 to have a 2 deep running a 3/4 defense. Also need to account for injuries and such, I’d like to see 12 on the roster.
Okay. There are 12 LB’s. I excluded the seniors.
I know it depends on class need, definitely need some quality back ups and guys for special teams. Never coached past pee-wee level and never really thought about how many LB’s a college team needs. Most people on TFB are saying we need 4 in this class.
I understand some of the parts would be interchangeable so 12 may be too many, maybe not
Texas has five (5) LB’s committed in this class alone……………
Like I was surmising it’s according to need. USC has only 1!
So we’re looking at WKU’S OC Tyson Helton?
Where did you here this bjw
https://twitter.com/diegog20/status/551868712106475520
doesnt sound like a big named oc but have no clue what western kentucky produced on offense
May not be the guy they are looking at. Another report says Tex A+M OC. But he coached Joe Webb at UWK who passed for 2000 and ran for 1000 in a year.
Any source? Sounds good. The guy developed Joe Webb into a 2000 yd passer and 1000 yard runner. Also TE coach at UC under Tubberville.
Saw an article earlier today that said he was looking at becoming OC at either OU or UGA. WKU had top 10 offense in the nation this year. Don’t know how well he can recruit but he can coach
So apparently Jay Norvell has been fired…
https://twitter.com/rj_young/status/551891381887959041 yep
Will JH be the only survivor?
Not of our prayers are answered. Kidding I still love Heup as QB 2000
Bedenbaugh, Gundy, and Boulware are the only offensive coaches that need to stay. Norvell and Heupal need to go due to lack of consistency.
when posting rumors like this, it’s best to include a link or something to substantiate the claim- save us the time of asking the who, what, when, where and why’s please.
Look below.
how far down? I’ve been searching…
Right below
The Tyson Helton stuff? This could mean JH just as well couldn’t it?
i see it now… wow- the dominoes are beginning to fall
Refresh your page and you will see the twitter .
I missed this.
If this is true and Jay is gone and JH is not…”that’s not right…”
Except if the you believe 36 points a game were enough, the offensive scheme was approved by the HC, and the WR were more to blame than the QB’s.
I saw more bad passes then dropped ones…
Me too. I’m just saying what the reasoning could be.
Yep. I understood what you were saying…I was just countering that reasoning
Has this been confirmed?
Yes.
Good. He hasn’t done much in developing receivers. Josh needs to go too, or at the least demoted to QBs only.
https://twitter.com/bprzybylo/status/551893735886581760
Action better than inaction- how many more announcements are coming? O/U of 4 total.
Hey BJ, just for my future reference, how do you paste a twitter message like that?
Copy the link of the tweet and just paste it in your comment window.
So Norvell is out?
According to quite a few people.
Listening to the FootballScoop guys on the radio right now. They’ve said that within the football community, there’s plenty of coaches talking that Jay Spavital (or however you spell it) from aTm, could be coming to OU to call plays and QB’s. In that case, they don’t believe Heupel would leave OU but move to WR’s. AGAIN, this is just a couple of football guys talking. Nothing confirmed on that point.
Not sure how you can let Norvell go and keep JH. It’s as much JH fault as Norvell’s
Makes no sense that they would move JH to WRs…
Kinda what I was thinking but what do I know…
talking heads filling air
No he just need to go. He is married to Boren’s daughter tho, not that it should matter but it probably does.
No he isn’t.
I thought he was, isn’t there some connection to he and Boren? Or was that just rumor I heard elsewhere
Ok just saw above. My bad
his sister is married to Borens son
If Stoops can fire his brother. Boren can let his sister in-laws brother go.
Heupel does not need to be wr coach!!
I’m a JH fan, but I agree with that.
Just don’t see it. He’s a spread guy and we’re ostensibly trying to more of a power run and ZR offense. Don’t see how he fits that unless we’re willing to go back to that shotgun spread. I also don’t see how’d we’d get him from TAMU. He has a good thing going there with a lot of talent and we aren’t going to be able to outbid TAMU if they want to keep him.
Here we go. MS interviewing is confirmed, JN out. Who’s next?
Mediocrity is not an option.
Norvell out according to some reports. Changes are happening…..
Let’s see a few more names go before celebrating. Good start though.
OK, asked below but it got burried: O/U on total number of coaches let go @ 4?
I’ll say 3 more; BJW “retires” , Kish fired and MStoops “resigns” and takes another job
Not sure why LSU wants him but they can have him. If MStoops somehow stays then perhaps they can put him up in the box far from player interaction or influence.
Under. JH goes, Mike, and Norvell.
nm
Thinking JH stays in a different capacity.
towel boy?
HA.
Assistant to the nutrition lady.
HAHAHAHA.. I like it Ray.
snack hander-outer
Hope not
How about something administrative, football related, quality control.
playbook copier
No because he would only copy the pass plays, especially the bubble screens and wheel routes
He’s basically promoted as of now. He’s not going anywhere but wish BS would at least make him come down to the sidelines. He did well there as QB coach and could again become that in game mentor they need.
3 let go 1 retired!!
I said 4 right after bowl so even. Norvell, Kish, Wright and Boulware.
recruiting effect if true??
Dede Westbrook is already signed. You tell me..
i think he is in on more than just WRs
Norvell? Doubt it.
better
Depending on who they get to replace him. Could go up or down honestly.
My understanding from sources close to the program is that only Gundy, Montgomery and Bedenbaughhave firm job security right now #Sooners— Jason Kersey (@jasonkersey) January 5, 2015
Just the way it should be right now
Does that include B Stoops? 😉
BS is a great coach.
just going on semantics
semantics. Wish I could take a formal class on semantics.
Anyone still care about the Cowboy game?
Watching now
Viewing.
Catch the ball Baylor grad.
Yep.
On a side note..is Romo yelling ‘Oklahoma’ as an audible?
Sounds like it.
My old ears are hearing “Omaha”, like Peyton.
I heard Obama
This is funny!!!!!!!
I needed this!!!!
Now that Norvell has been given his pink slip, does DGB leave since they have such a tight relationship?
Prob going anyways
It’ll be an excuse. But cost him money if not a high draft pick.
It will almost certainly not cost him money. If he goes lower, he’ll still get to his second contract a year earlier. That will offset any loss.
You know kids don’t look that far ahead.
No, but his parents/coach/agent/consultant will.
I had doubts he would stay anyway. If he does stay I’ll be shocked.
maybe he’ll wait to see how things shake out- he has almost 2 weeks to make a decision
January 15th.
i think DGB had no chance to play @ mizz. had 10% to play for us. didnt work, he aint coming back IMO
Yeah, that was throwing out a prayer for him to be eligible this past season. Didn’t work, everyone moves on.
yeah transferring somewhere was his only shot
Oh man, DGB is long gone now. Norvell was his main recruiter.
Good riddance. I don’t want to see a woman beater wearing an OU jersey.
Here we go…
No, this will be my last comment about it today. I’m willing to give kids a second chance for a lot of things. Busting through a door and then dragging your girlfriend down the stairs by her hair isn’t one of them. That’s all.
Depends on the coach they bring in for WR’s in my opinion.
Maybe DGB made the decision, wanted a shake-up.
As I believe TFB have already said:
My understanding from sources close to the program is that only Gundy, Montgomery and Bedenbaughhave firm job security right now #Sooners— Jason Kersey (@jasonkersey) January 5, 2015
Are you using a computer or mobile device?
So over/under Dallas pisses this game away in the final minutes?
3. is that a valid answer?
Lol…dont know…lol
Are you wanting answers in a percentage form?
Yes please
50/50
fifty fifty. But the fumble, fumbled.
Can you believe that. Get on the ground and cover it up
Oh wow. Leon Lett is a coach for the Cowboys now.
60/40
I like 50/50. Either they will or they won’t. Like the weather report.
I believed norvell would be gone. I know heupel gets much of the blame but for whatever reason he and norvell haven’t done great together. And we know norvell isn’t missing on every recruit he brings in so it had to be some issue with his coaching and development.
Not sure if it would fly, but the Lion’s WR coach (Robert Prince) was the OC at Boise State as well as the WR coach a few years ago. Just sayin’.
So did Jordan fall asleep at the wheel? Does he have money on this game? I would have thought he’d be all over the reporting of this.
He’s working on it right now.
My sense is that he wants to put together something with fact and info worth reporting first.
Haha I wasn’t trying to insult him at all. Just teasing
I know, I know.
THE has reported it on Facebook though. They’re just relaying the Feldman report.
Bruce Feldman. Top Notch. Respected so much, thus the sources and info he gets. And, been doing this a looong time.
TFB not the. Darn autocorrect
That was the dumbest thing I have ever seen…just fall down stupid!!
Leon Lett moment.
I know right
Great moment.
Hey, we’re talking football here, enough of the Dallas Cowboy stuff 😉
Alright, alright.
Easy….
There’s a new thread up on coaching changes.
Humphrey stay firm with OU?
Calvin Johnson…
And that boys and girls is why I don’t gamble….lol
haha
What kind of offense does WKU run?
The lots of points type. All I got.
That’s my favorite type.
zr sprd option I think
If true (I was wondering), maybe we aren’t kicking the ZR to the curb just yet, and those of you that wanted somebody more proficient in it running things at OU, might just get your wish.
I know he’s a linebacker, but anyone else see Polamalu in Fotu Leitao?
Yes…just smaller…but yes. He seems like one of those guys where size won’t matter.
