2015 Recruiting: Moving Forward At LB (UPDATED)

Image of Josh Smith via 247 Sports

Following the loss of Anthony Wheeler on Friday, there have been some requests for a breakdown of where OU stands now in this 2015 class with regards to other linebacker targets.

As far as I’m concerned, if they’re going to continue to run a 3-4 scheme, they shouldn’t be taken any less than four LBs in this class. Maybe three if the overall numbers hamstring you, but that would be the bare minimum. But we’re obviously very late in the process and things are looking somewhat suspect with just one LB currently in the fold. Admittedly one with a super high ceiling, but still just one nonetheless.

We are exactly one month from National Signing Day and here is how things stand.

* Josh Smith 6’3″ 219 lbs – Currently committed to Vanderbilt, but has seen interest pick up considerably in recent months. Possesses legit size and athelticism. If he’s not already at the top of OU’s board, he should be. I’d like to believe in OU’s chances here if for no other reason they’re OU and it’s Vandy.

* Arthur McGinnis 6’3″ 228 lbs – Maybe not drawing the kind of interest one might expect for a NOLA kid, but still has a pretty impressive offer list. OU should have a very good shot here, but McGinnis has scheduled trip to Norman multiple times previously yet never been actually to make one.

* Anthony McKee 6’2″ 195 lbs – This one seems to change by the month. At one point OU was though to be way out in front, only to presumably fall back to the back. The assumption being now that it’s a battle between OU and Michigan State. Don’t love the idea that MSU is reportedly looking at him as a safety, considering OU already has too many undersized guys playing at LB. Quiet kid, difficult to truly know where OU stands.

* John Houston 6’4″ 207 lbs – One of, if not the, top ranked LBs in the country. Has talked about having interest in OU, even scheduled an official visit at one point but didn’t wind up making the trip, although he may reschedule that visit. Some people would lead you to believe OU has a shot here. I am not one of them. To me, this is a pipe dream. I don’t see him leaving the west coast.

* Fotu Leitao 6’0″ 195 lbs – This may or may not be just an excuse to post this kid’s highlight tape again. And I say that because if he is a take for OU, I would have to believe it’d be as a safety, not LB. But he’s listed as a LB by most services, so I figured if I didn’t list him here somebody would ask.

As you can see, if they’re going to take four LBs in this class, as I feel they need to, then odds are they’re going to have to make some more offers. Or I suppose they could try and flip a kid or two who are currently committed elsewhere. But as things stand today, given their current offers, I’d have a hard time getting them to the necessary four.

– UPDATE: I’ve already received some questions about it on Twitter once the story posted, and I see at least one comment about it below as I’m typing this. The only reason I didn’t list Dwaine Thomas was because unlike the others above, he doesn’t currently have an OU offer. Although, as TFB told you recently, with Bob Stoops taking interest, we expect it should just be a matter of time before that changes. So consider Thomas a viable and deserving addition to the guys already listed above.

Good assessment, Jordan. I haven’t been overly concerned about LB until now. What you’re saying makes a lot of sense.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Losing Wheeler, whether you think he is worthy of his ranking or not, really hurts. Gotta think the staff counted on having him in the fold.

I really like the Smith kid. And maybe a new coach could bring a kid with him too.

    • blaster1371 says:

I hope OU still keeps up with Wheeler. His announcement ceremony did not show a kid happy and excited to be going to Texass.

      • Stephen Dale says:

blaster…………wheeler’s parents want him in Austin…lots of pressure on the kid to stay in state…forget about him coming to Norman…………

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

    Dwaine Thomas?

    • hOUligan says:

YES!! Cannot forget about him. Think he and Smith might be OUr best shots at present. Need to get Monty down to Louisiana next as Thomas and McGinnis should be priorities. Those 3 + DeBerry would be a great LB class.

    • blaster1371 says:

Thomas is a freaking stud. Has the aggressiveness, speed, instinct that makes for a good linebacker.

  • Stephen Dale says:

some people have OU moving Hatari Byrd and Ahmad Thomas to LB roles and inserting Sutherland and another 2015 signee ( Reid –if OU gets him) as safeties….. I agree with you–LBs are needed……………

  • Cole says:

Houston made an official for Bedlam.

  • Boom says:

Flip Griffin from Wisconsin and Smith from Vandy. Then go after McGinnis & Houston. Or, pull in Whitfield as the 4th LB.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Thank you Striker for coming back.

  • ruasoonerfan2 says:

Houston, Thomas, McGinnis, DeBerry. Sounds good to me. Patience
    BOOMER SOONER

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Maybe we need to rethink the 3-4? Are we running just for Striker? Has he been enough of a difference-maker to justify that?

Someone raised that question on another board, and I found it a valid ask.

    • JB says:

I think we should stick with the 3-4, but use it properly, Dick Lebeau style. We need to play our CBs tight, and send a fifth rusher from a different position every other down if not every down. Really, whatever scheme we run, we need to be much more aggressive and attacking.

      • Sooner Ray says:

That’s how it works in theory. I’m a little more concerned about our corner play than the backer situation. Even the best coach would be hesitant to turn the backers loose knowing his corners were going to get smoked.

  • ruasoonerfan2 says:

Smith, Whitfield also forgot about them

  • Zack says:

Houston would be awesome but yes a pipe dream

  • ruasoonerfan2 says:

Depends on DC and personnel, recruits Which defense 4-3, 3-4 or 4-2-5

  • Michael Douglas says:

Obviously the status with M. Stoops needs to be clarified as wasnt he the one to move us to the 3-4? Curious as to how many D recruits could now waiver with this potential change in DC?

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Goodness that Leitao film. How can a mama stay in the stands after seeing her boy walloped like that? They’ll have a penalty named after him in 5 years for hitting without concern for the presence of women and children.

And I must say, Josh Smith has a nice smile. We should recruit him just to put him in front of a camera. No rainbow.

    • Stephen says:

He hits up high and doesn’t wrap up. While he’s obviously the best athlete on the field, he also is the one of the biggest which concerns me if he’s 6’0 190 pounds. He just won’t be able to take down players in college like he is in high school. The hair is cool though.

      • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Marvelous hair. I would say, first day full pads, during the Okie Drill put him opposite Perine. See if he comes in all wild and head first like he does then.

        • soonerbred4ever says:

Why would you want to see a freshman killed the first day of

          • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

That’s a valid point. You know you have a beast in the backfield when hitting him is a life threatening event. What was I thinking? 🙂

        • Stephen says:

Perine is shorter than him by an inch but out weighs him by 50 pounds and I believe is much faster.

  • Gary Jackson says:

How many LB’s would you say they need to take if going back to the 4 man front?

    • JB says:

The same number…3-4 at least. We don’t have hardly any, and IF Shannon plays next year, he and Bond will use up their eligibility next year. We simply do not have enough quality LBs on the roster. This is just one of the aspects of poor recruiting by this staff. At pur position of greatest need, we seem to have failed to make that priority one. Unacceptable.

      • ruasoonerfan2 says:

Finish this class strong and we will be good. Patience

        • JB says:

My patience expired about 5 games ago. I’m ready for and embracing changes, the sooner the better. It may be too late for this year but next year, we’ll be better off with top notch recruiters.

  • Sooner Ray says:

    Any word on Shannon?

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

I got nothing for you (not that you should expect me to have anything anyway), but I’m also interested to hear about Curtis Bolton’s development. If his Twitter account is any indication, he’s got the attitude and has put in some good work with Schmidtty.

    • JD says:

Seems like Stoops said he wouldn’t be able to rejoin until may 15th…looks like it was an academic calendar year suspension which is what I thought it was gonna be

      • Sooner Ray says:

Thanks, couldn’t remember when it ended. Just curious as to whether or not he has been heard from on social media and if it looks promising.

  • JB says:

Why Ed Orgeron is not on this staff in some capacity is beyond me. Hell of a coach, and an even better recruiter. Oh, and he’s available.

    • eastoksooner says:

Yeah I mentioned him yesterday. Great defensive mind and monster recruiter. He has been sitting at home all year, doing nothing.

    • brainpimp says:

I have had that same conversation twice. I think he would fit here like a glove. He and mont and bed would own the line lb recruiting.

  • hOUligan says:

FYI, going to be interested in watching the Semper Fi game tonite. No LBs on OU’s board but in addition to Humphrey, PJ, Overton and Sunderland, all of whom are reportedly showing great in practices, John Kolar QB from Norman North, former commit/UT commit Jamile Johnson and Conner Lanfear all on the West team.

    • Zack says:

I guess we can see if we’re missing out at all on JJ

      • hOUligan says:

Really never watched his tape but seems most weren’t upset he flipped to texass. But, some of these same people weren’t high on Sunderland, either, and he has reportedly been tearing it up in these practices, good speed and ‘brings the wood’ when he arrives.

  • Patvan says:

Are there any sleeper lb that we have not offered ?

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

What about in-state talent? Get some backers in the mold of Lehman and Calmus. Some guys who might have a little pride about playing for OU. I’m thinking Rylee Simon (Vian), Adam Nicholas (Ponca City), Gunner Green, or Michael Anderson (both from Owasso).

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Calmus and Lehman weren’t just local kids, they were “good” local kids. I don’t think the kids you named fit that.

      • Jonathan Taylor says:

I understand what your saying and I agree they were amazing players. But what I’m talking about is the heart and pride to play at OU. Going out and getting guys who are top ten position players is great, but I want someone whose going to fight that little bit harder when push comes to shove. The last few years I’ve seen a lot of quit and that is just unacceptable.

      • Jonathan Taylor says:

By the way, all those kids I listed were top 100 in OK. Just saying they are decent and may not be getting the looks especially a guy like Simon who plays 2A, but he flies and plays hard.

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

I would take Anderson. Good size. Smart kid. So long as we stop playing safeties and DEs out of position.

      • Jonathan Taylor says:

I’d think he’d be a good OLB in the current 3-4, but could bulk up if we go to a 4-3 or more hopefully a 4-2.

        • Boom says:

Curious, why are some on this board wishing for a 4-2. TCU ran this when they were getting killed. Now they have a winning year and it’s all the 4-2. Any defense will work if there is a solid game play, adjustments, and talent.

          • Jonathan Taylor says:

I was just giving examples of two Ds that have 4 up front. As long as the D works I could care less what we use. Hell I’d be all for a 46 Defense if it worked. Lol

          • Boom says:

Wasn’t bashing ya. Just seen this along with 4-3 and it doesn’t matter if we get new DC as he will run his D.

  • Andrew says:

Fotu reminds me of striker. Damn that kid can hit.

  • hOUligan says:

Also, Jordan, it’s being reported DeBerry has agreed to A&M doing an ‘in home’ with him after the dead period ends 1/15. Hope that relationship with Monty is very strong. Would really hate to lose him.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Someone please clarify the reasoning for us changing to a 3-4 defensive scheme in the first place. Especially if we don’t have the personnel for it.

  • bmrsnr says:

Looks like A&M is set for an in home with Deberry. Their staff writers think they have a legit shot to flip him, what is your guy’s feeling on that?

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Meh. TAMU’s LB play is horrendous. They flipped Mastro from us and he managed a mere 26 tackles for nine games with seven starts.

But I’m sure a gAggie will tell you something different. “Oh, man. We gon beh tho awe-thum next year, you juth wait.”

    • AlvinMack55 says:

How could they have set up an in-home visit with a recruit during the dead period?

  • Kelly Gurbcock says:

Anymore smoke to the Kyler Murray rumor? Just saw one of my aggie friends post a story from 247 about Murray trying to get guys to atm.

  • Zack says:

With them waiting to offer thomas is it to just make it not so obvious that he was a back up plan? Or do they have to miss out on others first?

  • F1at1ined says:

One thing to pipedream about – if we hire new defensive coaches, we may be able to have a commit or two follow our new coach because the two of them have a Monty-esque relationship. Just a thought. I mean, no clue who on Vanderbilt is recruiting Smith hardest but if that coach becomes a Sooner, maybe Smith follows. We have seen it happen quite a bit, especially with a few of the QBs who just changed allegiances. Just one example using an existing known target. Imagine if we hire coaches from a Florida or Louisiana college. Could open up a slew of new options.

    • AlvinMack55 says:

I know it’s highly highly unlikely but if somehow D.J. Durkin found his way to Norman as the DC, we will have nothing to worry about in regards to LB recruiting. Only reason I brought him up is because a LB from Georgia has said he will definitely be interested in the school that Durkin lands at.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

About DeBerry agreeing to home visit=Always bad news about OU.
But it seems that agreeing to have another school come to your home, is not as bad as if DeBerry went to A&M.

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

All good choices by the way, but who would we get as a DC or LB coach? Kish has been stagnant at best, and Mike may go to LSU (Not going to lose a lot of sleep over it if he does.) So that could go a long way in not only keeping Deberry, but also maybe snagging a few late LBs.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Question for TFB: Jeff Driskell (FL) gained his release to transfer. Does he have anything left?

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

Got to admit Dwaine Thomas is exciting to watch. May depend on what happens at LB and DC though if he comes or not.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

While we have 1 LB committed, Bama has four. I think it is due to class need. USC has 1 LB as well. There are a lot of LB’s still on the OU roster. Why isn’t 1 LB good enough for this year? You don’t need a Qb or FB every recruiting cylce do we?

    • eastoksooner says:

How many LB’s do we have on roster? We will need 8 to have a 2 deep running a 3/4 defense. Also need to account for injuries and such, I’d like to see 12 on the roster.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Okay. There are 12 LB’s. I excluded the seniors.

        • eastoksooner says:

I know it depends on class need, definitely need some quality back ups and guys for special teams. Never coached past pee-wee level and never really thought about how many LB’s a college team needs. Most people on TFB are saying we need 4 in this class.

      • eastoksooner says:

I understand some of the parts would be interchangeable so 12 may be too many, maybe not

    • Stephen Dale says:

Texas has five (5) LB’s committed in this class alone……………

  • bjwalker82 says:

So we’re looking at WKU’S OC Tyson Helton?

  • Glocal Sooner says:

So apparently Jay Norvell has been fired…

  • SavageSoonerEsq says:

    So Norvell is out?

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Listening to the FootballScoop guys on the radio right now. They’ve said that within the football community, there’s plenty of coaches talking that Jay Spavital (or however you spell it) from aTm, could be coming to OU to call plays and QB’s. In that case, they don’t believe Heupel would leave OU but move to WR’s. AGAIN, this is just a couple of football guys talking. Nothing confirmed on that point.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Here we go. MS interviewing is confirmed, JN out. Who’s next?

  • bjwalker82 says:

    Mediocrity is not an option.

  • James D-Space says:

Norvell out according to some reports. Changes are happening…..

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

Let’s see a few more names go before celebrating. Good start though.

  • RBear says:

OK, asked below but it got burried: O/U on total number of coaches let go @ 4?

  • curt gomer says:

    recruiting effect if true??

  • Guest says:

My understanding from sources close to the program is that only Gundy, Montgomery and Bedenbaughhave firm job security right now #Sooners— Jason Kersey (@jasonkersey) January 5, 2015

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Anyone still care about the Cowboy game?

  • Wilson says:

On a side note..is Romo yelling ‘Oklahoma’ as an audible?

  • RBear says:

Now that Norvell has been given his pink slip, does DGB leave since they have such a tight relationship?

  • Guest says:

As I believe TFB have already said:

My understanding from sources close to the program is that only Gundy, Montgomery and Bedenbaughhave firm job security right now #Sooners— Jason Kersey (@jasonkersey) January 5, 2015

  • Wilson says:

So over/under Dallas pisses this game away in the final minutes?

  • Zack says:

I believed norvell would be gone. I know heupel gets much of the blame but for whatever reason he and norvell haven’t done great together. And we know norvell isn’t missing on every recruit he brings in so it had to be some issue with his coaching and development.

    • Ed Cotter says:

Not sure if it would fly, but the Lion’s WR coach (Robert Prince) was the OC at Boise State as well as the WR coach a few years ago. Just sayin’.

  • bjwalker82 says:

So did Jordan fall asleep at the wheel? Does he have money on this game? I would have thought he’d be all over the reporting of this.

  • Andrew says:

That was the dumbest thing I have ever seen…just fall down stupid!!

  • RBear says:

Hey, we’re talking football here, enough of the Dallas Cowboy stuff 😉

  • curt gomer says:

    Humphrey stay firm with OU?

  • Wilson says:

    Calvin Johnson…

  • Wilson says:

And that boys and girls is why I don’t gamble….lol

  • SoonerfanTU says:

What kind of offense does WKU run?

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

I know he’s a linebacker, but anyone else see Polamalu in Fotu Leitao?

    • Andrew says:

Yes…just smaller…but yes. He seems like one of those guys where size won’t matter.
