Will Lockett: We caught up with OU cornerback offer and visitor, Will Lockett, last night. Lockett is a UCLA commit, but received an Oklahoma offer last month and visited for the Kansas game. He committed to UCLA back in the summer, but had not yet taken his official visit until about a week and a half ago for the USC game. There was some speculation that Lockett may want to stay closer to home and if he had perhaps visited for a different game (you’ll recall the Kansas game was rainy and relatively empty), the Sooners may have had a better chance.

But in talking to him it’s clear the UCLA trip went really well. He said, “the atmosphere was amazing!” Again, normally OU’s atmosphere would easily match and exceed what he saw in Cali, but he just so happened to come on a rainy weekend when the Sooners were playing…Kansas. Lockett didn’t hesitate to tell us that he is “solid” to UCLA and it doesn’t sound like there is much of a chance that’s going to change.

We’ll continue to watch the situation, but we think it’s pretty safe to go ahead and move on from this one.

Justin Reid: We also had a chance to catch up with 2015 S Justin Reid. Most of you will recall Justin made his trip to Norman for the Tennessee game and loved what he saw. In fact, he considered committing at the time but his parents preferred he take his remaining official visits. There were two offers that we were watching for we felt could pose a serious, if not fatal, threat to OU’s chances. One was LSU which would have been fatal, but that didn’t happen. The other was Stanford. Reid is an exceptional student and visited Stanford over the summer where he was intrigued by the program, the academics, and the fact that the school would put him near his brother, Eric, who plays for the 49ers.

Reid has plans to take an official visit to Stanford on January 17th. He’s also planning take an official to Mississippi State the following weekend. He told us he will take one final visit after the Mississippi State visit, but he hasn’t decided on the destination just yet. However, he did make it clear that right now, “it’s between OU and Stanford.” And we expect it to remain that way until the end. Reid said he will make his decision in late January after his final visit.

He also let us know that OU will do their in-home visit with him next week. Again, Reid has told us that it’s currently between OU and Stanford. And we really believe that if OU can hold off Stanford, they’ll be the team that lands Reid in the end.

PJ Mbanasor: Received a message from Mbanasor that Arkansas came by Hendrickson high school yesterday. Coach Clay Jennings was in town to visit the OU commit and also did an in-home visit with Mbanasor. You’ll recall that Mbanasor has a long standing relationship with Jennings from back when PJ was committed to TCU, as Jennings left TCU a little less than a year ago to take the job at Arkansas. The Razorbacks are making a strong push for Mbanasor. But to be honest, we really don’t feel they’re a huge threat at this point. Mbanasor has never even taken a visit to Arkansas so unless that changes, we don’t feel there is anything to worry about.

– Will Sunderland: As you may have seen in today’s daily links post, Bob Stoops continued his recruiting tour last night with an in-home visit with OU’s lone 2015 safety commit to date, Will Sunderland.

    Tell Jennings “hands off Mbanasor!”

  • Cole says:

Has stoops went and seen any linebackers other than Kirkland?

    • Gary Robbins says:

Somebody from OU went by and visited Dwaine Thomas of Boutte, La. on 11-29. Doesn’t say who and I haven’t seen any pictures.

  • Zack says:

If we could get haughton don’t you think that would help convince mbanasor to stay here? I think it’s been mentioned that they are somewhat close and have said they would like to play together.

    • Gary Robbins says:

Who is OU’s main competition for Haughton? I can’t remember for sure. Funny I can remember things and people from when I was a kid but can’t remember what I had for breakfast yesterday or did I have breakfast yesterday. Oh well.

      • Zack says:

Seems like most are saying it’s ou, tech, Baylor and Arkansas. I think he’s backed off from tech being a very serious contender since they are an embarrassment. And he’s stated he doesn’t like living in Waco so I would think our main competition is Arkansas and I’m not sure where their recruiting stands right now but central texas is not sec/Arkansas territory so we need to keep them out. Plus Arkansas does produce a lot of D1 players or at least they are for 2015.

  • shawn says:

    Did lucier-south commit to UCLA?

  • DFWSooner says:

Lockett visited for the Baylor game. The poor play by the secondary was a major determining factor.

What is this…..3 Open Posts on three consective days?!?! Nice!!!

Want to hear of some LA in-home visits…I’m sure those will happen next week. Jacobs, McGinnis, Thomas…

    • Gary Robbins says:

Just read from 247 sports bolts that OU plans to visit 4* linebacker Josh Smith from Murfreesboro, Tn. on Monday. He is a solid commit to Vanderbilt and doesn’t have an OU offer but might be interested in taking an official to OU among some other colleges, fwiw.

      • Cam says:

There’s no reason to let a 4* recruit go to Vanderbilt without a fight.

      • CS says:

There is ofcourse some reason (relatives, legacy blah blah) behind a 4* committing to Vandy. If he could be poached, believe me, these bigger SEC powers out there would have. But, knowing Kish, he seems to like banging his head repeatedly against a wall, so no wonder, he is going after this kid, and not extending offers to Thomas, Whitfield, to name a few.

    • Brian Glenn says:

We need to offer this kid, like right now.

  • soonerjunky says:

This is going to be a HUGE recruiting weekend!

    • Gary Robbins says:

I have that same gut feeling. OU needs to come out with that attitude. It’s the seniors last home game.

    • Zack says:

I saw this yesterday and it suggested to me that rivals has a south and western bias and espn scouts have really focused in that north east area. No one on rivals or 247 had probably even seen will johnson.

  • Mr. Jones says:

Not too upset by the Lockett info. I would prefer Ross, Samuel or Lane over Lockett.

  • Kevin says:

Exciting updates! Now if it wasn’t too much to ask, some trench warfare analyzing Perine’s runs against Kansas would be sweet…

  • Mr. Jones says:

Do we have a solid number on how many OL and how many CB’s OU is willing to take? I think the number that’s been talked about was 5 OL, but we’re there now so I’m curious how many more they would take.

  • Rene Goupillaud says:

OU v Kansas, even in good weather, doesn’t compare to UCLA v USC in the Rose Bowl, not even close. That is the game of the year in LA, even when one team isn’t doing well, much like the RRS.

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Not to change the subject from recruiting but I could see Heupel, M Stoops or Norvell getting a good look from Colorado St or Oregon St. Particularly Heupel or Norvell. Haven’t heard anything, just a feeling. Could be completely wrong.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I just think the shine has come completely off Heupel as a HC candidate. I do not see him leaving OU to be a HC elsewhere right now. Which will only make it harder for a change to be made (which I feel, and fear, won’t happen).

      • rphokc says:

does his name even come up for oc at a major

        • Zack says:

You mean something more major than ou? No

        • Glocal Sooner says:

I saw Norvell’s name linked to the Clemson OC job. Nothing on Heupel nor M Stoops other than Heupel to SMU which didn’t happen. Jordan could be right on Heupel right now. I don’t know if he is interested in leaving under the right circumstances or is happy where he’s at. If he’s interested in leaving, I could see Oregon St or CSU as possible intriguing jobs for him if he was offered. I don’t see SMU as intriguing. I don’t think he would leave OU to become the OC somewhere else unless he was pushed out the door from OU.

          • hOUligan says:

If JH wants to be a head coach some day he might have to get his start at a ‘mid’, meaning a starting salary of around $400K, far less than his current salary somewhere north of $600K.

      • Stephen says:

This isn’t exciting, I feel like his complacent play calling and stubbornness to adapt to personnel is costing OU in what kind be a big time for the program.

    • Zack says:

I will say that I hope no coaches leave until after NSD. After that is fine with me.

  • Zack says:

Are we back in on desean Holmes?

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Riley will do no better at Neb than Pelini. Odd hire.

    • rphokc says:

does seem odd…….he didn’t set the pac12 on fire and he’s 61 going to a place that wants results

    • Unique Landscaping says:

Couldn’t disagree more. Riley is a much better coach, and significantly better with people.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I’m sorry, but here is his record the last 5 seasons at Oregon State:

        2010: 5-7
        2011: 3-9
        2012: 9-4
        2013: 7-6
        2014: 5-7

That is terrible, especially in a league that has seen USC “down” during much of that time.

      • Jed says:

But he’s also going into an area with IMO a much worse recruiting pool.

        • CS says:

Both Oregon and Nebraska have not so great recruiting pool but being in Big west against inferior competition might work in his favor.

    • Greg sparks says:

I think Neb is trying to conjure up a younger Osborne with this hire.

  • Travis Coyle says:

    Getting spoiled!

  • SoonerSouthoftheRed says:

Anybody worth poaching off the Nebraska commit list?

  • Scott says:

Naturally, if I was a recruit the two schools I’d want to go to are OU and Stanford. Good for Reid, can’t fault him if he decides to go to Stanford.

  • Tyler says:

Does anyone else think we should not go after Kyler Murray and pursue Chason Virgil instead? Murray is projected to go first round in the MLB draft and could possibly get a big signing bonus. Although Murray is a playmaker, I would rather get Virgil because he will for sure be playing college football next year.

    • hOUligan says:

Bob has always made it clear, he wants to throw the ball so whichever has the highest football IQ and can read the field and deliver an accurate ball. That seems to be Virgil, who also ‘makes plays’. Either can be very good in the right offense.

      • John Garner says:

Read Virgil’s interview at OUI. The kid is well-spoken. Not sure how that translates to football IQ but it’s fairly clear he’s no dummy.

  • hOUligan says:

    Haughton and Reid, please.

  • OUknowitscomin says:

Seeing stud OT 2016 Jean Delance committed today

  • rphokc says:

don’t care what the corncobs do, but it is amusing that they fired pelini who never lost more than 4 games in a season and hired riley who lost at least 4 each yr …….sounds like a deal to me!

    • soonerbred4ever says:

I have no idea what sort of personality Riley has, but Pelini could piss off the Pope.

  • Stephen Dale says:

there is a decent chance Mbanasor doesn’t sign with OU….lots of ‘smoke’ about his concern with MStoops defensive schemes…….this fact could be the reason OU has started recruiting other CB’s in California……

    • Zack says:

Meaning Samuel? They were already aware of him. I think it’s more about not finding a second corner until Johnson. Also they don’t seem satisfied with the corners behind Sanchez and Jordan Thomas.

    • bmrsnr says:

I think the plan was always to take two cbs.

      • Zack says:

2 or 3 corners, 2 or 3 safeties or 6 total maybe. Especially since they don’t seem to trust Taylor and Austin. I thought they were high on green and Tito is probably going to surprise a lot of people when he sees the field.

  • Zack says:

And Brennan going after demarco again on twitter.

  • Zack says:

Alright I think we can take a bit of a breath here with the mbanasor deal. He’s got on his boom shirt to go with a sooners visor. Oh and wearing KD’s. Unless he JUST likes the way all the looks (and who wouldn’t) it’s safe to say Norman is the place he wants to be.

    • Sooner Ray says:

      But Stephen seen “smoke”.

      • Dustin says:

        From his crack pipe

      • Zack says:

I see smoke to but only because I know you can’t put a whole lot of stock into what a 17-18 year old kid thinks. Now if he never takes an official elsewhere then I wouldn’t worry but if he decides to take officials then I think that talk might get to him at some point.

And I hope the ou coaches are telling him the difference between pj and Julian. Wilson was a nickel guy who transitioned to a corner and I don’t know that Wilson was/is always confident with his technique.

        • Sooner Ray says:

I’m hoping the coaches are telling the corner recruits that what they are witnessing is proof we need them to come in and play early.

        • bmrsnr says:

          where do you see smoke?

          • Zack says:

Like I said I just see smoke because at the end of the day he’s only 17-18 years old. He seems like a bright kid and one that would think things through. Lsu, Arkansas and notre dame are going to do everything they can to get him.

  • bmrsnr says:

Did PJ say what the coaches are telling him for next year? More man? more cover 3?

  • Sooner Ray says:

This visitor list for the weekend is looking as big as a roster, not sure how they are going to give them all the time they deserve.

  • EasTex says:

Hard to believe it has already been twenty years since the “Greatest” High School football game ever played. I remember it clearly, listening to it on the radio.
On the games final kick off it should be noted that the receiving team suckered the kicking team into kicking it deep. They had no one back until the kicker started his motion and their ace returner raced back to receive it.
