Post RRSO Recruiting Notebook 10.13.14

With the help of Drake, I’ve got a few recruiting notes from this past weekend, including notes from this past weekend’s visitors:

Bo Wallace: OU 2015 outside linebacker target, Marshall ‘Bo’ Wallace, committed to Notre Dame over the weekend. Which was a bit of a shock. OU was Wallace’s first offer and he had indicated that he would take an official visit to Oklahoma.

Cassius Peat: Last night Cassius Peat tweeted out that he will be announcing his commitment today at 5:00 pm CST. However, the tweet has since been deleted. We haven’t spoken to Peat yet so we’re not sure if a decision will still be announced, but wanted to pass on the info.

Jamal Danley Solid?: Chatted a bit with OU OL commit Jamal Danley last night. He is a Mississippi native and other than Oklahoma, the primary school he was considering prior to his commitment was Mississippi State. With Mississippi State’s success, we wanted to check in with Danley and see if they were still coming at him hard. And it sounds like they are. He did tell us that he’s thinking about playing in the SEC. He didn’t say which school in particular but, one would assume it’s Mississippi State.

PJ Mbanasor: One player that is definitely solid in his commitment is PJ Mbanasor. Spoke to Mbanasor and he said he loved the OU/Texas game. He said “the rivalry is real.” He was happy with the way the defense rebounded from last week’s performance saying, “They (the defense) got more three and outs than last week and did a better job in the red zone and held them to less points.” He also commented on Zack Sanchez’s improved play. I thought his comments were interesting because it’s obvious that each recruit isn’t just looking at the overall play of the team, but really focusing in on specific position groups that are relevant to them.

Anthony Wheeler: Some really good news on the Anthony Wheeler front. The big time linebacker out of Skyline high school made it to the OU/Texas game as expected. While Wheeler holds a number of offers, the two main schools he’s been looking at are the Sooners and Longhorns (Baylor would be a third). Before the game, we were told by a source that Wheeler was favoring OU but Texas was making a push. I asked him who he was his current leader is after the game and Wheeler said straight up…”OU.”

Justin Reid: Drake spoke to Justin Reid after he made the trip to Dallas to see his second OU game (a good sign!) this season. Reid said, “I had a lot of fun at the game…especially in the first and last quarter. It was live there!” Reid is being recruited by Kansas State and has told us that he plans on visiting Manhattan this season, so he’ll likely have his eye on this weekend’s upcoming match-up.

Jean DeLance: 2016 offensive tackle Jean DeLance was in attendance at the game Saturday as well. DeLance already holds early offers from TCU and Texas Tech. He’s hoping for an OU offer though. DeLance told Drake that he spoke with coach Bedenbaugh and the way he described the game to Coach B was “intense.” Jean said, “I’m leaning towards Boomer Sooner!”

I started having concerns about Danley as Miss. St. kept winning big games. I would not be surprised if he switched.

    • Billy Jackson says:

Was thinking and typing the same exact thing. If we lose another commit, and if I were a betting man, Danley would be the one I’d bet on decommitting.

      • Brad Warren says:

Don’t want them anyway if not on board 100%. Recruits should learn the meaning of the word commitment before doing so. It looks ridiculous when they flip, sometimes two or three times.

  • Billy Jackson says:

I wondered about Danley’s commitment to OU with Miss. State’s recent success and attention. Couldn’t blame him for reconsidering the school since he’s from Mississippi. The only part of his statement that irks me is, once again, a kid saying he wants to play in the SEC. Good lord, man. Doesn’t anybody want to play for an actual freaking school anymore?

    • hOUligan says:

In Danley’s case, better now if not Sooner so OU still has a few months to scramble and pull in another guy. Maybe Riley Daniel, JR Hensley from in-state. Still hoping for Barnett and Wariboko but OU might not get either.

      • Billy Jackson says:

        Agreed.

        • hOUligan says:

Here’s my thing with Danley and ‘it’s a business decision’. Physical talent is important but in the end, guys that have heart and ‘want to’ and want to be Sooners will give more and take the team higher than guys who are in it as only a step to something else.

  • Your concerns are warranted. I did see that he responded to a guy on Twitter saying he’s still committed to OU. It does seem like he’s wavering a bit. OU keeps on winning it’ll remedy a lot of the skepticism re riots are having right now.

    • CS says:

Its all about the W’s really. Unless you are committed to TacoTech, in that case God knows what it is about. lol!

    • Billy Jackson says:

It would be great if OU can get back on track with mauling people on the O-line, and cleaning up the busts in the secondary and winning impressively. Watching an offense get 1 first down against their arch rival, while Miss. State was running all over Auburn would give any recruit reason to pause.

  • Zack says:

I would be ok with Danley switching his commitment. I’ve said all along I would take wariboko-Barnett over Danley-wariboko or Danley-Barnett. If you’re gonna go heavy at one position group they might as well be freshmen IMO that way you have them longer.

    • Stephen says:

Not sure there is much of chance with Wariboko, talked to someone close to him awhile back and was informed that he was really wanting to play out of state. Not saying there isn’t a chance, but the odds aren’t in our favor.

      • Zack says:

He’s been talking ou up a bit on twitter so I get the feeling ucla backed off. But with Louisville making a big push into oklahoma, I could see him going there with dahu and torre(2016)

  • SoonerfanTU says:

What is MSU’s oline situation? Danley could start at OU next year. Probably should start. What about at MSU?

    • Zack says:

Msu and ole miss are on a nice roll right now but attrition will set in. One will lose the head to head and then both will drop a game late. I don’t think either program is quite there to run the table.

    • Zack says:

My point though is that msu could end up with 2 losses and in a lower tier bowl game.

    • disqus_uj44WuVjt2 says:

With all the wonderful, great, athletic and smart recruits from last year riding the pine, I think I will wait until next October to get my hopes up!!!!

  • hOUligan says:

Any word on Malik Jefferson and Deandre McNeal? Pics of them throwing hook’em down signs or anything? Don’t like to get too amped over a 17 yr old kid but Jefferson could develop into a game-changer on D. Know it’s a longshot but with the whorns and ags struggling, OUr chances improve.

    • Zack says:

From a tweet I saw Reid hung out with jefferson and mbanasor. So if all these guys get together and ou (hopefully) improves and wins out then I think the buzz will pick up again.

    • Stephen says:

I feel like he’s almost a guarantee for A&M. He did note on twitter that he likes the way Striker plays, so take that fwiw.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Thanks for the update K…..was wondering what happened with the recruits from this weekend. Who can we expect in Norman for the KSU game?

  • Super K says:

By the way, should probably note…I’m not worried about recruiting. I believe success is about finding the right players and coaching them up. There are a lot of players OU is in on and there are a lot of players OU can get it on. Michigan State has one of the best defenses in the country and they do it by finding the right guys, coaching them up and putting them in a good scheme.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Glad to hear there are still some positives on the recruiting trail despite the past couple of games.

  • AmaGoh7 says:

Mi$$i$$ippi $tate and Ole Mi$$ have had periodic success, however I dont see this recent success as being anything sustainable over the long-haul. Maybe history will prove me wrong, however I would doubt that it would. Better he flip now if he’s going to so OU can have time to sign another.

    • ND52 says:

Dan Mullen is not staying at Miss State. I’d lay down money that he’ll be in Ann Arbor next year unless one of the Harbaughs wants it.

  • Jed says:

Yo, K! Can you or JY ‘splain to me WTH has happened to our Oline? It’s like no one can hold a block anymore.

    • Dlee914 says:

In my humble opinion, the problem isnt with the O-line, its with the scheme/play calling. When a D has 8 men in the box and we are running out of the pistol and everybody knows the QB isnt going to run with the ball, how hard is it to key on the RB? Yet JH just keep running straight into it with little to no success. I may be wrong but thats what Im seeing.

      • Zack says:

This is what I believe the problem is. I thought it was bad that our line wasn’t mowing over Tulsa a few weeks back but now that were seeing better teams it appears that the line is not able to get a push because it’s 6 vs 8 more often than not.
        2 things would fix that.
One is go to a power run game and quit “fooling” the defense with the qb-rb exchange cause the only person “confused” is JH.
2 is that the power run game will open the middle of the field with hard play action we should be able to get guys open behind the backers and in front of the safeties. And if the safeties play up on those routes over the middle, then you have one on one coverage for shep.

Again I’m not anywhere near the football smart as JH and norvell but this offense has been anemic at best since wvu. And the good news is that kstate will be the last good defense we play. So if we have success vs them then I think we have a shot at the big 12 title.

      • Ed Cotter says:

I got lambasted on here yesterday from some posters because I stated the same thing after posting a comment JH made in his interview after the game, about needing to be more efficient running the ball on first and second down. Hard to be efficient running the ball when everyone in the stands and the opposing sidelines know you are running between the tackles in the zone read and your QB isn’t going to keep it.

  • Mr. Jones says:

With Wheeler’s top 2 being OU/Texsa, do you think he commits sometime soon or does he drag it out?

    Gut feeling on Peat?

    • Malicong says:

I think Peat is going to commit to UCLA.

      • Zack says:

Me too but the fact he waited til he got home may mean ou is very much in it. But for a guy I’ve heard no time table for his commitment to all of a sudden say he’s going to announce today, doesn’t make me feel great.

  • vargo05 says:

BTW, target DT Darian Roseboro committed to NC State on Saturday. A lot of people thought OU had a chance after he decommitted from UM. NC State was his #2 school when he committed to UM originally.

  • Tyler says:

What about the A&M qb commit that was at Ou-Texas? Is this something to look into or just a recruit taking a visit just to see a game?

  • Brad Warren says:

    What about DeBerry?

  • Mark slavin says:

Any chance we get C.Peat tonight I’m thinking ucla but there’s hope right?

  • rphokc says:
