OU vs. Iowa State – What I’ll Be Watching

* Mike Stoops’ defensive game plan for containing Sam B. Richardson – No one is going to confuse the Iowa State QB for an elite athlete, but he is more than enough of an athlete to keep plays alive and make something happen outside the pocket. And that’s the exact same kind of quarterback we’ve seen OU face the past three games and at the same time we’ve witnessed M.Stoops go uber-conservative with his defensive approach as a result. It hasn’t made sense the past three games and with all due respect this is just Iowa State, but what reason/s would I possibly have (I mean beside the two I just gave you) to believe M.Stoops will do anything different on Saturday?

If they rush three, drop eight, and play that soft zone crap yet again Richardson will be able to make plays. Don’t confuse Iowa State equating to have no talent. They have some talented guys on this offense and after watching what they did to a Texas defense that, at times, had their way with OU, it’s abundantly clear Mark Mangino just might be pretty good as this offensive coordinator thing.

We’ve all heard a million times by now how quarterbacks like Richardson kill OU defenses. And we’ve all seen how a passive approach to defending that style of QB has not worked. So if OU comes out on Saturday and tries to do the same thing again, I’m going to lose it. And frankly, even if they don’t and whatever they do differently works I’m not entirely sure how much credit they deserve for waiting until eight games into a season now with two losses to do so.

* Defensive discipline – Iowa State does a lot of stuff off zone read/read option looks and we just saw this OU defense fare quite poorly against KSU’s POP pass plays (which I realize aren’t the same, but both obviously involve the defense staying disciplined in their assignments. I’m fully expecting Mangino to spread this OU defense out and force the linebackers and safeties to have to make plays in space, something we’ve seen both positions struggle with at times this season. Stay in your lanes, don’t bite on the read action, and don’t let anyone behind you for a big play.

* Defending E.J. Bibbs – Third straight defensive point of emphasis, you think I’m a little worried about the Mangino vs. M.Stoops match-up? But this point was specific to Bibbs for a reason, and that reason is his being the best tight endin this league. He’s a very difficult match-up for any defense, but particularly this OU squad because of their undersized linebackers and considerable struggles their safeties not named Q.Hayes have had in coverage.

Mangino will move Bibbs around a lot, they like to split him out on a regular basis. So the key for Oklahoma will be avoiding mismatches Mangino can exploit. In previous weeks, teams have tried to spread out the OU defense and force Eric Striker to play coverage rather than his much more effective and disruptive role of rushing the QB. And amazingly, it has sure looked as though M.Stoops made few adjustments to avoid that happening.

Oh, and if Mangino can get Bibbs matched up with Ahmad Thomas then it will likely be a long day for this OU secondary.

* Tempo – Sorry, one more on this Mangino/M.Stoops topic. Much like I expect Mangino to spread this OU defense out, I also expect to see him go up tempo to try and help create opportunities for this ISU offense. He did it quite a bit against Texas and did so with great effectiveness. So I see no reason why he wouldn’t try to do the exact same on Saturday. The big question will be whether or not Mike will be able to adjust for it prior to halftime.

* What I expect to be a conservative Josh Heupel and what happens if OU gets behind early – I’m expecting to see the OU game early and often. The Sooners have a considerable size advantage up front against this ISU defensive line. Oklahoma’s offensive lines averages 321 pounds a man, while Iowa State’s defensive line averages just over 267 pounds a man. If OU can’t push these guys around something will have gone drastically wrong.

To this point, it will be interesting to see just how much Cale Gundy tries to work in Keith Ford, who is expected back for the first time since the Tennessee game. I wouldn’t expect they should need much of him Saturday, but you also need to get him back into the flow for next week’s Baylor game.

And what happens if OU gets behind early? We’ve seen what has looked to be Heupel abandoning a game plan if things aren’t going as expected. If OU were to get down early, would he go away from the run game and get pass happy like we’ve seen in the past?

* Trevor Knight – To that previous point or really just Heupel in general, I know he said this week his shoulder is 100%, but I’m not buying it. I could be completely wrong and he’s perfectly fine, but I just kind of have this sneaking suspicion that’s not the case. We’ll see on Saturday though because it’s going to be fairly cold, and I’d bet you in that type of weather his shoulder will be stiff. So how will he be accurate? Will OU be afraid to run him?

There’s not much about this Iowa State defense that really worries me, but that’s based on OU not hamstringing themselves offensively and/or Knight giving the ball to the other team. If one or both of those things happen, it could (stress, could) get much more interesting Saturday than OU fans are hoping for.

* WRs not named Shepard – The Cyclones play a lot of man coverage, so if the Oklahoma receivers (not named Shepard) can’t get separation it could be a pretty bad sign. I’d expect safety help over the top on Shepard until someone else proves to be enough of a viable threat that ISU has to respect them. That or the OU run game proves to strong and they simply have to commit another guy or two up to the box to defend it.

* ISU’s size on the outside – One other quick one. I mentioned this in my ‘Names To Know‘ post from Wednesday, but Iowa State has to 6’5″ wide receivers that should present a difficult physical match-up for OU’s corners. Both guys are coming off big games against Texas as well. It remains to be seen if Richardson will be able to take advantage of it (I’m hopeful M.Stoops will actually try to bring pressure on Saturday and Richardson will spend the better part of the day running for his life), but it will definitely be something to keep an eye on.

What will you be watching for Saturday morning afternoon?

    Moneycutt’s confidence.

  • Bill Duncan says:

Quick…..I want to see his separation with man coverage. He could have a big day if Shepard is doubled up.

I can’t remember the last time I was nervous about an Iowa St team and maybe that’s a reflection of how poorly OU has played/been coached lately. I’m hoping Mike simplifies the defense and let our players just get after them. Don’t get all concerned what Mangino’s going to do. On offense play with tempo and pound the ball with play action. Get Bell and the slot receiver involved.

    ……ah, yes………the old oline size advantage…….
…….would seem their te made a correct decision to not come here……..

I will be watching to see the energy of this OU team. It seems that OU plays its best ball when they have nothing to lose and they’re backed into a corner with everyone doubting them (Sugar Bowl, 2000 season). As outrageous as it might be, there is still that part of me who thinks OU will play lights out and everything will fall into place to give OU an opportunity to make the Playoff. It would take a minor miracle but if there was ever a season that all that madness could happen, it might be this one. Here’s to hoping there is just enough Sooner Magic left over for this season. wide splits vs OUr D…. i swear if i see a passive D (again) i may lose it. TE/Slot need to step up. If OUr team needs Moneycutt (he still deserves the name ) to win this game that is a sad state of affairs imho…Boomer

    • Gary Robbins says:

Surely OU has a plan for wide splits. If not I will be like you and Jordan-probably lose it. I’m ready for OU to open the flood gates and make some statement wins. I don’t want to hear another “we’re improving – just need to correct some errors this next week”. It’s all about the “attitude”.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yep. Even in the NFL, a turnover can be overcome by being dominant for the great majority of the game. Fact is, a red zone pick 6 should not be the difference between winning and losing if OU has more talent and is the better team.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

If OU needs Moneycutt. You are right. Unless you believe Mike S who says there is not a great deal of difference in talent between OU and the rest of the Big 12.

  • soonermusic says:

Has there been any word on Bell’s injury? I missed whether any comments were made about it, other than Stoops’ early “decline to comment.”

  • soonermusic says:

I’ll be watching to see if the stuff that improved in the last game: receiver spacing, route running, ball catching, passing accuracy, blocking, alignment issues, reduced mental mistakes continues to be better this week, or not. Also, will be very interested, to say the least, in seeing how Ford looks after the layoff. Wouldn’t hurt to see some solid extra point and/or field goal kicking just for reassurance purposes.

I am a bit more positive and less nervous than many of you are about this game. I have confidence in the coaching staff and continued growth and improvement in the players, so I am looking for a beat-down in the neighborhood of 48-10. 🙂

  • Boomer4life says:

Hopefully I will be watching better game management with the time outs. Just sayin!

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I think we have to realize that the majority of Stoops’ victories at OU has been blowouts. Over the years there have been very few wins in tight games. What I mean is that perhaps Stoops’ hasn’t had to put a premimum on time management.

2014 close games- 31-26 vs UT
2013- 16-7 vs WVU, 20-17 vs TCU, 38-30 vs TTU, 41-31 KSU, 33-24 vs OSU, 45-31 vs bama
2012- 42-34 vs baylor, 50-49 vs WVU, 51-48 vs OSU, 24-17 vs TCU.

Thats 11 close wins in the last 2 1/2 seasons, several of those wins were in the closing seconds. I think hes getting a worse rap than he deserves as far as not being able to find ways to win close games.

You keep preaching, I’ll keep drinking. Together we’ll get it done!

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I can’t add much. It does seem that making Striker work in coverage has coincided with OU’s defense struggling. Really sick of this. Two losses, in games that we easily could have won.

    • SoonerBred says:

I’ll be curious if we made better use of THIS bye week, and it would be nice to not see Mike Stoop’s often used 3-8 D much on Saturday.

  • Stephen Dale says:

I’ll be watching to see the percentage of ‘3 & outs’ the defense can manufacture against the clones. Anything approaching 50% 3rd down conversions by ISU will mean a long day for the OU defense and a closer game than being predicted. Until OU shows a better ‘stop percentage’ , I’ll take ISU plus the points and like ISU to win the game ‘straight up’ . Such a loss would almost guarantee a 7-5 type season .

  • red clay says:

Hoping to see “the dog” in our squad. The kind that never backs down from anything.

  • EasTex says:

What I’m watching right now is a first half blowout of the Buttered Crab Legs by the Red Birds.
    More CHAOS, please.

  • rphokc says:

……wonder how arky would be doing if petrino would have just let the coeds alone……..he’s a very good offensive coach

    • EasTex says:

Everybody screws up in some way at some time in their life, but few do it so monumentally and publicly as he did.
I cannot imagine the humiliation he must have experienced and the loss of trust from his family.

  • OUknowitscomin says:

I’ll be watching to see if fans freak if it’s a close game. That would never happen with superstars like AD on team (except 2007 17-7) or surely a Switzer coached team wouldn’t let it happen (except 1981-1984 games).
Kind of a no win situation for OC & DC, come out on fire & people will be pissed because where has that been or ‘it’s just ISU’.
I expect a 35-17 type game, but most importantly I look for a WR (mostly hoping Quick) to just catch fire to force Baylor into more honest coverage of WR’s.

  • Tulsa Terry says:

First time in a while the Sooners play ISU with a chip on their shoulder. Score 50 and cruise.

    More Sanchez

What’s the over/ under on the first timeout call. I’ll say 4 minutes in
