Fox will be televising coach Stoops appearance at Big 12 Media Days today. We will use this post to add updates from his presser and any other media notes we come across from other attendees that may be of interest.

Coach Stoops should be up at around 10:00 am.

In the meantime, we thought you might find the article below interesting. It is a list of the 14 best college coaches that was published last month on NFL.com. Obviously some great coaches on there but really have an issue with some of the ordering and maybe even the inclusion of one or two of those coaches.. The rankings were:

1. Nick Saban 2. Chris Peterson 3. Urban Meyer 4. David Shaw 5. Bill Snyder 6. Art Briles 7. Bob Stoops 8. Mark Dantonio 9. Gary Patterson 10. David Cutcliffe 11. Steve Spurrier 12. Kevin Sumlin 13. Jimbo Fisher 14. Mike Riley

Coach Bob Stoops

– Coach Stoops introduces the players that accompanied him and introduced Julian Wilson as “senior cornerback slash nickelback”

– Coach Stoops said he is hopeful that DGB could play this year. Stoops said that he had extensive conversations with coach Norvell, with the coaches at Missouri and with DGB and his family and in the end they felt they could offer him a place to get a second chance. Said that they believe in him as a young man and believe in what he can become.

– Loves the new rule because it allows the coaches to interact with the kids and influence them in a positive way. It doesn’t necessarily change the time they have for preparation (just a little extra film time) but more than anything it’s being able to be around the players and monitor their progress.

– On whether OU will change coverage due to the loss of Aaron Colvin, coach Stoops said no. He mentioned that Julian has been working out at corner and he was recruited initially as a corner and will compete for that spot along with Dakota, Stanvon, Cortez and the freshman. “We’re going to see who is most consistent and making the most plays.”

– Talked about coach Strong and his familiarity with him. Said he feels coach Strong is “a great coach and an excellent person”. Said, “I know he’ll do a great job and he’s a great coach.”

– Said that they are going to try to protect the QB position and they emphasize to him that Trevor needs to avoid contact when he’s trying to pick up yards with his feet. “It’s something we’ll talk a lot about with him”

– Coach Stoops in talking about the push to allocate more funding to student athletes, said that he is in favor of “cost of attendance.” Said he feels its particularly important for the kids to be able to pay for transportation to get back home (side note: this would be huge for a school like OU in terms of recruiting because this is definitely a barrier for kids out west and in the deep south).

– Said that Blake Bell is “the prototype TE”…he’s got “great size”…he can run…great spacing. Said he feels that Blake is going to be a difference maker.

– Said that he feels Baker Mayfield should be eligible to play immediately because he isnt on scholarship. As we noted recently coach Stoops said “it’s something we are working through.” Also talked about Baker being an excellent player…great poise, etc.

– Talked about the size of the RBs. Specifically mentioned Keith Ford, Alex Ross…hesitated like he was going to say another name and then said David Smith. Then talked about Daniel Brooks as a speedy guy. Mentioned that both Mixon and Perine have looked good in the summer.

– Talked about how important he feels the strength of schedule is and how he feels their scheduling has been intentional and should be rewarded…and “it’s worked well for us.”

– Said that the Alabama win allowed them to finishing recruiting a positive way. And as much as anything it inspired the players to build on it in the way “we train and the way we went into the spring.” “We had a fabulous summer…I’ve never seen my strength coach, coach Schmidt so happy…and he can be hard to please”

NOTE: Ian Boyd with an interesting tweet mentioning something that really caught my ear:

For those of y’all haven’t seen it, we did a brief breakdown a little while back on the potential of Julian at CB: HERE

That’s funny but true. Reality and perception don’t always meet. Reality, UT can’t stand to go 8-4. However, perception is if you go 8-4 in the SEC, then it’s great.

    • Doobie74OU says:

I agree mostly with this Tweet and it made me ROFLMAO but I will say that the general perception is that over the last few years aTm is a program most think is on the rise while over the last several years UT has been spiraling and spinning their wheels. Every year Mack was changing 2 or 3 coaches trying to make something happen and it didn’t work! If they didn’t have just a wealth of talent on those teams it would have been a much quicker demise for Coach Brown!

    • DCinAZ says:

      HAHA……..nice job coach Patterson!

    • JJsooner1 says:

      Wow…..there be some hatin!!

  • SoonerPhins says:

Lol at Briles and Peterson being placed before Stoops and LOL at the addition of Sumlin. List has officially become invalid to me because there are way more deserving coaches to be placed on that list.

    • Super K says:

Agree. And can’t understand coach Snyder being above coach Stoops either. It’s subjective I suppose but there have to be some objective facts in play. So what objective stats are being used to put coach Snyder over Stoops?

      • SoonerPhins says:

I give Snyder more credit because he literally took the Worst CFB program and turned it around. Just my opinion though. Briles, though, was only put on that list for things that happened in the last 2-3 years. Same goes for Sumlin.

        • paganpink says:

And that Sumlin may have had little control over, in all honesty. I think he’s a good guy and a reasonably good coach but the verdict is still out on him as a head coach- and it will be for years!

          • SoonerPhins says:

Everyone will be watching to see if he can still win post-Maziel.

          • JJsooner1 says:

Maybe change it to Nauziel? So sick of hearing about this guy and his bs off the field. Truly shocked he was in the first round with who was chosen behind him. Just MHO.

      • Chris says:

The only thing I would say for Snyder is that he took one of the worst programs in sports and made them competitive year after year and he has done it twice now. However, Briles over Stoops is a complete joke.

      • Kuzi says:

        1. 4 coaches without national championships in front of Coach Stoops. Fisher being so low is also somewhat questionable.
        2. National perception of Coach Stoops has taken some hits over the years. Whether it’s the USC nat’l championship game, Boise State game, or the comments that Coach Stoops has made over the years (by the way, I agree with everything he said). The national media dislikes Coach Stoops (if you need any proof, listen to the podcast of the Tony Kornheiser show the day after the Sugar Bowl) and has a low opinion of him. I don’t think it matters to him that he won 7 outright conference titles (and 1 shared), 1 national title, 2 Heisman trophy winners, and has won with teams that had no business achieving what they did (2006, last year).
        3. People have forgotten how bad OU was the year before Stoops took over.

      • Josh says:

That list is a joke to me but I’m never surprised at the lack of respect shown to Oklahoma. Of all the College Football “Blue Bloods”, the University of Oklahoma always seems to get the short end of the respect stick, so to speak.

      • Jed says:

I suppose you could make something of an argument that Stoops is a student of Snyder’s and therefore……
It doesn’t sound any better in writing than it did verbally, though….

      • JJsooner1 says:

        How are they head-to-head?

      • Cary Newman says:

I’ve known Art for twenty years, since his HS coaching days at Stephenville. Great guy. But ranked above Bob? C’mon.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I wouldn’t take any of them over Stoops.

    • Stats says:

How can you have a valid list with 3 coaches from Texas schools and none of them are the coach from THE University of Texas? 😉

  • Jordan Esco says:

If you weren’t already aware, you can stream today’s pressers here —> http://www.big12sports.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10410&db_oem_id=10410&catid=0

  • SoonerPhins says:

Also did any one else see that Louis Brown committed to Texas? Looks like that ship has officially sailed

    • Super K says:

Yeah. The writing was on the wall for a while. Feel he wouldve been a better fit in OU’s scheme. Has rare athleticism and agility for his size and OU would’ve given him a chance to showcase all of it for NFL scouts.

      • Boom says:

Agreed. How do you see Bo Wallace, DeBerry, Tak, or Peat matching up with Brown. Seems Brown had the length on them but not the size.

      • Indy_sooner says:

K, any news on how Long’s (LB) visit went yesterday? I was hoping we’d land LB talent and make it 2 for 2.

    • Indy_sooner says:

He decommitted from Baylor really, because UT got involved. Was not an OU lean by any means and I think most here assumed/ knew he was a stretch.

    • SoonerPhins says:

Should have been a Crimson Limo with White Wall Tires…

    • Jed says:

The whole stretch limo thing is so 1980’s. it’s like it’s prom night or something. Get the man a Maybach Benz and we be stylin’!

      • Josh says:

Coach Switzer would have been rolling in a white limo and stepped OUt in a full length mink!!

    • Doobie74OU says:

1st) How does Bob Stoops show up with no Crimson(Red) on at all! LOL!
2nd) I can’t quit tell who is getting off the plane behind him but if they are going to bring guys his size a lot they need to invest in a plane with bigger doors!

      • SoonerPhins says:

Looks like Geno. If he can barely fit, then I don’t know how Chuka fit on that plane lol

  • Kuzi says:

Anyone else think that it’s funny that a lot of the calls that Walt Anderson is using as examples of incorrect rulings went against Oklahoma? Disclaimer: I am not a “refs are out to get us” person.

  • Josh says:

39 Days Till Football Time in Oklahoma!! Boomer Sooner!!!

  • Jared William Reininger says:

Who wrote that list of coaches? Or did they just throw them into a hat and pull them out? Saban, okay, that makes sense, after that it is pretty downhill as far as sense. I respect Snyder a lot, and even Briles to an extent but neither has Stoops success. And I have never been on the Gary Patterson train….I think he is OK, but he is not an elite coach IMO.

    • hOUligan says:

You cannot deny the work ethic(perhaps the moral ethic) of Saban or the results but after him and MAYBE a couple of others, Bob, as said above, is no further than 3-4 on a list a definitely better than Briles. Go to a Dairy Queen in Salem, OR and bet they haven’t heard of Briles but have heard of Bob Stoops!!!

      • Jared William Reininger says:

Yeah I actually respect Saban as a coach, I mean he seems to have the personality of a bar of soap but as a coach, he is damn good and great work ethic.

      • Doobie74OU says:

Of Course they know Bob Stoops in Oregon! Everybody there is like “You remember when we stole that game from Bob Stoops and The OU Sooners in 2006 because the worst referees in the WORLD were calling the game!”

        • Josh says:

That is still the biggest BS call I’ve ever seen in my life. The ’84 OU/ut game ranks pretty high up there but in 06 they had instant replay!! Yup… I’m still bitter lol!!

          • Doobie74OU says:

Well as you can tell by my comment I’m completely over it! LOL!

          • Josh says:

Hey I wasn’t even born until 8 years later but every time they show the Johnny Rogers return in the “Game of the Century” I yell out “CLIP” because that’s what Pops used to do lol… Sooners have long memories but we come by it honestly!

          • Boom says:

It was a clip and I saw it, I was 10. They got that one call but Switzer remembered and beat the heck out of them during his tenure.

          • Josh says:

Yes sir, Coach Switzer definitely took it to Tommy over the years something like 12-5 I think, not that he would ever get any credit for it.

          • Boom says:

I can take the clip but the fumble by one of our favorite backs in 78 cost us a natty. We went on to play them again in the orange and won. Should have won 77 (lost to Arkansas for their biggest victory to date) and that 78 Nebraska game. 2 more natty’s that got away.

          • Josh says:

Very true… love listening to Coach Switzer talk about those games that got away like that, 35+ years later and he still gets miffed. Looking back it makes you wonder if they ever even discussed ball security lol!

          • Boom says:

He was Al Davis before Al, just win baby. Don’t care if you have 5 fumbles, just win.

          • Josh says:

Yes he was! Gotta love The King!

  • SoonerPhins says:

Bob Stoops is about to start his press conference.

  • Jordan Esco says:

BREAKING: Bob Stoops is excited about the work they put in this summer.

  • Brian says:

There’s no way Stoops should be no less than 3 or 4 on that list.

  • Defend Colfax says:

Thanks Fox sports, I had no idea Trevor Knight was a Jr. or that Memorial Stadium holds 60K.

    • SoonerPhins says:

      Was that from Ubben?

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Well, technically the stadium will hold 60K. It’ll also hold a lot more than that. I can’t convolute logic enough to account for labeling TK a Jr, though.

      • Defend Colfax says:

Wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t in print as maxing out at 60,538 or something like that, It was under 61K

  • Jordan Esco says:

Trevor Knight looking yoked (no homo)

  • Easton says:

Interviewing Geneo: He pauses at about 60 seconds in and asks “Are we live?” Just want to say that was a classic movie reference, and had to be for the boys back home watching. Laughing out loud. Our guys are solid.

  • DCinAZ says:

Is any coach more likeable that Paul Rhoads?

  • Krys Allen says:

That coaching list is ridiculous! Not just the fact that Stoops at worst should be top 5, but putting Jimbo at 13, Dantonio right behind Stoops… Briles ahead of Stoops… No Les Miles… David Shaw in the top 10… Chris Peterson at 2!!!… This list is a complete joke.

    1. Saban
    2. Meyer
    3. Stoops
    3. Jimbo (not sure about this, recent success short tenure)
    4. Les Miles

The rest you can all lump together the ones on my list are perennial contenders in power conferences who took teams from average/below average and made them national champs.
-David Shaw hasnt been doing it long enough
-Art Briles has only had recent high levels of success top 10 for sure
-Peterson needs time to show Boise success wasn’t just bc of his weak conference
-Patterson great defense but have they ever even smelled a conf title?
    -Dantonio see Patterson
-Sumlin Manziel is gone now, and you didn’t win a conf title when you had him

    I could go on…

    • JJsooner1 says:

Well said, don’t agree with Meyer over Stoops, but nice post:-)

      • Doobie74OU says:

I agree I wouldn’t take Meyer over Stoops but he has went to 3 different schools and at the first 2 built them from an average team to National relevance and is well on his way to doing it again at his current and third spot. The top 5 coaches are all the same really to me when arguing position! You could argue that Saban has the best players every year, Meyer leaves every time the ship is going in a downward turn, Stoops has lost the big game several times since he won it, Snyder doesn’t have a Championship, Fisher is still to new, Patterson played a week schedule at Boise all those years, and so on and so forth. For all the ups and downs I will take Bob Stoops every time!!!

      • Krys Allen says:

Ya, i was just trying to make sure it wasn’t too homerish… Meyer has been a successful HFB at 3 schools now in 3 conferences, has more titles, and beat Stoops head to head in NC.

    • Josh says:

The fact that they put Shaw on there with a 34-7 career record completely discredits that list lol

      • Doobie74OU says:

I wouldn’t have him anywhere near this high and that is for sure not been HC long and no Championships but I will say I’m impressed with the quality of teams he continues to put out with Stanford’s academic requirements.

        • Josh says:

I agree he has been impressive to date but he took over a pretty stacked program also.

  • wolfbuilder says:

Who all do we have there

    • Brian says:

Bob Stoops, Daryl Williams, Trevor Knight, Geneo Grissom, Julian Wilson, and Chuka Ndulue.

  • SamPato says:

Think it’s a coincidence that while the Big XII Media days are going on Saban is doing a sit-down on Sportscenter?! SMH

    • Defend Colfax says:

They got Spurrier on today as well.

    • Super K says:

Thought the same thing. I mean I get the SEC slant but dang it’s like the big 12 conference has the financial appeal of the Sun Belt to them. I would think they could at least fake some remote interest.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Probably didn’t help that they had 2,345,626 new commercials ready to roll out about the GREATNESS of the SEC only to have OU dominate Alabama & Florida State beat Auburn in the last 2 big games last year! So sad for sEcSPN but I won’t shed a tear for them!

  • Cory Reedy says:

    I LOVE Gary Patterson. : )

  • Boom says:

    K, Jordan posted this – #Sooners RT @adamgorney Big-time DE Keisean Lucier-South: I’m hearing a lot from #Oklahoma now
For the past couple of months we (the readers) have been monitoring Campbell, Gallimore, Jacobs and now Mann. We all knew Lampkin was a UT lean. With this post, I know Keisean Lucier-South has a lot of stars but don’t much about him. I realize today is about Big 12 media day but I would welcome some evals or info on DE’s & LB’s. We have seen some individual info on a couple but not together. We have a decent understanding of the OL, QB, DB’s and RB. However, speaking for myself, these two areas are a huge interest to me. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    • Zack says:

I haven’t thought ou was being considered for him. This has to help a little for ou.

Edit – when I say considered I mean I didn’t like our chances much

    • Doobie74OU says:

      Really Good News!

  • Tom says:

Hopefully we can get a few more commits when fall practice begins….

  • Doobie74OU says:

For everybody like me that has been following this post all day & not checking the main page, Super K has sneaked in a Open Post for today as well! Good News everywhere on TFB today!

  • Stephen says:

Turned on ESPN during lunch to see if I could catch up on Big 12 media day. Not surprisingly, they were talking about SEC coach’s with Nick Saben and Steve Spurrier live also talking about their top rated recruiting classes over the past few years. Need. Kickoff.

  • thebigdroot says:

They whole debate between the best coaches in CFB are for the most part very debatable. Most would agree that Saban (wouldn’t let my son play for him) is #1. After that it’s pretty debatable. The Snyder vs any other coach thing is pretty interesting. FWIW here is my thoughts on Snyder: Would Snyder have been as successful if he was at OU or UT, where you have to do with more press and donors who wnat to be involved? Would Stoops or Saban have been able to do what Snyder did at KSU? A great Coach has to be in the right place at the right time to have the oppurtunity to be great. Just my opinion.
