What Just Happened?! – TCU’s Late 4th Quarter TD (Part 2)

2nd and goal; 2:38 in the 4th quarter

So here is where we give up the TD to Boykin and TCU at the very end of the game. They’ve got doubles (receivers are 2×2) gun weak. OU is playing man off roughly 6 yards in a catch technique where they shuffle and mirror the receivers.

Again, we’ve got our speed on the edge. Coach Mike wants to bring field pressure to keep Boykin from getting outside of them. They blitz Wilson off the edge and Chuka is lined up in a 4i (inside the RT) where he’s going to cross the guard to strong side A gap and Shannon is going to hit the B gap bullet blitz. The coaches are hoping that the center will help pick up the Nose and with the guard taking Chuka, Frank would have a free shot at the QB (side note: if Phillips was in the center maybe does have to help pick up the Nose). Sounds like a good play, especially since we cover the receivers perfectly.

But we let Boykin get outside. Again.

Wilson gets locked up by the right tackle. He loses outside contain on Boykin. Shannon comes off his blitz and tries to chase Boykin down but, surprisingly, isn’t able to catch him. Alexander also tries to run him down but he hesitates in his pursuit; perhaps because he’s afraid Boykin might reverse fields. But he’s got his NT and the defensive end over there for boundary contain so once Dom sees Boykin running full speed to the field he should probably be hitting 0 to 60 mph quick. If he does, he likely meets him well before Boykin gets to the end zone.

Coach Mike called field side pressure which I’m sure he hoped would ensure that Boykin would have to hurry the throw or find no where to run but back to the boundary. It was a great call but not played great.  But let’s be real. The defense had an amazing night and it wasn’t easy trying to find mistakes in this game. And these kind of plays are going to happen but they are happening a lot less to our defense this year.

Good stuff Ace. Thanks for the breakdown but I think you forgot to mention the incompetence of the refs…haha

Yeah Coach Mike and Julian seemed upset after the play like they felt like Julian was held. But if you’re a thin DB trying to bull rush a linemen he’s probably going to be able to hold on to you tight enough where the ref can’t see any jersey pulling. He probably could have taken a bit of an outside path since Frank was blitzing the B gap but he was obviously trying to make sure he stayed in his rush lane.
