Trench Warfare | OU vs. OSU (1st Quarter)

1. Alright let’s get this thing rolling.  Here’s a read option right with a lead blocker (Ripkowski)  The guy Trevor’s reading has the blue arrow pointing at the top of his head.  Rip’s, Clay’s and Trevors path are outlined up top, and Derek Farniok is shown below.

Untitled_360

1. (cont.) A split second later off the keep you see the great lane opened up.  He gets a gain of 9 for the first down.

Untitled_361

2. On the next play we go zone read back to the left, with the counter action we’ll use later in the game.  The right blue arrow shows #92 with his shoulders turned.  Trevor makes the correct read and pulls it.  Derek, top red arrow is up on the linebacker, and the outside o-state defender is literally caught in the middle.

Untitled_362

2. (cont.) A frame later, Trevor’s north and south.  Derek has his man driven six yards off the ball(not bad for a guy who didn’t play well :-D).  The o-state defender is still flat footed…

Untitled_363

2. (cont.) Trevor gets a gain of 12, and guess who that is in the red circle hustling downfield?  Yep, that Farniok guy.  Jalen also hustling to get a block.

Untitled_364

3. On this play here, Daryl just missed.  It happens.  Had he been able to lock the guy up, this most likely is a big play.  Ikard would have taken his guy by the hole, and let Trevor cut back left off of his block.  Then Trevor would again been cutting off of Rips block to the left.

Untitled_365

3. (cont.) You can see all of the green grass and open space if we execute there.

Untitled_366

4. I had mentioned in my initial thoughts how Derek has to work on his technique.  more specifically dropping his hands.  Look here at Derek’s hands.  You’d like to see those elbows bent and the hands up by his chest ready to unload on this cat as he gets closer.

Untitled_367

4. (cont.) If Derek’s hands are cocked and loaded, he buries this punk as he tries to pull this crap (sorry I don’t like defensive players unless they’re on my team).  The o-state defender puts it into four wheel drive(using his left hand to maintain balance), and beats Derek around the corner.  The rest of the o line holding court.

Untitled_368

4. (cont.) Again, this never happens if Derek uses those hands and buries the guy as he tries to turn the corner on em.  He’ll learn it. If he gives Trevor more time here, he may be able to take off and run a little bit.  Saunders would have come open over the middle if Trevor draws that linebacker to him.

Untitled_369

5. This is a designed give, designed as a read option.  Daryl has a guy playing on his outside shoulder and crashes hard on the dive.  Nila let’s Barnett spin out on em, and it ends up looking like we got dominated but…

Untitled_370

5. (cont.) Look at the path that Trevor would have had if he had pulled the ball.  Now I’m not in the huddle, but if it’s not a called give, it’s a bad read because Daryl, Rip and Brannon have their guys locked up with Jalen going to seal that other guy off up top.  I bet ya that Trevor scores here if he pulls the ball or had the option to.

Untitled_371

6. Here on 2nd and short, the blue arrow is Derek Farniok.  He does a great job on the down block, which I think is one of his strengths.

Untitled_372

6. (cont.) A frame later, you see the top wall, Derek sticking with his man, and another great block on the bottom by Brannon Green.

Untitled_373

6. (cont.) Keep in mind that this was on a 2nd and 1 with the line of scrimmage at the 32.  Brennan picks up a gain of seven out to the 39.  Look at Bronson makin’ tortillas again.  Does anyone on the team play harder??  Oh yeah, guess who’s finishing off his man SEVEN YARDS DOWNFIELD IN SHORT YARDAGE?  Farniok.

Untitled_374

7. This is just a wham play.  Like a trap, but you’re trapping with your h-back (Rip).  Check the bottom arrow Nila…

Untitled_375

7. (cont.) The blue arrow shows why Calvin Barnett is just a really good player.  Look at the green grass outside if we give Trevor the ball on the bootleg…

Untitled_376

7. (cont.) Right here I’d like to see Brennan take a drop step and bounce this outside.  As he would have done that, Jalen earholes that cat on the hash, and Trevor is a lead blocker for him.  Also, one of my old college teammates and I were texting, and he was actually one of my running backs.  He said, did you see that cutback lane to the left?  Check it out…

Untitled_377

8. This is the play I mentioned in my initial Farniok thoughts post.  O-State runs a twist bottom side with Calvin Barnett going outside, and the stand up defensive end going into the b gap.  Note that the d end is backed off of the line of scrimmage just a little bit.  This gives him a better angle to get straight down into that b gap.

Untitled_378

8. (cont.) Right here, Bronson has to realize the play design, and understand if Barnett wants to go outside, to just let em go.  We’re going zone read right, so there’s no way Calvin can change direction quick enough to get back in on the play.  At this point, Farniok’s screwed, and the only one who can physically make the block is Bronson.  Essentially Barnett is blocking Farniok, and the o-state defense is banking on confusion which is what they got.

Untitled_379

8. (cont.) By the time that Derek is able to fight across there it’s too late.  Derek ends up looking bad when it wasn’t his fault.  Nila ends up pushing his guy past the hole here, and that’s why I drew the line going straight through him, since a second later he isn’t there.  Had we executed on the twist, we gash them here.  I’m not saying we score, but you never know if Clay’s able to hit the gas as soon as he got the ball.

Untitled_380

9. Great punt returners always make the first guy miss.  Jalen does ya one better here and makes two of em miss…

Untitled_381

9. (cont.) Literally, as quick as I could pause it, Jalen’s north and south and past those two guys in the last picture.

Untitled_382

9. (cont.) Right here, Ahmad Thomas makes THE block that springs Jalen.  Second time he’s sprung Jalen for a return TD this year.  Florida kid doin work!

Untitled_383

9. (cont.) At this point it’s all over, but I just liked taking pictures of it!

Untitled_385

9. (cont.) Sweet, sweet cowboy tears…

Untitled_387

9. (cont.) Coach Norvell getting up high!

Man,when that ball is snapped ,things start happing in hurry.know wonder it takes a while to develop a offense lineman.thanks

  • Pokerman says:

Love these trench warfare things. Any plans to do some on the defensive side?

  • JD says:

    Nice work JY

  • Homer Simpson says:

So the Pokes were all up in arms about the Thomas blocks, screaming the refs should have thrown the flag, Has anyone seen the actual game film and whether the Pokes have anything to cry about?

    • JY says:

Yeah, he fell in front of the guy he was blocking, so I know that his head was across in front. The call could’ve gone either way. It happened so fast, and he fell in front, so I don’t know how they call it. Ahmad was FLYING when he made that block. Heck of an effort.

  • AlexOU says:

    Love it, thanks as always.

  • Pokerman says:

Something I’ve been wondering for a while since we started running the zone read – why would they ever call the zone-read play with no option? That is, require the QB to hand it off or require him to keep it. Why not read the defense and do what their response dictates.

  • Lesslie Stanford says:

Really glad you pointed out how Derek played. And that cut back lane was huge I remember seeing it in the game and thinking why did he not hit that.

    • JY says:

Yeah, my teammate, Jason Friend, was a great running back for us at Missouri Southern, and one of the smarter backs you’d see. He’s texting me during the game saying did you see that!? I bet that Brennan’s able to beat that guy downfield and break a big one if he saw it.

  • Kdubracing says:

Seems like every time you do one of these, the right side of the line has very few breakdowns. With Farniok getting some meaningful minutes now, it’s looking pretty bright for next season. It looks like they block the read option pretty well already. Almost every bust seems to be on a called give/keep and the lack of an option kills the play.

    • JY says:

Yeah, I don’t know how you call a read option, and don’t give the guy the option to keep the ball.

      • Kdubracing says:

Something I don’t have the knowledge to see, but maybe you can if you get time. On the plays where it looks like a called give, do they block that the same as they do when it’s a true read option play? Or do they adjust the blocking knowing its a give? I would think if they block it the same, it’s pretty stupid to call a give.

      • CoachStauder says:

Malzahn does the same thing at times and they run it about as good as anybody. Sometimes you just want to make sure one or the other gets it I guess…

  • Kuzi says:

This site is great. You guys display actual football knowledge and stay away from the sensationalism of the media or the blind negativity of the message boards. This is my new go to OU site.

I agree (not that you need me to) that play #5 was probably a designed handoff, mainly because they blocked everyone up and didn’t leave a man to read (at least looking at the pics above).

As far as the offense is concerned, I like the way Knight is executing and I remain puzzled by the people who say he is a poor passer. Early in the season I will agree that he did not look good, although I think that was more him being unsure with what he was seeing and rushing his mechanics. Since he is come back in later in the season, I feel like his mechanics are better (a little bit of a long release but not too bad) and his passes have been reasonably accurate. I would like to see them test the middle of the field more with the passing game, especially since the running game has been so effective and will draw up those linebackers and safeties.

    • JY says:

Great post man. Even Chris Spielman was chirping about us needing a tight end over the middle of the field in the 2nd quarter to force those safeties back. Thanks a bunch, and we do hope that you make us your go to man! Thanks!

      • JSam says:

Can’t wait until your second half warfare when we… wait for it… COMPLETE A PASS TO A TIGHT END! Given it was an out route, but still. Should have been a second but for a play by a Poke DB.

Good stuff, JY. I am guessing Derek has NEVER played with his hands up. Dude is so tall that was probably the height of most of his HS opponents’ pads! It’ll be good to watch those little technique things get cleaned up and to see him excel.

        • JY says:

Thanks Sam! I’ve been working a lot of hours this week, so I may have to wait till this weekend to get to the 2nd half. We’ll have it up early next week. He’s still gotta do some footwork stuff and just play with solid technique. Sink those hips, and he’s good.

  • DCinAZ says:

Excellent work guys. New to this site but I’m diggin it!

  • Jesse Wall says:

Thx !!! Love reading your breakdowns…..

  • CS says:

    Hi JY,

Kudos on these trench warfare’s, it is very clear that you put in a lot of effort in doing these, be assured that we fans are truly grateful and imbibe this with utmost interest.

I just had a question on the defensive side though: the last two games, in the first half, the OU run defense has been giving up some chunk yardage, but after halftime, we have managed to minimize this somehow, the q I have is: how much of it is half-time adjustment and how much of it is the other team offense going away from the run game.

If it is half-time adjustment, why is it not implemented from drive-to-drive?

    Thanks again!

    • JY says:

I think a lot of it is that our guys are so young defensively, that Coach Montgomery, Kish, Stoops and Wright, just have to re-focus them on being gap sound. Like in the first half against TX, KS, KSU(pass-game) and ND, the guys tend to give up some things because they’re so young and inexperienced. It’s funny you ask this because K and I were texting about it during the game Saturday. You can see the improvement even between possessions, and that’s really encouraging. It tells me that the guys are listening to the coaches and have bought in to the teaching and instruction. We have a very engaged team.

  • L'carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I love the Wham concept. The 49ers use it quite a bit. They use their TEs, Delanie Walker (when he was on the team) and Vernon Davis, to make the wham block. OU has run this play quite a few times this year.

Bama’s NG isn’t quite as good as previous years, and doesn’t seem to be a like a Suh or McCoy who’s trying to rush upfield to get a sack. Thus, I wonder if the Wham concept will work against Bama.

    Thoughts JY?

    • JY says:

I don’t think we’re going to out quick them anywhere. I’ll be honest with you in that I haven’t watched a ton of Bama. With that I’ll refrain until I’m able to see what I think. I’ll dig out some film on them over the next few days and next week and see what we can do. I know that Jesse Williams was an animal for them inside, is he still there?

      • L'carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Williams isn’t there that I recall. It’s Ivory, Stinson, and Robinson (he played some) at NG.
