The Big 12 Championship Is A Great Idea!

Image via Big12sports.com

The Big 12 is receiving a lot of criticism and ridicule regarding it’s decision to add a championship game starting in 2017. I won’t go into details about the different knee-jerk reactions and their arguments, but I do want to explain the situation in very simple terms, as I understand them. I’m here to tell you, it’s a GREAT IDEA!

First off, the College Football Playoff revenues per conference are approximately $79,000,000, already a sh*t-ton of money! If a conference’s team(s) reach the Playoff semifinals, they’re awarded an extra $6,000,000 per team. Also, if teams reach the Cotton, Fiesta, or Peach Bowls, a conference is awarded $4,000,000 per team. So, what exists is a situation where the conferences are primarily enriched by the totality of the new Playoff structure and less so by earning spots in the Playoff semifinals or lesser bowls. That leaves the rest of a conference’s revenue subject to it’s own program and television rights deals.

What the Big 12 has decided by hosting a conference championship game, is to mitigate the risk of being left out, more so than improving their chances of being invited! That is ‘convexity’ with regard to failure and risk. The risk is failing to get invited, thus losing an amount approaching about $8 million (1 team), if you count the money paid to help the teams’ expenses. However, with the addition of a championship game gauranteeing an added $20 to $30 million, it becomes a ‘no-brainer’, no matter how silly the structuring of the league may seem going forward. That’s dollars and my 2 cents, folks, what think you!?

I see your point Gabriel,i just feel its just not in our best interest to stay.

        • Gabriel Alcocer says:

It may not be, but in the short term, important to improve league viability, IMO. Besides, this may also help ‘grease’ expansion plans w/ big bad Texas.

      • ccmosaic says:

Only reason to stay in Big 12 is if we are able to add 2 power five teams that bring competition and tv viewers. If we were able to do that I would say stay but honestly I do not believe that will ever happen. In the end this conference is just slow playing what will happen – explosion.

I agree with the game and reasoning but only having 10 teams negates everything. It’s stupid with 10 teams and a round robin. Greed is getting the better of this conference andits killing it slowly.

No casual fan should have any interest in the money side of football. Thats what toned the conferences initially. So for an extra 4 to 8 million for Kansas i get give a care less.

Basically Money ruined a good thing with several good conferences in college football. I loved the traditions. the debates on whos conference was the best, the natural rivals were your conference mates state borders touched. The debates about 5 to 6 million more per school shouldnt real care to us we just want to see good football.

  • Bob Edwards says:

The problem with this conference has nothing to do with the number of teams, whether we have a championship games or whether we have our own network. The problem is that we are married to a narcissist (UT) and we keep letting him abuse us for his own pleasure. That kind of relationship doesn’t end with the two still married, it ends when the abused gets out of the relationship. It’s time for us to get out.

    • Gabriel Alcocer says:

???.., abusive, huh? Interesting, never knew Texas owning 3rd tier rights and a network would be perceived as violence of sorts.

      • OceanDescender says:

        Metaphor

      • Bob Edwards says:

Abuse takes many forms. The point is everything they do is purely out of self interest and not the interest of any of the other parties. TAMU and NU got out because they got tired of this conference being controlled by Texas.

        • Gabriel Alcocer says:

For the record, I felt LHN was a long-term strategic error. Also, I’m in the camp that dissolution may be the best long-term option and that OU and UT should seek membership in the BIG. Just saying…

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, my point was as much about abuse as it was the narcissistic nature of Texas and how the only way to deal with a narcissist is to get away from them.

          • Rick says:

I’m in the crowd of lifelong fans that doesn’t want any association with texsa anymore. I won’t spend any more money on the RRR, I don’t care if we never play them again.

          • Cav66 says:

I like playing them, but am tired of being played by them to their benefit and the rest of the conference’s detriment. They can take their network and ram it up Bevo’s a$$ while we go elsewhere (hopefully with a yearly OOC game so we can continue the rivalry).

          • Rick says:

I understand the game on a rivalry level, as I have stated before, to the best of my memory, my 1st OU game was somewhere in early 60’s at a OU/texsa game. I get it. I just don’t want it anymore.

          • Cav66 says:

Fair enough. I don’t see a big problem continuing the rivalry after we move to another conference. We played them every year for decades when we were in different conferences.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I would much rather go back and play NU again and drop UT.

          • Cav66 says:

I’d happily take both, but I guess if I would have to choose, I’d take the Nebraska rivalry back. Great tradition, better fans, and I respect them more. I do love having the opportunity to beat Texsa every year and I really like not liking them. Either way, I think we would be wise to separate ourselves from Texas in terms the conference we choose.

          • McAttack says:

it’s always kinda been about recruiting DFW metroplex

          • Cav66 says:

The DFW exposure could be preserved by continuing to play them in a yearly OOC game. Back to the past.

          • Gabriel Alcocer says:

            Blasphemer!!!

          • Stephen Dale says:

with you 100% on this thought……

          • Mark_in_VA says:

OK, I can’t go that far, but I’m totally for reverting back to the relationship of the Big 8. We play them once a year, IN FOOTBALL ONLY, and that’s that. That gives us a chance annually to beat on them to our satisfaction.

          • Stephen Dale says:

OU should get out and should have done so several years ago….OU doesn’t need Texas to accompany them into a different league–nor is OSU needed….

      • metzker says:

        Its texsa Gab!

    • Rick says:

I’ve always referred to them as “arrogant”, your term “narcissist” is much more accurate. You go Bob!

    • BoomerDave says:

And you certainly do not “fix” a bad marriage by having more kids; i.e. add more teams.

    • Stephen Dale says:

      WELL SAID. COULDN’T AGREE MORE………….

  • Bob Edwards says:

The problem with this conference has nothing to do with the number of teams, whether we have a championship games or whether we have our own network. • OceanDescender says:

It’s good that institutions will be bringing in more revenue I guess, but from a fan’s perspective they’re already playing everyone. I’ve never been a fan of adding a CCG to a ten team round robin, but of course that’s exactly what the big 12 decides to do.

  • Framoka says:

Its stupid, what if team x is undefeated and in the top 4…and loses to team y and neither go???

    • rainydaze114 says:

      C’est la vie

    • rainydaze114 says:

      …or don’t lose.

    • Bob Edwards says:

But that is the situation all the other conferences face. That’s part of why they ding us for not having a championship game. It’s not fair.

      • ccmosaic says:

Same argument the Big 12 had when the other conferences were not playing a championship game.

    • Gabriel Alcocer says:

The conference is still richer for it. What if there is not a CCG and no team gets invited? Oh yeah, that happened…

      • rainydaze114 says:

That was before the “one true champion” had a literal meaning…

      • Boom says:

What if we play in the CCG and Baker goes down. Season over. Great.

        • rainydaze114 says:

What if we play ULM and Baker goes down?

        • Gabriel Alcocer says:

What if you played in the national championship game and your starting quarterback gets hurt during the first series? Wait…

          • rainydaze114 says:

They wouldn’t have even been there if Bradford didn’t get hurt… 😉

          • Boom says:

We in the Natty and getting paid a lot of money.

          • metzker says:

            texsa still loses that game

          • Boom says:

I understand the finances. We all want more money and this would generate a lot for OU. However, it’s falling on deaf ears since most of OU’s fans want out. We could make that same if not more money in another conference. Thanks for your insight.

          • Gabriel Alcocer says:

Agree.., why many Texas fans want out as well!

          • Birddawg says:

Is that for Texas independence or for a specific conference?

          • Dick Bump says:

Are you inferring Texas fans are…..human!

      • Framoka says:

Gabriel, I think the point is that most of us could care less about being in the Big 12 at this point (and hate Texas who has the leverage with their own sweetheart deal = LHN). Thanks for the post, at least we can kick this around some more.

      • ccmosaic says:

        ONCE.

      • Framoka says:

perhaps none of those teams deserved to get in? It changes nothing for the positive except money IMO and could be negative for the Big 12 if the higher rated team loses.

  • soonerborn says:

Stupid to have if you are already playing everyone. Thought the big 12 was the only conference with a true #1 champion, or so they claim

  • KJ1123 says:

SO……if a 9-0 team loses to a 6-3 team in the championship, but overall the 9-0 is 12-1 and ranked in the top 5, the 6-3 team wins the B12 and the 12-1 team goes to the playoffs if voted in by the committee?

    • Bob Edwards says:

It’s pretty much the same as the BCS. You fix this by giving conferences automatic spots and let them decide who they want to send.

      • rainydaze114 says:

You’d need at least a 6 team playoff for that.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Eight teams, five P-5 conference champs, the best team from the G-5, and two wildcards with no more than two from any conference.

      • ccmosaic says:

4 conferences, with each sending their champion. VERY SIMPLE BUT WILL TAKE YEARS TO GET THERE.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Do it now with an eight game playoff. All other divisions of football have more games than that in their playoffs.

          • Birddawg says:

4 super conferences. play within conference.. win your conference. go to a 8 team playoff. 4 champions, 4 best overall.. bye week. Like it lets do it

          • j l says:

They would have to cut a regular season game. They already said they wont go to 16 game seasons(aka the same as NFL regular season).

          • Bob Edwards says:

Just like they always said they would never go above ten games when I was a kid, or eleven games in the ’80s, etc. They say a lot of things, and then do the opposite.

          • j l says:

You ask kids to play as many games as the NFL does(the non playoff teams anyway), and the amateur argument gets really hard to fend off.

Plus with the whole concussion and health of football players really being in the spotlight right now.

Thats 2 really big issues that would be hard to overcome at the moment.

In 5 years, if 1 or both of those arguments dies down? maybe.

          • KJ1123 says:

Yeah I dont see them expanding games, playing one playoff game is pretty tough on these kids as it is.

          • j l says:

exactly. Though i wouldnt mind cutting a pointless OOC game to move to an 8 team playoff though.

        • Birddawg says:

4 superconferences. Play within conference.. win your conference. go to a 4 team champion playoff. Like it lets do it.

        • Rick says:

Your suggestion is valid, but, the argument will be a 12-0 Notre Dame team or even a 13-0 conference champion of a non member of the “4 conferences” that has a good win over an “in conference school” champion with a loss or two. It’s sounding more feasible to me, to use the Leach proposal of a 64 team playoff at the end of the season, like BB.

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

It’s simple. ND can join a conference or they are not eligible to be selected.

          • Rick says:

            Like that’s going to happen.

          • Stephen Dale says:

its past time for Notre Damn to sh** or get off the pot. By that I mean if ND wants consideration for a possible playoff spot, let them join a conference and play a commensurate schedule that qualifies them to represent that conference——and not get a playoff spot as an INDEPENDENT play service academy teams and a partial conference schedule ( like the ACC situation ) ….its past time for ND’s favored status to end….

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

They’ll bring up the idea that in some years the second place team in a conference may be better than another conference champion. Then what?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well, I get what you are saying. But remember one of the prime criteria stated by the committee is that you have to be a champion. If they are going to stick to this, losing the Big 12 title game would eliminate any hope of being in the final four. Except if you are clearly better and have one loss less than the 5th ranked team in the committee’s eyes.

  • Jeff says:

Please tell me how the big 12 gets 30 million a year now. Think you get 28 million for a title game so that bring the total to 26.5 million or so to each team. Where is the extra 3.5 million coming from??

    • j l says:

We are guaranteed to get at least 1 spot in a top 6 bowl(conference champion), which he said is worth 4 million per team.

      • Jeff says:

They were already in one of the top 6 bowls against the $ec. Bowlsby bamboozled Boren

        • j l says:

That would still explain where the extra money was coming from, would it not?

          • Jeff says:

No, because they were already a part of the top 6 bowls so it was already built in the 23 million

          • j l says:

Well we have had 2 teams reach top 6 bowls the last 2 years(TCU and baylor 2014, OU and OSU 2015), so that would be an extra 4 million per year, beyond the built in money.

Dosent mean we will earn that every year, but we have the 1st 2 years.

  • Scott says:

Anthony Hines is visiting OU tomorrow , I don’t if you guys know but Kyler Murray and Devin Duvernay are cousins and apparently Kyler has been recruiting him hard to OU . Also worth noting Duvernay other top school was OU before he committed to Bailer.

    http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/college/football/article81997087.html

    • KJ1123 says:

That would be a CRAZY Super conference.

      • 47 Straight OU Know says:

However, Texsa would find a way to screw it up as well!!

        • KJ1123 says:

And they’d be mad that they don’t get their stupid irrelevant network.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

No,No, They would probably want to be a part of SEC Network and keep the LHN. Double the money right?

    • Cav66 says:

If the steers go to the SEC, we need to everything we can to go to the B1G. We do not need to switch conferences only to be stuck with texsa again. We could have a great built-in OOC rivalry game every year just like when we were in the Big 8.

      • ouwooferman says:

        CAV66 – Dead on perfect!

      • soonerinks says:

Agree except for the order. We go to $EC and let Fexas have the B1G. Nebraska would welcome them with open arms.

      • cush creekmont says:

At some point, if texsa diddles around too much, the only conferences that will take them and their giant head will be the leftover 12-2 & ACC also rans or the PAC because their network makes less than the LHN in total.

        • Slim Sooner says:

          Ha ha! You said diddle.

        • Cav66 says:

I’m sure some fool, blinded by dollar signs, will take them in. I just don’t us want to be part of that foolish conference (fool me once…).

          • cush creekmont says:

Cav, my point is the two largest players may actually “fill up” before the “stuck up girl” realizes she’s not that cute. With few options out west to get to the important number of 16 teams (4 leagues total), the PAC will get desperate and take texsa along with three of their bag-boys schools.

          • Cav66 says:

No argument, but I would have missed a prime opportunity to throw out a dig at texsa and the fact that they have a truly annoying tendency of blowing up college football conferences (among their many truly annoying tendencies).

    • cush creekmont says:

Delaney has been running rings around the SEC lately. That MIGHT prompt them to make a preemptive move, but don’t discount the BI6 moving on 2 or more ACC teams, ND, and OU, KU or texsa. There is no reason to stop at 16 teams if you are a conference “mad scientist.”

    • Birddawg says:

18 team super-duper conference. I like it. Lets do it.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

Great plan. Except the SEC is smart enough *not* to want whorn. And whorn will never give up The Precious (otherwise known as LWN) which the SEC would force them to do.

Make it OU and either KU or WV and I’m so there. FSU is out since UF is already in, and Clemson is out since USC is already in. They aren’t going to violate that one-state thing (other than the founding members already in).

  • Rene Goupillaud says:

We are in this silly situation because the league failed to act a few years ago. The issue shouldn’t be about just what makes us the most money. Rather it should be what gives the fans the best experience. We traded long time relationships like Nebraska, Colorado and Mizzou for WVU and TCU. It’s all about what’s good for Texas. I could care less about Texas. I want games against teams I value, TCU isn’t among them. Adding Houston or Cincinnati or UCONN, does nothing for me.

After nearly 40 years in California, it’s clear that the ones in charge think small and safe. I think they should be bolder. Don’t talk about doing something, ACT.

After my generation passes, will there be enough folks who want to see games against weak, meaningless teams? I don’t think a fancy stadium will be enough. College football will have to adapt and the ones that move first will do the best. Golf clubs are already facing this challenge. Young folks don’t want to spend 4 to 5 hours on the course plus another hour or so travel and prep time. Among the proposals, make it a 6 hole game.

  • Lewis Hendrick says:

I think the best way to structure this is to have the top ranked team in the league in the regular season host the championship game at their home field. That way you are rewarding that team for winning the regular season since they will likely be facing a team they already beat. Imagine another OU/Texas game in either Norman or Austin? Also gives teams like WVU a chance to host a game in their area of the country instead of having to come play a neutral site in Dallas etc. if they win the regular season. Otherwise we would end up with many years like last year where OU has to play OSU in consecutive weeks on a neutral field. The same team they just beat on the road by 33 points. If OU has to rematch they should at least get to host that game in Norman. Just my two cents…

    • McAttack says:

      rematch games are never good

      • Lewis Hendrick says:

Agreed. Personally not in favor of the championship game at all outside of the money for the league. But if its going to happen in a league with 10 teams I think this is the most fair way to do it.

        • McAttack says:

so if there’s a tie in standings, game goes to the team that played on the road in rs

          • rainydaze114 says:

Tiebreaker should be head to head though, right?

          • McAttack says:

            if divison play happens

          • cush creekmont says:

Try on that 3-way thing again with this scenario. Back to “mythical standings” and “if a team that beat a team is within 6 spaces” or if they have their own network or lovely orange uni’s, they get in.

          • rainydaze114 says:

Point differential? Just like soccer 🙂

    • rainydaze114 says:

OU/Tex in Norman would be the rowdiest thing ever.

    • cush creekmont says:

Problem if WV, KSU, or OSU ever “win.” there won’t be much money from the small stadium.

      • ouwooferman says:

OSU can sell out what they have. LOL

      • Lewis Hendrick says:

There were many years with 1000s of empty seats in kansas city. Whichever team wins the regular season will undoubtedly at least sell out their stadium.

    • Rick says:

      Good Idea!

    • Mark_in_VA says:

That’s trying to make sense of the senseless. I agree that, *if* you feel you have to have a CCG, then rewarding the top seed with a home game is the way to go. But, darn it, we can squeeze an extra dime out of a neutral field, and so by golly that’s what we’ll do! Ka-CHING!

  • BoomCity89 says:

It’s going to be weird to split the league up into 2 divisions for 2017. I’ve seen the below arrangement on a lot of sites. My first thought was if there’s ever a season that we don’t end up at the Big 12 Championship game then something is wrong ha.

    OU
    OSU
    ISU
    KU
    KSU

    Texas
    TCU
    TTU
    Baylor
    WVU

    • cush creekmont says:

NO way (as in ZERO) that texsa allows that it has to travel to WVU regularly. Likely for texsa to push for OSU or OU in the south and WV in the north. Since there really are few good teams anymore, it is going to be difficult to set up a “fair” set of divisions.

      • BoomCity89 says:

You would think they would have UT and OU in separate divisions in order to make it to the championship together… that is if UT can make it. I wouldn’t mind having WVU in our division, just not sure who you would take away from ours.

      • Matt Wally Wesley says:

From what I’ve seen, it’s still going to be a round robin. Texas, like everyone else, will go to Morgantown every other year. They just won’t ever face them in a championship game with these divisions.

    • McAttack says:

      big 8 division
      SWC division

    • Roy C says:

That groups together the remaining big 8 teams

    • Roy C says:

That groups together the remaining big 8 teams

    • Cav66 says:

So, essentially OU vs. the Texas state champion every year for the Big XII championship. OK. I know I’m discounting the possibility of a Mountaineer uprising, but I don’t see that happening too often.

    • rainydaze114 says:

Are there even going to be divisions though? Doesn’t make sense to me.

  • Jason Vos says:

    OU
    Oklahoma State
    Texas
    Kansas State
    Kansas

    Baylor
    TCU
    Texas Tech
    West Virginia
    Iowa State

  • cush creekmont says:

Since nothing the 12-2 does now makes sense. (Wishful thinking on the last section)

    NORTH
    Oklahoma State
    Kansas State
    Kansas
    Iowa State

    SOUTH
    Texsa
    TCU
    Texas Tech
    West Virginia

    BANNED AND DEAD
    Baylor

    GONE TO THE BIG LEAGUES
    OU Sooners

“I’ve just been talking to Texas, OU and TCU,” the No. 42-ranked player in the ESPN 300 said. “I’m pretty sure (the decision) will come from those three schools.” When I committed to Baylor, Oklahoma was my number two so I have always liked them,” Duvernay said “Kyler is talking to me about Oklahoma now too.”

    • ALar03 says:

Duvernay is gonna be a stud… he is big and fast! Would hate to see him go elsewhere, I was amazed by his ability when i saw him practice for the all american game

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Remain unconvinced. As I said, the National CFB media does not respect the Big 12. First, they argue that the Big 12 doesn’t have a title game they don’t have to go through the rigors of a 13th game! Now, we get a Championship game and they are saying it was a dumb idea.
