Super K’s Recruiting Summary (contd.)

Last week I put together a recruiting summary for y’all but didn’t have time to finish it so I’ll go ahead and do that now. Here is the first half: https://thefootballbrainiacs.com/?p=1782

We’ve been dropping recruiting information on y’all in various posts so we figured it would make things easier for readers if we periodically did a recruiting summary to bring some of it together in one convenient place. These are some thoughts on Oklahoma’s chances at some of their targets based on the most recent information we’ve acquired from our sources:

Jonathan Thomas – Coach Kish is going to be visiting this incredibly athletic LB this morning (Friday morning). If Thomas can get eligible OU should be able to land him. And it would be a HUGE pick up. Thomas is an incredible athlete who is still very raw but has tremendous upside and can play any of the LB spots.

Coltin Gerhart – This was a new offer that went out this week. Coltin was committed to ASU as a safety but from what we gather Oklahoma has actually offered Coltin as a QB. We’ve got a former college QB that we will have take a look at Coltin’s film. This is an interesting offer because it might be sending the message that Oklahoma wants to continue running their QBs in the future – even if it’s not the foundation of the offense. And after seeing all the injuries at QB this year perhaps OU feels like it can’t hurt to throw their hat in the ring for another.

Steven Parker – I updated this last week but I did talk to a source this week and was told that the general feeling is still that Steven Parker will end up at Oklahoma even if it doesn’t happen immediately. The feeling about 2 weeks ago is that it might happen in December. Talked to the same person a couple days ago and he said he doesn’t know anymore. Not sure what that means but folks still seem to be confident that Parker ends up at OU. And after his showing at the state championship game you can bet the coaches want him bad!

Ainuu Taua – Also updated y’all on Ainuu last week. As we suspected he ended up committing elsewhere this week (UCLA). For more information please check the first half of the recruiting summary above. This was just an impossible situation. To land Ainuu OU would have had to do something they just wouldn’t normally do. But the word we got that if they didn’t get Ainuu Oklahoma was going to wrap up recruiting on the DL. Coach Montgomery is out there making sure they’ve got an early start on the 2015 kids.

Marquise Overton – Speaking of 2015 kids Marquise Overton is someone who everyone is projecting to end up at Oklahoma and for good reason. In fact we’re told the only reason it hasn’t happened is because a particular family member wants him to hold off. In my opinion that is a mistake because Coach Montgomery is not waiting around for anyone. They are out there aggressively recruiting. And I know that Que wanted the OU offer really badly and it was a huge relief to him when he got it. We’ve all been big fans of Que. Here was a write-up JY did about Que just before he was offered by Oklahoma: https://thefootballbrainiacs.com/?p=968

Juwan Dowels – Dowels is the most recent cornerback offer. Oklahoma sent him an offer last week and Coach Bobby Jack visited him earlier this week. Dowels wants to get out Florida so Oklahoma has an opening. And he’s already set up an official visit to Oklahoma for January so things are looking good at the moment.

Miciah Quick – Checked in with my source on Quick and still got the word that Quick is Oklahoma’s to lose. Coach Perry likes Oklahoma and likes his guys ending up at Oklahoma. I was told Oklahoma went out to visit Quick this past week and things we went well so right now Oklahoma is just going to have keep recruiting him and unless something drastic happens it should swing their way.

Cornelius Floyd – All I got on Floyd is that he’s a) smooth and b) Coach Bobby Jack visited him earlier this week. Floyd does have a visit set up for Arkansas so you’ve got to think that Oklahoma will get a visit as well seeing as he doesn’t seem put off by the idea of leaving the Florida area. Getting Dowels and Floyd would just add to an already stacked at athletic DB core.

So looking at how things are shaking out on the recruiting front Oklahoma currently has 17 commits. We’re going to assume they want at least 25. We know they’re holding a spot for Parker and Quick so that would put Oklahoma at 19 commits leaving about 6 more spots. So the latest information we have is:

DL – they’re done for now (0)

LB – heard they want at least one more (1-2)

OL – they want at least 2-3. They want Tretola as an interior lineman. They visited him this past week. And they need at least 1 HS tackle. They visited Frison earlier in the week. Last I heard they felt like they had a fighting chance but it’s obviously going to be tough. We’ve been talking about it and the guy who would be a game changer is Arkansas OT commit, Jovan Pruitt. I haven’t spoken to Jovan’s coach in a while so I need to but Jovan is the kind of kid who could provide depth from this first day he steps on campus. The other Utah OL Oklahoma offered last week was Jackson Barton and I talked to a source that knows him and he said flipping him would be really really difficult. Both Barton’s parents played sports for Utah. The only opening is that Barton’s dad has been big on training his kids from a very young age and wants them to be at the place where they can be most successful in terms of sports development. Either way it seems like a losing battle right now. Denzel Ward is still a possibility but I’ll have to do some checking on that front. I know a lot of people are concerned about depth at OT – and that’s understandable. And part of the fear is that people assume Josiah St. John isn’t very good since he hasn’t played. Ace saw in practice in the fall and he said that Josiah is incredibly athletic for a big man. He said “he was just lost because he was new”. But the kid can play. He came into the program late. Coach Bedenbaugh will get him ready. So at least for next year we should have Josiah backing up at the OT position. And now Farniok is starting to get some reps. So they should have a legitimate 2 deep at OT with Daryl and Tyrus coming back. But obviously they’ve got to get some young guys in here ASAP to start building depth for 2015 and beyond. I talked to a source and he assured me that “they’ll get some guys this year” but who that will be…not sure yet. (2-3)

CB – I’ve heard they want to 2 more but I personally think they’ll be fine with 1 (2)

RB – I have heard different numbers here in terms of how many they want and my guess is that is because they’re probably trying to figure that out. They feel good about Ford but as we’ve mentioned Ross has had some growing up to do and that’s always a concern because you’ve got have depth at the RB position. My guess is they’re going to want to take at 2 hear. If everything checks out with Warren then my guess is he’ll be one of them. Have no clue where things stand with Starks. I know a guy who works in the local media in Colorado and has spoken to Starks and he didn’t even know. All he told me was that Starks has a few school he’s considering – don’t need a “source” to tell you that 🙂 (1-2)

TE – They wanted Ijalana to come in and help right away and that may still happen. He decommitted because of some confusion about a class he needed to take and he wasn’t sure where Oklahoma stood. But Coach Martinez said that OU was adamant they still want him. (1)

So as you can see the numbers are starting to get pretty tight. The class OU has put together is a really good one but there are still some spots they need to fill.

Do you think we are going to take two QB’s in this class even if Gerhart goes elsewhere?

  • Kelly Turner says:

    Great read!

  • Chris Branvold says:

What are your thoughts on Parker and A&M? I just think it would be a hard pill to swallow, watching the best player leave the state.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Hard, bitter, whatever adjective you prefer to describe that pill. It would pretty much suck, IMO. I’m sure K can speak to it better than I can, but I think most believe A&M is a threat. Though to what degree, I suppose it depends on who you’re talking to. As K said in his post though, the prevailing thought still seems to be that ultimately he winds up in Norman.

      • Sooner_Ace says:

with ol’ Johnny most likely leaving…that “could” help the cause of the good guys…I hope

  • SoonerBredCD says:

“This was just an impossible situation. To land Ainuu OU would have had to do something they just wouldn’t normally do.”

Now that he’s committed elsewhere, can you expound on this?

  • territorysooner says:

I know it’s not a sexy area, but what do you think they do with regard to special teams? Boulware previously offered a K and a P who both committed elsewhere. With a couple extra ships available, it seems like they might want to get something in the pipeline.

    • Sooner_Ace says:

of course it is a sexy area, Did you see Bedlam this year?!?! J/K am curious myself, Punter has been bi-polar this year.

      • Indy_sooner says:

It seems they found some sort of rhythm later in the season,by having Hunnicutt do the the long ones and Hodgson on the shorter field punts.

Both need to figure out how to get those kicks out quickly. I have a feeling Bama will be all over this part

        • ctsooner says:

Jy knows as well as anyone about Jack Braught from Duncan. There is a strong feeling that he could be special in time, but he’s very young. He’s a very mature kid who’s 6-3 175 or so with low bf. I watched him kick in person at Yale his Sr yr of HS and he looked the part of a top flight punter. His leg whip is very strong and quick. I’ve been told that technically he’s is outstanding and his drops looks very good. He’s got a great understanding of the game and is highly athletic (google his all conf wr and db info). He was offered by the Ivy’s as well as other D1 schools. Sailer ranked him as one of the best in his class in regards to upside (ie specializing on punting and not playing both sides and kicking 50yd field goals). He’s also a lefty so the spin is hated by return men. He also loves practicing the Aussie punts (as soccer was his background before football). He works with some great instructors, all of whom have said he will be very very good. He just needs to keep getting stronger as do all frosh, but it should be fun to watch the competition come Spring.

          • Indy_sooner says:

I actually followed Jack’s recruiting. His Sailer training vids showed alot of promise and I was surprised that he decided to walk on here.

I played a little rugby in high school and that kicking style gives you ridiculous versatility when coupled with a strong leg. It will be interesting to see how the battle turns out especially now that we have Boulware

          • ctsooner says:

Jack is as big a legacy as you can get. BTW, his little bro is 8th grade and show’s similar promise with leg and is also a great athlete. Different builds. Next year will be the 100th year anniversary that someone from his family has been on the field at OU (not a continuous 100). From Great Grandfather, to Grandfather to Father. It’s a great story that should be written about next year.

    • JY says:

Well we keep hearing good things about some young punter out of Duncan ;-D who is a freshman for us now. I think we may be set there for a while.

      • territorysooner says:

lol. I just like the path Boulware was starting to follow by creating a pipeline. While I do not think a scholarship needs to be offered every year, like QB, I do think they need to think about filling these positions when your starters are going to be seniors to allow for a year of development. As these positions typically include a high number of walk-ons, hopefully we have a couple of kids who are able to step up and compete for the next couple of years.

  • Ed Cotter says:

I was shocked when I heard that OU was offering Coltin Gerhart as a QB. I Have seen him in person and he doesn’t throw that good of a ball. Have also spoken with a high school coach that has seen him many times and he was more than surprised that OU was offering him at QB. He can run, but doesn’t have great pocket presence and doesn’t throw a very good ball. He just benefitted by having tremendous athletes around him. He played three years at Norco High before transferring to Vista Murrieta after his dad was fired as coach. This is the younger brother of Toby Gerhart, the Stanford RB that finished 2nd in the Heisman voting a few years ago and plays with AD in Minnesota. Could be that OU is hoping he may become a Taylor Martinez type player, recruited as a DB, but wants to play QB. Comes in and wows everybody. Just my two cents since this is a kid from my area.
Love the site and you guys do a great job of getting out info. My go to site for Sooner recruiting news.

    • Super K says:

Ed – thanks for the inside insight brother. The word I’ve heard is that he took a huge step forward this year. Nebraska wants him as a QB as well. Again, thanks for offering some up close insight.

      • Ed Cotter says:

Happy to do it. Gonna be interesting to see what happens if Gerhart ends up in Norman with so many other guys in front of him. Working with Heup will only make him a better passer.

        • Ed Cotter says:

Super K, what do we know about Heupel and the Arky St. job? Did he interview today. Have heard some rumblings about it. Any confirmations?

    • Sooner_Ace says:

“He can run, but doesn’t have great pocket presence and doesn’t throw a very good ball. ” This explains the 2013 campaign/situation as well…

    • Atlantasooner says:

His highlight reel does a great job showing off his arm then. His arm strength looks great and nice touch on deep passes. He’s a powerful zone read run QB that’s for sure.

      • Ed Cotter says:

Highlight reels are supposed to show the good stuff. I have seen him play live, as well as on TV and he is super athletic as a runner, just now there as a passer. Against Corona Centennial in the CIF Championship he was short on some throws, behind and he did over throw some guys, so his arm isn’t the issue. It’s more about accuracy and having touch. Centennial doens’t have a very good D either. He’s a great athlete though, and Heup will work wonders with him.

  • OUFan123 says:

Great work as usual, and I’m excited Jordan is posting on here now. He was great at CCM, glad to see him here.

I heard that Warren had a good visit to Toledo. Do you think if everything gets settled, OU has a shot at him (since he doesn’t really have any “favorite” school)? And I also heard that Mixon got an offer from Bama. Looks like he might alter his Top 4 schools.

    • Super K says:

Thanks! Miciah is nice! Definitely have a good shot at Warren but if everything looks good in terms of eligibility we wont be the only ones wanting him that’s for sure.

  • Sooner_Ace says:

    Nice write up, excellent work

  • OklaSooner says:

Love the site! Good to see Jordan here. I’ve been a lurker on CCM and here for a while. My go to source for Oklahoma football.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Good to see you ’round these parts as well

    • lebval15 says:

I second that. I’m new to this site since everything went down at CCM this week. I figured since my main source of info was leaving CCM I needed to find a new site to follow. Looks like i found the right one.

  • soonerthunder says:

Thank you! Great stuff! BTW, will Thompson b/able to play versus Ala? And TK?

  • pitbull17 says:

Enjoyed the read. Overton and Thomas are beasts! I really hope they both end up at OU.

They way y’all write up recruit evaluations here at TFB is superb.
    However.
Not to be a party-pooper, but I got too wrapped up in last year’s recruiting wars so I’m taking an early New Year’s Resolution to ignore the recruiting wars and just wait until after signing day to read the evaluations of those who actually put ink to paper. The coaches must enjoy roller coaster rides that jump the tracks to be able to handle recruiting. Holy mackerel. Keep that blood pressure under control.
Then there is the matter of getting them to campus and to the first week of classes.
All of you who have the stomach for the recruiting war have my admiration, FWIW. See y’all closer to the Sugar Bowl. I think we’re gonna surprise the nay-sayers.
