FOOTBALL

His absence at yesterday’s one and only practice in which access is granted and this well-written article make Frank Shannon’s future with the program sound somewhat ominous. (NewsOK)

OU is No. 19 on this list of the CFB programs with the most NFL talent. (NFL)

*It’s sounding as though TCU’s Devonte Fields won’t be a problem for Big 12 offenses this year. (Twitter)

*So even though it would mean basically less than nothing, we should probably go ahead and retroactively award Eric Striker the Big 12 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year award, yes?

If you’re up for it, very long read on Texas’ Charlie Strong. (ESPN)

RECRUITING

2015 OT & OU offer Madison Akamnonu confirmed yesterday what TFB told you back in late July, that he will be announcing his commitment on Aug. 24th. (Twitter)

OU reportedly offered 2015 LB Amonte Caban (Smiths, AL) yesterday. (Twitter)

Too well done not to share, IMO (some NSFW language, fyi).

This guy just gets it. That goatee tho.

The NFL talent ranking guy was calling Trevor Knight “Travis Knight”. *closes article*

    • Jordan Esco says:

      lol

    • Big Higg says:

I was reading a review on the teenage mutant ninja turtles movie and the yahoo writer referred to Splinter as “Splitter.” That was the end of my reading session also.

    • James D-Space says:

      Beware of Travis Knight…. Lol
      What a knucklehead!

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I probably shouldn’t have read it after your warning. OU has lacked a dominant playmaker since Adrian Peterson? Demarco Murray was pretty good, and has done well in the NFL.

      • vargo05 says:

Not to mention Ryan Broyles who in spite of ideal size and speed was pretty much impossible to cover.

      • soonernation says:

        And Stills is chopped liver?

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

Yeah, forget about that Bradford guy too. I heard he won some kind of award or something (was it the Theisman?). Anyway, that Gresham kid…forget about him too.

    • L'carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Oh, I don’t know. Tyler Kite is pretty good. He can run and throw.

  • CcrBoomer says:

Ou might be a little late to the party on Caban.

  • Mike Reed says:

If the Frank Shannon saga continues into the upcoming season (which I’m pretty positive it will), do you think that Stoops will allow him to play since he’s still with the team, practicing and not serving a suspension? If Shannon is on the bench and doesn’t play, then that would be an ominous sign for his future.

  • Kody K. says:

A complete shame we have the Shannon/Mixon cases in limbo at a time of such great expectations. The team would be in a better place with these issues resolved, including DGB.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Not ideal, but also not as bad as it would have been in other years. A positive thing is the younger players get an opportunity to shine.

    • JJsooner1 says:

Yup and Baker Mayfield too!!! What kind of person wouldn’t “release” a player not on scholly??? I would answer but this is a public forum:-)

      • Chase Korenek says:

That’s exactly the way I’ve been looking at the Mayfield situation. I can understand if it’s a scholarship player that “committed” to play for you, but a walk-on non-scholarship player not being able to transfer just blows my mind. Does Kingsbury have anything to do with Mayfield not being able to play??……rhetorical question! 😉

  • Joe says:

Kersey’s article is all speculation. Nothing to write about so they continue to beat a dead horse. At the end of the day I think Frank will be fine.

  • Randy White says:

Long time viewer, love the site although it’s very addictive. The wheels of justice do grind slowly and I was wondering who might take Shannon’s place in case he doesn’t play.

    • EasTex says:

I believe that would be Jordan Evans, who played quite well last year. After him the depth gets weak.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I was at a trivia contest last night, and one of the questions was who is the only running back to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season in both college and the NFL. It was multiple choice. I had the right answer at first, but later let somebody from the team talk me out of it.

  • Is there practice today?

  • vargo05 says:

Striker may have been the preseason choice for Big 12 defensive POY, but if Jordan Phillips is 100%, he’ll be an All-American and Big 12 defensive POY, IMO. He’s unstoppable if he’s healthy.

  • Zack says:

I just want to say I am really happy about that offer to Caban looks like a stud and if his crystal ball has him going to miss state then he has got to be a guy ou can go get.

  • blaster1371 says:

I read that article on Shannon last night. The article either stated explicitly or implied that of found having violated the title nine (?) codes he gets expelled from the university. The past articles also implied that if the girl had wanted to press charges the DA would have taken the case; it was her declination that stopped prosecution. The only thing I can think would cause this to drag on would be if the victim must be present to be interviewed by the panel and she is not available until school begins. I think The odds of Shannon playing again are less, than 50-50 and that’s based purely on the vibe I’m getting from the reports. Didn’t Stoops say illness kept him from the spring game and then a few days later this came out?

    • Jordan Esco says:

“Didn’t Stoops say illness kept him from the spring game and then a few days later this came out?”

I can’t remember if it was the spring game or something else, but you’re right in that something nearly identical did happen previously.

      • soonermusic says:

Not positive, But I thought he said “dealing with personal issues.”

        • Jordan Esco says:

I think you’re right, but same difference IMO

          • soonermusic says:

I get what you’re saying, but my interpretation of coach speak is that “illness” means the guy isn’t felling well, whereas “dealing with personal issues” could be anything from “had to go home to see mama, everything’s fine” to “went on a three state shooting rampage and probably won’t be available to play this Saturday.” 🙂

    • Mysterio1 says:

Shannon has had some of the worst cases of flu ever.

    • JJsooner1 says:

Aaron Colvin had alot to do with his progress. Same style in my view. Both have hips and speed beyond a DC’s wildest dreams.

  • Ok…. Why havent we heard anything else on the Mixon situation yet?

  • Jackson1006 says:

If Striker is a nickelbacker type and Shannon is gone, who will start at our 4 LB spots? Alexander, Evans, Grissom and…?

    • vargo05 says:

Striker isn’t a nickleback. He will be in one of the 4 LB spots with one of the other guys coming off the field in definite passing downs, depending on personnel matchups, to make room for whomever is the NB.

      • j l says:

dont be so sure about that. Striker at the nickel and grissom at LB gives us a lot more size, and pass rush ability, than we had last year. It wont be our base scheme, but dont be surprised if they dont have some packages.

      • ND52 says:

Striker and Roy Williams from 2001 are the same size.

    • Zack says:

Bond maybe but they would probably start 3 linebackers plus striker so it just depends how they want to list him on the depth chart I guess. He will either be the 4th linebacker or the 5th DB.

    • BB says:

A typical 3-4 does not include a nickelback, so you wouldn’t see 4 LBs and a nickel on the field at the same time. The nickel is included in a 3-3-5.

    • Boomer4life says:

      me

  • paganpink says:

“Apparently it was worth it” Heh heh Going to be hard on his homeowners insurance rates since that’s who they will target, though!

  • John Garner says:

I can understand — but not appreciate — the delay with Shannon. It’s the feds. But I don’t understand the delay with Mixon, especially if they have video of the incident. Either he assaulted the girl or he didn’t. Seems pretty simple. Thanx for the news Jordan. Your efforts are always appreciated.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I’ve heard the issue may have more to do with whether it gets classified as a hate crime or not. I guess the possibility of gay slurs may make it more than just whether he threw a punch.

I don’t have any more information than anyone else…just repeating what has been suggested to me.

  • Brian says:

How long is a bit? 😉
