Sooners News Daily 6.13.14

Uh-oh, it’s Friday the 13th. Forgive me for being the umpteenth annoying person to point that out to you today.

FOOTBALL

At a caravan stop last night in his home town of Wichita, Blake Bell said his expectations for this year are a “national championship.” I don’t know about all of you, but I’d be just fine with that. (NewsOK)

A brief interview with Bell also from last night discussing his transition from QB to TE. (KWCH)

Quinton Carter is finally back on the field for the Denver Broncos. (Denver Post)

‘No room for BYU in Big 12 without an attractive 12th team’ (TW)

RECRUITING

I suppose you could just as easily have scrolled down on the front page, but in the event you might have missed it OU did pick up another 2015 commit last night. (TFB)

Torrance Gibson shuffled his top schools, talks his extended trip to Knoxville, and dropping Ohio State. (cleveland.com)

OU b-ball reportedly hosted a 7-foot JUCO center yesterday who also just so happens to be the cousin of Longar Longar. (Twitter)

OTHER

Yeah, um, if this is real then holy **** (as the guy says at the very end of the video, so, you know, NSFW and all). If it’s fake then, it’s a well made fake.

You have to respect that literally no one around him is into what he’s doing, and yet he continues to just power thru.

    Not buying the shark video.
Where in the hell did you find my old baseball video’s?

  • Jim says:

The Vols board was saying yesterday that per TG’s interview, Tennessee is the clear leader right now. Auburn is his backup.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Not surprising, the kid just spent four days there. So unless he had a miserable time it’s only natural they’d be out in front.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I know it’s still a while to go for the 2015 kids, but it’s hard to see the Vols not getting Gibson; they’d have to really mess up, I think.

      • Jordan Esco says:

If he’s not fazed by them already having another QB in their class, then at this point I’d have to agree w/ you.

The more I see of his tweeting about his recruitment, the less excited I am. I know it’s part of being a kid and being at the center of attention, but the immaturity level seems pretty high. If he likes Tenn. best, then why bother putting out a list with tosu at the bottom and complain about who’s been calling or not calling. I realize it’s not a good idea to base an opinion on a few items in the media, and his talent is undeniable, but the more I read, the more I wonder whether he will be able to be a “team first” player.

Couple of questions about Gibson, I apologize if these are repetitive of past questions by other members. So do we have an actual shot or is it pretty much Tennessee all the way now? Are there any major concerns as to why OU wouldn’t want him as a part of the team? I think I remember reading that there was an altercation between him and another classmate in high school. Thanks!

    • Jordan Esco says:

      1) Yes, OU has a shot. How much of one is debatable, but if they felt they were truly out of it they’d move on.

      2) No major concerns that I’m aware of or, again, they’d have backed off already (like tOSU appears to have done).

      3) Super K explained the “altercation” in yesterday’s Open Post. https://thefootballbrainiacs.com/ou-oklahoma-sooners-football-recruiting-kenyon-frison-torrance-gibson-anthony-wheeler-jace-sternberger-jake-pickard

    • Gary Robbins says:

We really need to get him to OU on a official visit. A good beat down of Tennessee this year would help. For what it’s worth their board was going crazy over Tim Settle when he listed Tenn. as his favorite-which is now Clemson. I’m with Jordan, if OU felt no shot they would move on. Good things come to those who wait patiently.

    • Super Keith says:

We have a very legitimate shot at Gibson. The biggest thing working for OU right now is that we haven’t signed a QB in this class, and all of the other teams on his list have. Still, it’s going to be tough to get him away from Tennessee, but (just as has been said) a good beatdown of the Vols would help.

He’s been to campus, but it was over spring break and nobody was there. The good part to that was it allowed Heupel to spend a lot of one-on-one time with him. However, he needs to see the campus when things are rolling, and that could really help too.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Longar Longar! Doesn’t he speak five languages or something crazy like that?

    • Gary Robbins says:

Not sure but his name is one of my all time favorites. Can envision his teacher asking for his first and last name!

  • blaster1371 says:

Re the little boy dancing…more adults would be less stressed out if they could just not give a rip and dance to some tunes as the mood strikes them…so long as it is NOT rap music. Clip made me laugh, thanks.

  • vargo05 says:

Man, I strongly dislike Bob Seger.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

Yeah, I’m not a big fan either, but I seriously needed that laugh! Thanks, Jordan.

  • EasTex says:

Very fond of Blake Bell, as a person and a dedicated Sooner.
I hope he has a great Sr. year and is injury free.

    • blaster1371 says:

Me too. The dude has a solid “team” attitude. You can tell the type of guys he is by the close friends he had on the team: Millard and Ikard. I hope he lights it up at TE and gets his due reward with a NFL draft slot.

    • soonermusic says:

yeah, he continues to come across in all interviews as a very likable, well spoken guy.

  • SoonerPhins says:

I could see the shark video being real. Great Whites are not ones to attack humans, now if it was a Bull Shark, then you would have some problems. They will tear you a new one.

    • Amayetli says:

For reals, don’t mess with those bull sharks. And that title is misleading, that great white let him live.

    • EasTex says:

I was stationed in the Philippines and was hanging out in Manila one day with a friend. We decided to visit this huge outdoor market near the Bay. There was a big buzz in the crowd that a fishing boat was bringing in a huge White Shark and everyone was crowding around where the boat was docking.
Most wanted to see it and others were wanting to buy the meat. When they hoisted the huge shark up everyone gasped in awe. Then they cut it open and among the many things that fell out were the obvious remains of a nearly digested human.
I never saw a crowd disperse that quickly.

  • SamPato says:

I’m an adopted Sooner via Marriage from Manly in Sydney, Australia and have spent plenty of time at “JumpRock” which features in that shark vid… whilst there are sharks in Sydney Harbour the video is definitely a fake. Extremely rare to see Great White’s in that part of the world!

  • Jared Tyra says:

That poor guy just waved his hands at the shark (if it was really there) and called that fighting it off… The white looked like it was ignoring him after the initial splash haha
