Sooner Squad 17 Update – Game 2

Sooner Squad 17 (SS17) was a very hyped class for the Sooners. It featured some good talent and a lot of promise. What will be exciting is to see the development of these players during their time at OU. SS17 started out with 27 players. Although one is no longer on the team, the late additions of Dillon Faamatu and, for the purposes of this post, Jeff Badet made it 28. (Yes, I know Badet is not technically in the recruiting class).

This is our weekly look into how that class is performing and what their contributions were in the most recent game.

ss17 – game 2 played

– Jeff Badet

– Robert Barnes

– Tre Brown

– Grant Calcaterra

– Dillon Faamatau

– CeeDee Lamb

– Tyreece Lott

– Kenneth Murray

– Tre Norwood

– Trey Sermon

– Marcelias Sutton

Against a very talented Ohio State team in a game that had a close scoreboard for much for the 60 minutes, 11 players saw the field from SS17. That’s pretty darn impressive.

Some of them came in at least partially due to injuries, but that’s the way football goes sometimes. Also, to only have 2 fewer play in the Ohio State game as compared to the UTEP game speaks volumes; they weren’t just playing because of the opponent, they played because they had earned the playing time and were gaining experience. With that said, there were fewer of them with much stats.

SS17 – Game 2 Stats

– Jeff Badet: 2 carries, 5 yards, 5 receptions, 82 yards, 171 all purpose yards

– Robert Barnes: 1 UA tackle

– Grant Calcaterra: 1 reception, 21 yards

– CeeDee Lamb: 5 receptions, 61 yards, 75 all purpose yards

– Kenneth Murray: 1 UA tackle, 1 A tackle

– Trey Sermon: 17 carries, 62 yards, 3 receptions, 23 yards, 1 touchdown

Those contributions accounted for:

– 51% of the carries

– 64% of the rushing yards

– 52% of the receptions

– 48% of the receiving yards

– 33% of the receiving touchdowns

– 66% of the all purpose yards

– 11% of the total tackles

That’s not too shabby, particularly on offense. There’s also a case to be made that your offensive MVP, not named Baker Mayfield, could easily be Trey Sermon. Sermon shouldered a huge load on Saturday and proved himself well.

Oh hello Mr. Stiff arm.

All in all, great week for SS17. The Sooners have a few games against very manageable opponents ahead, so look for them to continue to be involved.
