Did she call him Maker Bayfield at the end??

  • J.r. Kamm says:

Had no idea that Kenneth Starr was the President of Baylor University.

    • Stephen Dale says:

Kamm ; neither did I…….it proves once again, lawyers have connections and land on their feet…..

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Not only has the luster worn off the Art Briles toy, it looks like what’s underneath is lead covered by a layer of scum.

    • paganpink says:

That Grantland article is dead wrong on several things, though, First of all, Bill Clinton was most assuredly NOT impeached for having consensual sex. He was impeached by the House of Representatives for perjury; lying under oath, when the DNA on her dress proved him to be a liar after having spoken said lie in a sworn deposition. Peterson is not trying to make Briles a “fall guy” because if what he says is true then he is simply speaking the truth. And the NFL SHOULD BE deploring Chris Carters fall guy statement. Acting as if the rest of us are naïve fools for not believing “everyone does it” doesn’t make it right even if it WERE true, which I don’t believe is the case for a second.

    • Stephen Dale says:

Cush ; same situation in Tallahassee, Fl with FSU……………..

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Jordan, I already scolded my brother for posting that Karate Kid video yesterday. Daniel LaRusso is an American hero, and should be treated as such.

    • Mike Reed says:

The American hero status of Daniel was apparently “waxed on” by Mr. Miyagi only to have it “waxed off” 31 years later. The truth will always come out and karma will karate chop you right in the nuts.

  • blaster1371 says:

Without a doubt CT and TK are dissappointed they are not the starter but they had all best keep getting better. Mayfield has not played a whole season and the back up has had to step in for Knight in each of his two seasons.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I would also guarantee Mayfield will miss some snaps this season. Nice to know we have some talented QB’s behind him.

      • blaster1371 says:

I agree, the other two QBs need to be kept invested and get some snaps when a game is in hand. If what the coaches are saying is genuine- that all three QBs are close in skills, etc- then hopefully that means the whole playbook is available and the QB run game is not put on ice.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I think we have moved away from the read option haven’t we? That experiment died. OU is back to more of a 2000-2008 look. So, while the Qb may take off from the pocket, the idea that he will be running often is unfounded in my view. We didn’t have Sam and LJ running.

          • Matt says:

do you remember Landry’s naked sprint against Nebraska in the ’10 big12 championship? NOBODY saw that coming..Don’t think they ever ran him like that again after that play.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t think any of us know for sure. Why not run a few zone read plays each game? That can do NOTHING but help the OU offense, and it can certainly be done out of the context of the spread.

We’re going to be multiple. Do a lot of things. That might include zone read, or it might not.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah. I suppose as a wrinkle.

          • blaster1371 says:

True we didn’t have Sam and LJ run, but neither was very good at. I agree the read option is in the past but if a defense is giving the QB run to OU then it might need to be used.

          • Nate Broadus says:

            That’s the impression I got.

I don’t see us going back to the zone read as anything more than a gimmick. For better, or for worse, we’re an Air Raid team again.

The last time OU scrapped an experiment and went back to the basics, it worked out pretty decently (1985 and the return to the ‘bone brought OU a national championship).

We can only hope history repeats itself.

  • Kevin Fielder says:

Interesting that although Mayfield is named the starter, Trevor is named a Captain. SHows his overall leadership skill is still in play and that his teamates would trust him coming in if needed.

  • guest says:

Obviously Speaking: Mayfield is 1a, Knight is 1b and Thomas is 1c. The announcement was that Mayfield is to be the starter in “Game 1”. The competition is very close but he is most comfortable in the Spread Offense. He is most vocal which also gave him an edge. Mayfield’s current challenges are to score, stay healthy and reign in any impulses to become a “gun-slinger” leading to turnovers. If he can do these things, then he can keep the job. IMHO.

  • Stephen Dale says:

I expect Mayfield to be the starter thru game #2 . the Tennessee game should be an indicator whether he or somebody else will lead the team after Knoxville…….

  • SFlowers says:

I have been a longtime follower of TFB. I have been to and supported OU at tons of games including at Notre Dame and the Sugar Bowl and also haves ties to Baylor. I am completely disappointed that Jordan Esco would circulate that Grantland article bashing Briles and Baylor. It was a completely false and inaccurate account of what happened. I applaud the media outlets, such as the College Football channel on sirius that have risen up in defense and called this a “media witch hunt”. This particular article was only out there to incite hatred and try to bring down a rising program. Briles brought in a young man and gave him a second chance (I believe Stoops did that to “DGB”) after Coach Peterson asked him to. David Smoak backed up Briles statement with a great article, of course that won’t be shared as widely. ( conversation w/Pearland FB Coach Tony Heath on former Oiler Sam Ukwuachu, his conviction & his talk w/ Art Briles. http://ow.ly/Rg05h ). Sooner fans are also waiting anxiously for Frank Shannon to be eligible, how is this different? Has he ever been asked to not go to class? Was his scholarship pulled. No.. The girl in that case was afraid of the fallout if she proceeded. The player at Baylor was immediately pulled off the team and never played a down. The school allowed the legal system to proceed. There was no “cover up” it was handed over to the police. I have supported OU through all the controversy last year, I am asking the media to not incite more hate, but encourage women to feel safe to come forward with privacy and dignity, even if a athlete is the one to commit a crime.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

There’s miles of difference between how OU handled DGB, Frank Shannon, and Joe Mixon on the one hand, and Baylor and Sam Ukwuachu on the other.

      • SFlowers says:

wow.. you really don’t get it do you? Oh and feel free to explain the difference, I would be interested in your educated thoughts..

        • jimintexas says:

If you think the way your Dean handled the sham investigation of the female was anything similar to how things happened at OU, then you are the one who does not “get it”. Baylor is the same as Miami of the 80’s. Dirty, but when exposed come out swinging. Baylor has a history that shows they have no limits.

          • SFlowers says:

I can’t even respond.. but please don’t spew hate and then say you are part of the Baptist church. The entire Baylor fan base did not commit this crime. Just like the entire Sooner fan base didn’t commit the crimes committed by sooner players..

          • mizzOUstu702 says:

Wow, you’re a bit delusional and clearly biased, dude. I have no dog in this hunt–I could not care less about Baylor, either way. But if Art Briles says he didn’t know what he was getting in Sam Ukwuachu he’s either an idiot, lying, or both. Not to mention the dean’s irresponsibility in the case too. Take a step back and look at the facts. Stop bringing up what other schools have or haven’t done – it doesn’t matter in this case.

          • jimintexas says:

I am not talking about the Baptist church. I am talking about a Baylor coed who lost her virginity to a deviant playing football at Baylor. If pointing out the sham job of the Dean is hate, then you are hyper-sensitive. I have not gone into the fact that she was told that if she did not want to still be in the study groups or classes, she had to make the changes. Or, the fact that her coach reduced her scholarship is married to one of the football coaching staff. Again, what Baylor allowed to happen to her, can’t be defended from a Christian perspective. They are guilty!

Listen, instead of attack. There is 0 way you can defend the way she was addressed, by any school. But, when it is one that claims the claims that Baylor does, the damage is much greater than the school or those who blindly follow it. Baylor leaders made their choices. But, their failure is bigger than the school

          • SFlowers says:

And what player raped 4 coeds a few years ago?

          • jimintexas says:

Since you are one of those blind to reality, his name is Tevin Elliott, a Baylor linebacker. Google can be your friend. But, then you have to deal with reality, so maybe not

          • SFlowers says:

Again.. slightly off in in your account.. time to quit spewing hate. There are no squeaky clean teams and athletes are getting away with sexual assault on campuses all across our country. This is the issue that needs to be focused on.. not attacking one school.

          • jimintexas says:

You are still saying that addressing the un-Christian, much less Title IX violation in the way this coed was handled is hateful. Using other schools as an excuse for Baylor, is wrong. You are Luke-warm in your attitude

          • SFlowers says:

I refuse to spew hate.. Instead I will just pray that God can soften your heart towards others and work towards the better good.

          • Boom says:

Spewing hate? When is stating facts spewing hate. If you want to talk about spewing hate, that is what Baylor administration did to this girl.

You have to admit, this was a huge blunder from the git go on everyone’s part at Baylor. However, when you have $266 million invested and good PR, you can’t afford anything like this. Baylor tried their best to hide but they were found so as the game goes, they are “it”.

        • BoomerDave says:

SF, do you not find it odd that Briles never inquired of Peterson as to any issues Sam may have had at Boise? Peterson said he called Briles, not the other way around as one might expect, and told him about the allegations against Sam. Briles said that never happened, then later acknowledged that Peterson might have mentioned something about it. Who’s lying here? Peterson has been consistent with his story, Briles has not. What kind of cursory Title IX investigation did Baylor do? Nothing!!! The Shannon and Sam cases are night and day. In the Shannon case, the police declined to file charges and OU, on their own, did their mandatory Title IX investigation and suspended Shannon because their investigation found that it was more probable than not that an assault occurred. In Sam’s case, Baylor found that nothing happened and it took the police, the DA and the jury to prove them wrong. The judge wouldn’t even allow the Baylor investigation into evidence because it was a joke!
As for DGB, OU did a thorough investigation. Stoops and Pinkel talked various times about DGB’s situation. OU talked with police and the DA on several occasions as well. They were fully apprised of the situation before agreeing to give DGB a second chance. Baylor and Briles did none of this. Never talked to anyone or tried to find out anything.
To be a hatchet job, there has to be lies told by the writer. What are the lies here? Everything written is undeniably the truth! It’s a hatchet job only because you don’t want it written about your beloved university.

          • SFlowers says:

Thank you for your insight, however, you are inaccurate in your timeline. Briles initial statement was that Peterson had called him and they discussed the situation. Briles also called the high school coach to see what else might be known. (that is verified in the link I listed above) The high school coach verified that Peterson had given him the same information. You can search those facts for yourself and not just grab headlines from unreliable sources. Boise St. also provided a written statement that Sam was eligible to return and compete for their school. There was no mention of any violence at Boise and there were never any reports or charges concerning violence at Boise at the time of transfer on the written request for info that was sent by Boise. And that was also testified to in court. As far as DGB and Shannon.. both victims were afraid to proceed in a legal court. DGB was brought in with known physical violence toward women and Stoops immediately went to work with OU attorneys to try to get him eligible with the NCAA. The Mixon case.. well why I don’t have an opinion on that one, she never should have hit him either.. that video will never be released by the state of OK

          • Eric Hoffpauir says:

What does the HS coach have to do with anything? And the form doesn’t really prove much – it just says he was a student in good standing (ie made academic progress). He very clearly had disciplinary issues and Petersen told him as much.

Stoops handled the cases with his players much differently. They were publicly held to a higher standard in order to remain with the team and on campus. Shannon actually lived in Denton and went to school and worked out at UNT.

          • jimintexas says:

There was a lot about Sam at Boise, regardless of “official documentation”. Baylor fans have no excuse for the way the girl was treated.

          • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Yes, she had to change her schedule to avoid him (not the other way around), and didn’t receive any leniency regarding her own scholarship.

          • BoomerDave says:

Not true in regards to Shannon. Victim went to police and pressed charges. DA declined to file based on the evidence. Also, he was suspended from school.

          • SFlowers says:

Sorry if I got that one wrong. I am correct on DGB. In regard to Shannon, he is now back and the fans will be cheering him on without a thought of the girl he hurt.

          • James says:

So it’s a “witch hunt” after Briles because of course he’s innocent but “cheering him (Shannon) without a thought to the girl he hurt”…. I guess you are aware of things not all of us have access to if you know Briles is in the right and Shannon is guilty of something he was never even charged with….. Get a life pal.

          • Clint says:

You’re a Baylor fan; we get it. Now please go back to a Baylor web resource. Thanks in advance!

          • Slim Sooner says:

You are on the wrong site to keep defending Briles and Baylor’s situation by attempting to compare it to OU and our players. You are in the wrong place to criticize Jordan Esco for posting any article he chooses to share here. This is an OU forum, and I’m not sure what you are trying to accomplish with your posts here today. You are clearly a Baylor fan, and that’s fine. There are other sites where your views might result in more sympathetic commentary.

    • Malicong says:

I didn’t get any of that out of the article at all. It was pretty on point. It is not enciting hate to point out the chances Briles is taking with some of the players he is bringing in to the program. It is no different than what FSU, Alabama, LSU, Ohio St, OK ST, OU, etc have gone through when a questionable player breaks bad. If Baylor wants to be one of the big boys they have to take the bad with the good. Stoops was questioned non-stop about DGB, Shannon, and Mixon, so it isn’t a new thing. If Shannon does something stupid, then Stoops will get raked 10X more than Briles is now.
I seriously doubt anyone at Grantland (or Esco) is trying to bring down a program with an article that is rehashing a common discussion from the last week.

      • Jed says:

        I’m with you, Malicong.
What did grate a bit, however, and what has probably inflamed some of the folks who didn’t like the article, was the rather ham-fisted attempt to associate Baylor’s religiousity with willful blindness, hypocracy or general social backwardness.
I’m no friend of Bible-thumpers or those who attempt to interject their religion into public policy; but if there’s a story here it can stand on its own two feet and doesn’t need the forced Baptist bashing that I, at least, read in the article..

    • thebigdroot says:

Not trying to get in an argument, your emotions on this subject are understandable. I would like to point out that that article was posted in the comments yesterday by someone. That is probably why TFB posted it. Don’t know for sure but that is my thought. There was a lot of comments on it so they probably thought it was worth posting for others to see.

Edited: meant to place it here

      • SFlowers says:

Thank you for your response.. It was not meant to incite an argument. I don’t know all the truth and certainly want that poor girl to find peace and justice so that she can move forward. The media doesn’t help a victim feel like she can come forward without huge fallout. Especially if you are at a big football school.

    • Clint says:

      Meh. No one asked you.

    • EasTex says:

9 sexual assaults or assaults against women by Baylor football players since 2010.
One 20 year conviction in Jan 2014 for Tevin Elliot after raping five Baylor co-eds and Briles called Elliot “a sweet young man.”
What is most disturbing is how Baylor supporters waste no opportunity to deflect and distort what is going on down there, be it on sports forums, newspapers or magazine articles.

Moan and groan in your own sand box.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

Why you gotta go bring thought and reason into this? Let’s just deflect blame where we can.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

maybe they should rethink the Christian in their school name.

        • EasTex says:

I don’t think so, but they really should examine how thuggish their football players have become.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

Saw the Karate Kid vid on reddit yesterday and laughed my brains out. Also, Ash vs. Evil Dead…seems legit. I’ll be hanging w/ Bruce Campell and Sean Astin this October at Comicon in Tulsa. You can be jealous if you want.

    • Oscar says:

      That Vid was fantastic! Haha!
Actually, the kid with the blonde hair gave an interview a year after the movie, and was speaking about how he is a devout Christian, and that people started to view him as a nasty kid because of the movie, and that he is against violence and was continually having to tell people that he is not the character in the film.

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

My kid’s a big nerd, so he loves all things nerdy. I took him to Comicon last year and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy on Harry Potter) was talking about the exact same thing. He said the kids at his school were mean to him because of his character in the film. I guess I never thought about all the crap you would have to deal with as a kid for playing a character like that.
