Can’t wait for the Wisconsin game at Lloyd Noble. Place will be rockin’!!

    • Jim says:

Reminds me of the OU/Maryland game back in ’02. Won by 16, but we were up by 30 at one point, I believe. Should be a great atmosphere.

      • Brad Warren says:

Right, we crushed them. They of course went on to win it all that yr. We could’ve had them in the championship game if only we had been able to make free throws late against Indiana. That one along with the 88 KU championship game still bother me. Not to mention countless Orange Bowls. Lol.

        • John Garner says:

About the Orange Bowls, I’m not sure but is it possible that Switzer lost more NCs than he won? Sure seemed like we were in the running every year back then. Good times.

    • hemisooner says:

Coach Kruger has the Bball program headed in the right direction

      • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Yes indeed he does. Exiting times for B-Ball. Seeing as I always pick them to go all the way to a NC every year this makes my odds a little better.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Wow, regarding Bolden.. one of those teams is not like the others… Impressive on Kruger’s part to have us in that mix…

  • cdzendolet says:

I booked my flight to Knoxville for the Tennessee game – this season can’t come soon enough! August is going to be a long month.

    • Jim says:

I want to go to that game SO bad. Beautiful place. Tailgate on the river. 110k fan atmosphere. Bucket list stadium for CFB fans.

    • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Should be an awesome time for you. Represent Sooner Nation for us. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • CS says:

Have fun man! I might drive there, the atmosphere should be electric (I am hoping similar to the FSU game of 2011, and the results too).

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Good morning fellow Brainiacs, Just wanted to get this in early regarding the Youngquist decision. No matter where the young man may choose to play football, the sun will still come up tomorrow and it will still be a great day to be a SOONER!!!!

    • hemisooner says:

      Exactly

    • EasTex says:

Nice graphic to go with your excellent outlook.

    • MoJoOkie says:

Aw geez, you’re saying that we’ve got no shot? Noooooo!

      • Brad Warren says:

I believe he’s just saying either way it’s always great to be a Sooner.

      • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Well allow me to retort, I definitely thank we have an excellent chance at landing this young man. I’m just not going to freak out if we don’t get him.

        • MoJoOkie says:

I was just practicing my panic so I would have it down just in case. The kid said throughout that it was Oregon. If we get him I’ll be elated, but just between you and I, it won’t surprise or panic me if we don’t. Just some Friday fun before the weekend.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

I hear ya. We can definitely use this young mans talents, and in my opinion looks like he would be a great leader for us coming in. And we definitely need more leadership on this team than we have had.

          • MoJoOkie says:

Yeah, he would be a great one to get. Like so many have said, he and Kelly could anchor the LB position in a great way.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Don’t forget about the HULK either. Man this gives me goose bumps just thinking about it. Bringing back the days of shut out defense.

          • MoJoOkie says:

            Hell yes.

        • Stephen Dale says:

the Rivals site agrees with you……….

  • Katyboomer says:

So Daxx is getting to play this year. Is it just me or does it seem every other team gets a pass from the NCAA, but OU? How is Daxx getting to play and a walk on that transferred not. Things that make you say hmm

    • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Eas Tex correct me if I am wrong here, But we haven’t gotten respect since the 50’s.

      • Katyboomer says:

I think a lot of it stems from TV rights

      • EasTex says:

I don’t agree entirely, I do remember people saying “Welcome Back, OU” after that sensational October 2000 run.

        • 47 Straight OU Know says:

This is true, but now we are back to everybody saying how the sky is falling.

          • EasTex says:

I got my hate on for the ‘hunchback leprechauns’ the other night, by watching this game that I listened to on the radio in 1957.
            https://youtu.be/h0zChuVIMp0

          • Cush Creekmont says:

I can’t watch that game. I yell at the players and Bud, but nothing has ever changed. Now, I just re-watch the LAST time we played them.

          • Rick says:

You should have been around in the 80’s when Switzer had three consecutive mediocre teams. He followed it up with a pretty good team, then a 1 loss NC team. People were calling for his head back then in 81-83 and into 84. Talk about sky is falling. It really did fall for a while after he left. I actually quit watching games during the Schnelly days.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Yes 85 win saved Barry’s bacon, Im not that young but I seen it in the 80’s, I will be a man this year i’ll be 40. :-0 Hell I watched Schnelly just to see what kind of pompous A** he was going to be.

          • Rick says:

HAHA I’m nearing the man and a half mark, with a birthday next week. I laughed at the end of your last sentence “he was GOING to be.”

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Any time he opened his mouth, it was like a box of chocolates you never knew what you was going to get.

          • Bob Edwards says:

The last time we won or shared a Big-12 title was in 2012. That’s what the Mayans meant by the end of the world

          • EasTex says:

I lost respect for the Mayan prognostications when they didn’t predict their own demise. :-0

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well if you don’t believe that 2012 was the end of the world. You haven’t been reading this board much.

          • EasTex says:

I have been reading, but am never swayed by the ruminations of an ancient death cult that no longer exists.
            Or trolls.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Is there a difference? Death cult and trolls that is.

          • EasTex says:

The main difference in my statement is about the extinct death cult, not the contemporary.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Actually, that explains a lot. Doesn’t this look like Stephen Dale?

            http://www.latinamericanstudies.org/maya/jade-mask-rio-azul.jpg

          • EasTex says:

I believe you are onto something.

          • MoJoOkie says:

You were around back then? No wonder you’re tired.

          • EasTex says:

            I ain’t tired…physically.

      • Brad Warren says:

        Forget about the 70’s?

      • Brad Warren says:

I wasn’t thinking about how the probation stuff may have affected our respect level during that decade but as you well know, after Barry got here, we were pretty damn salty until he left.

        • 47 Straight OU Know says:

I was pretty young, But I remember them giving Barry a hard time until he won in “85”

          • Brad Warren says:

Well, today is my 43rd bday, so I was young then as well. But, he won 2 titles in 74 and 75. We were right there to win several more but as I mentioned before, as many Orange Bowls as we have won, there were just as many that we didn’t, but should’ve. If that makes sense. The 31-6 debacle against Arkansas and the 84 meltdown against Wash come to mind. We were better than those teams. The losses to Miami of course hurt bad as well but they were a powerhouse, so nothing to hang head about there.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Yes the Canes were definitely a force, and losing all the orange bowls were why they were talking trash against the “KING”.

          • EasTex says:

            Happy Birthday!
Hope you have many more, they just keep getting better.

          • MoJoOkie says:

Happy Birthday! Hope you get something special.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Yes Happy Birthday may your day be filled with Denzell giving you a “BOOM”

          • BleedCrimson says:

            Happy Birthday Brad

          • jimintexas says:

            Happy Birthday!

    • j l says:

Hes a graduate transfer, they are immediately eligible.

  • CS says:

I have a good feeling about this year. Also, if we produce on field, the recruits will flock, not worried. BOOMSOON!!

    • EasTex says:

I agree. I think the ingredients are there for a great season. Team chemistry and leadership will be crucial, as well as some good fortune with the unpredictable prolate spheroid.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Just play better! Talent is there…though I always hate to hear the “just need to execute better” routine but it was true several times last year

      • Stephen Dale says:

very true…..at least 3 games lost to ‘boneheaded plays’ …..

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

KSU was lost by several boneheaded plays, pick 6, forgetting to block someone on a PAT, missed FGs, busted coverages.

Which is why I think a turnaround is possible if the team matures and the young OL plays well

      • CS says:

I know that leadership and execution, among players, is important. But, evidence suggests that when the right coaches are available, it helps in the above two. Though I was never one to criticize JH or JN, it was very apparent that they were reactive than proactive coaches. Also, we never developed the team, the drop off between 1st and 2nd was very very significant which affected our output (with multiple injuries).

My optimism this year stems from the fact of a new offensive system and watching Rileys system, how multiple the formations and personnel grouping runs. Even if we don’t win the Natty this year, it is going to one where we will put up gaudy numbers with a lot of kids getting playing time, that will help us in the long run.

My concern still is in the back end of our defense, I really hope Cooks is a difference maker, but in any case our offense should be able to keep us in the games.

        • Bob Edwards says:

I think Cooks will make a difference, though not sure how much. BJW was a good coach but he moved positions a lot so I am not sure he was an true DB coach. I think Mike was distracted with trying to figure out the whole scheme. If nothing else, having one voice teaching all of them should make them a better unit. Another year of experience for some of them won’t hurt either.

          • CS says:

Yes, totally. Also the new recruits at the back end are getting rave reviews, that gives me excitement. Can’t wait.

          • EasTex says:

I want to see what the DL alignment does for the pass rush. That could also help the secondary.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Im hoping Tap has a huge Sr year. 10+ sacks would go a long way to helping the secondary

          • EasTex says:

Yessir, along with Bond and Striker crashing in on the QB. Would also love to see more blitzes in the middle, much shorter distance than on the edges.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

I think adding Shannon to the mix will allow for more up the middle blitzing

          • EasTex says:

I’ve watched a number of videos from 2013, he was an excellent LB and that was his first year as a starter. I hope he plays like a demon this year.
            http://media2.giphy.com/media/8WrGnBOqUC0F2/200.gif

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah he might take a game or two to get back to full speed but he will take over for Dom Alexander…would also love to see Charles Walker, DJ Ward, and Matt Dimon begin to “show up” this year

          • EasTex says:

Those guys, along with Orso. Gallimore? I don’t think he red shirts and may be the surprise of this excellent recruiting class.

          • MoJoOkie says:

Won’t be a huge surprise to me. Gallimore has the look of a memorable player.

          • CS says:

The D line has huge upside. It will be worthwhile to let them lose.

          • Boom says:

Not sure on Gallimore for this reason. I watched a special on Gerald McCoy and he discussed his red shirt year. He said it was tough to go through but also said, when I got to OU, I had no idea of the different offensive line blocking and I would’ve gotten killed. McCoy said, we weren’t taught those fundamentals so that red shirt year really helped me.
Gallimore is a stud no doubt. However, I’m curious is he is in the same boat or he can overcome those blocking schemes. I don’t think he has had to face to many HS that had elaborate blocking schemes.

          • MoJoOkie says:

As I recall, playing in Canada isn’t the same; so you could be on to something. Might depend too if he is in the middle or on the end. On the end, the blocking isn’t all that sophisticated; just beat the tackle unless a back chips you a little.

          • EasTex says:

            I understand.
There is just something about the young man, I just think with his desire and extreme athleticism for a 300+ pound DE/DT he will be difficult to keep off the field. Yes, I think he is special.
If they use him in the “NASCAR” alignment on 3rd and longs as one of two DTs, I think he will have a big impact.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

I expect Gallimore to play if only for depth, his ability to play might mean he’s only around 3 years anyway so play him

          • Ed Cotter says:

Hopefully Jordan Wade can get back in the mix as well. He did great a few years ago subbing in for Phillips.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

agreed but I think Bob likes Matt Romar because he has the work ethic few others possess

          • EasTex says:

Monty loved Romar. Gallimore seems to have the same vibrating body movement as Romar, just bigger.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

            He will.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

            Unleash the beast!

          • Rick says:

ET, I’m sure you remember the DB’s from the Switzer era, sure different time, different emphasis, but he called them his “slobberknockers”. They were tough, they hit very hard and if they did have a receiver that caught a pass, he was going to pay dearly for the effort. That’s one thing I saw in the film of the young man that signed yesterday. If the receivers are looking to get popped on their routes, taking them out of step, if the opposing OL are trying to cheat outside to protect against the OLB rush opening the middle blitz, I can see the possibility of a very disruptive defense, maybe even start thinking dominant type defense again.

          • Cush Creekmont says:

But today, all of those good hits would be subject to that elusive “targeting” penalty; called as whimsically as minor crimes are inforced.

          • Rick says:

The targeting penalties applies loosly to non-SEC shools as directed by the governing body of the NCAA which is ESecPiN

          • EasTex says:

I remember and would dearly love to see a return to that type of defensive dominance. The 2003 defense was much like that.

          • Rick says:

Keeping the QB throwing from his heels, instead of his toes. Running backs falling away from the line of scrimmage instead of forward. Disruption, physicality and attitude. Would be good to have that “swagger” back.

          • Matt says:

Yeah one secondary coach isn’t necessarily the answer, they had one coach before Mike came back and things weren’t really that much better. I never really thought BJW was that good wither the secondary. I did think Martinez did a good job in ’10 before the wheels came off with new safeties in ’11. 2011 and 2014 make me think the key to good defense in the big 12 is good experienced safeties

          • rphokc says:

martinez is the current secondary coach at utenn……….wasn’t he encouraged to seek other opportunities when he was here, not sure

          • Matt says:

Yeah he was so Mike could come back…after the 2011 season which was pretty bad but not worse than last year IMO

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

BJW, Jack of all trades, master of none, except maybe recruiting at one time. Stoops said earlier this year when he hired him that he didn’t know if he would be on offense or defense, he just knew he wanted to hire him. I’m sure more than anything Stoops wanted him for Texas recruiting, but who knows.

One cool thing about BJW, he coached my all-time favorite NFL player, Darrel Green, at Texas A&I.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, that was my impression of BJW. He was a good coach, just not sure he was a great coach at any position. I do remember it being said that Stoops hired him because he had a great reputation amount Texas high school coaches. I think his age was starting to affect his recruiting ability. Not a lot of young guys relate to someone his age.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

I think Cooks will make a difference in the number of blown coverages and hopefully better tackling on the back end.

        • Cush Creekmont says:

All the DBs meeting together and answering to ONE DB coach should help. Now, if the corners are lined up closer than TEN yards, we might have something!

        • Matt says:

I’m hoping we see a consistent scheme from week to week. Rewatching the past few years under Heupel, It seemed like every week was a different scheme. I cringe the most watching the ’12 scheme. It was so finesse it was ridiculous, you can’t run the ball out of 4 wide with Jalen Saunders and Stills or a then-freshman Shepard in the slots. Drove me crazy! And the accuracy that scheme required was ridiculous. There were several games where it was basically a watered down air raid. Then others where he ran pro-personnel almost the whole game. Just seemed like the identity of that offense was that they had no identity. I miss the Kevin Wilson hey-day so much!!

          • Bob Edwards says:

This is why I think our QB’s may be better than a lot of people think. The ability to get more reps on fewer plays should help their execution. From what I’ve read, part of what makes Leach’s Air Raid work so well was that it is made up of very few techniques. But he could combine them in tons of different ways, sometimes even on make up plays on the fly. Lot’s of reps on fewer techniques means better execution. I assume Riley’s is similar.

          • Matt says:

Well from reading the Brainiacs dissection of Riley’s offense, it sounds more like the Baylor spread than Leach’s spread, doesn’t sound like a true air raid which I think is great. I think OU is the only true air raid team to win the ‘Ship but I could be wrong.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Same every year. Winning turns heads.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

As always, gotta see how the new guys perform in the trenches. Feel great about LBs and RBs, and am optimistic about improvement at WR, QB and secondary. Have no idea what to expect from the O and D lines.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

unnecessary censorship is hilarious, my favorite is when they use the sesame street characters

    • Stats says:

Always hilarious; my favorites this time were the “Bachelorette” since I watched it this time with my all-girl (except me) family.

  • SemperfiSooner says:

Something to remember for the season.

  • LLAdamJ7 says:

Haven’t heard anything about it in a while, but will there be a Brainiacs podcast this fall? I’m sure the loyal readers would be willing to fund this if necessary.

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

I’ve been asking that for a very long time, but I’ve always got the impression they had other things that were more pressing. I hope it happens at some point.

    • Drew says:

      And or an app . . .

  • Fear The Magic says:

Am I the only one checking every 15 minutes to see if there’s an open post?

  • Sooner Born N Bred says:

Has anyone heard anything about the D Line? Not a whole lot on that group this summer. Just wondering how Reynolds is doing, how some of the new guys are progressing this summer, and how the upper class guys are improving. I know its tough without full contact to gauge but anything would be awesome.

    • Bob Edwards says:

The skill players go against each other in 7 on 7’s. My understanding is that there is not really a similar thing for linemen. So about all you can here is how much time they are spending in the weight room.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Hopefully they’ve been busting their butts in the weight room

    • KJ1123 says:

Not a whole lot of information, I heard that Gallimore was looking pretty good early on in the freshman 1 on 1’s and Campbell looked good too.
