With the obvious and necessary caveat this could be absolutely nothing more than message board fodder, I did find this talk on OU’s desire to leave the Big 12 rather interesting. (OU Hoops)

I won’t be buying a hover board in case anyone was wondering. 🙂

    • Sooner_Ace says:

C’mon Ray….didn’t you watch Back to the Future 🙂

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

I’ll be the first to buy, but hell no I’m not going to stand on it. I’m kind of a big boy, I’ll sit.

    • paganpink says:

It requires a special strip of metal underneath the surface it’s riding over, so it’s not really what many people imagine it to be.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Thought I saw a video recently that AD had one.

  • MrBigsby says:

Not a fan of the “OU to B1G” talk at all. Just don’t see it as a good fit.

    • HoustonChiver says:

      It fits academically at least

      • MrBigsby says:

Not from the perspective of other B1G schools since OU isn’t an AAU member.

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

          Nebraska isn’t either.

          • MrBigsby says:

They were at the time of their move to the B1G.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

They were when they were accepted, but were not AAU when they officially joined (I think). Had they not been AAU when the BIG 10 voted, it is likely they would not have been accepted.

But FWIW, it wasn’t academic performance that excluded them so much as it was a shift in the way various academics were weighted. Basically, since so much of Nebraska’s research is AG related, they no longer qualified. They had some near misses on AAU membership in the past, but were able to get past it, just not this time.

    • Cam says:

I’d rather go to the B1G than the SEC, IMO. I like the academic and geographic fit better.

      • MrBigsby says:

From an academic standpoint, it’s a good move. But I’m afraid athletics would suffer, especially football. It would make it much harder to recruit the south and CA.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

I don’t want OU to jumo conferences. I

      • MrBigsby says:

I see your driving point, but if anyone is driving from Tulsa to Dallas in under 3 hours, they are hit 100mph for long stretches!! Problem is, there aren’t 2 teams to add that bring any value whatsoever.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

I think BYU adds great value right off the bat. There are several other programs that are on a solid foundation, and would instantly get a boost in recruiting and attendance with admittance to Big 12. Houston, Cincy, Memphis, for example, are in major population centers and have the ability to grow a program. Also, Notre Dame is facing increasing pressure to join a conference, and its not impossible to see them reevaluating a move to Big 12.

          • MrBigsby says:

BYU would be a bigger headache than Texas. First, due to their arrogance, second due to refusing to play on Sunday’s, making scheduling difficult, third due to travel. Those “city” schools do nothing for the Big 12, but only for themselves. Add them and we are turning into the MAC or WAC. And forget ND. They are contractually obligated to join the ACC thru 2027 if they join a conference.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

          And yes, my friends speed!

  • sracer says:

Sure hope the media keeps adding fuel to this dumpster fire.

  • Indy_sooner says:

If a move is inevitable, I would rather it was the SEC. From a geographical and recruiting standpoint, it makes the most sense, but that’s just me.

    • Sooner 4Ever says:

That’s not just you… there are plenty of us who agree with your thinking.

The SEC makes more sense geographically. It would help recruiting, whereas a move to B1G would hurt it (imo). And while I would love to have annual match-ups with Nebraska, again, and could get excited about tOSU and Michigan games… I’d love the annual games against Bama, LSU, Tenn, Florida, Georgia, etc. Those are marquee match-ups that test your team. If you get through a season filled with those types of tests and are in position to make the playoffs, you have to feel like your team is battle tested and ready to play for a title.

For those who argue “but it’ll be too hard to ever win consistently” I’d counter that just like everything else in life, you only grow as much as you challenge yourself. If you want to stay in the “easy to win” Big 12, then only expect to be good enough to win against what you admit is an easier schedule. Take on a tougher, more demanding slate of games, your team will either rise to the occasion or expose where it needs to improve.

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

Not trying to call you out or anything…but are you one who believes in the Malzahnian “Grind” theory?

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

I would believe in it, if I believed that the SEC is top-to-bottom better than any conference in the country, but their not. I’m not saying they haven’t been solid, but there’s so much more hype than substance. I think we’d be fine.

          • lefty67 says:

x 2 on this. Is the SEC one heck of a conference? Absolutely. Is every game you play equivalent to a date with the ’85 Bears? Only if you work for ESPN.

        • Sooner 4Ever says:

I don’t know that I’m familiar with Malzahnian Grind theory. I assume it is some how related to Gus Malzahn… which would make me less likely to be a subscriber to said theory since I’m not a big fan of Gus The Self-promotin’ Bus.

Edit** OTOH, anything theory, posit or system that incorporates “Grind” in it’s title… probably going to be okay with me.

      • lovethemsooners says:

Completely agree. Never understood the “big dog in a weak conference” mentality that many Sooner fans seem to have.

        • Stephen Dale says:

the OU administration may be unsure if /when OU might win a SEC title given the strength in that conference ; HOWEVER, Missouri has won the SEC East in consecutive years and OU could do the same….its possible even with this group of athletes and staff……..I think it boils down to the comfort level of the administration as where OU could flourish best……..

      • Indy_sooner says:

Well, I don’t know about “winning consistently” but we did beat, handily, the best the SEC had to offer.

      • Hollerback says:

What “annual games against Bama, LSU, Tenn, Florida, Georgia” ??? If OU joined the SEC, their would not be annual games with many of the teams, heck they would probably only play Florida every 4 years.

        • Sooner 4Ever says:

We wouldn’t have annual games with every one of those teams, but we would annually have games against some of those teams.

Hell, look at A&M’s conference schedule this year…

they play Arkansas, Miss. St., Alabama, @Ol’ Miss, South Carolina, Auburn, @Vanderbilt, @LSU.
I’ll take that conference slate any day. Look at the media hype and gameday atmosphere last year when Tenn. visited. And expect more of the same in Knoxville this year. Now imagine having that for home games with Ark., Bama, and Auburn. Same for a road game at LSU.

          Or, how about Missouri’s lineup…

          @Kentucky, S. Carolina, Florida, @Georgia, @Vandy, Miss St., @Tenn, Arkansas.

I would love to play Florida, S. Carolina, Miss. St. and Ark. at home this year in conference play and travel to Georgia and Tenn.

Add in Texas and OSU for non-conf. games and I don’t care who the other 2 OOC teams are, I’d take that schedule any day. The media hype and the excitement of those match-ups would be great.

Is it just me or does John

  • paganpink says:

Is it just me or does John Krasinski look exactly like Nick Collison of the Thunder when he grows a beard!?

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

I read the OU Hoops link and I believe it has some merit. I too am convinced DB is serious about a move out of the BIG XII. I know there are several here that have disagreed with me, but the Grant of Rights is worthless where OU & TX are concerned. If either team leaves the conference, the other will at least follow suit, if not follow, and the conference will cease to exist, and along with it the toothless GOR.

If for some counter-intuitive reason the networks decided to not let the BIG XII collapse and there were claims on the GOR, it would not be based on the exiting teams total revenue as a member of the BIG XII, but rather a much, much lower opportunity cost incurred by the remaining members as a result of said team taking their ball and leaving.

Just my two cents, but leaving the BIG XII is very doable and Boren of all people knows this.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Boren is just bluffing to get the conference to expand.

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

Why are you so confident he’s had a change of heart? Borden has already tried to get OU out of the BIG XII once that we know of.

  • SavageSoonerEsq says:

Tried watching The 33 official trailer. I couldn’t concentrate because every time Banderas talks I hear Puss N Boots.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Let’s stop the talk about realignment and get busy expanding the Big 12. I want OU to stay in a conference based in the Great Plains, not the Great White North (Big 10) or the Old Confederate South (SEC).
