FOOTBALL

Your favorite OU writer looks to be in midseason form already.

I’m trying really, really, really hard not to read too much into this.

    Goood Morning

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Outside of a couple of typical Hoover trollish lines, that article wasn’t bad.. He also has a good story on Dusty in regards to Mixon. Which makes me wonder why Joe hasn’t reached out at all to Dusty.. Maybe that’s something Bob or Cale should set up, but i think it’d be a positive step for Joe..

    • JD says:

Maybe Joe is fine…maybe some media members need to talk to Dusty about getting over something that happened a year ago…I haven’t heard any news that Joe is having trouble with the issue…is there anything concrete out there that he is

    • Drew says:

How do you know he hasn’t? (Not going to read the article, so sorry if it says so there).

      • EasTex says:

Me either, I don’t read Hoover.

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

It says so in the article. Quotes from Dusty & Bob regarding his situation 10 years ago & how Joe could benefit from Dusty’s experience.. Those are Bob & Dusty’s words.. It’s a separate story from the one Jordan has linked..

        • Drew says:

Fair enough then, my bad. I agree with you then, seems like it he’d be the guy to talk to, though I completely understand if Mixon just wants to move on.

    • SamSooner says:

Hoover, the Clown. This smells as if it’s agenda driven, say, more clicks.

  • Kelly Gurbcock says:

Hoover is an okie a&m aggie, can’t stand the dude. do I spit negativity at the current regime? yes. But I do not do it because I hate OU (ala Hoover) I do it because I love OU. I spit even worse hate to the aggies. Hoover=Troll with an agenda which is worse than being simply a troll.

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Let’s get this day started, Because today is a great day to be a SOONER!!!

  • SamSooner says:

Let’s allow Mixon and Shannon to put as much distance between themselves and their past actions. Let’s not remind them of their mistake so that they can shed the yoke and move on with their lives.

    • JD says:

Just thinking the same thing…Maybe they are over what happened a year ago and its the media that needs to talk with Dusty about how to get over something that happened a year ago

      • SamSooner says:

JD, I guess great minds think alike. I’m just tired of people reminding people they’ve made mistakes. How can someone move on if there’s always this audience reminding you how horrible you are.

I don’t agree with what they did. I hate it. Unless they repeat the mistake, I hope they can have productive lives, be good citizens.

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

It’s easy to see thru people that refuse to let others move past their own indiscretions. To step on people when they are at a low point in their life is the result of a sickened mind.

Hate the sin, not the sinner.

    • EasTex says:

I’m also a supporter of redemption.

      • SamSooner says:

Good morning, EasTex. How’s your daughter?

I’ve made mistakes and I thank God that I had supporters, forgivers.

        • EasTex says:

          Morning, bruh.
          Thanks for asking, she’s improving.

Everyone makes mistakes or faces adversity. It isn’t what happens that matters most, it is how they deal with it. These two young men screwed up publicly and they have been punished. No one will forget that, but they should be given the opportunity to move forward with out being reminded of it constantly.

          • SamSooner says:

Exactly. I guess those people doing the reminders can’t forgive them or don’t think they’ve been punished sufficiently.

We wouldn’t have Jackie Robinson’s marvelous story if Pee Wee Reese hadn’t given him support during a horrible time.

I certainly hope he gets cheers when he touches the ball, not boos.

          • EasTex says:

I would be very disappointed if Sooner fans didn’t cheer for either young man.
It would be interesting to know what type of indiscretions some of their detractors have been involved in.

          • SamSooner says:

“He who is without sin…,” right?

          • EasTex says:

Those words weren’t written with a poison pen.

          • Exiled In Ohio says:

TDs go a long way to helping fans forget! Joe’s gonna give fans lots of reasons to cheer.

          • Kelly Gurbcock says:

I think, if he’s as advertised, the ridicule for the poor kid will get worse. Just think about the kind of stuff he is going to hear in Stoolwater, Wacko etc… People need to remember we are dealing with 18/19 year old kids. I made all kinds of bad decisions when I was that age and I challenge anyone who says they didn’t!

          • EasTex says:

The fact that he stood up, took his punishment and remained at OU says he is on the right course.
It sure is easy to forget this was a 17 year old away from home for the first time celebrating his 18th birthday.
I wish him success as a Sooner and beyond, then one day many years from now he will shake his head at the memories of being a kid, like most of us do now.

          • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I would be disappointed too. However, I can’t remember any of the fans being anything but appreciative and happy when guys like Dvoracek got back onto the field.

          • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Come now. I’m all for allowing Mixon to redeem himself, but let’s not equate Robinson and Mixon.

          • SamSooner says:

Eric, the parallel is that Jackie Robinson got much needed support from Pee Wee Reese at a time when he was just about crushed. A public display of support from Reese showed Robinson that he was not alone. It gave him strength. That is the similarity I’m trying to illustrate between Mixon and Robinson.

          • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I get that. But Robinson had absolutely no part in why he was being crushed, other than the temerity to be born with a lot more melanin in his skin.

          • Eric Hoffpauir says:

There’s a couple of dynamics here. There’s the media frenzy of sportswriters needing something to write about in the absence of actual football. There are also plenty of people, with much justification, worried about a culture where athletes get a free pass for the worst sort of behavior.

        • MoJoOkie says:

My saving grace was not getting caught most of the times I crossed the line.

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Let’s remind Tulsa World of their mistake that was hiring Hoover. Then maybe they’ll distance themselves from their past actions.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

I couldn’t agree more. We could, and did, debate this endlessly last year. But these guys have served their punishment, and to me it is really low for the media to bring it up again.

I remember that most people said Joe was gonna run home. Didn’t happen. He manned up and did what needed to be done this year. No pity parties; he stayed in the gym and kept in shape. And now, by all accounts, he’s ready to shine. Can’t wait! I have a feeling Joe is going to give us some other great things to think about.

I’m struggling with some sinful thoughts of what I would like to do to the media guys who want to start up again.

      • SamSooner says:

I wish I could help him prepare for what’s to come. He will be fine, I believe.

        • Exiled In Ohio says:

Yeah, I guess if the media is rough that the fans on away games are going to be worse. He’ll silence them!

I love it when videos are available to celebrate these great Sooners.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

Sure would be great to see some Bone this year!

      • 47 Straight OU Know says:

I had a suggestion on that a few weeks back. I say put Mixon under center with Perine and Ross behind him and give Mixon the option to pass to the wide open tight end. It could work.

        • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I always wished we had put in a trick play where Lane Johnson got the ball and passed it downfield.

        • EasTex says:

I want to see Flowers at FB, Perine and Mixon at RB, then split one RB out and put the other RB in motion. The linebackers will be jumping from one foot to the other like Depriest was in the Sugar Bowl when Shepherd made his TD run.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Agree EasTex, The more movement bye the defense the more options it gives of making a play on offense. We need mass confusion on the opposing defense this year. Hope your daughter is better!!

          • EasTex says:

            Thanks, bud.
Looking forward to not having 9 in the box on defense like last year.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

With the air raid should open up some holes, but with the backs we have they will have to stay honest. Will be very interesting indeed. I posted this yesterday you might have missed it enjoy.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t think Bob would do it, but if Mayfield wins the QB job, I could see a package with TK at QB, Flowers at FB, and Mixon/Perine in the backfield. That would be fun.

  • John Garner says:

Thanx for the vid about the shelter dog. Brought a tear to my eye.

    • WilliamJack says:

They don’t call them man’s best friend for nothing! My wife is involved in animal rescue and sad stories are the rule rather than the exception. Glad at least they made it to a foster home.

  • John Garner says:

I think OU is down farther than at any other time during Bob’s tenure. So much was expected of us after the Sugar Bowl, and so little was achieved. But I have faith. The game with Tennessee will reveal if that faith is deserved, Win big or win ugly. I don’t care. Just win. That’s the game, I think, that will launch our season. Here’s hoping we kick the crap out of the Vols.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Just remember it is the so-called experts that are saying OU is down. 8-5 could have been 10-2 with a little better D and two less pick-sixes, and a missed chip-shot FG.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

TCU, KSU, OSU were all wins, if we had a QB that wasn’t TKPK6, a kicker that could make kicks that mattered, and if Boulware had done his job of wrestling BS to the ground before we re-kicked.

As you look back at it, we had to be really, really screwed up not to win 10 games…total self-destruction.

In a way, that gives us hope for this season (other than QB…maybe the new O can help cover those weaknesses).

    • WilliamJack says:

I’m hoping for an Oklahoma Roy D. Mercer ass whipping of Tennessee. Kicking ass and taking names, no prisoners type of a game for the Sooners! Triple BOOM!

  • EasTex says:

I see where the Big 12 coaches will be doing the espn “car wash” today.
The schedule shows Coach Stoops on at 12:20, don’t know if that is east or central time, though.

EDIT: it is central time and Coach will be on CFB Live at 12:45.

  • Bill Duncan says:

Just bought tickets to the Tennessee game and they’re outrageous. 165 a piece for upper end zone. If it wasn’t the only game that I could go to, I wouldn’t have paid that price.

    • MoJoOkie says:

I’ve been mulling it over. Word is if I go, my wife and I have to take our grandson. Money, money, money.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I have a buddy going. I wasn’t planning to go, but tried to request tickets to the game when I renewed my season tickets. If I get them, I might tag along. Would be a fun game to go to, and UT was a school I considered attending at one time.

      • Mike Reed says:

My parents put in a request when they renewed their season tickets. Hope they get them. If not…If you get those tickets and decide not to go let me know and i’ll buy the tickets from you.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

BREAKING: John Hoover brings to the fore important topics about OU or is he just a feckless, discordant, and trolling reporter?

    We’ll tell you at 5.

  • Jason Vos says:

Just have a feeling Lincoln Riley will tear Tennessee’s defense a new one.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I hope so. Just wish we had one more game to play before, to iron out the wrinkles.

      • Jason Vos says:

They have a new OC as well, they will not have the time to iron out their offense either

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

We’re talking about Lincoln Riley the OU coach, not Lincoln Riley the guy who owns the dry cleaners just down the street from me, right?

  • SoonerfanTU says:

UT charging $105 for Oklahoma game (most ever for UT home game, the same
price Oklahoma charged UT a year ago for game in Norman)

I don’t understand what that means. Is that basketball?

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Seen a bit of good news, Demetric Warren picked Youngquist to OU.

  • CKill1 says:

Interesting ranking thingy above. I have NO idea how you have a list of the top 25 teams ever and the 95 Huskers and 01 Canes aren’t on it, but whatever. It must really weight SOS heavily and it really, really loved 1973.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I think the 2008 Sooners should probably be on it as well, though I haven’t looked all that closely.

    • boomersooner says:

Wow. I didn’t read it but wow. I’m 38 and those were 2 of the best teams of my lifetime. Penn St 86. Us in 85 and 00 were real good

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

      Agreed times eleventy.

The 2001 Canes team was the most talented team I’ve ever seen. They WERE an NFL team.

The 1995 Nebraska team was probably the most dominant team I’ve ever seen. 2001 Miami is real close.

  • SavageSoonerEsq says:

The quote from Stoops about playing two quarterbacks is a little troubling, but could be seen as a positive as well. Hopefully all three are pushing each other for positive reasons, and not because they are all struggling with the new offense and/or “shoulder fatigue.” My guess is that Mayfield and Knight are going to look great in practice and scrimmages and Stoops will go ahead and name a starter, but will want to see how they perform to some degree in a real game in the new offense. BRING ON DA FOOZBALL ARGHHHHHH!!!!

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

If they play two QBs it won’t likely be Trevor and Cody. Both have a capacity to run. Baker might have a good capacity to run, I just haven’t seen him execute a run game like Trevor and Cody “could” execute.
