FOOTBALL

If things go as currently planned, we’re hoping to address this later today. I just didn’t want anyone to be under the impression we were trying to ignore it.

I’m not a fan of Clay Travis or pointless expansion/realignment speculation, but I can appreciate either of those feelings may not be shared by you. So if you care to click, that’s on you 🙂

    #1 BOOMER!!

  • Zack says:

Why not just take UCF and south Florida and move on. UCF was good enough to beat Baylor 2 years ago so I don’t see what the problem is. And south Florida had a nice run. Why not take cincy and Memphis too. Then you have the recruiting areas in Florida, Ohio and throughout the sec. Plus you go to 14 teams and add 2 solid basketball programs as well.

    • Boom says:

Why? Because it makes to much sense. To me, you just hit the nail on the head.

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

I actually like the idea of if you’re gonna expand.. Then really expand & go for 14.. Go east & give WVU travel partners… UCF, USF, Cincy & Memphis.. We already own the name Big14.. Might as well use it..

      • Zack says:

I think the big 12 missed out on a few years ago. There’s still quality programs out there. I think K likes Tulane a lot and I wonder how southern miss might do.

        • Jeremy Phillips says:

Problem with Tulane is that they’re another private school.. We’ve already got 2 of those.. Too many & your conference is doomed anyway..

        • cozyone says:

I would throw S.Miss a bone; its SEC territory and was good a few years ago under Jeff Bower. They would do wonders with B12 $$. My 4 would be: Memphis, S.Miss, UCF, and Northern Illinois (Chicago TV).

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Yep. Go East/West instead of North/South.

WVU, UCF, USF, Cincy, Memphis and you’d probably have to give KU and KSU the final two spots, to keep them together, although ISU is further east.

That leaves a ridiculously tough West of OU, osu, Baylor, ut, TT, ISU, and TCU.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

This makes me think the B12 has already seen the writing on the wall and the univ. Pres/ADs involved are just waiting out the leagues death sentence.

    • Stephen Dale says:

UCF /USF as a would open Florida recruiting grounds. ALso Tulane/Ga Southern would open Georgia, Louisiana / Mississippi , and San Diego / Fresno St would help with California recruiting…..

      • Finney56 says:

The problem with San Diego St / Fresno St is that the travel from Morgantown, WV to there would be astronomical and not in the best interest, especially playing on the west coast, where there’s a 2 hour time difference for Sooners, let alone what it would be for those weird Mountaineers up there

        • Oscar says:

I say merge with the PAC 12 and form a Super Conference with east and west divisions.

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

California and Florida are already open to OU. This would not be new.

    • John Garner says:

Memphis is definitely an option now that Sooner alum Justin Fuente has them playing solid football. The other three as well.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Can you fit the Big 12 Commish job into your schedule?

    • Jeff says:

Because the Big 12 sucks and the pukes better not bring OU down!

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I’d do that in a heartbeat.

    • MrBigsby says:

I’m just not a fan of adding “directional” and “city” schools.

      • rainydaze114 says:

They’re more than that really… those schools are actually really huge state schools with lots of alumni and lots of money.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

It always comes down the the money. And in TV that means number of viewers. So, any schools that are added will be new viewers to the pool. Pick from there.

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

I love the thought of having these two schools in conference. They are both large schools in a high population area (read: TV sets) with crazy recruiting potential that are only one good conference affiliation away from something special.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

UCF is only good if they have an NFL QB. Otherwise, they are kinda Iowa State. USF is kinda Kansas right now.

In Central Florida (i.e., Orlando/UCF), most people aren’t from the area. They are interested in other college teams. UCF “might” be the most popular team in the Orlando area.

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

I disagree here. They (UCF) have a more than respectable D most years. I would welcome them into the Big 12.

  • Big Tiddays says:

    Hello all,

OU is going undefeated this season. It will only be a surprise to the haters. I can’t wait to see Trevor Knight light up Baylor for 500 passing yards and 6 TDs.

    • Stephen Dale says:

with Mayfield on the pine with shoulder woes, Knight may get another chance……

      • John Garner says:

TK is an awesome athlete. Moreso maybe than BM so the problem is may be in his head in that he is unaccustomed to or can’t make the quick reads needed in the Air Raid. We may need him though. If BM is having “shoulder fatigue” doing 7-on-7 in the summer, what can we expect when the season arrives and his workload increases?

        • Daryl says:

I agree that TK is a freak athlete. I think if they let him play loose he can excel! If they try to make decision for him I think he will fold. If you think about it the reports we have been reading has said that the TK and BM have been fairly close in performance. I think that bids well for TK because he has never played in this system before and BM has. I think as time goes by you are going to see TK and CT close the gap on Mayfield. They may not beat him but I think it will be close.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t think this offense suits TK. The number one thing a QB in this offense has to do is make accurate throws. Can’t get YAC without the accuracy. And IMO, that is TK’s biggest downfall. He just doesn’t throw the ball accurately enough. And that appeared to be the case in the Spring Game too.

Hopefully Mayfield is alright. If he isn’t, and Thomas has shown he can throw the better ball, I’d prefer him to Knight.

          • rainydaze114 says:

It’s not like TK doesn’t have the potential to be an accurate passer. He can make the throws. We’ve seen it quite a bit actually, most notably in the Sugar Bowl when he absolutely destroyed a really good Alabama defense with perfect throws. He just needs to be coached up properly and he didn’t have that with Heup.

          • Drew says:

I disagree. The air raid creates a lot of space, and a mobile QB can be deadly in space. And we all know that, when allowed to, Knight is a very mobile QB.

          • John Garner says:

I like TK. I like his fire. And I think you’re right about BM having an advantage because of his experience with the system. I’m no OC but I don’t believe the problem is physical skills but IQ. Not that TK isn’t smart, just that he’s been inserted into a system with which he is totally unfamiliar. The quick read is critical to the Air Raid. BM can do that. TK, as yet, can’t.

          • Daryl says:

You may be right. BUT just to keep this convo rolling….I don’t think TK has ever been given the chance to make decisions with Heupul. Other than the Alabama game. Even the TFB showed I. Their breakdown they do that zone reads were decided before the snap. I think his decision making hasn’t been used in quite a while and now it will be. The question can he get back to it like he did in HS. JMO

          • John Garner says:

Agree. The zone read wasn’t a read at all when you take away the QB option which Heupel did. I wonder how much being constrained effected TK’s confidence, especially after throwing some critical pick 6’s. Too, I have to believe the coaches were afraid of TK getting hurt. It was like a Catch-22: damned if you do let him run and damned if you don’t.

        • ND52 says:

Knight has above-average athleticism for the position. But in no way, shape or form does he bring to the table what a Johnny Manziel or Marcos Mariotta does.

          • Indy_sooner says:

I get Mariotta, ok, but good god with the Manziel comparison. No one in the CFL scuttles around as much as Manziel today but I would rather have TK that that nutcase.

          • ND52 says:

Let’s stay on topic @Indy_sooner:disqus. The post I responded to was solely about athleticism—-not mental make-up or professional football.

          • Indy_sooner says:

Fair enough. Hard to keep from jumping conclusions when that name gets dropped.

          • John Garner says:

Didn’t say he did. Just pointing out that his difficulty with the Air Raid has more to do with his inexperience with it, than his physical skills.

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_7bA4sqebtR:disqus

I would say most of his problems last year stemmed from poor coaching more than anything. That was his second year as a starter and he looked completely lost at times—–I blame all of that on Heupel.

          • John Garner says:

Agree. Heupel — except for the Sugar Bowl — didn’t gameplan to TK’s skills. We were also hurting at WR last year except for Shep. As for hamstringing TK, I wonder if Heup was instructed to do so because of our inexperience behind him and his proclivity to get hurt. The thing is, though, TK made some awful reads. Can’t blame that on Heupel.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

To clarify, you are saying that Knight will throw for 500 yards and 6 TDs against Baylor in ONE game, not three, correct?

Just want to make sure you weren’t referring to cumulative career stats against Baylor.

    • blaster1371 says:

kinda early to be hitting the bottle

    • ND52 says:

You mean TDs that actually count for OU—–and not Baylor?

  • Sooner 4Ever says:

I hope Rowdy succeeds in finally ripping an opponent’s arm right off when she locks up with Correia next month.

    • rainydaze114 says:

I kinda want to see her get beat. Just me though…

      • Drew says:

Personally, I enjoy having someone who can walk their talk. It’s fun, and her competitive streak is infectious. That being said, I’m never root for the underdog. Now, I might root against the favorite, but I personally enjoy the big boys rolling in town and doing what they want .Could just be me though.

  • Mike Reed says:

“The Longhorn Network is a disaster, why not turn it into the Big 12 Network and make much more money?”

The Longhorn Network is a disaster because it’s Texass. When you’re pompous, arrogant, think your sh*t doesn’t stink and you’re willing to step on whomever you can (other BigXII teams) to make a dollar , karma will always pay you a visit. Texass sucks and so does their loser of a network. I wouldn’t agree to anything in the future that gives the whorns more money than the other teams in the league. Everyone starts out on equal footing in a newly expanded league. If Texass doesn’t like it then they can pick up their toys and go play somewhere else.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

I’m guessing there hasn’t been any confirmation on whether Viney is staying on staff.. But sure seems like a guy that’s not going anywhere…

    https://twitter.com/OU_CoachViney/status/616599883034693632

    • Stephen Dale says:

Jeremy: this name came up on another board yesterday. Consensus is he’s gone….

    • Daryl says:

Why in the world would you make Ahmad Thomas the center piece of that pic. Is the point to make WRs get excited about the safety that will probably start that can get burned like no other?

      Sorry bad morning.

  • Matt says:

can someone explain the scheme last year to me and why D. Neal struggled so much with it? Required too precise of routes? Too much thinking? Hes more of a vertical threat and he was used underneath too much?

  • John Garner says:

The Jobs movie looks kick ass.

  • Zack says:

Boudreaux is announcing today right? What time

  • ellisbr says:

what’s the read on Boudreaux? is he OU bound or will he go elsewhere?

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

Most everyone thinks Notre Dame.. We’ll see..

    • SamSooner says:

The young man has to make a choice he believes is best for him. I wish him the best. It’s where he will spend four years of his life. He has to live with that, not us.

So, for purely selfish reasons, I hope he chooses OU. On the other hand, If he doesn’t, the best of luck to him.

  • rainydaze114 says:

All I’m saying is, we should have grabbed Clemson and FSU (and probably Louisville as well) while they were available. Pretty sure those schools would have joined if asked, too.

  • Jason Vos says:

If Boudreaux commits to Notre Dame can we please keep the crying to a minimum?

I already envision the amount of crybabies going to over saturate the thread with complaints

If he goes elsewhere then it’s next man on the list. If he comes here that would be tremendous

    • Clint Lenard says:

      There’s always next year.

      • KJ1123 says:

Hes not committing to OU imo. And from what I hear, that’s not a bad thing.

        • cpearc00 says:

Oh yeah? What did you hear?

          • KJ1123 says:

Just that players were not thrilled with him possibly coming to OU. Attitude and how he would of fit in with the OL was a concern. Im putting it mildly but you get the jist.

          • Stephen Dale says:

Really ?? I’ve read nothing on any other website indicating this guy had anything less than a stellar attitude to accompany his physical skill set….I;ve read nothing to indicate he would trouble ‘fitting in’ in Norman….have you observed this personally or is it sour grapes to cover the pain of him going to ND ???

          • KJ1123 says:

No sour grapes at all…I didn’t want to respond until he made his commitment, for obvious reasons. I think Parker is good, but I also think a couple of the OLs that have been highlighted here and that B is going after are better. JMO.

          • Stephen Dale says:

            Who might they be ????

          • j l says:

Parker has a ton of offers, but hes only ranked the #25 OT by rivals. Its not like he was an unreplaceable prospect.

Sucks to miss out on him, but its not the end of the world

          • KJ1123 says:

Cant remember the names, but Ive seen the HUDL tapes on here.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

My expectations on the level of crying when Parker goes elsewhere…

  • albsooner says:

For all of you who claim that if we pull in certain schools from certain regions, it will open up recruiting in that region, please provide some examples of this happening. I do not agree with the premise, but would love to see some data to support your claim.

I have done some cursory research and it appears there is not a strong correlation with playing a school in an area where you don’t have a recruiting stronghold and being able to recruit that area just because you play a team in that area.

I looked at Nebraska, They don’t have any players from talent rich Ohio or Michigan.

I looked at Texas A & M. They don’t have any players from Florida or the Carolinas. While they have players from LA, that was always a hotbed for them.

I would love to be proven wrong, but I think many are taking a leap that is unfounded.

    • Josh Weaver says:

Looking at it the opposite way. When A&M joined the SEC there was an increased amount of SEC presence in recruiting Texas than before.

    • RocketCitySooner says:

It would be a ‘two-way street’. It would help if you’re playing in an area with more and better quality players than you have in your area. It would hurt if you’re playing in an area with fewer and lesser quality players. Also would depend upon the number of quality teams recruiting in these areas. OTOH, in the SEC, there are probably more quality recruits than in Oklahoma due only to population density. OTOH, in the SEC, there are more competition (more quality teams recruiting) for those recruits.

The big impetus for joining the SEC is the perception that the SEC is the best and we want to be a part of the best. That really doesn’t impress me all that much. After all, get in the championships and we get a chance to prove who is best and compete for the quality recruits.

We need to leave the XII. There is, long term, only room for four power conferences and XII will not be one of them. Personally, my choices, in this order are: B1G, ACC, PAC, SEC.

People think Boren was laying the ground work for leaving the XII. He was, but he was also laying the ground work for leaving OSU. Not leaving UT, but leaving OSU.

play the SEC champion in the playoffs and a chance to prove to the recruits that they want to play for us.

    • JB says:

Agreed. Some players will go across the country, but history shows the majority want to stay close to home near family.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Apparently, there are many schools that are in direct violation of the Fire Marshall’s maximum occupancy rules.

  • Jeff says:

$ec or bust! Just sucks OU wouldn’t play the pukes every year.

  • Fear The Magic says:

I know Im in the minority but Id still like to see OU leave and join the Big 10. Rileys fast pace air attack would befuddle that whole conference.

    • RocketCitySooner says:

I agree. B1G is a better fit. Also good chance we can ditch UT which, with their LHN, has only been an irritation.

    • leatherneck1061 says:

Could be an interesting scenario. But since OU is unlikely to be able to go anywhere without our orange-headed little brother, the chances of the B1G agreeing to take the pukes too are probably nil.

    • Mr. Jones says:

I wouldn’t mind a move to the Big 10. It would improve the perception of the conference, we could reunite the Nebraska rivalry and I think it would be a much easier road to the playoff than the SEC.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

How would our style of play be in the colder winter months of Nov & early Dec? Would our passing game suffer? Things to think about.

        • Fear The Magic says:

Did Bret Favres passing game suffer playing for Green Bay?

        • Mr. Jones says:

I get your point; but do you think playing 2 or 3 games in harsher conditions than we’re used to is that much worse than ending the season vs UGA, Bama, Auburn, FL (assuming they’re good again) and LSU? I don’t know that I would.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Mizzou has managed to get to Championship game, so I think we could too. But I agree it would most likely be easier path in Big10. Another thing to consider is that travelling on road games in colder weather – would that be something to consider too? There are more appealing destinations in SEC than Big10 IMHO.

          • Mr. Jones says:

I would definitely agree the SEC would be better from a fan experience aspect. And anything Mizzou accomplishes only solidifies my belief OU could do so as well, especially if OU was in the SEC East which I would assume they would be. But an easier playoff path and re-connection with Nebraska are the main things that really appeal to me.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I have great memories of the NU/OU rivalry games. I guess on the flip-side we would have an advantage over cold climate teams when they would come down to Norman in September when it is 104F. The 4th QTR would be brutal on them. Heh.

      • JB says:

The Big 10 has never appealed to me. I could live with the SEC, but I wished Texas’ network and OU’s insistence on taking oSu with us didn’t implode the Pac12 deal.

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Very happy with President Boren for stepping out and reviving the expansion talk regardless of what the commish or others think. There is obviously a huge population of people who would like to see something done. Good work Boren. Boomer Sooner!!!

  • Jordan Esco says:

    Parker Boudreaux to Notre Dame

    • Fear The Magic says:

As expected. Thats one big leprechaun!

    • Sooner Ray says:

      EasTex does not approve.

    • Carl Carter says:

Definitely salty.. But I’m way more focused on getting Caleb Kelly

      • kokevo says:

They need to pull out all the stops for him. I listened to a scout for rivals say on the radio that Michigan was leading with Kelly and the next day warren said the same thing so I think we are behind on him also.

    • kokevo says:

There goes another top choice. Now let’s go find a 2star that has a offer from Arkansas st and get a commitment and call him a hidden gem that can be coached up.

      • boomersooner says:

Some of you people amaze me with how bad you get your wittle feewings hurt with stuff

        • kokevo says:

I just don’t get how we haven’t been able to land any commitments.

          • boomersooner says:

            It just turned July

          • kokevo says:

I know that but our top choices are committing elsewhere and we are getting second or third choice guys Baylor or tcu could lose half there classes right now and still put ou to shame.

        • ND52 says:

Not everybody can be an endless fountain of sunshine and rainbows @disqus_BeW3hegp9d:disqus—–you set a standard that no one can match 😀

          • boomersooner says:

Yep. You “realists” go to each site with your never-ending eeyoreness and bring everybody down. We get it. Free country. You do whatever you want. Your “opinion” should be expressed just like everybody else. But seriously, when it’s every single subject on every single day, no one wants to read it. You of all people should know there are more important things to worry about than losing out on recruits

          • boomersooner says:

Haha. Speaking of not meeting standards. You guys whine about every single thing under the sun. And want blood when you don’t get you wittle way

          • ND52 says:

@disqus_BeW3hegp9d:disqus Lol! Yeaaaaah, um no. Sorry, but no one died and made you captain of the fan police

          • boomersooner says:

Good one. Are you rphokc? You guys seem to share the douche gene. I know. Maybe these guys can sell “boom” muzzles for you guys that wanna bitch about everything

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_BeW3hegp9d:disqus

            “Douche”? Wow, okay…………….

          • boomersooner says:

Exactly. When people like y’all always, and I do mean always, bring a place down or in other words, if the shoe fits

          • Malicong says:

I take offense to that comment. My sunshine pumping is second to none!

          • ND52 says:

@disqus_UgO7DH4SYL:disqus Don’t get me wrong now—-sunshine pumpers definitely have a place in our modern society!

          • Malicong says:

I remain optimistic that we will be fully appreciated one day.

    • Stephen says:

Rowdy Frederick get that offer yet?

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

      Who?

  • Sooner Ray says:

Heard this kicked around on the radio, pick up the three service academy teams plus one more getting to 14. The academy stadiums are small but they are considered a national brand. Good or bad?

    • Cam says:

No bueno if you ask me. What do service academies bring to a conference?

      • Sooner Ray says:

Not sure what they could bring…it’s why I asked.

        • Cam says:

That’s what i’m saying. To me they don’t have a brand or geographic location. People generally go to the service adaemies for specific reasons, and football is not the top of that list.

    • KJ1123 says:

Not that it’s a deciding factor for anything or a reason to include them……. but I hear the Army home games are pretty impressive.

      • Sooner Ray says:

If a lot of eyeballs watch them play when they are on TV, the television contract money might be good. If that isn’t the case there may be no benefit.

  • KJ1123 says:

Ronda is gonna smash that girl.

  • JB says:

Expansion sounds great, but after Boren started the trend of having Big 12 members sign on to a grant of (TV) rights contract (yes, that was his idea), the other Power 5 conferences followed suit. We can’t poach any other P5 conference so there’s no one left to get with the possible exception of BYU that would be a quality football addition (other than OU, TCU and Texas they are the only other team who would have a football national championship and would have a better all-time record than most Big 12 schools). Any other member would weaken the Big 12.

There’s a simple solution to the problem of not having a 13th game like P5 conference champions. With the new autonomy rules, every member of the Big 12 should add an extra non conference game. EVERY Big 12 member could boast about playing 13 games, not just the conference champions & runner up.

    • Cam says:

Teams would be too scared to add another OOC game because it means another potential loss to someone decent or just another cupcake on the schedule.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

    We’re all doomed
