2017 RB Marcelias Sutton Commits To Oklahoma

At what point does Oklahoma become the Midwest satellite campus for Lackawanna CC football prospects? The Sooners added another — after signing three players from Lackawanna (Ashton Julious, Emmanuel Beal & Kapri Doucet) in their 2016 class — from the Scranton (PA) JUCO program Friday afternoon in the form of 2017 all-purpose running back, Marcelias Sutton.

While most were expecting the commitment of 2017 CB Tre Brown, Oklahoma picked up a second commitment, from Sutton, virtually just minutes apart from one another. Sutton had previously been committed to North Carolina State, but clearly had a change of heart and flipped to the Sooners.

To be perfectly honest, the Sutton news came a bit out of nowhere so we’re still working to both speak with and learn more about him. For now, however, Oklahoma has added their first of what is expected to be at least two RBs in this 2017 class.

OH MY GOSH, THIS MAN CAN RETURN PUNTS AND KICKS. PINCH ME

    • Kevin Moore says:

What words are these that you type with such excitement? Are you sure the Coaches know of them? ; )~

    • Roger Nixon says:

      Is that legal?

      • Walter Sobcek says:

apparently (and don’t quote me) it’s not only legal, but advisable as a method of advancing the ball after fielding a punt. i’m excited to see this new trick play installed in the offense.

        • The OL' Ball Coach says:

Look man no offense but other then Bama who led the nation in Punt return yardage per avg, who had the most attempts by the way because they play Defense like no other and had a whopping 47 punt return attempts to OU’s 22. The next top 20 teams that played D 1 ball in 2015 per punt return average couldn’t beat Lomega OK High School in football.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I hope he tells coach that he can lower his shoulder, but cannot raise his arm.

      • The OL' Ball Coach says:

Why? Every NFL team’s Special Teams coach tells their Punt Returners on the first day of OTA’s is Rule Number one: Always, always field the punt, unless one it’s a peter punt, #2 the Punt Returner thinks it’s going to drop inside the 10 yard line and then it’s: fake the fair catch, sprint forward (acting job) let it drop and pray it finds the zone. Rule Number two: You are never wrong fair catching a punt as long as you secure the football. Never! Read coach Belichik second to his last sentence here.

Another note from Bill Belichik during the same lecture in 79 at the San Angelo clinic on punt returns: Yeah, sure. I think that absolutely really comes under the whole category of hidden yardage, if you will. For example, fielding a punt and fair catching a punt that’s say 37 yards versus not catching it and it rolls another 13 yards and now it’s a 50-yard net or a 13-yard change of field position. So those 13 yards don’t show up in the stats. It’s not a sack, it’s just if you had handled the ball, you would have had it at midfield, but you didn’t handle it so you have it at your 37. Those plays are definitely hidden yardage in the kicking game. Things like penalties, they’re generally at the spot of where the ball was caught most of the time, in the punting game. So if you return a punt for 10 yards and get a penalty, it’s really a 20-yard loss of field position as opposed to a 10-yard penalty. So the penalties in the kicking game, generally speaking, result in more yardage than they do on normal scrimmage plays.

I think it’s safe to say Belechik is a hell of a Ball coach.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Lackawana has him listed as a FR so he should be a 3 for 3.

Edit; Sorry a FR in 2015 so he would be 2 for 2. He was a 2014 recruit.

  • John Doe says:

losing Dobbins to Ohio State left OU with few HS options….

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Really? With 11 months until signing day?

I suspect the coaches are not desperate quite yet.

      • Jpsooner23 says:

That’s all he has bro. We have 8 guys in the top 300 on 247 and one that’s not. All he can talk about is the one that’s not. He is miserable.

    • ccmosaic says:

A couple pay sites are saying he is 1/3 of the backs OU will bring in this year. They wanted an all purpose back that was an upperclassman. They got him. Now we need and will get 2 more good HS running backs.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

they’re not done, nor out of it, w/ Dobbins

Are we still going after that Canadian kid as well? Would we make room for both?

    • ColoradoSooner says:

    • Stephen says:

FWIW, there are plenty of HS targets available, including Dobbins. I’ve spoken with a couple educated OSU fans and from what I could gather, the Dobbins commitment was somewhat out of pressure to reserve a spot in their class since they can’t take more than about 17 recruits. That commitment is soft and they are the first to admit it.

    • AltoidSooner says:

Never change SD, the reactions make me LOL

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

So, there are only what 11 good backs in HS? OU is a top 12-15 recruiter recently, better before, I think OU knows what it is doing when it comes to running backs. More so than Bama or Ohio st…

    • Framoka says:

Bull Hockey on that comment. There’s one position I’ve NEVER seen OU struggle to recruit and that’s RB. LR must love this kid, stars be damned.

    • Jake says:

Stephen, so glad you have the inside scoop with OU’s recruiting.

I know you’re really, really busy… But, when you get a minute, please send me a copy of OU’s Recruiting Board for 2017. Just for verification purposes, of course.

      Don’t worry, I’ll wait.

A little bit of Q mixed with Roy Finch.

Interestingly, Lackawana has his name as Marclias Sutton. http://lackawannafalcons.com/sports/fball/2015-16/bios/sutton_marclias_l4h3

Pretty scrappy run when going for 3rd base at 1:10 of the video.

  • OceanDescender says:

Dang Lackawanna must be destroying the other JUCOs on the field. And after seeing the film, I know OU isn’t settling here either; great surprise pick up!

  • Jpsooner23 says:

He was indeed offered by ECU when Riley was there.

  • Boom says:

Based on his inside running, he reminds me more of Q than Finch. Either way, I like this type of back as a change up if we have some 230lbs hitting them for most of the game.

    • CcrBoomer says:

Reminds me of that Rodgers kid from texas that him and his brother played for Oregon St.. Small shifty guy that ran all over USC’s DL a couple yrs ago

  • cush creekmont says:

Welcome aboard the Sooner express Mr. Sutton. We look forward to seeing you in action. Being part of the Sooner, Super Seventeen class might be as auspicious as any beginning for a player.

  • Jerry Reid says:

Sooners illustrated has Sutton as a 2016 recruit and has 2 stars

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

2 stars lowers OUr star rating and provides negative founder for ESPN.

    • Zack says:

Hopefully he counts for 2016 although his rating won’t matter if he is a 2017 recruit. Rivals ranks based on your top 20 commits and we should have 24+ this year.

  • Big Higg says:

Is this guy any kin to Q?

  • Stephen says:

Reminds a bit of Keith Ford.

  • KatyOUdad says:

Welcome to the Sooner family. By the way where is EasTex?

    Darren Sproles?

  • Dave Wilkins says:

    Reminds me of Eric Metcalf.

  • ALar03 says:

    What number is julius?

  • OUBmrSnr72 says:

Am I reading the Lackawanna JC stats wrong or was Sutton not even the best RB on his own team? Didn’t lead in attempts, yards, YPC, catches, or receiving yards? Is Lackawanna the Bama of JUCO’S or does one of their coaches have naked pics of Bob? They must be deep at RB for OU to take their backup RB in early March?

    • Zack says:

      You’re reading it wrong.

      • The OL' Ball Coach says:

Hmm, might be getting that time my friend. It hit me when I turned 45. Can’t make without my readers.

      • OUBmrSnr72 says:

        Uhhhhh……no. I’m not.

He actually had 5 more receiving yards than the starter….but is 2nd on the team in carries, rushing yards, YPC, TDs (8 to 3), and catches.

        • Zack says:

I read it that the coaches offered sutton and not the other guy.

          • OUBmrSnr72 says:

Yeah, Sutton committed but Terry Norris had 450+ more rushing yards, a better yard per carry average, 5 more TDs, more catches and more more receiving TDs.

    • The OL' Ball Coach says:

You are correct sir. The Norris kid had more carries and yards rushing then Sutton. Sutton played specials and was a 3rd down back guy. Sutton has greater upside as a pure athlete according to Lackawanna JC coaches. That staff are regulars on the clinic circuit as you can imagine.

  • Sutton/Hobbs says:

Congratulations Marcelias Sutton on becoming a sooner. His name is wrong on the Lackawanna site. He does have a God given talent for football. He’s very humble He can (and we, North Carolinians, have seen him) play every position on the field every game throughout the entire game his entire high school career. However, RB is his thing! When there is a first down needed, he’s your guy to put in. He can beat you with all extremities. Maintains his weight on his own. Has known Riley, who has always followed & kept up with him, for a very long time. Marcelias’ Sophomore year. I promise, you all will love to see him play just as we do. He is very dedicated to his studies because of his dedication to football. He will do all in his power to continue being a great asset to his team. Work hard in silence and let the success make the noise!
