As a CT resident, that had to be the worst game to watch. I wanted OU to crush them badly since UConn should NEVER be on the same football field with the Sooners. Even though the game was never in doubt, my wife was pissed at me because I wanted nothing less complete destruction. Since the flight back to CT had many UConn fans on it, you can be sure I wore my OU gear proudly. BOOMER!

      • ouwooferman says:

        SOONER! Good for you.

      • SamSooner says:

That was a lose/lose situation for OU. Lose the game and you suck. UConn plays close and you suck. Blow out UConn, as you should, you suck.

        • cush creekmont says:

Hey Sam! OU has played in a LOT of those L/L games. I guess it comes with the territory. Alabama losing to Utah a few years back and FSU recently – bad bowl matches truly are trap games.

          • SamSooner says:

Good morning, Cush. You’re right. It does appear that there is disparity in the narrative between OU and Bama (see Bama’s blowout against Ga. Southern) as OU would be asked to stiffen your schedule and Bama gets a free pass because they play in an overrated conference.

I guess they (the pundits) could argue the number of championships won by the $EC and I would counter that with they (the pundits) made sure an $EC team was invited to the dance.

But you’re right about the bowl matchup, nothing you can do there.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

That game was to break the major bowl losing streak.

We got a superstar QB & RB. All we need is for one WR to step the f*** up. I still think Jeff Mead will be the guy though to surprise and become the go to guy

    • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Jason, FOOTBALL!! I believe it will be Geno Lewis. I think he may have something to prove. But hell they may all surprise us, and all of them step up. You never know!!!

      • SoonerinLondon says:

If Geno could contribute just have what Justin Brown did, he would make a big difference for this team.

        • 47 Straight OU Know says:

I was trying to think of his name, he is the other one that transferred from Penn St. a few years back correct? I really look for Lewis to make an impact.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Correct. I expect Geno to step in and do well once he’s more comfortable. Hopefully his transition will be smooth since he’s a little older.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Also he does have Game Day experience, granted it was at PSU but you have to start somewhere. And I believe the contagiousness of Baker will definitely rub off on him. And I think he probably passes a little better than the PSU QB.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      I hope you’re wrong but that means…Dede, Andrews, Baxter…didn’t!

      • ouwooferman says:

These guys PLUS both Perine and Mixon are great, out of the BF, catching as well. We will be fine.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yep and Mixon goes into the slot at times. I want him to get the ball more on swing passes or wheel routes. Pull people up and then we can hit some deep balls.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Mixon needs the ball in his hands more. The dude is 6’1 225 and runs like a mad man. We need more RB passes regardless of who’s on the receiving end. Steelers and patriots do an excellent job of that and I want LR to watch some of their film.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I’m witch you on that Vegas. Get the ball into your best players hands – period.

          • Drew says:

Well, if Mayfield will actually follow through to his last read this year, I’m sure he’ll catch plenty of passes ;). Seriously, I loved Bake’s heroics last year, but just pass the RB the ball.

    • LottsSocks says:

Not a hater but you mean this guy?

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Who? The guy who is 6’4 and drops passes?

      • soonerthunder says:

means little. want me to do what everyone was doing before last year and criticizing me for saying that the qb would be mayfield, very accurate, and had the “it” factor? want to see what they posted on mayfield to “prove” me wrong? the test of the puddin’ is in the eatin’, and this season hasn’t be “eatin'” yet. fans have a tendency to write someone off if they haven’t done it by their first year.

    • Brent says:

well somebody needs to replace durron neal on the “this will be his breakout year” list.

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

        That’s freakin good dude. Lol

      • Krys Allen says:

I have been rewatching 2015 games and Neal dropped so many passes that Shep would have caught. Passes that definitely weren’t perfect, but should have been caught. There has to be someone besides Westbrook that we can rely on this year to just catch anything that gets close.

    • Dick Bump says:

Maybe Smallwood. He looks the part.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I always forget about Jordan. I really wish he didn’t suffer that injury last season. The dude has the physical tools, maybe it’s lack of reps? I’m not sure. Hope we can get a big 6’2-6’5 guy step up.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I’m not even worried about WR. I really hope Dahu or AD can step up. We’ve got plenty of smaller shiftier guys, now we need that possession WR.

    • soonerthunder says:

westbrooke will be the top wr this year imo, but overall, we should be much improved at the wr position as a committee. should be a strong point.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

As much as SI thinks they are being cute with the “Cheating for Dummies,” they aren’t. They’re being stupid by printing this article because, to me, it makes light of cheating. This is not what we need or want our youth to be reading: “it’s not cheating if you don’t get caught.”

After all, Rule #8 could have been “Don’t Cheat.”

    • Bob Edwards says:

      Shouldn’t that be Rule #1?

  • CS says:

That “Best Dline list” has me wondering about our defense. We have three great players in their respective positions (Walker, Evans and Parker), if JT gets his act together 4. But is that good enough to compete with Bama or Mich in the playoffs, I am not so sure.

    • ouwooferman says:

Pre season watch lists, rankings, etc dont float my boat. rarely are these close. I swear they post this crap to create hits/reads etc.

      • CS says:

Look, you can doubt it all you want, especially if the so called “analysts” start predicting outcomes of games this early etc. But, the majority of that particular article is about what they saw last year and which guys that stood out are coming back. It is not completely theory weaving, there is a logic to it. If you trace the same logic to our team last year, we knew we were going to be good on the D bringing back Strike, Tap, Bond et al.

My point is, if I apply the same logic to our team, most of our best players last year on the Dline (Tapper, Striker, Bond), are gone. Walker is our only hope, compared to Mich Bama that bring back 3-4 players who had great years.

But, in all this I am secretly hoping we have a weapon or two in the under-class men that will shine, here is to hoping that that is the case, cause we really need that, especially on the DLine.

        • Randy says:

The gap is real unfortunately.. Doesn’t mean we can’t play great and Baker be special but yeah I feel ya on the OL and especially the DL.

        • ouwooferman says:

We will firmly disagree on this. Thats life and makes for an interesting world. I suppose we should not have played in 2000, since we only put two players in the NFL following the NC> Teams win, individuals get awards. Focus on the bad all you want (not heaving players on “watch lists” created by pundits and networks pumping their own sunshine) if needed.

    • ouwooferman says:

Pre season watch lists, rankings, etc dont float my boat. rarely are these close. I swear they post this crap to create hits/reads etc.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Why do you believe Michigan is so good? They got shredded by any team that had somewhat of an offense and they have an extremely predictable offense to defend. I think they are beyond overrated and they’ll benefit from a weak conference and schedule, much like Iowa last year. I would LOVE to play Michigan in the playoffs lol.

      • CS says:

The reason I put Mich in the same line as Bama is because of their OLine and Dline play. At the end of the day, that’s what wins championships. Why did MSU and OU get whipped last year in the playoff? I will argue, we had the best QB/RB/WR combo, combined with great DB/LB play of all teams in the playoff. Cause Bama and Clemson had better OLine and Dline play.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

So you don’t think their Dline was inflated at all? Like I stated, any team with a pulse on offense was able to move up and down them. When they faced pro set offenses they did well, but the spread systems wrecked havoc on them. Our offensive line was too young to handle those boys from Clemson, it’s that simple. Our defense was also gassed the second half due to injuries. Had a few plays gone the other way, I think we would have beat Clemson. That third drive when we called a RPO, ball got tipped at the line, had it not been tipped we would have been up 14-0 and really looking nice. Special teams play killed us and that long run my Watson killed us as well. I don’t think it was solely defensive and offensive line. Just a few plays didn’t go our way and that was the difference. Just my opinion, but yeah.

          • CS says:

I think you first answer kinda proves a little bit of my point. If Okla faces those team, they will be able to score (thanks to the scheme we run), no doubt. But, at the end of the day, you need to have those 2-3 special players, who will win their one-on-one match-up on the Lines to get us into the endzone or stop them from scoring. I don’t think I know any other than Walker in our Dline that can do that, YET (Lampkin and Gallimore, pls prove me wrong).

To your second point, our OLine really did play well that game, since they were young but we didn’t have difference makers in our DLine, so we never were able to stop them from running, which is my fear again this year.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I guess I just have a little more faith in the younger ( bigger guys ) than most. Matt Dimon is a perfect example of someone who plays hard, he’s smart, very active, but he’s stuck at his weight. I personally believe to run a successful 3-4 scheme you need defensive ends who are more like Gallimore and Walker, those are BIG boys. I think this year we see more of the big bodies step up. Like you said, I hope both prove us all wrong and step up. Part of it was on Mike for not making the proper adjustments throughout the game. I think he’s going to watch so much film on Texsa and Clemson and figure out why they gashed us with the QB runs and counter plays. I think those are easy fixes. I also think your understating how big of an impact the loss to Walker really was for us. Either way my dude I hope we figure it out! We’ve got a brutal schedule and let’s hope we can remain healthy next year and we should be fine. I wasn’t really trying I pick an argument with you, I just don’t agree with the Michigan statement because I really don’t believe they worthy of the hype, at least right now.

          • CS says:

You are good buddy, a good argument can get the mind right most times, I appreciate it. I agree with your sentiment that Mich is not a good team but I disagree in saying that they have a good D and OLine, but at the end of the day, the team is all that matters, if the kids gel together or not.

Yes, Walker is a beast, and here is to him staying healthy and creating havoc.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

We’ve got this! I guess we just need to bring in Greg Rogers and Marvin to help out that Dline 🙂

          • SamSooner says:

            I’m with you, Vegas.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

We definitely belonged in that game, but like I said, a few plays didn’t go our way plus that stupid penalty by flowers when we were moving right along. Injuries pilled up as well. We were relatively injury free until that last game. It got to the point where in the fourth quarter I just wanted our guys to remain healthy lol. I didn’t even care about winning at that point. We moved the ball fine between the 20’s lol just couldn’t finish some drives. It’s also mind boggling how coach V’s defense can give us fits when our coaches are the ones who taught him everything lol. Oh well.

          • SamSooner says:

Vegas, you nailed it. I was confused as to why Que didn’t get any playing time. I mean, the interior line was gassed. Even if you don’t trust him to know his assignment, the result would have been the same if you don’t give the other guys a break for a bit. That was the only thing that had me scratching my head.

Once again, though: the officials let Clemson’s DB get away with too much yacking: I saw the officials looking right at him and let it go.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Exactly right about Q. Clemson’s Dbs were mauling/ talking ish to our receivers the entire game but whatever I guess. I would love to beat their arse in the Natty this year to revenge those losses. I’m not going to lie though, when I saw us get matched up with them I thought it was destiny that our team revenges every loss we had the year before.

          • cush creekmont says:

The O-line “youth” did not help, but the two linemen that played the worst and led to OUr offensive woes were seniors and are gone. This year’s “youthful” line will be FAR superior to last year’s “more experienced” line.

On defense, having NO Walker hurt the front.

While I think some plays could have improved OUr chances, the better team won that game. OU overachieved on offense due to the talent of Baker – this year, he has more help even losing the great talent that was Shep.

And like you, Vegas – just MHO 🙂

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

            Agree.

Did we ever get confirmation on the rumor a while back that Flowers broke his elbow riding a 4-wheeler?

  • BigJoeBrown says:

One article that was really impressive was the ESPN one about how the Oklahoma offense will improve. Talked about the relationship Baker has with his teammates and being able to feed off each other and get an idea of adapting with Mayfield to find success. Specifically go to 01:18 in the video were you see the Dimitri Flowers TD from Mayfield. Flowers hearing Mayfield scramble, then rolling off his block and find an opening.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

As often as I’ve watched that play, this was the first time I was aware that Flowers was in pass protect and just wandered out once Bake started to improvise. Very freaking cool, and good on Flowers for recognizing!

    • cush creekmont says:

My goodness, Metz – I did not realize that texsa sucked at 9:43 – my bad. I promise to do better keeping an eye on texsa suckage.

I go back to that play in my dreams when I’m searching for meaning in life.

    • Oscar says:

    • BigJoeBrown says:

This is awesome…as Joe Biden once said, “This is a big F***$ing deal”
Really goes to show the respect and the big picture of what is going on with OU athletics.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

Dang! Did you see the spread between the Best and the next? We didn’t just win–we absolutely CRUSHED it!

    • cush creekmont says:

The “values” are still goofy – It appears that Stanford gets more points than all but Alabama and Stanford did NOT make the football final four.

      • Brent says:

stanford “program” is hard to beat. their women’s teams and non-revenue sports are well funded and always nationally competitive.

        • cush creekmont says:

Yes, but it was their football score that had them as high as they were – winning a bowl game but still NOT making the final-four. Stanford football got some 212 points, Alabama 250 (for the NC!) and OU got only 180+.

Im not a big fan of Nate Diaz but I applaud him for standing his ground against the UFC and Dana White ( who Im even less a big fan of )

    Really an excellent article.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Dana makes me sick. He’s making a killing while these guys are beating the ish out of each other only to then pay them nothing. I get its not as popular as boxing, but these fighters are getting hosed.

      • Fear The Magic says:

Yes unless your name is Conor McGregor, Ronda Rousey along with a few other cash cows, you’re probaby getting the shaft from Dana White.
Im sure in the not too distant future many of the UFCs fighters will switch to Bellator. Free agency is about to hit big time in the MMA.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Even then, those ‘big name’ fighters are making pennies on the dollar. I’m excited for 200 this weekend though. I just want some nasty fights to happen lol. I’m still waiting for us to bring back gladiators lmao. That’s something I would pay to see haha.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

We should probably not discuss this though, it’s a football thread, remember?

      • SoonerFan92 says:

I read somewhere that UFC has far surpassed Boxing. Talked about how boxing was a dying sport. So I would have to disagree with your statement about the UFC not being as popular as Boxing.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Hmmm, you could be right. I kind of just made the statement off my observation. Lol

      • j l says:

With floyd retired(for now), UFC will do bigger PPV #’s than boxing, and a WHOLE lot more cards throughout the year.

Maybe the new owners will up fighter base pay.

+1000. The center & guard positions will be MUCH more physical this year!

  • Oscar says:

When do players report for fall camp?

    • blaster1371 says:

I don’t have an exact answer to your question. The rules state teams can begin practice 30 days before thier first game. So that would put OU the first week of August ( if I remember right their first game is Sept 3).

    • KJ1123 says:

August 3rd report, practice on the 4th.

  • j l says:

I cant envision houson having a better D line than us. Their best player was 2nd team all whatever weak conference? Color me unimpressed.
Walker is a legit 1st round draft pick, better than any established player they have. Overton did a really good job last year as a true freshman, and dimon and co. are all solid foundation players.

    • Brent says:

you’re forgetting their recruiting class, but I tend to agree with you overall i like OU a little more

      • j l says:

Well im ignoring both sides that have no experience, to try and keep as many unknowns out of the conversation.

Yes, they have oliver, and hes a stud, but we have gallimore, bledsoe, jackson, etc. We just dont know what any of those kids are capable of yet.

    • blaster1371 says:

What raises some concern with me is how Akron’s d-line pretty much stoned the OU run game in last year’s season opener. I know that was with two freshmen guards but OU will have a new center and two new guards this season and Houston is, IMO, a step up in competition.

      • ouwooferman says:

This was the case. Although OU has a long history of slow starting, I believe being in year 2 of LR’s Offense, we will be running and gunning from the get go. We just have to survive the the first qrt emotions from Cougar High.

      • cush creekmont says:

Yes, but we will NOT have the two weakest interior linemen for Houston to “stone” like we had last year.

      • MoJoOkie says:

If I recall correctly, Akron had some transfers from bigger schools along their front seven. Seems like they had a couple of former tOSU players on the DL. Don’t know if those players were rejects or disciplinary transfers, but they were purported to be good players prior to our game with them. Solid front seven on that team.

      • jimintexas says:

Many factors are different. Akron has an decent and experienced defensive line that could attack the OU freshmen. This was the OC’s first game with a total different group of players. Everyone understands what they have this year. This was the QB’s first game to start in two years.

Results may not change. But, there are more differences than similarities.

      • SamSooner says:

Don’t forget that Akron had 3 DL transfers from D1 schools: 2 from tOSU and 1 from Pitt.

Well the new center is a guard with a year of experience, so im a little less worried about that. Plus that was game 1 of a brand new OC/system and QB

      • DrewChubbs says:

Our run game really didn’t wake up till 3 or 4 games in anyway. It wasn’t just an Akron thing. Kind of a gelling process with the OL and knocking the rust off for Baker. And it seemed to me that we really put a re-emphasis on the running identity of the team after the texsa game. I think we’ll come out of the gates this year knowing who we are, and not testing the waters so much.

  • KJ1123 says:

SO according to the blog above….we’re losing to TCU but beating tOSU……..ok.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Lol. Head scratcher. I personally believe that IF we beat Houston and tOSU then there’s no way we lose in the regular season. I think catching TCU early should help our chances since they have to figure out their offense. I just think our confidence will be sky high if we start 3-0 and that Bake and company will be focused in each week. I don’t believe any defense in the big12 can hold us under 35 points except maybe TCU and Texsa. That first month I’ll be telling that’s all I’m saying lol.

      • cush creekmont says:

Reasonable, Vegas. I still worry a little about WVU this year.

        • KJ1123 says:

Late in the season in Morgantown, yeah I can see that.

          • cush creekmont says:

If we are sailing along, it will be a night game. It is so hard to win playing by the light of a hundred burning couches.

      • KJ1123 says:

I just dont see where TCU is going to produce on offense like they have the last couple of years. Hicks is good, but other than that I’m not sure anyone else has a huge impact. Defensively I think they’ll be pretty good.

        • Matt says:

          Kenny Trill man….

          • KJ1123 says:

He’s good, I think he’ll be really good when he’s done. But as far as QBs in the conference are concerned, there’s better imo.

          • Matt says:

            definitely.

          • Krys Allen says:

Problem is we didn’t even play some of the best QB’s in the conference last year due to injury and this year we have a question mark starting at one of our corners. We always have trouble scoring on TCU, so that game is a huge concern for me.

          • KJ1123 says:

That’s true. We played two of them in Mahone and Rudolph (sort of), but Russell and Boykin would of been a really good measuring stick.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

For sure. Defensively they’ll always be good under Paterson, but I agree with your thoughts on their offense.

        • j l says:

Yep. Doctson was an amazing receiver, and green was a pretty strong tailback. Just dont see them having replacements for them. Turpin is a damn good WR, but hes no doctson.

        • Brent says:

it’s the gary patterson effect. that guy scares me more than any other coach in the country.

    • cush creekmont says:

Well sure, KJ – OU can’t be allowed to be that good two years in a row….

We need to take them out again. Don’t know if texsa, or Okie lite can manage to beat them. WVU seems to be more a worry to me.
