That would obviously be really soon. I’ve accepted the reality that expansion is happening. I’ve also accepted that will be 1000% straight cash grab bringing in four schools that add literally nothing to the league. The current schools will leverage the desperation of those four schools to low-ball them with respect to their ‘share’ of the Big 12 pie to get themselves the little extra money this is all about. Then barring some other-worldly idiocy on OU’s and/or Texas’ part in agreeing to extend the current grant of rights, the Big 12 will cease to exist come 2024-25 when the GOR expires.

This way texsa gets a few more dollars to spend on runner-up rings and trophies for almost being special….

The most obvious name is five-star point guard Trae Young, who played with Porter on MoKan Elite and has been discussed in a potential package deal with Porter for more than a year now. Oklahoma has emerged as the favorite for Young, with Kansas and Kentucky also making him a priority.

There are two main reasons to expand. Really, one main reason, and one secondary reason.
The main reason is money. There is little to no doubt that the Big 12, and OU specifically, will get more money after expansion. And this has been the biggest complain from those that want to jump to the SEC or Big 10. So I’m really not sure how you can be against expansion when it brings in more money. Even if it doesn’t put us on par with the SEC or Big 10, it’s gets us closer, and there aren’t going to be any teams from the SEC, Big 10, ACC, or PAC willing to leave that conference for the Big 12. So P5 is the ONLY way to expand, and thus ensure more money. Better to expand now, and be getting that extra money for the next 7-8 years before the GOR expires.
The second reason to expand is to increase the competitiveness within a conference. I think this is a VERY small reason for expansion, in part because most of the recent expansion in other conferences did not result in teams joining said conferences, that were expected to be near the top of the football standings. Rutgers, Maryland, and Neb aren’t going to be top tier Big 10 teams. Mizzou and aTm aren’t going to be top tier SEC teams. Utah and Colorado aren’t going to be top tier PAC teams. So the myth of adding power teams is just that, a myth. The Big 12 adding BYU, Cincy, and whatever else they decide to add isn’t going to hurt the competitiveness of the league. I’d argue that BYU is probably as good of an add as any team I mentioned above, with the possible exception of aTm.
I get that most of you want to leave. But that isn’t happening until the GOR is up in 8 years. With that said, why anybody would be against expansion between now and then (8 years) boggles my mind. We get more money (probably significantly more). I think we add at least a team or two that is middle of the pack worthy in football, and possibly better in basketball. There really is ZERO downside as long as we don’t have to extend the GOR.
OU explored making a move to the Big 10 sooner than in 8 years, and while nobody knows the specifics, it obviously wasn’t something that could be done at this time. The Big 12 was going to wait on expansion to see if maybe the ACC could break apart. They just got their tv deal, so they will not be breaking up. The Big 12 and OU are pretty limited in their options at this point. Expanding and reevaluating things in 7-8 years seems like the best scenario to me.
So Jordan, my question to you would be what is wrong with a “money grab” as you called it? Did all of the other conferences (or most of them) not do the same thing and limit the income of the expansion teams for a time? Also, the Big 12 isn’t going to cease to exist if it is expanded by 4 teams, when the GOR is up. The only way that would happen is if OU/ut/KU leaves for the Big 10, and some portion of the remaining schools leave for the PAC. I think that is unlikely, and I also think that is a small reason for expansion also. If OU/ut/KU know they are probably leaving, but want to take care of their conference mates, expanding does that. It doesn’t ensure a P5 conference once they are gone, but it does ensure a conference could remain. And while it wouldn’t be on par with the Big 10/SEC/PAC/ACC, it would be significantly better than any other conference.

Decent analysis. I don’t really care for BYU. My list would include Cincinnati, UCF, Memphis, South Florida. But those are more favored because of (1) personal geography (they’re closer to me) and (2) recruiting inroads to Ohio, Tennessee, and Florida. Also might add that given any opportunity at all, I’m a “OU to the SEC” fan.
I think your list is the most realistic. Not sure about BYU either because of all the issues around no Sunday participation in games.

I know Boise St is not being mentioned much but I kind of like them and BYU as football only. Add Memphis and Cincy as full members. All 4 teams make significant more than current situations but not as much as full members until certain criteria are met with facilities, athletic budget, fan attendance etc.
See my (1) geography is important because I live in Kentucky. 8>)
Edit: All other factors about Boise would be positive though.

I agree! Boise/OU offers the best match-up out of any of those teams with any of the current teams. People outside of the Big12 would be more likely to tune in to watch a Fiesta Bowl rematch than say, Cincy/TCU.
It won’t have the sustaining power. OU will crush them in Norman year one. Boise St plays on a blue turf and has lower academic standards.
I disagree. I think there is plenty of downside to expansion. When the GOR expires, you will have more schools clamoring for OU to stay in the Big Xii. The politicians will say, but you’ve got 12 members again, you’ve got a championship game, you need to stay. Expanding will make leaving more difficult.
The Big XII won’t go 8 years without expanding. And if we want to leave after that, 2/4 more teams crying in the background won’t make any difference whatsoever.
I’ve read all the theories that adding four teams will make it easier for us to leave in a few years. I’m very skeptical. Most of that is coming from those who have a preference for saving the Big Xii. I’d like to go ahead and set it on fire now.

There are many who believe that the only reason OU is still in this conference is OSU. There are many who believe OU can’t leave OSU behind.
There are many who believe we never landed on the moon as well.
I can’t speak for the initial time expansion talks happened a few years ago. Maybe OU didn’t want to move without OSU then. But now? I’ve seen no indication that would be a problem.
Try hanging out on some of the threads dedicated to conference realignment. Quite a few there who insist that OU must take OSU with them. Mostly OSU fans who are afraid of the consequences of being left behind.

Steve Owens was great. I attended OU and watched his entire career. IIRC, he’s the only significant OU running back who never lost a yard on a carry.
He was ‘sneaky’ though. He would go to the ground cradling the ball near his chest with both hands. As he stood up, he would roll over and move the ball forward. Most of the time, he got away with it.
Travian was my favorite player while in HS
