FOOTBALL (FREE)

A couple recent local sports headlines I’ve seen: ‘Baker Mayfield is comfortable in the spotlight’ & ‘Baylor’s demise helps OU & OSU, hurts Big 12’

Wow!!! Thanks for blowing the lid off those breaking stories, fellas. I can’t imagine why print media is struggling to survive with such buzz-worthy stories like those.

Couldn’t remember whether or not we’d already posted this. If so, apologies.

To be perfectly honest, I’m kind of amazed Scout even still exists. I don’t think I know a single person that pays for it.

And perhaps more to my point, I’m not entirely sure what purpose recruiting services even serve these days. Granted, there’s the obvious bias of my role here at TFB but even if that weren’t the case, I’d still feel the same.

I get the sense that if you’ve paid for them for any substantial period of time, you’re really continuing to hand your money over as a result of the “community” much more so than any information these $ sites might provide.

Because it’s certainly out there to be had free of charge, that’s for sure. Whether via sites like this one, free message boards, and especially social media, there are any number of alternatives available to those who are interested.

But to each their own I suppose.

(Ed. note – Didn’t really feel like this needed to be said, but just to be 100% perfectly clear the comments above are mine and mine alone. I’m not speaking on behalf of anyone else at TFB other than myself.)

Why would he do that since he has SEC offers? Remember, good players don’t want to play in the Little 12-2.

      • Scott says:

I doubt OU is recruiting him , OU is recruiting CD and 5 star Joseph Lewis.

        • UGA Sooner says:

Joseph Lewis would be the cherry on top for this class. It’s a long shot and I think Nebraska has a better shot (knows a quarterback there or something like that), but we need to start recruiting these big receivers that don’t flame out like Norvell’s seemed to do way too many times

          • Scott says:

I still got hope for Joseph Lewis , Dennis Simmons is recruiting him ( Dennis Simmons is a Cali guy) and OU is one of the top schools recruiting him the hardest.

          • UGA Sooner says:

He does a good job of not showing which schools he likes on twitter

          • Boom says:

As far as WR, the cherry would be Tyrell Shavers out of Lewisville.

          • UGA Sooner says:

I was talking more about a cherry we have a shot with. Shavers isn’t leaving Alabama unless Saban miraculously gets punished for all his infractions

          • Boom says:

Never know. The issue is, OU has never offered him. Talked to his dad and he never understood why OU never offered. He had over 40 so maybe he’s not a fit. However, he’s a freaking stud. My .02 cents.

          • UGA Sooner says:

I was unaware we didn’t offer him. There are definitely a handful of head scratchers every year. Marquis Hayes would be another, IMO. Granted I’m sure the coaches feel good about 2 lineman, but still. That kid is phenomenal

    • CrimsonNative says:

Barry may have had some questionable actions in his coaching career while at OU, but he is the type of coach, IMO, that would have not only fired Sandusky, but then he would have personally kicked his a** right after.

      • UGA Sooner says:

I agree. Barry didn’t play by all the rules, but I like to think he had the brain and heart to rid OU of someone like that, if it happened there (OU)

      • Walter Sobcek says:

  • Bob Edwards says:

In regard to Scout, I want there to be a site that covers recruiting from a national perspective. School sites are always biased towards that school, yes even TFB. I would like to know what our realistic chances of getting a player are not the chances filtered through someone who wants to bring good news to the home team.
However, I am not sure there is enough money in that to keep it going. All of the national sites now have a “community” for each school, but that costs a lot to maintain unless the people reporting for each school are willing to do it for free.

    • CrimsonNative says:

I agree, a realistic chance. Good call.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I hear Magic 8 Balls are more reliable than Crystal Balls – FWIW

    • Jordan Esco says:

I’d like to believe if there is one thing I’ve been it’s realistic. I would argue it has earned me a reputation for “always being so negative” but I have never, nor will ever, be someone who is going to blow sunshine up your a$$ when it comes to recruiting, or OU football in general.

DEFINITELY doesn’t mean I’ll always be right, but I can promise you’ll get an honest, objective take from me at all times.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

The opinion business is tough work. You’re going to take fire no matter what you say. And to try an predict what a 17 yr old is going to do several months out is no easy gig either. I take everything with a grain of salt anymore and don’t really get excited until the ink dries.

        • Drew says:

That’s one reason why I don’t watch highlight reels of recruits until they at least verbal commit. I’d rather not get myself hyped about their potential when they’re going to end up signing w/ UT, Bama. or tOSU.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I used to watch highlight videos and get all excited about them, but I stopped watching most of them. It is just a huge transition between HS and College level football that I have learned to withold my judgement until I see them against D1 competition. So many “can’t miss” prospects actually missed when they moved up to D1. Trying not to be a Negative Nancy, but just more realistic on their abilities and maturation into the next level. A lot of them don’t make the adjustment, while ignored others thrive. Trying to predict this with consistency is very, very, very difficult.

          • Drew says:

Another thing is that a lot of the really sweet, fun plays you see happen b/c they get themselves out of close calls. While it’s fun to watch, and certainly takes some skill to get out of, the fact is at the next lvl they’d have been beat, plain and simple. The jump in speed between levels is just too high.

          • Bob Edwards says:

On major problem in projecting kids at the next level is assessing the level of their high school coaching. A kid with a good high school coach may be at 90% of his potential whereas a kid with bad coaching may be making plays based on athletic ability alone. So one 4* kid may be a 3* talent with a 5* coach and another is a 5* talent with a 3* coach. The second one is likely to do better in college because he has more room to grow.

          • Dick Bump says:

Yep. It’s pretty much a crap shoot in many ways as I’m sure Mack Brown can tell you. It amazes me how well OUs coaches do at evaluating talent.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yes, this ^^^^^. Stoops and Company do a pretty good job at evaluations. I’ve always wondered what their secret sauce is?

          • Dick Bump says:

It would be incredibly hard for me to judge talent of a kid that will likely grow 1 to 6 inches and maybe add 1/2 his weight. Then again, there are people on the boards who can look at a 30 sec. clip and project his pro career.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

All the clips I’ve ever watched showed a very talented player in relation to the competition of the moment. It fools me everytime, so I’m not sure how they project. I really would like to know the formula.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

And also the level of competition muddies the water on evaluations. I agree better coaching will increase the odds of success, but still no guarantee.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Fair enough. However, there is still the perception that, because it is an OU only site, there is a bias in that direction. If for no other reason, that when a kid gets a call from an OU site his answers are going to be OU focused, and given human nature he is more likely to say something positive regarding OU than he would be if he perceived the guy he was talking to was a “national” guy.
And don’t get me wrong, I didn’t say that I thought any of the sites give that, just that I would like there to be one.

        • SoonerFan92 says:

The only thing I would wonder about is if the national recruiting service would be able to get the fine detail that local sites could since they would be covering such a broad scope.

        • Jordan Esco says:

Everything you said is more than fair.

And you’re right, any “fan site” will be met w/ the inherent bias, fair or not, that they’re homers for their school.

I think the pay sites have all made an effort to have “national” guys on staff, but as I suspect you’re well aware there is a reason the school-specific sites are their bread-and-butter. Fans want to hear about their school and the kids that school is in on.

To the point below by SoonerFan92, to ask a handful of guys to cover things on a national basis just isn’t realistic.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well my comments were mostly directed to your comment about what purpose they serve. They do, in theory, serve a purpose even if their inability to monetize it may make it unrealistic.

          • Jordan Esco says:

            You’re 100% right.

          • soonermusic says:

I gotta believe that most schools don’t have a site anywhere near as informative and constructive as TFB. I haven’t seen one. While those other sites can’t measure up around here, my only thought is that they may be the best thing going for “other folks.” You know, the underprivileged masses…:-)

          • soonermusic says:

            ha!

          • Jordan Esco says:

Could be. I’m certainly proud of the work the guys here do on a daily basis, but I’m also VERY much not one to pat myself (or in this case guys like K, Brandon, etc.) on the back. And while I know it’s Texas, the guys over on that TFB site work their a$$es off, I know that for a fact.

So I think it’s fair to say sites like TFB may (key word) be the exception, but even if it’s just a free message board btwn that and social media I find it hard to believe you could satisfy whatever information need one may (or may not) have.

But again, TO EACH THEIR OWN (the caps is for others benefit, not yours soonermusic 🙂

If you want to pay for these sites, be my guest.

I would never, have never, nor will I ever begrudge anyone from trying to acquire as much info on OU — be it football or otherwise — from however many sources they deem justifiable.

        • Dick Bump says:

          Like ESPN?

          • Bob Edwards says:

In theory ESPN could be that. However, the recruiting part of ESPN is tied to the broadcast part of ESPN. The broadcast part of ESPN has billions of dollars worth of contracts with certain groups. That gives them obvious biases towards those groups.

          • Farmer Glickstein says:

            s E c SP i N bias? Surely you jest!

          • Dick Bump says:

I agree, there’s always going to be biases, either from the sources of information (coaches, ect.) or money matters (catering to one group or another either to enhance viewership or fulfill an obligation).

      • JB says:

Jordan, I’ve noticed there are those who will hate on you if you don’t drink the Kool-Aid and pump sunshine all the time. These are the same people who thought John Blake was a good “coach” and shouldn’t be fired. I would lose all respect if you didn’t speak your mind and tell things like they are. Truth be told that while I like all of the TFB contributors, I enjoy reading your articles the most.

        • Jordan Esco says:

          Much appreciated.

And let me clear I definitely was NOT fishing for compliments. I’m fine w/ whatever others want to think of me (or think they know about me). If I wasn’t, I would have quit doing this a long time ago.

I share my opinion, but it’s just that, my opinion. I completely understand and respect the right of others if they choose not to give a rip about it/me.

        • Jordan Esco says:

It’s always funny how things work themselves out. I know a lot of us were wondering “WTF” is going on and why are all the 2016 Bailor players heading to tu and not OU. And then we hear all of the news from The Opening and everything makes perfect sense. Our team right now is AMAZING and the Super Squad players coming in for next year is just going to make OU that much better. The Bailor players knew they would really have to work hard to get playing time at OU but at tu they can put one foot in the door and automatically get playing time. Not everyone is cut out to work their butts off and become a legendary Sooner and that’s exactly why…. There’s Only One…BOOM!

  • Jordan Esco says:

Guess my ‘hot takes’ this morning weren’t quite hot enough. Back to the ol’ drawing board.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

I could do without the whole lion dialogie at the beginning of the highlght reel. Just hit the music and let the players do the talking on the field.

  • Boom says:

Jordan, while I agree that the print media is dying, there is still a fairly big group reading. However, that group is old and won’t be around much longer. My father is one of them and he just doesn’t like the computer. I compare the print media to the Buick cars, once the older folks die, both won’t be around.

    • Brent says:

wait…Tiger Woods doesn’t actually drive his Buick????

      • SoonerFan92 says:

More than likely not, but you can bet your a$$ that Mathew McConaughey drives his Lincoln! LOL

      • AltoidSooner says:

Would like to know how many NBA players drive Kias as the official car of the NBA. Think most MVPs “charitably” donate their Kias to an an unfortunate family. The family is no doubt worse off after owning a Kia.

    • Jordan Esco says:

My father is one of them as well. Still gets a paper every day. Constantly complains to me about how worthless it is and says he’s going to cancel, but I believe to this day still gets it mainly out of habit (how he grew up, reading the paper, he says).

And I get that. But to your point those people have quickly become the minority and, IMO, have clearly done a very, very poor job in adapting to the times.

It’s a conversation I have w/ friends all the time and goes to the first point I made in the post about the headlines.

Why in the hell would I want to read either of those stories based on either lede? Neither could have possibly been more ‘Captain Obvious’ type of stories.

It’s why I have never envied beat writers. Man, would I hate that job. Respectfully, I don’t need you to tell me what happened in the game. I watched it, I know what happened.

What I want from someone who is w/ the team every day (in theory, not necessarily literally) is information you have that I don’t as a result of your access.

Yet I have to constantly remind myself that I’m not the “typical” fan. And that, the “typical” fan who only casually follows things rather than obsessively like myself, is who the beat writer is catering to, I’m assuming.

I don’t know, that job is just a very unenviable position to be in IMO. They’re not allowed to really express their opinions, at least in print anyways, and yet that’s all someone like myself would ever really care about.

And that’s a big part of why I think that form of media is dying. Opinions are what people want. And I don’t mean the dumb AF shouting for the sake of shouting type of opinions on s#$% like First Take. I mean opinions of people whom you or I actually value.

Or at least that’s how I see it.

      • SoonerMagic76 says:

I think I accidentally down voted this at first… oops.

But I definitely agree- I don’t need the base recaps, which is what a lot of sites do. What I want, like you mentioned, is information I have no way to get on my own. Or analysis that I’m not smart enough to give. Which is what I find here.

      • Dick Bump says:

There’s always the people that didn’t watch the game, although fewer with all of the access these days. I guess when the style was developed, they only showed one or two games a week on tv.

      • Boom says:

I’m with you and appreciate the work done at TFB. Human nature is some adapt quicker than others but if you want something, you learn. I like to give the example of the ATM. Some didn’t want to use it but you learn how cause they want cash.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Until Georgia and OU sued the NCAA in 1984 over TV rights, there were only a couple of games on TV each week. There was no Internet and radio usually only carried the local teams. That meant most news came from the newspaper. Back then, what they wrote was information that nobody else had. However, that’s not true anymore. The newspaper haven’t adapted to the times and are dead. The corpse is still around and stinking up the place, but eventually it will completely rot away.

      • Dick Bump says:

Do “beat writers” or any “newspaper writer” have and seek out new sources?
It just seems they just ask the same mundane questions at coaches and staff.

“Quote quote… two line opinion.. Stat.. stat.. quote.. opinion.. stat.. last line that ties to the article.”
Where as places like TFB have gradually established and continue to establish relationships with sources. Keep finding sources. Credibility.
        Break news straight forward.
Opinions are backed by first hand info, quality sources, and quite frankly already a better sense of the sport.

        • Jordan Esco says:

Do “beat writers” or any “newspaper writer” have and seek out new sources? – I would have thought that was a primary part of their job, but I’ve never had it so I don’t know.

    • Jed says:

While I agree, on-line news services have a looooooooong way to go to get to the point, in terms of speed and depth, that print provides today. Specialty services like TFB are one thing, but general purpose news sites are clunky and slow to navigate and contain far fewer stories and in much less depth than print.
I can read the NYT (scanning headlines, skimming some articles, ignoring others and completely reading some) during the course of an hour commute to work and have a pretty good handle on what’s happening in the world.
With on-line media, you get a lot of glitz and pop ups and motion and color…and zero depth or breadth. It’s kind of like a never ending series of cat videos, pop sci ‘polls’ and grocery store tabloid filler. (for ref, see, Fox, or CNN. BBC does a bit better and some German and Japanese sites (in English) are pretty good, as well).

“The materials released today relating to Joe Paterno allege a conversation that occurred decades ago where all parties except the accuser are now dead. In addition, there are numerous specific elements of the accusations that defy all logic and have never been subjected to even the most basic objective examination. Most significantly, there is extensive evidence that stands in stark contrast to this claim.”

Pretty much for those sites what you do is think of the least exciting thing that could fit their teaser and that is probably it. So the decision coming up is that he is putting out a top 10 and having a hard time deciding who #10 is.

I realize that a lot of their titles are click bait, but it was posted today while his top 10 came out a few days ago. I’m not saying there is any concrete journalism related to the article, just thought I would post about it.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

He’s actually stated he wants to decide a school before his season starts which is really Soon. Hopefully he’ll make the right choice :). I do get that you were mocking paid sites but still lol

        • Bob Edwards says:

Then that is probably the decision that is “coming up soon.” They are probably just talking about the fact that he is going to make the decision and maybe some speculation on the decision itself. I could be wrong but that is the typical ploy they use.

      • Mark_in_VA says:

You may be giving them too much credit. It could just be that he’s closing in on a decision between Taco Bell and McDonald’s for lunch.

  • Bob Edwards says:

    TFB – The Kansas Edition

    – Marvin Wilson: As promised we caught up with five star defensive Tackle Marvin Wilson (Bellaire Episcopal, TX ) to talk about his recent offer from the Jayhawks. At first he was a little confused as he did not realize that Kansas had a football team. However after a few minutes conversation and sending him to the website, we convinced him that Kansas really did have a team and had made him an offer.
He thought that was cool and said he would see if his mom had already taken out the trash so he could retrieve the offer letter. It’s our opinion that, now that her recognizes we are serious, we have a really good shot at getting him on campus since he is already planing on a trip with stops at OU, OSU, KSU and Nebraska.

Kid was abusing tackles all day long at the opening. His speed and footwork are insane already! Once OBO is gone we can have this man and Jackson flying off the edge? Ok.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I think today I’m going to drop by the Texas side and ask them the percentages they think they have at landing Big Marv, Hines and a few others lol.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

So is Tramanda a legit option for us? Aren’t we only looking to take 2 more offensive lineman?

  • metzker says:

Well i do have my 1:00 meeting today, ive heard a decision is coming soon!

  • Coach JK says:

Does anyone have recent pictures of the stadium? I was keeping a good eye on it until the live cam on SoonerSports quit working.

    • Tony B says:

Inside the stadium as of yesterday.

      • Coach JK says:

        Any pics to share?

        • Tony B says:

These came from another sight I was on sorry. That’s all I downloaded. One is from the Sooner Sports cam while it was up for a short time yesterday.

    • Tony B says:

And here’s one from the outside as of yesterday.

      • Coach JK says:

        Thanks!!

      • Dick Bump says:

That’s going to be a monster! Expand anymore and they’ll have to close Lindsay.

      • metzker says:

Wow ,anyone know what is to be complete for gameday?Looks like something my company would put me on,um get it done no matter what.Yes 2 crews 24hrs a day.Do able yes I assume the sides are mostly open with guard rails.Hope the elevator shafts are dried in.Looks to be alot of work left, but i dont know what will be open to the public or not,but if the whole outside facade is to be done, well thats why i have no hair.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I was under the impression it was all supposed to be complete for Gameday. I think the locker rooms and other stuff is coming at a later date. I could be completely wrong though Metz 🙂 lol

        • DR LEO MARVIN says:

I could have gotten it done on time 18 hours a day anything for the Boomer Sooner. Of course what do I know I just built a stadium two years ago.

        • Mark_in_VA says:

I don’t work in construction, but my thoughts for the last couple of pics have been, “Wow, that doesn’t look like there’s any way it’s done by the season.” Glad you think it looks doable, because to me that looks like about 6-8 months away!

        • Tony B says:

I concur Metz. I have been on a couple of stadium projects (not quite this large) and have had start of season deadlines. They are behind no way around it. They will undoubtedly have a lot of temp handrail and many things blocked off to the public as the season starts. They may have a shot at having the majority of the façade and interior stadium sections complete by tOSU game though. That is if the weather cooperates and they work around the clock like I’d bet they are now doing. That brick work has a long way to go. They may have to bring in another sub to help out. The elevator shaft should cure but those elevator guys take forever so you may be right on that one. I’d bet there are some stiff liquidated damages if that bad boy isn’t where OU wants it to be in about a month and a half.

          • metzker says:

Is the center all brick and stone?Elevators suck as we know, maybe hydros?Temp entrance thru the center, concrete and pavers?Looks like 60 days on scoreboard, they will say 5 weeks,NOT!I was lead super on Techs stadium press box etc.We didnt look like that 60 days out. Im sure there are aspects of the exterior that all understood what would and would not be complete.Norman fire marshals ok?Guess they will have fire watch on site.BLAH BLAH BLAH My job im on looks the same grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
O Doc got 2 good ones running on cruse control go figure!!!!

          • Tony B says:

I am not sure on the front. With the structural studs (or at least that’s what they look like it could be a number of anything going across the front but I’d assume it’d be similar to the rest of the stadium. I saw that the scoreboard was supposed to start 2-3 weeks ago but was delayed because of either misfab issues with some steel or design flaw for the scoreboard support. They are now saying the scoreboard will start late this week or early next. I hate jobs like this and they usually are complete chaos, especially about right now. Thankfully I am on a pretty simple 100,000sf metal building with very little inside except HVAC, plumbing, electric, and 4 large OH cranes. It’s going pretty smooth and should finish a little ahead for a change. I hope yours turns around.

          • metzker says:

Thanks Tony,i started out with a bad concrete sub that i have finally ran off.I went to our main office 2 weeks in and told the owner, hey you put me in the Kentucky Derby on a donkey,so they cant say i didn’t voice my concerns CYA On a 6 grand a day LQDS

          • DR LEO MARVIN says:

Not Cruse control on one of them but it will be soon. The new school is lol.

          • metzker says:

If this is the finish out, well a lot wont be done this season! Not being negative just facts!———–

      • metzker says:

Did not realize you can click and zoom, holy crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • DR LEO MARVIN says:

If it is all exterior studs and sheathing with face brick and cast stone. See what it looks like in two weeks and we will have a good idea. It is doable 18 hours a day but you need 3 to 4 weeks for all the face brick alone.

    • Unofficial Longhorn says:

      I’m always lurking. That’s a given. The important thing is… I ain’t snitchin though.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Cuz you know we are by far the superior school and you envy us to the max lol. It’s ok though, maybe, just maybe this year you’ll crack .500! The only thing bright about the Texsa football is yalls hideous uniforms.

        • Unofficial Longhorn says:

You mean the uniforms recently voted best in the conference??? And hey, y’all had the better program for the last few years running, this might be your last year though. Enjoy while you can. 2017 will be upon soon.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Who conducted this vote? This will certainly not be our last year. I appreciate your optimism for you program but to say this is our last year is ludicrous. You see, the difference between y’all and us is a down year for us is anything under 10 wins and well, the same thing cannot be said about y’all. That watered down version of Baylors offense won’t do a damn thing on us this year. The defense you have is nice, but that’s about it. You Longhorns better pray we don’t have another conference championship or playoff run because that will absolutely destroy you. We’ll have blue chips at every position. Fans of other teams don’t realize that our redshirt freshman a long with some other young players are straight beasts. Should be interesting. Btw I’m just poking the bear with you 🙂 all fun and game!

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Well anything under 10 wins is a down year for us too. That’s why you’ve been getting blue chips! I don’t want to hear any belly aching when the same offense that Tulsa baptized your defense with last year is unleashed again on y’all again, but with better players… In all honesty, I think the only way we get 10 wins this year comes in the form of a bowl win. 2017 though????

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I love how the Tulsa game is all Longhorns argument. That game is taken out on context by anyone other that sooner fans. We were absolutely smoking them like a joint which caused them to just throw it up every play. We had a true freshman corner who got abused the entire game. Why don’t you look at the Baylor game when we aboutely shut them down. 17 will be insane but next year I’m not worried about y’all. 🙂

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

See, but when UT fans mention that almost all of our best players last year were freshmen, we’re told we’re making excuses. Risk tisk. You say it’s taken out of context, I look at the context of Tulsa’s season and see they did y’all the same way they did most everyone else. I guess it’s a matter of perspective, and I guess perspective is a matter of preference… Either way, NO BELLY ACHING! Lol

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Well those are just talking heads. Anyone with a brain realizes y’all are a QB away from 6-8 wins then just throw in more experience, I can see why 17 has y’all excited. I want that RRR game to be the big 12 defacto game like it was my entire childhood.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Yeah, that was always fun knowing that the winner of that game was more than likely going to be the conference champion. I won’t lie though, I always wanted to see us duke it out in a real conference championship game.

          • Boom says:

It will be good match ups, no doubt. However, they key is how Buchele plays and more importantly how he improves to his 2nd year.
Charlie almost sells out for this game and I felt it drained your boys last year. The loss last year helped as Riley and our offense changed a lot of things moving forward. Looking forward to it.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

I have a lot of confidence in Buechele to play at least at an “above average” (6/10) level for us this year. I think that level of QB play gets us 7 or 8 regular season wins. I think if he plays at a “good” (7/10) level, then we’re looking at 8 or more like 9 regular season wins. If he plays at a “very good” (8/10) we’re looking at 10 regular season wins. I expect him to show flashes of “very good” for a drive, quarter, or maybe even a whole game through the season, but nothing close to a sustained level. I also expect him to balance that out with som “average” and “below average” showings as well. I think he ends the season with an average of 6.5/10. That seems fair and realistic to me for a true freshman.

          • Boom says:

If you got 6.5 for a season for a TRUE freshman QB, that’s off the charts. Different game all together and it doesn’t matter if he ran the same offense in HS. His HS lineman are prolly 6’2 or shorter across the line. At UT, they are 6’4 or 5′ and it will be hard for him to see over them. Yes, I know all about Brees but look at his NFL film, he takes really deep drops so he can see over the line and makes room in his passing lanes and this didn’t happen his 1st year in college. Speed of the game along with blitz packages will confuse him too.
He will be good but IMO 6.5 is lofty especially with your Non Conf games.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Keep in mind what my 6.5 means though. That’s somewhere between “above average” and “good”. The reason why I think he’ll at least be “above average” is because the system plays to his strengths. He’s a very decisive, accurate passer. If you can make a quick decision and throw an accurate ball, you’ll make some money in this system. Plus I think having Burt, A Foreman, Devin the Duv, and Johnson will help make him look even better. This is, of course, coming from the buzz he’s generated thus far. I reserve the right to readjust my expectations come Sept. 5th.

          • Boom says:

Devin & Duv need some time for chemistry much less playing the college game. Quick HS decisions are slow for a college QB. If he’s that rare QB, 6.5 would be about right. Questions I have is his durability & will he be quick to leave the pocket like Baker did last year. Will he be patient through his progressions? This is an art and it takes time. I doubt a 9th grade QB owns it against large 6A HS which is what Shane is attempting to accomplish.
I’m heavily involved in the QB position & teaching. I’m around QB coaches (xpro & college) all the time.
Why UT won last year was 100% due to the blitz packages. They knew Bake would leave the pocket early and not go through his progressions. That said, they came after him for the edges. When Bake realized he couldn’t get out of the pocket, he stepped up into the pocket where UT blitzed up the middle. It was a perfectly called defensive game. Also, we made major changes on our OL after that game.
BTW, let me caution you on bragging about 2017. OU came off a bummer of a loss in the 2008 NC game. However, we had everyone back and were picked to win it all. Injuries derailed us and we had a sub par year with a RS QB. We lost a ton of guys so you should only bank on 1 year at a time.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

I’m not referring to Shane’s HS production. I’m talking about what reports are saying he’s doing against a pretty good P5 secondary in practice. Sure, game tom is a bit different, but everything I’ve heard and saw say Shane is legit. In a perfect world he would’ve RSed like I’m hoping Sam will, but all signs are saying he is by far and away the QB1 as of now. That’s because he’s proven it against a legit collegiate secondary.

Well, sure, anything can happen between now and 2017. This is football after all lol. I was under the impression that “barring unforeseen events” was implied when referencing any future wins or losses.

    • Deake says:

This is the trend in softball. Last year coaches made the jump from recruiting Juniors in HS to Freshmen and even 8th graders. OC Batbusters are an elite program and recruited heavily. It’s a little bit crazy to me; I just have the sense that girls at that age change so dramatically. My daughter verballed to UTEP as a Sophomore and we were very late in the process. Just from a parents perspective I think the NCAA should limit verbals to juniors in HS. Too much pressure on young ladies.

Love coach Gasso though. Wiebe we could have been Sooners!
