My wife asked when the season starts a couple of days ago. I think she expected “september 3” or “beginning of september”.
Instead, I said “75 days.” She was concerned that I knew it to the day. I was concerned that she expected anything short of that.
Duke = was destroyed by the UF DL and contributed greatly to us not getting number 8. The holding on the long pass to Gresh early in the game and the total obliteration on the 4th & goal, come to mind among others.

Vacation was GREAT. Before I got sick, I posted a pic (monday news) of Lake Louise in Banff. All of the Canadian rockies are gorgeous. They have a mineral in the water (no taste or health issue) that when struck by sunlight gives it a turquoise hue.
The food poisoning was when I got home – per the song “it was my own damn fault.”

So we have 4 of the big 12’s 7 preseason AA’s…while the SEC has 32. Man, the talent in this conference has gone to sh*t.
So has the national media’s bias towards conferences.
Rainy is right….this and TV bias has more to do with it than talent levels
Particularly for preseason polls which are usually dominated by the traditional big names in the media’s mind.
This is the same group that had like 18 OU players on the 4 all big 12 teams…just saying.
That wasnt bias, it just shows how much talent gap there is between us and the rest of the big 12.
I disagree. Look at the lack of love that went Perine and Shep’s way last year. Both were easily top 5 at their positions last year, but neither ever seriously contended for their respective awards. Shep got beat out as a Biletnikof finalist to Treadwell in the SEC, despite having better stats in every category. And Perine never got mentioned once in the Heisman conversation, despite destroying Fournette’s stats in both their true Fr years in an offense that could actually spread it around.
This list has perine 2nd team RB, that seems pretty reasonable to me.

Perine was 21st in yards and 17th in TD’s last year. I agree hes a top 5 RB, but his stats didnt support that last year.
He was never going to get heisman love on an 8-5 team man, even though his freshman season was phenomenal.

Fournette didnt make the heisman ceremony. He was getting love until his team fell apart at the end of the season.
He fell off the heisman map once his team lost 3 straight. He was the favorite when his team started the season undefeated.
I was referring to the 2014 season. In that year, both OU and LSU went 8-5. Fournette went into 2015 as the preseason Heisman favorite, and the media blasted his name loud and wide. Meanwhile, no one outside of the B12 knew that Perine rushed for 1700 yds as a true freshman who didn’t even start until the season was half over.

I’m probably not going to do that. I just know that when results are skewed so favorably in one direction, there’s probably some bias there.
The NFL draft is a pretty good indicator too, and a lot of these kids getting AA honors are getting picked high in the draft too.

Well… a power conference with 4 more teams is naturally going to have more draft picks. I agree that the B12 isn’t what it once was, but that’s what happens when you lose 4 of your bigger schools.
I understand the numbers equalize a little bit when you look at averages, and not raw numbers, but its still pretty disproportionate.
OU is pretty much dragging the rest of the conference on its back, and its tough to do that without overwhelming yourself.
Well, Tennessee didn’t have any players drafted last year, so those preseason AAs may not end up meaning as much as you think they will.

They will have a really good draft next year.
But it was the same with us too. Next year, we have Perine/Mixon, Dede, Walker, Thomas, Parker, and Evans as legit and likely draft options, and Dede is the only senior of that group.
And several of those are preseason AA’s for us. As i said above, im not questioning OUR talent. Its the rest of the conference that is falling behind badly.

Like i said below, a lot of those guys are proven players, thats not bias. Sure, some of those guys are not deserving, but most of them are.
True, but there are equally deserving players in our conference that don’t get the recognition they deserve. And that’s not just in football. Look what the Big 12 has done in the CWS. They rolled over the favored sec teams. This has been a very good year for the Big 12.
There might be a couple, but not many. I have a hard time believing the upper echelon of talent between the big 12 and SEC is equal.
OU could compete with anyone in the SEC, just dont feel i could say the same about anyone else.
Baseball is a completely different animal, all you need to do is get hot at the end of the year. I mean ok state lost what, 20 or 21 regular season games?
Pure speculation, but it’s like noses. I think these might be reasonable match-ups:
Bama, LSU, Florida, greatly overrated Geogia, Aub/Tenn
OU, TCA, WV, Okie State, pre rape Baylor or even QB-less K State could match up.
Five games, 2-3 or 3-2 split.
The vols took our #1 team to OT last year. Ole miss thrashed the pokes. LSU thrashed TTU. TTU did beat an early season arky though.
TCU losing most all their playmakers and baylor rape really brings the overall talent level down a notch IMO.
Nothing in a preseason is deserved. Even Perine has not proved what he will be this year. We assume but we don’t know what his season will be like. He could easily not even be an all conference player.
Baker was not on a list anywhere last year but he proved he should be. Lets wait until week 6 to decide who is playing reward worthy football.

First of all, I have to say that that was a fantastic article, and I highly recommend that others read it. Now, that being said, I completely disagree with your conclusion. In fact, I developed a good deal of respect for Riley after reading it. As the article comes to a close, the main point it tries to convey is accountability and real responsibility, and I feel Riley took both quite seriously, as opposed to Briles who doesn’t know the meaning of either of those things.
That’s true but Briles is acting much the same way that Riley did 18 years ago. Maybe, in 18 years, Briles will see the error of his ways.
To be completely fair to Riley, the understanding of rape and conversations about consent were nearly nonexistant 18 years ago (as I understand anyway; I’m only 23, so I might be ignorant here). While we see what he did as terrible by today’s standards, back then they weren’t really all that unusual. Briles, on the other hand, has absolutely no excuse. He was fully aware of the results of his actions, or should have been, and either way chose to do them anyway.
Drew, Good insight. As someone who has been around for a long time, I agree that it is not apples to apples. Understanding, sensitivity, and media have all helped shape the change.
But, reality is that some people are more moral than others, from the start. Others have to learn, as it is not as natural to them.

Just to set some part of the record for you: I was a college freshman in September of 1979. Consent and sexual assault along with drug and alcohol education were absolutely part of freshman orientation way back in those dark ages. And no one thought it was weird or outre.
Those who claim that these concerns are new or that young men were not being taught how to behave or what the boundaries are are lying sacks of sh*t who you should look upon properly as, in all liklihood, setting up excuses for themselves.
The rules have never been ambiguous or hard to understand.
The world has come a long way in its view of sexual assault. I found it quite impressive that Riley reached out. It doesn’t appear he asked her what she would say about him or even tried to sanitize it. Good on him.
That was brutal to read. I couldn’t imagine what that poor girl must have felt like and gone through. That’s heartbreaking.
Saw her story about two weeks ago. This WHOLE set of coaches covering up is like sedimentary rock with layers and years being discovered.

This is an ugly blot than can’t be cleaned. We won’t begin to wipe this out until we start to respect women in the work place and in every day life. Lack of respect, to anyone, will make it easy to dismiss and discount their value, make it easy to rape someone; after all, they’re nothing.

I really consider A&M the triple A team for OU. When players aren’t quite ready we send them down to get some experience and call them up when they are ready for the big leagues.
And I believe they are happy to have some classy guys to help scrub the “Johnny (jerk) Football” stench off of their team.
