Good morning Metz. I have a lunch meeting lined up in Canton. Maybe I can summon the OP during this meeting.

Wondering what others feel about the future of Hughes. Does he continue or get replaced?

    • Sooner Ray says:

      I’m not impressed.

      • BleedCrimson says:

I am not either. Third year (I believe), started season ranked high and can not get out of the gates. Finished the regular season fairly strong, but lay major egg in XII championship game.

    • Matt S. says:

I say there’s a 40% chance he’s let go. I think they’ll give him 1 more year simply because it’s a young team that started to come together toward the end of the season. That’s my best guess.

    • John Garner says:

Given the amazing the performance of other OU coaches, I think much will depend on how the team does in the B12-2 tournament. My feeling is that he has underperformed.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I’d almost guarantee he gets another year.

      • BleedCrimson says:

Kind of what I was thinking, starting next season it will be “his” guys on the field. No excuses.

  • Framoka says:

Good morning from the east coast. TCU will exceed expectations. Briles will survive filling his teams with known criminals. The BIG12 will not expand and the LHN and the 14 people who watch it will survive. Texas sucks. That is all.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Hadn’t spent much time thinking about divisions, if the Big XII expanded, but, from Stewart Mandel, in the story above…

Hi Stewart. Let’s suppose that the Big 12 does add two teams. Aren’t we overlooking the fact that it would probably have to put Texas and OU in opposite divisions to balance out the conference? How would you create the divisions in a hypothetical 12-team Big 12 conference?

    — James G., Gilroy, CA

Jeez, there’s next year’s Big 12 existential crisis. Should the conference put both in the same division, thus preserving the rivalry but in doing so, risk potential long-term imbalance? Or put them in opposite divisions, thus requiring permanent crossover opponents and risking a conference title game rematch?

The Big Ten went through this a few years ago, initially separating Ohio State and Michigan in its confusing and universally panned setup. Now they’re back together in the more straightforward East and West divisions, and while the East is indisputably tougher than the West, the earth is still spinning on its axis.

The problem here is, if you group the teams along the same lines as the Big 12’s old North and South Divisions then the potential imbalance could put the Big Ten’s or SEC’s to shame. Can you imagine if OU, Oklahoma State, Texas, TCU and Baylor are all in one division while Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and two current Group of 5s are in the other?

    Yikes!

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Do like the SEC and allow one cross division team to be your rival and play every year.

    • Bob Edwards says:

And how is that different than what we had before. Remember when we had OU, Texas, and TT under Leach, plus a decent OSU team under Gundy in the south.

      • Dick Bump says:

        Sounds familiar.

      • Rick says:

From year to year, teams will be a little up or a little down. Texas hasn’t shown much for several years. They continue to recruit well, but don’t produce. It doesn’t matter if you’re North/South, East/West or sideways, at times there will be some disparity. One solution with a 12 team conference is to continue the round robin play and rotate the schedules playing 9 conference games leaving 2 games rotating every other year. Top 2 teams play for the championship, use your head to head, etc. and etc. for tie breakers. I don’t see more than the obvious problems. How many times is the SEC championship actually played during the championship game, not many.

        • Bob Edwards says:

That’s why hand wringing over imbalance is wasted. No matter how you start it, unless you have some plan to rebalance every X number of years you will have periods where there is a significant imbalance. Then you have the problem have having to cut up rivalries in order to balance. See NU-OU.

          • Birddawg says:

            Hey Bob,
I don’t think we need to worry about staying in this conference…
We have to leave if we can’t find schools that can add value enough to make more $. The gap between big12 and others $ just got larger with the new Big10 deal. I don’t think there is much choice but to leave. When do you think that could realistically happen?

          • Bob Edwards says:

It depends a lot on the details of the GOR. As I understand it, it only applies to home games, meaning the new conference would get our conference away games. Given the money the SEC and B1G are getting that could be worth enough to make up for the loss of revenue we lose from the B12. We also get our tier 3 game, which Texas has set a precedent for using a conference game for that as well.
In the end it breaks down to whether we can find away to replace the lost income with enough certainty that our leadership is willing to make the jump.
A lot of that depends on the fine details of the GOR and what the lawyers think will work.
It does appear that Boren has some play in mind. He has been very vocal which is odd given he was told earlier to be quiet. However, his track record doesn’t suggest a good deal of confidence in whatever his plan is.

          • cush creekmont says:

The taint of political “talk and bluster” still clings to Boren. If he has a plan with an end game, he will have to act and not just threaten. I am all for him doing so, but I am in the “believe it when I see it” camp.

          • Birddawg says:

I have a copy of the full GOR if you want to check it out.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I work for a defense contractor. I have to read crap like that for a living sometimes. So no, not unless I am getting paid to read it.

          • Birddawg says:

            Haha okay..
Its really only 2 pages long with maybe a page of content.
            Reading legalese is borrring

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, the problem is, unless you are a lawyer you probably don’t know what it all means. There may also be a much larger document that they signed and the public available one is just a summary.

          • cush creekmont says:

Boring, but malleable (twistable may be better). “Creative interpretation” is all that is needed to weaken it.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

The problem with your assessment is that you would be losing half your revenue, ie, all the money from your home games. The payout from the new conference would have to be at least twice what we making now to break even.

          • Bob Edwards says:

And right now the B1G is looking at $40 mil/per year vs the $25 mil the B12 is paying. They still have some of their rights to negotiate for so that number could increase. We are getting pretty close.

          • cush creekmont says:

Note what Bob said about texsa “creativity” in having 1 game on its network – OU could do the same – 6 road, 1 home, thus 5/12 of revenue. AND THAT ASSUMES the FULL GOR payment rather than the very likely “settlement” value.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Send TCU and Baylor to the North. Keep OU and Texas in the South. Spilt the newbies, and send either KU or KSU to the South.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

That was a good article written about TCU and like the author, I think they will have a solid year. I just think getting them early in the year will help our chances against their offense that has to replace a lot.

My first OU game I went to was the 2007 Big 12 Championship Game vs Missouri in San Antonio. My second OU game and first at Memorial Stadium was in 2008 vs Texas Tech. Being from Houston, it’s tough to be at all the games so I make sure to go to at least one game a year. 2 years ago it was the record breaking Kansas game, last year was the last second TCU game and this year will be the first game of the season here in Houston… from my past games I’ve attended I think it’s safe to say we’re in for a treat! What’s your most memorable OU game that you’ll never forget?

    • cheezyq says:

OU/Mizzou 2008 at Arrowhead in KC. The stupid plane and banner flying overhead paid for by Texas fans/alums. Unbelievably cold, and sitting right where the OU/Mizzou fans merge together (though we ended up sitting with more Mizzou fans than OU fans).
OU goes up 24-7 and is about to score again. Mizzou fan one row down and a couple of seats over is apparently tired of us chanting Boomer/Sooner and overall enjoying the butt-kicking (we kept it light because my 9-year old son was with us). So the Mizzou fan leans over and asks what the UT/OU score was earlier in the year. I said, “I can’t remember, I’m having too much fun watching OU kick Mizzou’s ass right now.”

Favorite non-OU game moment: I was at a KC Chiefs game the day after OU beat Mizzou in 2006 (26-10 if I recall correctly). I’m not a Chiefs fan, but I enjoy going to NFL games and got some good tix. I was wearing OU jersey and at halftime I’m walking up to the concessions and a Mizzou fan (in Chiefs gear, of course) gives me a little crap about being an OU fan – nothing rude or anything, just joking around with me.
As I’m standing in line, I’m holding a beer, and two beautiful women come up to me and start raving about me having the OU jersey on. They proceed to tell me that they’re former OU cheerleaders, etc. We chat for a few minutes, we exchange hugs, get pictures with each other…then we clink our beers, Boomer Sooner, then they continue on.
The Mizzou fan that was joking with me earlier watched this whole thing go down, and says to me, “Um, dude…can I be a Sooner fan too?” LOL

OU/Nebraska 1983. The game Spencer made the 5 yard TD dive that was on the ESPN intro for years. We were big underdogs and lost 28-21, had first & goal at the 5 in the closing minutes but a motion penalty set us back to the 10 and we never got in. It rained the entire game and I had the greatest time cuddling up with my hot date.

OU/Syracuse 1997. It was like watching football on the surface of the sun, but seeing McNabb throw-up on the field before plays and line up behind his guard was worth it. Ended up eating at a table next to him and his parents after the game. They were absolutely first class.

OU/TT 2008. Two words: jump around.

OU/Washington 1985. Unhorsemanlike conduct penalty kills what little momentum we could muster.

OU/Colorado 1993. Sooner Schooner rolls over. Man, everything about that day and that game was weird. It just didn’t feel “right” all day, and ended up being even worse. They even played the rest of the game with a big gash in the artificial turf.

OU/USC 1981. Coleseum, number 1 vs number 2. We had 3rd & 4 in our last possession, option right with plenty of room and slip making the cut. Punt to USC and they drive to score with 3 seconds left, winning 28-24. I went to the Comedy Store that night, to see OU grad Argus Hamilton host, and his entire comedy routine was about how we gave away the natty.

OU/Michigan 1972. My first Orange Bowl.

Briles will probably be the HC at a SEC school tomorrow, where he really fits with the business plan.

No power 5 team will want his stink for awhile.
His love of the state of Texas is deep.
      I bet this year off.
Then, some North Texas/SMU/Rice will hire him for a couple of years

      • Rick says:

I’m not sure that Briles involvement even begins to touch the outrageousness of Butch at UT. I’m inclined to believe he would fit into the SEC somewhere. Look what he did with the doormat at Baylor. Imagine what he could do at Vandy.

        • Birddawg says:

Him to SEC would be pretty cool. His system would undoubtedly change schemes over there.
But the dude has never left Texas. Ever. (away games don’t count)

        • DrewChubbs says:

I don’t think Vandy would be the school to sell out like that. I could be wrong, but they don’t seem to really mind being the SEC doormat…especially since their graduates are heads and shoulders above the rest of the conference, academically speaking.

BU will have to pay up big to get anyone to come in. There still may some NCAA or 12-2 sanctions against BU.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, they may get Penn Stated. Funny thing is Penn State didn’t actually break any NCAA rules. Quite a few laws, but no NCAA rules and the NCAA slapped them anyway.

    • Birddawg says:

      Same jump Briles made.
I like that over them taking LR

    • Rick says:

I would think tulsa’s coach might be considered. Maybe even OUr OC.

      • MoJoOkie says:

I don’t think LR is that dumb. Baylor will have a certain smell for a couple of years I’d say.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Baylor hires one of two types of coaches. Either an established coach probably near the end of his career with a reputation for running a clean program or a young gun who is willing to overlook the problems for a chance to be a head coach. Neither one seems to be LR.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      No way

    • Birddawg says:

      Mike Singletary

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Don’t you think the NCAA has to get involved now? I’m not sure many coaches/recruits would want to touch Baylor at this point.

    • Rick says:

Recent history shows some teams can bounce back pretty fast after a firing, (Arky comes to mind). I’m not saying Baylor could be able to, but they don’t have a cash flow problem, they have an excellent roster and a new Stadium. If there is a setup for an immediate turn around Baylor could be the place. Flash a potent paycheck and someone will bet their career on it.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

I think the issue will be sanctions from the NCAA or not knowing exactly what will happen. I would hope the NCAA won’t take these particular allegations and cover up lightly. Money is one thing, but this ruined peoples lives.

      • Bob Edwards says:

A lot will depend on whether the NCAA appears to be getting involved. Looming sanctions of the Penn State variety will scare off a lot of guys. Sure someone will take the check, but it could be a career ender once the sanctions hit and Baylor falls into the toilet. As much as you think someone would get credit for taking over an impossible situation, they often don’t.

        • Rick says:

The major difference I can see about the Baylor situation vs. the PSU situation is, it seems Baylor is cleaning their house. You are probably right, I just don’t see Baylor getting sanctioned like PSU did.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

I don’t see how they can let Baylor off lightly, this was years of abuse and cover up.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, Dave Bliss also says hi. This is not the first thing Baylor has been involved in that stank.

      • jimintexas says:

I agree to a point. But I don’t think Arky is a good example. Title IX issues not about to rain on Arky

      • cush creekmont says:

There is still a good chance the NCAA does something to prove they are involved in the greater university well-being. Also for a prospective new coach, the uncertainty of sanctions and as JiminTexsa mentioned, Title IX lawsuits will have to impact the decision to take a BU offer.

      Petrino.
He’d fit in just fine in Waco.

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

Poor Baylor, I hope they saved the tarp.

  • David Luc says:

Starr’s defense being that he wasn’t informed of the situation is a very clumsy attempt at playing the plausible denial card, amateurish really. As the Captain of the ship he is responsible for knowing the situation, not simply acting on knowledge that is forwarded or passed along to him. That is the unique nature of responsibility – you can and must delegate it, but you never surrender any portion of it.
    Off my soapbox now.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Never said he didn’t need fired, just that they most likely kept him out of the loop intentionally

      • David Luc says:

I don’t know how ‘they’ could have kept him out of the loop without having his approval to do so, either tacit or otherwise.

        • AgedBill says:

If Starr had instituted the Title IX requirements like was supposed to, that group would have notified him. Either way, he botched his responsibilities.

  • KJ1123 says:

Baylor COULD come for Linc next year….that would suck.

  • Rick says:

    Imagine the Briles book deal.

    • Oscar says:

Maybe there IS some integrity somewhere at Baylor after all.

      • BoomCity89 says:

Or there’s more news to be released soon ha.

      • jimintexas says:

Na, I don’t think so. I think they spent some time trying to determine if they could work around it and the national pressure was too unrelenting.

  • Kelsta says:

The Americans is an excellent series. It always surprises me how certain shows take off and others never seem to really get traction. In my circle of friends, family, and coworkers, we often talk about different shows. Still haven’t talked to anyone who watches The Americans.

    • MoJoOkie says:

Waving hand in the air. Great show.

    • soonerjunky says:

It’s a solid show. Maybe a little too slow for most people.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Hey.

Okay, now you’ve talked to someone who watches 🙂

    • Oscar says:

Very good show. The character exposition has been interesting because of the double life. The writers have been good at showing us the “real” people and the undercover personalities. It has been intriguing and not rah rah USA. The only unbelievable part for me has been the ease and quickness of getting into and out of disguise, and where do they do it??? That takes a lot of painstaking time.

    • MoJoOkie says:

Holy crap (edited before posting)! That’s fairly disgusting.

    • cush creekmont says:

Did said “meetings” include the now “interim” head coach?

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

Time will tell I guess, hard to think nobody other than Briles ever knew anything about this. It did say coaches and staff, so it was more than just ole Arty.

        • cush creekmont says:

More of the P-H report will leak even if it is not released. At that point, any specific names or titles mentioned will have to be fired. The law suits by the victims will be epic and may bring more specific events to light.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

This whole thing is almost unbelievable…

          • Jed says:

Might have to dismiss their governing board and have the state appoint a magistrate to run the place until such time as its deemed current ownership can abide by state and federal law. Clearly that can not be said today.

I’m not a cop, but I play one on the practice field.

      • Jed says:

Apparently not in Waco. Quite clearly, there aren’t even pretend cops in Waco.

  • cush creekmont says:

With the breaking news of today, it makes this OU alum VERY pleased to have a coach, an AD, and a president with principles.
