If the girls are lying and Mr. Starr did not know anything, then he is incompetent. Different than coaches, University Presidents can’t usually consider a great legacy being “we won a lot of games and built a pretty stadium. I doubt Starr can recover from this, reputation wise

        • SamSooner says:

When you put it like that it applies a different perspective. No matter what, he should have known something.

    • jimintexas says:

If the rumors are true, Texsa dodged a bullet when Art thought his record did not require him sending them a resume. What may make a difference is how the HS coaches, who have been his allies, respond to all of this.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I said this late last night and I will repost it here.

Many schools that started off as religious schools have turned into secular institutions. Most of the Ivy League schools started off as seminaries but have little if any religious affiliation today. For instance most people don’t know that Tulsa University is actually associated with one of the Presbyterian denominations.

Baylor appears to be in that category.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

I think the part that angers me the most about this is one of the ladies went to the team chaplain and told them what happened. The fact that nothing happened afterward is very disheartening.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Oh, I agree. It’s a good example of what happens when any organization or individual loses track of their true mission. When football becomes bigger than your god it becomes your god.

          • Stephen Dale says:

            well put.

          • Jed says:

One of the many reasons civilized countries ditched ecclesiastical law hundreds of years ago. That biblical injunction to render unto Caesar is wise indeed. Churches may have an important role to play in healing victim and perp. They have none in a proper investigation or prosecution and almost invariably end up sullying themselves when they shoulder in.

          • SamSooner says:

            Jed, good morning. Well said.

          • SamSooner says:

Morning, Lincoln. It appears Baylor has lost its “why?”

Yep, along with a lot of other things.

          • Stephen Dale says:

I attend a church that has no less than 20 students at Baylor. I was speaking to a friend this last Sunday and he started telling me about exited that his daughter was going to Baylor. Conversation was over. I had nothing to say. I am confident that no one will ask what I think about it, because they do not want to talk about. And if asked, I would remind them they do not want me to talk about it

Funny story, (at least I thought so),is I attend a church that has a couple of services of about 700-900 each. I go to the early service and the head of the Deacons is a Petroleum Engineer graduate from OU. There were some pre-service things we both were there for, and there were only about 15 people are so, including the pastor, who has two daughters at Baylor, in the auditorium. After the the OU Baylor game this last year the deacon saw me come in and yelled Boomer, which I responded with Sooner about 3 times. The pastor did not laugh. So, I doubt that anyone would be asking him or me about our thoughts.

Constant things in life, when you live in Texsa:

Now we yell Boomer Sooner all the time to each other, much to the dismay of the leaders of the church who are all OSU alumni or fans. Thankfully we have been beating osu for pretty much my whole life, which makes it much easier to live around these people.

    • Jed says:

That Baylor behaves/behaved in a scummy way is neither news nor especially surprising. It’s more about arrogance than anything else. They simply feel that they are somehow exempt from the rules that govern the rest of society. The ‘why?’ Would be speculation and probably inflammatory, so I’ll leave that to others. Suffice to say that a bit of humility, and obedience to the common law would have prevented this whole mess. As well as saving many people a lot of misery.

    • Mike Reed says:

Art Briles, Ken Starr and BU need to get gut punched and hung out to dry. When you sell your soul to the devil to win a football game instead of protecting vulnerable women, weeping and nashing of teeth should be your reward.

Read that earlier this morning and to me it’s spot on. The QB coach for my son told him on his first session, you’re technique & footwork is good for your age. HOWEVER, the key to being a good/great athlete is to listen, body language, and confidence. There was more to this but like the article, the athlete has to take responsibility on/off the field.

        • cush creekmont says:

Briles and Starr appear to merit the full PSU penalty – perhaps more with an extension to a life-time ban just to make sure another immoral institution does not place sports above protecting victims.

        • Boom says:

What gets me is Starr is the same guy who wanted to impeach Clinton. I’m no Clinton fan but he was a bulldog in his pursuit. However, I wish there was a young Starr going after Baylor to make a name.

          • hOUligan says:

The BU thing is so disgusting that it has already caused me to re-taste my oatmeal more than once. I know that it must be kept in the public’s mind until something is done, but I was hoping for some OP inspired diversion.

Funny but true story of Lubbock and Hwy 87. I was going towards Slaton on a windy day and “bang”, branches went everywhere. I hit a blowing big tumbleweed. It tore up my company car’s plastic bumper. I had to call my company to tell them which is the funny part. I’m calling New York and the gal i talked to was 100% Jersey. She said, YOU HIT WHAT? Told her again and this lasted for 5 minutes as she didn’t understand or even know what a tumbleweed was much less know how to write up the report. My hick accent saying – hit a tumbleweed – her jersey accent telling me to talk english. funny.

I wouldn’t make too big a deal out of the pitcher catching that line drive. I did the same thing once, only difference is I didn’t catch the ball, it was a base hit and I had to wipe left handed for about four weeks, but other than that it was pretty much just like that.

  • Scott says:

ESPN first take is roasting Baylor and Art Briles aka The Devil.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I wonder how much money OU could make if they followed the NBA with sponsors on the jerseys.

    • Unofficial Longhorn says:

It’s funny you say that, because I was waiting for the OP on the Texas board to ask a similar question. If you look at the Sixers’ Stubhub ad deal, the jersey is just a small path on the upper left corner of the jersey. I believe they’ll make about $3.5M per year off of that and probably some other ad placements that have nothing to do with the uni. But think how much it would profit universities, especially BigXII schools that have an issue with TV money, to create revenue by adding a patch similar in size to the BigXII patch on the jersey and on the pants too if necessary. I think it could be huge for college sports.

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

Teams should only be able to do this if they agree on a conference network. Not trying to be mean I just hate what Texas is doing to this conference.

        • Oscar says:

          Now at the Cotton Bowl.

        • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Why do you think it would be contingent on a conference network?

          • Boom says:

conf network has nothing to do with it. If this type of marketing is approved, I want us to have a sponsor like Mac Trucks or something tough. : )

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

I know that it won’t. I just don’t want the greedy Longhorns to be able to make any more money.

LOLOL. Assuming you are a male, go walk into a sandwich shop one night this weekend and punch another male in the face and break multiple bones in his face and let me know how that turns out for you in the judicial system

          • j l says:

If the other male assaults you 1st, and you throw only a single punch, no charges will be filed.

          • soonerguy421 says:

I have a feeling that the video will show her “assault” hurt about as much as a marshmallow being thrown at your face

          • j l says:

We are talking legality here though. A slap is the same as a punch when it comes to assault.

Hell, someone just lunging at you is actually assault by the letter of the law.

          • soonerguy421 says:

Well, if you want to talk legality, then the chances of causing “great bodily harm” (which will lead to additional, more severe charges) to another individual are much higher from a punch than from a slap or lunge. So, no, they are not the same thing at all.

          • j l says:

Then please explain why he wasnt charged with assault, or assault and battery, or aggravated assault and battery, as the single punch he threw that did damage could have fallen under?

Just so you know, here is oklahoma’s legal definition of assault, which she committed.

“Assault occurs when a person threatens or attempts to cause physical harm to another person. (Okla. Stat. Ann. Tit. 21, Β§641.) The threat must involve physical action like drawing a fist or charging toward a victim. Words alone are not enough.”

She shoved and slapped him, thats 2 assaults. He lunged at her and punched her, also 2 assaults…

Striking a person with a fist constitutes battery, which he did.

Causing physical harm by battery is aggravated assault and battery, which he did.

Yet wasnt charged with any of them…hmm

          • SamSooner says:

Well, this has nothing to do with Joe but I’ll bite. Do we deny anyone public access to public venues when they’ve committed a crime?

Joe was punished by Bob and the OU. If that wasn’t enough for you, create a website to fire Joe.

          • soonerguy421 says:

No, he could have sat in the stands, but going on the court as a member of the “TEAM” was over the line, in my opinion, and makes his punishment seem pretty miniscule

          • SamSooner says:

What do you want: a medal or a chest to pin it on?

I’m sorry you don’t believe Joe’s punishment was enough. Fix it, will ya? But don’t stop there: go clean up all of the wrongs and make them right.

          • soonerguy421 says:

So if you don’t agree with a decision that the “higher-ups” from our university make, then you should just sit back and say nothing bc you can’t change it?? Got it.

          • SamSooner says:

Do whatever you want to do that gives you satisfaction. Just be consistent; there are a lot of things that need to be corrected. Don’t fix the one that lowers your def-con and stop. Pick up the banner for other hot topics. There are a lot of them.

          • soonerguy421 says:

you realize this is a website about OU football?? I’m not going to come on here and tell you my opinion on other social problems like transgender bathroom laws bc this isn’t the forum…

          • SamSooner says:

You see, that’s your problem. The world is evolving and you won’t let yourself grow. What decade were you born in, if I may ask?

          • soonerguy421 says:

            wait, what’s my problem exactly?
I don’t come on an OU football website and rant about things that have nothing to do with our team/program/university?

          • hOUligan says:

            …………

          • Boom says:

Look bro, don’t know if you can be pleased on this topic but here is my 2 cents on the court thing. Mixon got in a heck’va lot of trouble when he did this and wasn’t a part of any other activity.

          • soonerguy421 says:

Would also be willing to bet that this “assault” that occurred in Wisconsin didn’t cause near the amount of bodily damage that Joe’s punch to a female half his size did.

          • Slim Sooner says:

Just wondering if you or anybody ever saw any definitive evidence of bodily damage to her face since she disappeared like road kill at a buzzard convention. But, Joe should’ve walked away, no doubt. How exactly did you want him punished for the incident?

          • soonerguy421 says:

I love the Sooners through and through, but I do not want Joe on our team and cannot bring myself to cheer for him

          • ouwooferman says:

did you cheer for Dusty or Broyles? Frank Shannon gets your pass? Charles Thompson was your hero?

          • soonerguy421 says:

I wasn’t old enough to have watched Thompson.
Wasn’t a Dusty fan, but his punishment was much harsher as he was expelled and also went to rehab I believe.
I have heard differing reports on the Shannon situation, so I am not sure exactly what to believe, but if it’s true, then I would be disapppointed that I ever cheered for him.
AND dragging Broyles into this situation is laughable, he “stole” gas (aka was probably given that gas card by a booster)

          • ouwooferman says:

One of the great things about the great OU coaches is they realize that these are Kids growing into men. They allowed second chances for too many to be named. You seem to be so focused on Mixon and may feel this is equivalent to domestic assault. A bar fight that got started by a racial slur does not pass your mustard. Surly you must realize that slurs are and can only be felt by those targeted. We witnessed the WHOLE OU team protest the SAE event. You can not separate the emotion of what happened, age and the individuals skills at dealing with these issued. He made a big mistake, has kept his nose clean, and so far has lived up to Stoop’s expectations.

I can not place myself in his place but this day and age of “black lives matter” etc should provide a small insight to how volatilize a moment can become. He just turned 18.

          • SamSooner says:

Salute to you, sir. Well said and well thought out.

          • ouwooferman says:

thanks. not an easy topic regardless of discussion

          • SamSooner says:

He must be Jenny Carlson’s sock puppet. I mean, I get it. I have two daughters and a wife. I’m against violence against women and violence against anyone. Unlike this guy, I’m not targeting Joe.

          • soonerguy421 says:

β€œThe team was divided at that point, and we all just sat down and were like, β€˜We have to fix this thing,’” said wide receiver Sterling Shepard.
Yep, sounds like the whole team agreed

          • ouwooferman says:

            Wow. I am done.

          • SamSooner says:

He hasn’t pushed all of the buttons, apparently.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Probably shouldn’t say through and through then. Maybe through some, around one and through the others.

          • soonerguy421 says:

Why? Bc I don’t agree with the actions of one player on our team?
Does that mean Baylor fans who weren’t Oakman fans couldn’t be Baylor fans “through and through”?

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

It was a one time action and paid his dues according to the law and to the University. Not sure what else you want from the young man. He was given a second chance and has done well since. I sure am glad my Father in Heaven isn’t as judgmental as you. Now can we please move on to something else? Sick and tired of reliving this day after day.

          • soonerguy421 says:

So why does a student get expelled for exercising his free speech when the law doesn’t call for that? Were those young men not deserving of a second chance?

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Again, not my decision to make. I forgive that young man as well and hope they both lived from their mistakes and become great men.

          • soonerguy421 says:

fair enough. I appreciate your ability to have civil discourse, but find it laughable that some of our fans were ready to expel those students immediately bc Eric Striker said so, but they are going out and buying Mixon posters and jerseys after what he did

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

I’m just a big advocate of second chances. We are all human and have our own opinions and I respect that.

          • hOUligan says:

Here here …. motion to move on to other business seconded … do we have a 3rd?

          • Slim Sooner says:

Ok. That is totally your right to your opinion. Me, I love the Sooners to the bone. I believe in second chances, forgiveness, taking your punishment like a man while sticking around to do it, and Bob Stoops sense of justice for his players. I’m glad Joe Mixon is still on our team and will cheer loudly for every young man wearing Crimson and Cream. Sorry I doubted you were a sooner guy.

          • soonerguy421 says:

no hard feelings, you’re entitled to your opinion just as much as I am, and I respect your civility/class to understand a difference of opinions doesn’t mean I’m not a “fan”

          • MoJoOkie says:

You seem very forgiving and yet condemning. Somewhat conflicted?

          • SamSooner says:

            MoJo, you nailed it.

          • MoJoOkie says:

            Gracias Sam.

          • soonerguy421 says:

I am extremely sorry to hear that has happened to you in the past, as that is an extremely disgusting act, but saying a word that hurts someone’s feelings just does not stack up to throwing a punch that break multiple facial bones in a court of law

          • SamSooner says:

Then why are you being empathetic about what was said to me if you really don’t believe that it caused me any harm?

          • soonerguy421 says:

            re-read my post.
I’m sure it caused you emotional distress, but that isn’t going to hold up the same as a video of you knocking someone out with a right hook in court

          • SamSooner says:

Why would I re-read your post? Did you make some edits?

“Emotonial distress”: don’t be so patronizing.

          • soonerguy421 says:

ahhh the good ol spelling police card, nice.
And you should re-read my post bc I never said it didn’t cause you any harm…

          • SamSooner says:

You know the relief you get when it’s revealed that you’re not the only one in class that’s confused, your post did it for me.

          • Slim Sooner says:

Thanks, Sam. At my age I’m in a constant state of confusion, just never about being a SOONER. LOL!!

          • SamSooner says:

You will always have your sanity if that’s a question on the questionnaire.

          • ouwooferman says:

          • hOUligan says:

In his/her/gender neutral defense … checked the profile/post history and has some pro-OU comments…recruiting input… a questionable comment about “”women’s sports….. zzzzzzz”” so … in fairness … think there is just a major dif in opinion about Joe’s punishment. Maybe wrong here but I like to stay open and positive.

          • ouwooferman says:

            Ok, Tshirt fan at best.

          • soonerguy421 says:

Actually, I am an alumni season ticket holder/OU grad who has two parents who also graduated from OU that bleeds crimson and cream and has for my entire life. Also, I stand by my statement that women’s sports put me to sleep. I think it’s great that women enjoy playing sports, but I will never watch it for my own personal entertainment

          • ouwooferman says:

            answer my post below.

          • hOUligan says:

You left out booster/donor so my opinion is ‘right’. You believe that David Boren, Joe Castiglione, Bob Stoops are dumbasses who did not give this incident enough thought and did not consult w/ you. Therefore they made the wrong decision. Got it.

          • soonerguy421 says:

Yeah, I have clearly stated that I don’t agree with the decision to keep Joe on the team… Is there a problem with that?

          • SamSooner says:

They should have checked with him first, I suppose. Good one, hOUligan.

          • diablodejalisco says:

have you ever been out of oklahoma?

          • Cav66 says:

Could be someone who just has strong negative feelings on the subject. Given the nature of the story that led to the discussion, perhaps he could be a slightly butthurt formerpresent SAE member? Just speculating.

          • MoJoOkie says:

You kidding? He/she is the biggest donor and goes to all the home and away games since …

        • Shelby is a Patriot says:

He was attacked by her and reacted. It’s not like he held her on the grounded and pounded on her. Women have just as much of a responsibility to not attack men as the other way around. If someone attacked me, male or female, my first reaction would be to defend myself, as well. He hit her, realized his mistake (though, really, he had every right to defend himself) and ran out crying.
If the girl hadn’t attacked him and he’d punched her, or had beaten on her, I’m sure he wouldn’t be on the team. But that is not the case.

          • soonerguy421 says:

If you actually believe that Joe Mixon felt so threatened by a girl who is half his size drunkenly slapping him once that he needed to throw a right hook so hard that he broke multiple bones in her face, then idk what to tell you besides to take the crimson-colored glasses off.
If he needed to get physical with her, then he simply could have bear-hugged her and the situation would’ve been defused with how strong/big Joe is.

          • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Lots of people would have reacted the same way, myself included. It doesn’t matter whether or not he felt “threatened.” She had no right to attack him or touch him in anyway and he reacted to that. The court saw that, as well. Mixon, in my opinion, served too harsh of a punishment considering he was defending himself and did not break any laws.
Any girl who thinks she can attack a guy and get away without being harmed is an idiot.

        • Malicong says:

It wasn’t just one semester away from football, it was an entire season no being able to be a part of anything related to the team, one-year suspended sentence, 100 hours of community service, and had to go through counseling. He also was placed on strict probation by Stoops and would have been kicked if he did anything wrong.
Even if you view his punishment as light, it is not the same as what is going on in Waco. He didn’t sexually assault anyone and the OU staff didn’t try to cover anything up.

          • soonerguy421 says:

Joe was suspended from the team for the Fall semester while still being allowed to remain in school and was allowed to re-join the team for the Spring semester, so that means his punishment from the university was EXACTLY one semester away from football, nothing more and nothing less! What the Oklahoma judicial system did to punish Joe has nothing to do with our university’s punishment.

I just find it laughable that some people on here want to act like Boren and Co. were right to IMMEDIATELY expel and publicly slander those SAE youngsters while kicking all of their friends off campus for good for singing an offensive song, a non-criminal act, while acting like Joe deserved a second chance and to simply be suspended from the team for a semester after doing what he did, a criminal act (see the one-year suspended sentence, 100 hours of community service, counseling, bodily harm, etc.), but I guess some people just cannot bring themselves to blame our football program for anything.

Also, just wait for the Mixon video to be released and THEN we will see how the rest of the country feels about the punishment our coaching staff/administration handed out. It’s gonna be ugly and embarassing

    • soonerguy421 says:

those of y’all who are saying I can’t be a “real” sooner fan (most of whom probably didn’t attend OU for a single day) bc I don’t agree with Joe’s punishment are laughable and are undoubtedly the fans who would be making excuses for our administration/coaches if we had a Baylor situation on our hands

      • ouwooferman says:

OU Has been in a Baylor situation. Barry Switzer, charles thompson……. and As and OU grad I could not stand the reflection on my home state, the university and agreed we need to change the culture.

        • soonerguy421 says:

Valid point. But when this video gets out of Joe doing what he did, I have a feeling that a lot of OU grads are going to be embarrassed about the way our university handled this situation. Especially bc a lot of people feel that the only reason Joe is still on campus is bc of his superior athletic abilities (I think a “normal” student would’ve been punished much more severely)

          • Drew says:

I think a “normal” student wouldn’t have even gotten a byline in the local newspaper for doing the exact same thing. An underage, drunk girl with an existing warrant out for her arrest targets a student before dawn of his 18th birthday, throws racial slurs, spits on him (legal assault), slaps him (legal assault), so the kid hit her. The only reason this is a “story” is b/c he’s a star athlete.

      • Malicong says:

I don’t speak for everyone, but that is not true for me. If OU had a problem with continual sexual assault from the athletic program, I would fully support any measures including gutting the coaching staff and admin.

  • SamSooner says:

Is it within the power of the Big XII commissioner to tell Baylor to get this cleaned up or pack it bags. I’m sure Baylor is violating some kind of conference conduct bylaws.

    • Rick says:

Barry could probably offer some insight on what it’s like when this sort of stuff goes on. He didn’t have multiple sexual assault charges floating, but lots of criminal activity going on. Opponents referred to us as the “Gooners”. It bred his famous, “it’s no fun anymore” quote. The difference is, I don’t think Barry condoned or tried to cover up any of his players faults. I hate, hate, hate being cynical, but I’m not so sure about Briles.

      • SamSooner says:

I think Briles let it happened and thought he’d not be held accountable. Either that or he’s just doesn’t care.

  • SamSooner says:

OTL was reporting on Baylor again today.

    • ouwooferman says:

I am looking forward to them calling the NCAA for comment.

    • SooperDave says:

      lol

      • SamSooner says:

They are going to be in the news for a while. It will be interesting to see if the media attacks Briles the way they attacked Mixon during the CFP.

      • cush creekmont says:

Hey, it takes commitment for a program to cover up both rape and murder. It’s a good thing that they didn’t over-text a recruit or something truly abhorrent to the NCAA or they might get in trouble /sssssssssssss.
