Sooners News Daily 5.16.16

FOOTBALL (FREE)

Alex Ross apparently headed to Missouri, which doesn’t particularly strike me as a great fit (in Heupel’s offense) but best of luck to him regardless.

I bet you’ll never guess which P5 conference he’s referring to.

OTHER

Receiving a national seed wasn’t necessarily a surprise, but good news nonetheless. Sooners will now host both a regional and (assuming they win the former) a super regional in Norman before hopefully heading to OKC for the WCWS.

    First, Boomer.

Boomer Sooner, and good morning, everyone! I’m pretty excited, because I just got a new job in Washington (state) that is what I have been wanting to do and is a very nice $$$ raise for me. BOOMER!!

Also, those ElevenWarriors commentators seem to think OU is going to get crushed by an OSU team returning 7 or 8 starters…

    • metzker says:

      SOONER!!!!!!!!

    • J.r. Kamm says:

      Congrats to you!!! And SOONER!!!

    • Matt S. says:

Congrats cd! SOONER! What will you be doing in Washington? I have family in Oregon and shipmates in Washington. With the exception of some fringe political policies, they all seem to love it up there…say it’s Gods country when it comes to scenery.

      • cdzendolet says:

Equipment Operator at the Columbia Generating Station (nuclear power plant). It is in the Tri-Cities area, which is about 3-4 hours from Seattle, Spokane, and Portland.

The area is really nice, and my son is going to love all the parks and activities.

        • Matt S. says:

I was a Nuke in the Navy, but I’m one of the few who went the business route after getting out. I’ve never worked at a civilian nuke plant. I bet you’ll love it.

          • cdzendolet says:

I was a navy nuke as well, and I ended up at Westinghouse after the Navy. Still nuclear related, but more on the business side for sure.

            Were you sub/surface? ET/EM/MM?

          • Matt S. says:

            Sub, EM. You?

          • cdzendolet says:

Surface ET. I actually sub volunteered during schooling, but they sent me to the Bush CVN 77 anyways. Turned out better in the long run, though.

          • Matt S. says:

No doubt! I regretted volunteering for sub duty. I thought we would get more hazard pay, but I found out I was wrong. Lol

          • Oscar says:

That explains why you glow! 🙂

          • Matt S. says:

Right?! Actually, in Nuke school we had an instructor who kept telling us we had an increased chance of having girls because of our exposure to low levels of radiation. 2 boys later, I’m thinking he’s either full of crap – or the force was strong with my swimmers. We did eventually get our little girl, but through adoption.

          • Oscar says:

You need 2 more for a starting 5!

          • Matt S. says:

Unless an angel shows up at the foot of my bed in the middle of the night, I’m thinking 3 is a good number for us. We are very involved with ministry, full time jobs (bi-vocational), and kids that seem to gravitate toward traveling sports teams. A basketball team would be more kiddos than our 2 man zone defense could handle right now. Lol

      • J.r. Kamm says:

Good morning, shipmate! They aren’t lying — it’s beautiful up there.

    • Ed Cotter says:

Congrats on the new job cd.

    • Oscar says:

Good morning cdzendolet! Congrats on the job. I hope the “big one” doesn’t come up there that’s expected. (prepare for evac)

    • SamSooner says:

That’s a pro-tOSU website. They’re biased and did not attend the tOSU spring game.

Edit: congratulations on the new job.

      • Birddawg says:

Didn’t you say you attended their spring game?
if you did, what are you’re thoughts?

        • SamSooner says:

I posted it after we attended the spring game. Here it is again: Enjoy:

Max and I did make it down to the tOSU spring game this past Saturday. Let me say this: wow! Over 100,000 fans made it to the game. It was interesting to hear Urban Meyers say, “I did not want this team’s first time in front of 100,000 fans to be at the season opener.” Is this an admission that he has a young/inexperienced team?

QB: I counted six interceptions, four from J.T. Barrett. One was not his fault: there seemed to be some miscommunication. He threw the ball to an open area, directly to a DB. One has to believe the WR ran the wrong route. However, the other three interceptions were on Barrett. He was forcing the issue. Forcing throws is something that, in my opinion, you don’t want to see your senior do.

Torrance Gibson is playing WR, although he’s listed as a QB on their official roster. (More on Gibson with the receivers.) I thought that was strange. It doesn’t appear he was afforded an opportunity to compete for the position.

Joe Burrow is the number two QB. Burrow impressed me more him than I was with Barrett. I’m afraid if Barrett struggles this year, Meyers will be platooning QBs again. I don’t suspect Meyers wants to do this. So if he does, that’s not good. Burrow is a QB with a live arm. He throws an accurate deep ball and his intermediate throws get to his target quickly. He doesn’t have speed that will overwhelm you but he’s just athletically enough to get out of trouble: he had to scramble a lot on Saturday. It’s going to be a QB battle, next spring, in Columbus when Haskins Jr. gets on campus.

RB: This position was hard for me to determine what the RB situation is going to be like without Ezekiel Elliott. When Barrett was in the game, I saw a lot of empty back sets in the first half. They had a RB out due to injury, supposedly the higher profile back. I can’t recall his name but I’ll research it and provide it later. However, Mike Weber, 2015 commit, 4* RB out of Michigan, provided some flashes that indicates there will not be a drop off in talent. He’s a tough, explosive, gritty runner. Something else to note: tOSU offensive game plan for the spring game had the RBs flaring out in the flat. I don’t know if the intent was to throw swing passes, run wheel routes, or just to simply occupy a defender. I’m not sure because they did this quite a bit in the first half but not one pass was thrown to the RB.

OL/DL: I think the DL won this battle. Whether it was the scarlet or gray DL, they seemed to win the battle. The QBs were under constant pressure and the RBs did not have many running lanes, it seemed. It is my belief that the defense will be the strength of this team. From what I saw on offense, nothing flashy, I think Meyers plans to win low scoring games. If this does not work, the boo-birds will be out early in 2016.

Urban had his team tackling everyone but Barrett. Let me tell you, they needed it: there was a lot of poor tackling yesterday. I would be interested in the YAC (catch or contact) for spring game. I think the success of this year’s team hinges on the success of their defense.

WR/TE: I saw a lot of five WR sets in the first half. I saw this formation with Barrett more than I did with Burrow. As a unit, I was not impressed with the WR group. They did not appear to get good separation and there was a little bit of confusion. They don’t appear to be as rangy as they’ve been in the past. However, they were targeted on a fair amount of deeps shots. The WRs are athletic and at times, (coupled with poor tackling), showed some escapability.

Torrance Gibson, as I’ve mentioned, played WR. He’s 6’4” remember. He appears to have bulked up a bit. He’s athletic and physical, showed great body control; he was inconsistent with his hands. He caught most of the balls that came his way. He didn’t make any tough catches but he dropped several easy throws; one should have been a TD. I watched him quite a bit when he was in the game: he didn’t seem to be fully engaged always. Here’s what I mean. If the ball was coming to him, he didn’t sell his route. He almost appeared to be jogging. There was one play where he stopped and the RB broke a tackle, he had to restart to attempt to make a block. Unless things improve, I don’t see this group being a major contributor to the success of the team.

I’ve been watching tOSU football over 20 years. I’ve never seen them make such an effort to get their TEs involved in the game. I saw that a lot on Saturday. Their TEs are big and physical. They did a nice job of finding opening areas and sitting down. I did not see one drop by the TEs. Passes to the TEs were near or around both hash marks, about 5-10 yards deep. That, to me, means the TEs are working on verticle routes. To repeat myself: I’ve never seen the TEs receive such a deliberate focus.

DBs: Not much to see here. I will say this: the inexperienced WRs were able to get behind their DBs. I recorded the game. I’ll have to watch the game to give my take on this unit.

Mods, I am interested in your take on what I’ve just shared.

          • Birddawg says:

            Great write up.
Sounds like a rebuild project for them. Going to have to establish an identity. I think we get the W playing them that early in season.
Their Dline vs Our oline battle.
TEs are a concern with a newcomer at ILB.
And..9 point faves is really high to me.
I think it would have been closer to 2.5-3

          • SamSooner says:

I think their DL will be their strength. But, I’d still give OU the edge in the trenches.

An early morning BOOMER too all!

  • metzker says:

    Pay back Odor lmao!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • J.r. Kamm says:

And Bautista called the reaction cowardly. Ain’t nothing cowardly about looking a fella’ in the eyes and slugging him in the jaw.

      • metzker says:

Looked like he was fixing to swing just toooooo slow!!!!!!!!!

        • RDC212 says:

That’s exactly what was happening. Odor was defending himself. Bautista was winding up for a haymaker. Now he’s acting like any bully who got what he had coming to him when someone puts him in his place on the playground.

      • Matt S. says:

True, very true. In his mind, it’s only cowardly because he didn’t throw the punch first. Odor just got a call from the UFC after that punch landed.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

lol, it didn’t even knock him down.

And cowardly is waiting until the last at-bat of the last game between the two teams to hit him intentionally. That is bush league. But what should we expect from an organization that employees druggie managers and players.

        • RDC212 says:

Bautista was freaking wobbling. He better send a fruit basket to Beltre for intervening and saving his butt because odor was gonna finish the job.

What was cowardly was trying to end a defenseless second baseman’s season with a dirty slide instead of taking it up with the pitcher who hit him. Oh wait, Bush probably had 20 pounds on him. Want to talk about bush league? That’s bush league. Odor must’ve looked like easier pickings. Lost that gamble. Bautista reacted like any bully when stood up to. He’ll think twice before trying his special brand of BS on the Rangers again.

Also, what makes you so sure it was ordered? Bautista represented the tying run in the top of the 8th in the rubber game. The pitcher on the mound wasn’t even on that team last year and is new to pitching. How do you know one just didn’t get away? It would’ve been stupid to put the tying run on base with Encarnacion coming to the plate and risk losing the game over a stupid grudge.

        • J.r. Kamm says:

Look, I could give to shits about the Rangers or the Blue Jays. I doubt the pitcher intentionally hit Bautista. I’d bet that Bautista will rethink it the next time he tries a take-out side though.

    • RDC212 says:

Bautista deserved that and more for trying to end Odor’s career.

    • ATLJTB says:

How many #12 jerseys will there be in the stands at the next Rangers home game?

Good morning to all of you guys, gals, and confused. Good morning to the lurking Texsa fans who secretly admire OU, but are afraid to admit it. Good morning to the little brothers up North. Good morning to the Big XII “Leaders” trying to remain as reactive as possible. Hope everyone had a peace filled weekend and got some much needed rest.

Did Pete Hughes save his job for one more year?

    • J.r. Kamm says:

Probably. First time winning Bedlam and the Horns’ series in quite a while.

      • Matt S. says:

That may be unfortunate, but the young guys are playing well and he probably does deserve a chance to see if they make a jump next year. That is, if I’m trying to be objective.

        • Oscar says:

It is so hard to tell what is going on “inside” the program as Joe C. sees it. They are playing pretty good and won two rival series, which is great, but, is all the back-room, program building infrastructure much better or has it fallen back? Only Joe C. knows. We do seem to have some good young talent.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

That is what I was thinking as well. At first I thought he was on his way out the door and the program was just being cordial and waiting until the season ended. But he has had some impressive victories. Tough for Joe C. The beginning of the season was pretty rough.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Morning all. Time to Thunder up.

  • Jeff says:

That is why OU needs to leave the Big 12 ASAP

#LSU had more players ranked among the NFL’s Top 101 players for 2015 than one entire Power5 conference

    • Oscar says:

Not a strong argument for leaving the conference.

      • Jeff says:

So staying in a league than produces less talent is a good thing??

        • Malicong says:

You have to also consider the source. OU doesn’t need to make any changes because a very flawed and inaccurate list tells them they don’t produce enough talent.

        • Oscar says:

Using that as the basis for an argument for leaving is weak.

          • Jeff says:

How homie? $ec make a lot more than Big 12 and send more players to the NFL

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

While I agree that joining the SEC would make more sense than anything else, producing NFL talent isn’t one of them. We already produce enough NFL talent in most drafts to be recognized as a NFL factory. With that said, OU would have a top 10 recruiting class EVERY year if they joined the SEC. We have one this year (so far), but it’s been a while. I hope we go, but you’ll never hear me chanting, “SEC, SEC…”

          • OohRah Mama says:

‘Speck for that last sentence right there…

          • Oscar says:

You are correct that it is a sign of weak teams and schools in the league. Kansas has been down since Mangino, Tech = average, Iowa State fair but getting stronger, K State has been struggling. The Whorns=suck. Those have been the weakest. Out of those Kansas least likely to rebound much. Iowa S is getting better, Tech has some good recruiting happening, Bill Snyder will rebound. The lack of NFL players is just a by-product of lots of bad athletic directors (especially kansas and tech). Everyone of those schools can be highly competitive with the right leadership. It can’t be money, look at texas. Things will cycle around, whether or not we are still in the league.

  • Malicong says:

A little breakdown from Football Focus Top 101. According to their rankings:

Aaron Rodgers is not one of the top 101 players in the league and is not a top 6 QB.
The top 3 RB in the league (and only ones in the top 101) are Doug Martin, Jonathan Stewart, and Lamar Miller.
Despite leading the league in rushing, Adrian Peterson is not one of the top 101.
Gerald McCoy is not one of the top 6 DT’s in the league and not in the top 101.
Despite making it to 4 consecutive Pro-Bowls, Trent Williams is not a top 7 tackle and not in the top 101.
Doug Baldwin is the 7th best WR in the NFL.
Basically the list is a load of BS. A couple of LSU guys are on the list ahead of better players and several Big XII players were left off for no real reason.
It also doesn’t factor that two of the best WR’s in the league were injured last year and they are from the Big XII, Jordy Nelson and Dez Bryant.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

I still think that the 2008 team was one of the best, and personally I feel they were screwed. We lost DeMarco Murray, an NFL MVP RB. The guy was legit and a vital part of the offense. Chris Brown a decent back, but not DeMarco.

And the refs…you know what I remember about that game? The Florida players taking dives, and the refs slowing the game down. Taking their time lining up the ball and just not familiar with the up tempo offense. I remember yelling about lining up the ball. Plus, the media’s infatuation with Tebow. The whole thing just blew.

    • Defend Colfax says:

      RED ZONE %

    • SoonerinLondon says:

That first pass play, when Sam went deep and the Florida DB lit-up our WR, set the tone. Firstly, the ball hit the DB in the back, which meant he was there early but there was no PI call. Secondly, after that our WRs were hesitant the rest of the game…even the int at the end could have been caught but their DB simply wanted it more.

After that, all-everything guard Duke Robinson gets blown-up and forced to hold, bringing back a long pass to Gresh that had us in scoring position. Being unable to score on fourth and goal from the 1 was incredibly costly (as Wilson ran the same play on every 3rd or 4th and short the entire game). Then, of course, Sam making an amazingly bone-headed pass before the half, that left us with no points. The only pass he can’t make is short of the endzone or an int…he passes short of the goal line AND has it batted into the air for an int. (Even in the pros Sam gets a little shaky in the redzone.)

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Iglesias had a deep ball hit him in the hands and bounces off for an int. Scared. That’s three td’s left on the field. We should of routed them boys.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

OU Softball is just awesome…that is all.

    • akryan says:

On this note, all of the sports at OU are great to watch. We give all the attention to football and basketball, but the kids who play all the other sports are every bit as athletic for the sport they do. I love watching Perine, but he can’t do a back flip on a balance beam or throw a softball 70mph. With so many great programs that OU, you owe it to yourself to go watch the other sports. Most of them are free, and you’ll be amazed by the athleticism you see.
