FOOTBALL (FREE)

Stunned, STUNNED I SAY, to see Boren/OU wasted little time pulling this clown back into line.

Sooners @ No. 7 (behind TCU, though, which seems way to high for them, IMO).

ICYMI yesterday, the now former Sooners WR reuniting with Jay Norvell out in the desert.

Shameless.

Boomer Sooner and good morning to everyone!

    • McKinzie says:

Same here. Either do it or stop making idle threats.

    • Ura Hogg says:

Obviously there are only tough options left in regards to OU and the Big 12. They really need to be discussing which choice leads to the best long-term outlook:

      A. Do nothing and continue to endure the agonizingly slow death of the conference.

      B. Bring in a couple of sub-par programs just for the sake of numbers and dilute even more the talent level of the conference.

      C. Bite the bullet initially and get off the sinking ship, heading to a better power conference. Of course, ‘better power conference’ means ANY other power conference.

I really hope they don’t believe A or B are actually options.

  • Framoka says:

Good Morning Sooners! Third; lots of news to read. Thanks Jordan.

  • Bob Edwards says:

Conference co-pitcher of the week? Why just co-pitcher? Why not co-left handed starting pitcher, and tri-right handed relievers? Why don’t we divide up awards so that everyone can get a gold star? Except for Texas players of course.

  • J.r. Kamm says:

    Good morning, fellow Brainiacs!!! BOOMER!!!

Good morning Brainiacs!! “It is always a great day to be a SOONER” I heard somewhere that the BigXII is thinking about expanding? Anyone else hear anything?

        • Stephen Dale says:

what would you like me to say ? that usually gets folks going…. how about the signing of the PG tells us that Trae Young is most likely headed to Duke, Kansas, or Kentucky…. thoughts ?

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Mornin, SD. Let’s see, How about whatever the outcome the SOONERS will go undefeated this season. I know it will make people think you have a fever just by using those two words in the same sentence.

          • Stephen Dale says:

47……….sorry but I don’t think OU goes undefeated or wins the Little 12 this upcoming season…..losses to tOSU, Texas , WV, and either TCU or Baylor not only seem possible but likely……particularly if Mayfield gets dinged up ……like OU is a late December minor bowl game this year with Texas winning the Little 12 and making the NC playoffs…True frosh Shane Buechele will be frosh of the year and Charlie Strong gets a restructured , new 6 yr extension…….

          • Birddawg says:

            Wtf?
How many wins does Charlie need to get in order to receive a “6 yr! Deal!??!?! six yearrss. No way he would get that long of a deal.
We wont lose to TCU early.. W
WVU is a trap game but they cant stop the run. We have a nfl sized line with nfl rbs coming at them. They are a undersized dline.. that’s a W.
Texsa sucks. But they will have that RPO offense with texsa talent and the D to back it up. Tough game… Time for Stoops to bury strongs career
tOSU lost everyone. Early Road game for them against a playoff team with a Heisman candidate QB… Stoops exacts revenge on Urban meyer.
To his credit if Baker does get hurt its going to be rough season but that’s with any team losing their starting QB.. Baylor lost to Texsa last year.. know one would have thought that but Baylor had ZERO qbs.

          • Cav66 says:

            SD…are you pot stirring again?

          • Stephen Dale says:

nope. calling it like I think it will happen…

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Bahahaha…Texas…If we didn’t know it before, we certainly know it now. You don’t believe the stuff you write any more than we do. Why don’t you take this season off? Will you admit going in OU is more talented than the schools you mentioned, all but possibly Ohio St and will be favored in that game? So, you are going against all other “experts” with this asinine view.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Is it not feasible to take both? Or can Kruger not pull it off?

          • Ura Hogg says:

Glad to know Young likes OU. If Young is considering Duke, Kansas, or Kentucky then obviously this recent pickup of Shepherd won’t affect his OU decision. All of those schools will have as much or more competition for playing time than OU. So, no, Shepherd coming isn’t going to be a factor that turns Young away.
His father may like other schools, but Blake Griffin and Buddy Hield both have shown you can be the best basketball player in the country at OU.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

The President Boren/Weitzenhoffer thing is not about football or expansion.

Weitzenhoffer is still pissed off that he donated all the money to pick that high-school-quality band director and Boren had to cave to pressure from the fans, who hated the shows, and the band members, who were going to refuse to do their half-time show. That’s all that is happening here.

He’s right about expansion, though. The teams talked about for expansion add nothing to the conference. We just give them credibility. He was right about the playoff, too, but I still wish we would have won.

Remember, though, that President Boren is not in favor of expansion. He is in favor of 1) Adding teams, 2) Adding a CCG AND 3) Building a conference TV network. It’s all 3 or none. That’s an important point and one that could lead OU to another conference.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

Honest question, do these guys have any real connections or insight that leads to these predictions or do they know about as much as us and just have a website for fun and giggles?

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

They have a website dedicated to generating click$. No special insight/talents required.

      • Malicong says:

From what I can tell, it was written by someone with about as much insight as someone with a internet connection.

I’d love to play Nebraska again. Not saying it’s good for the conference but I loved the rivalry.

    • hOUligan says:

Won’t happen anytime soon, but, like many, thinking of total realignment along regional lines w/ 4 16 team conferences w/ a playoff slot from each. In the meantime, if texsa and the B12 can’t agree on a formula to put together a network, would like to see OU OUt. B1G ‘west’ w/ Nebraska makes the most sense.

      • cush creekmont says:

You realize that with the CURRENT P5 schools AND ND, the total is 65 teams. At 64, one gets booted – THAT will be interesting to see.

finally a play-in game I would actually watch

        • hOUligan says:

IF this happened it would be years down the road and a lot can and will happen in the interim. One of those ‘things’ might be realignment within the ncaa among the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ as when there was discussion of mutiny among the ‘power schools’. Looking at the subsidies being paid you wonder which schools could elect to move down. The ‘power schools’ you see now could and likely will change.

Watched this game in 77. So nervous as a 16 year-old. Best kicker in Sooner history, had a decent pro career as well. I talked to Thomas Lott who said “We fumbled 10 times, should have hung half a hundred on them boys.”

When I saw/heard about Max Weitzenhoffer’s coming out and giving an opposite viewpoint of Boren and stated that there were numerous regents that shared his opinion and then threw out Clay Bennett’s name…..I imagine the Boren’s office exploded. Let alone Clay Bennett, who I guarantee you he doesn’t like having his name come out in the press, gave Max a phone call.

Max needs to stick with the Fine Arts department and leave the Athletics Department alone.

  • soonerjunky says:

Need some advice: I’m coaching a 8U coach pitch some what competitive team. The league put out a statement stating this league is competitive and everyone does not have to play.
Here’s the problem, we have 16 kids on the team; 5/6 of them are completely lost and can’t actually play. They can’t catch, can’t throw, can’t hit, and can’t think on the field.
    Do I play them all?
We are currently undefeated in our league and are trying to win. If I play them all, there’s a good chance we lose, because like I mentioned a few of them are not any good. Let me mention the parents aren’t very “serious” about their son getting better. These kids are iffy about even showing up to practice.

These kids have played in past games, so it’s not like I don’t play them. But should they play every game?

    • Boom says:

Here is the question you need to ask yourself. Will you take the top kids and form a select or elite team? If not, then play one or two per inning in RF or R Center. Coach them up, that’s your job. If you are going the other route of select or higher, then focus on putting the kids in the best position to win knowing this is the last metro team they will be on.

      • soonerjunky says:

The other team in our town formed his own hand picked team. We got the left overs and are actually better than they are. One kid that is on the bottom half is older than most, but has anger issues and cries and throws fits. Our oldest kid is the worst of them all. Bad attitude wont try hard. WILL NOT make any effort, afraid of the ball, refuses to play outfield, wont play catcher, but his mom is over the top trying to be too helpful.

        • Boom says:

I get it. From the time they were 4 years old and up, I coached one thing over and over – confidence. I explained what it meant and how to play with it. In practice I would encourage them on the field when they did something well, I told them, that’s playing with confidence. Amazing how much better all of them became. As for the anger or attitudes, let them know the pros mess up. I brought an iPad to practice and showed them even the best messed up. Always told them if you play with confidence and mess up at full speed, no problem.
Afraid of the ball – take a bucket of tennis balls and play catch with him before practice. Not hard but close and if one hits him on the head say – did that hurt. Make him smile as it has to be fun. Amazing how much better he will do in practice.
Key was encouraging them, not barking as that will come when they are older. It’s amazing when one or two start doing well how the other will follow.
I always remember this as it was my motto. 8 year olds don’t take HS math. They have years to work on math to get better in order to handle HS math. Same with sports, you can’t coach them HS math when they only understand 3rd grade math.

    • ⚡️Electric Sooner⚡️ says:

8U play them all, at least I would. I think at that age it’s to early to be worried about W and L

      • soonerjunky says:

They don’t show up to practice, cant get too much better if you don’t practice. Parents don’t work with their kids at home either

        • Fear The Magic says:

Make that conditional. If you dont show up top practices you dont play.

        • ⚡️Electric Sooner⚡️ says:

When you play the hand picked team play your best players and crush them! When you play the other teams play as many players as you can, but still win the game. This is what I would do if I was tring to win every game.

      • rainydaze114 says:

I remember being about that age and I definitely cared about winning and losing. I hate losing.

    • BleedCrimson says:

I coached all of the youth teams of my son’s from kindergarten thru grade school. One team in particular was similar in that we had several kids that I was afraid for their health if I put them on the field. However, if the kids showed up to practice I would allow them to play at least one inning and pray they survived their turn. With their time on the field they gained experience and confidence and was niticably better by the end of the season. One of the most rewarding coaching experiences I had.

      • soonerjunky says:

I agree. the kids im talking about can’t play infield (safety concern). They can’t protect themselves. I have good reasons not to play about 3 kids so that will help. I’ll let all of them know that if they have bad attitudes, miss any practice, or don’t show up to games, they will sit a game or two.

    • Thomas Lenard says:

If they are not showing up to practice, then they are giving you the “out”. I believe they all should play, but I wouldn’t play those that don’t show up to practice as much, but you have to be consistent with that, even if its your good players. Remember it should be about the children. get a HS, or even a JH, kid to help those that need help during practice.

    • KJ1123 says:

      Winning is everything! 🙂
Play the kids that deserve to play.

      • soonerjunky says:

        Sarcasm?

        • KJ1123 says:

Not really. Just my opinion, kids/parents need to know that you have to work for it, whatever it is. Not just show up and play. Again just my opinion.

          • soonerjunky says:

I agree with you, I have 2 kids that I have reasons not to play them, one of them is really good. He doesn’t show up to practice often leaves game before our team meeting after. The other kid is the worst, but very bad attitude, flips off people, wont try, scared of the ball. On and on. I’ll sub a couple of kids in at right field. Thanks

          • JD says:

Maybe put em in right field for an inning or two then sub em out for the better player for the rest of the game…that said…if its competitive then you play the best and play to win…they are privileged to be on the team and just practicing with better players will make them better in the long run. The parents and kid should be told this and highly encourage the kid to practice hard and continue to improve and they will get there eventually. They should always feel a part of the team though and even encouraged by their teammates …jmo

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      No practice no play

    • Fear The Magic says:

I used to have that problem too. I ended up just playing the kids with the best looking mothers.

    • ccmosaic says:

At this point in their lives the only thing that matters is the love of the game and the basics. If a kid loves the game no matter how bad he is now he will work on it on his own as he grows and matures. If you burn the kids out and turn other kids off for the sake of a championship at that age it could backfire.
I am speaking from personal experience. I played college ball and if it were not for drugs may have been able to play a little semi-pro. When my boys were in coach pitch I was a complete jerk. I pushed and pushed, played on the good kids and in the end my kids have an championship under their belts (Coach pitch.) But a year later both my boys dropped out and have never played the game sense then.
If I could do it again I would have focused on getting the kids to love the game and to understand the basics. At this age that is all that matters.

      • John Garner says:

Yes love of the game and fundamentals. I don’t know what coach pitch is but I’ll be stepping back and coaching youth football this year. Looking forward to teaching the game I love.

    • Cav66 says:

Make them earn it (albeit gently at that age). Play the kids that come out and make an effort to improve. Reward the effort with playing time. If they don’t show or refuse to try, they clearly don’t care that much anyway. I would try strike the best possible balance between trying to win (there is goodness in striving for excellence) while rewarding those who make an honest effort.

      • soonerjunky says:

Half don’t care about baseball or getting better

        • rainydaze114 says:

Sounds like you’re a baby sitter disguised as a coach…;)

        • Boom says:

It’s your job to find a way which would make then care. Getting better only comes when they care. Try some different approaches. I would give them tennis balls and dare them to hit me at 1st base. They would line up a SS and start zinging them at me. They had a blast. Then I said, if you can throw like that, pick up that baseball and do the same thing. Amazing what happened.
I was that guy who did different things, almost acted like a kid too. They had fun and I still see them to this day and we always have a laugh. BTW – 90% of those kids are playing on Premier teams traveling multiple states playing in tourneys.

Tough one coach. So you run into a numbers issue if you only play those who try? I would to go the meritocracy route in that situation. The players who make the honest effort get top billing, followed by those who are just better players (they made an effort somewhere along the line), followed by those who don’t care in minimal spot duty (where they are unlikely to hurt themselves or others). Even if you have to eat a loss, it might pay dividends in terms of natural competitive instinct and peer pressure.

      • diablodejalisco says:

some coaches will make them better people and some don’t have the time for them. so kids just need a little more discipline than others because they don’t get it at home. some coaches give up too quick on kids and don’t realize what some of the things these kids go through at home. it takes patience and you must care in your heart. but, the kid must also care and want to be better.

        • Cav66 says:

Agree with most if not all. Ideally, it is a two way street. You don’t always get the ideal, but that is where the patience and perseverance comes in.

DISCLAIMER…Not trying to be a pompous ass here, just sharing my opinion….
I have coached youth sports, including little league baseball for 14 years. Had some teams do very well (league and tournament championships) and had some that had room for much improvement. In fact my first teams players are all high school seniors this year. Very neat to see the friendships and relationships that were formed with the boys and their families. It all started around 5 year old coach pitch baseball.
To be honest, I do not remember the wins and loses as much as the shared experiences with the boys. At 8U you are not developing high school or college ball players. You are exposing kids to the game and helping them find out if they have a passion for it or not. I bet most of us have trophies in our keep sake boxes that we don’t even remember the seasons they represent.
I would never put a kid in a position to get hurt. If you can’t catch, 1st base isn’t for you. If you can’t pay attention, infield might not be the safest place to play. But I would never tell a kid you aren’t playing because you might make us lose. Who cares? Parents more than the kids. A team soda or snow cone erases the score in a matter of minutes, if not seconds.
No doubt, you need to be at practice to deserve to play. That is part of the lesson that sports teach. Dedication and working to improve. Unfortunately when you are 8, its is more on the parents to ensure you are at practice and ensure you go even if you don’t want to go.
After the season is the appropriate time to weed out the players you may not want to come back to your team next season. If you signed up to coach the team you were given, that is what you need to do. Do your best to help each player have a great experience.
Good luck in whatever you decide. You have a great opportunity to have a positive influence on both the kids and parents you are working with.

      • soonerjunky says:

Would you bench a kid 1 game that did not show up to practice, missed the first tournament game, left directly after our last game and skipped team meeting? Bench him in favor of teaching a lesson and getting another kid play time? Also, play a kid that is flipping off parents and refused to play where you put him?

        • rainydaze114 says:

I would tell their parents to not bring them back, ever.

        • StL Sooner says:

I would (almost always) sit a kid that doesn’t show up to practice, misses a game or leaves before the team is dismissed. How long he is benched, would be determined by the expectation you set for the team during your preseason parent meeting and any circumstances surrounding the events. School program or family emergency is not treated the same as wanted to play video games. Planned / communicated absence is not same as unplanned / uncommunicated absence. The recurrence of such events also figures in to the length of the “punishment”.
If an 8 year old is flipping off parents, you have your hands full. That is much more parent/coach combined effort to correct that behavior. If the parents don’t care, I feel sorry for the position you are being put in.
I believe communicating with the parents about your planned actions ahead of time is the best approach. Some may get angry but most appreciate the approach.

        • Boom says:

Team meeting, that’s for parents. We won our first game and I was addressing the players. After 15 seconds I get quiet and could hear them saying – where you playing today. They had no clue I was talking or anyone else. They just wanted to leave and go have fun – they’re kids. That put me in my place and I’ve always laughed at that story since.

      • Deake says:

Great post. I agree completely. At this age it’s all about exposure to the game, relationships and fun. Kids mature at different rates, often times the kids that are the best at age 8 may not be the best when they get to HS. Unfortunately many of the kids that have potential are turned away from the game because it wasn’t fun for them at an early age. Being competitive at 8; as mentioned above is often more about the parents. There’s plenty of time to compete. Teach them the game.

I also agree that if the effort is not there or team rules are broken it is ok to sit kids out. Lay the foundation for that at your parents meeting.

      • Dustin says:

This. All of this. They’re just kids. Put them on the field.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

        What a thoughtful comment.

    • rainydaze114 says:

It’s never too early to teach kids that you have to earn what you get. Sports shouldn’t be about participation medals. Explain to them why they aren’t playing, and if that doesn’t make them want to work to play, they probably shouldn’t be playing. That’s how it was for me when I grew up at least and I turned out alright (in my opinion of course).

    • BigJoeBrown says:

IMO….My experience…I rode the pine in basketball as a kid. We were just little kids, it didn’t make sense. I went to practice and tried to get better but only played the last 30 seconds. While the same kids were out there on the court all game. The parents/coach’s took it to serious…like I said, “we were just little kids, and as a kid, I knew this”

Well time goes on, and I develop. Got bigger, stronger and faster and just overall more physical. My dad encouraged me to play football, but I didn’t want to because I thought the coach’s would never let me play because that’s all I knew. But these new FB coach’s didn’t know me nor the favorite kids. Long story short…I realized that I could punish the “popular athletic kids” because I got bigger and they didn’t. It sounds demented but I made sure that those kids cried, or winced or tried to get a different spot in line when going up against me and their parents or old coach’s knew that their kid or favorite was no longer top dog. A majority of them quit.

I ended up coaching kids youth inner city football. The more athletic kids at the time wanted all the playing time as did their parents. But I could have cared less I just wanted them to enjoy football and tried to play everyone equally. And sure enough a couple of the “non athletic clumsy kids” ended up sticking with football, became more physically developed, played ball in high school and ended up playing D-1 ball. While the ones that were athletic as youth’s, got burnt out or just never developed physically.

(There is my novel) IMO, kids are just kids, allow this moment in life to be kids and get the opportunity to enjoy it and develop. BTW Later on the basketball coach’s asked me to try out but F’that….I still hate basketball.

      • Boom says:

Big Joe, great read. I look at your basketball situation a little different. Everyone has to overcome something/s in their life in order to succeed. These set backs are the backbone of what you do later in life. You didn’t play basketball which made you mad but it pushed you later in other sports. This type of motivation doesn’t just grow on trees, it comes from within. One bad experience pushed you to reach greater heights in other areas.
I could be wrong but that is what fueled me as mine was a little different. Still fuels me to this day.

Hopefully, BoomerDave can join in on this discussion at some point. He coached my very competitive youth team (won state and national championships on an annual basis) from age 5 to 14 and I’m sure can provide some helpful insight.

    • BoomerDave says:

As cpearc00 said below, I coached highly competitive youth teams that won 22 State Championships and 3 National Championships over a span of 9 years, so I have a little insight of what you are going through. First let me say that if a boy came to practice and did what was asked of him, I saw that he got to at least make an appearance in every game. Perhaps only one at-bat or one inning in the field, but at least he got to play some. That being said, my situation and yours were quite different. It’s hard to be highly competitive with 16 players if you plan on playing them all. I only carried 11-12 on my roster thus insuring that everyone got playing time was much easier. Plus, all of my players were very good. You don’t win national championships with average players.
As for this year, do what you feel is best. But down the line, as in next year, I suggest that you reduce the number of players that you carry. It’s hard to even conduct a productive practice with that many players. I would simply inform the parents of those who don’t seem to be very “serious” as you put it, that your intentions going forward are to have the most competitive team possible and that it would be in their child’s best interest to go to a less competitive team where their child’s playing time would be greater. Good luck. There is nothing more enjoyable than coaching a group of boys as youths and then watching them all succeed in HS and at the college level. Sounds like you’ve got a good “core” group to start with if you are undefeated thus far. Success breeds osuccess. Good players want to play on winning, well coached teams. Keep winning and parents of good players will be burning up your phone wanting to a part of what you’ve got going.

    • Jake H. says:

My two cents, play them all. They need someone to build their confidence. To show faith in them. They won’t remember the wins and losses as much as they’ll remember the coach that taught them the game, taught them to love it, taught them that winning isn’t everything, relationships are everything.
If the parents can’t get behind that, they need a new team.
