Addressing the Baker Mayfield Situation

If by some chance you were still unaware, last night the official OU Football Twitter account sent out the following:

It was somewhat unprecedented in that from what I can gather, few people, if any, can seem to recall a similar instance in which OU has chosen to publicly address the reporting of an injury. Or at least chosen to do so in the manner in which they did last night.

It would also seem this was meant as a direct response to my reports from both this past Monday and Wednesday. Many will say (or have already said) this tweet was intended to refute what I reported, and perhaps that was the intent. But whatever the intent, it does certainly confirm at least some of what I first reported.

I feel compelled to take some time to re-address the actual facts of my reporting on this Baker Mayfield situation. My intent here is to reiterate the facts of what I have actually reported. Normally I would not feel this was necessary. But given that what I reported has been taken so far out of context and misrepresented — a lot of which, of course, is simply inherent with the Internet — by some, I felt this dictated a response on my part.

So again, let us quickly go back and re-address the actual facts.

– I was first to report there was any issue or otherwise with Baker Mayfield’s shoulder. Since then literally every single person that has reported and/or commented on this situation, including OU last night, has also confirmed there is an issue with Mayfield’s shoulder. Whether they have referred to it as soreness, or fatigue, or whatever term they have chosen to use, the consensus, by all accounts, is that there is an issue with Mayfield’s shoulder. That alone would seem to make, what appears to be, a reference to my reporting as “unfounded” a little disingenuous.

For those who question my sources, I’d simply remind you that no other news outlet was even aware there was any kind of shoulder issue, or that Baker sat out this past week until I reported it. And yet now, again, everyone is acknowledging there is in fact an issue, though the nature of said issue is obviously the point of contention.

– I was first to report Mayfield sat out this entire past week of workouts. This has not been refuted by anyone.

– I specifically stated that I could NOT confirm the full extent of the injury, nor offer a timeline for his recovery or return to practice/workouts. However, I did report what I knew at the time because missing multiple workouts in a week this time of year is not ‘normal’ or ‘ordinary’ despite what some may have you believe.

– It would seem the lone point of contention is what’s causing this issue with Mayfield’s shoulder. Whether referred to as “shoulder fatigue” or soreness, neither of those address the medical source of said “fatigue” and/or soreness. My sources attributed the injury/issue to his rotator cuff, and I continue to stand by what I reported.

What we know is that this “fatigue” has been serious enough to prevent Mayfield from practicing this past week. Nothing in the official OU tweet denies that, no other news outlet has refuted that, and I have no reason to doubt what I have been told by my sources. And I am NOT accusing anyone of anything here, but to be fair this definitely wouldn’t be the first time a representative from OU attempted to use language that downplayed the degree of an injury.

No matter. Whatever “fatigue” means, it certainly was made to sound like something a few days of rest and relaxation could potentially heal. So after the extended holiday weekend off, it should be reasonable to expect Mayfield will be back out on the field throwing when the players return next week. Perhaps at that time some of the other outlets will utilize their sources to report on whether he is indeed back out there.

I will say one more time, I continue to stand by what I reported. I was careful only to report what I had been able to confirm through multiple sources, some of which has also since been confirmed by other outlets as well as someone who is evidently speaking on behalf of the OU Football program.

One final note I’d like to add is with regards to my sources, or really just ‘sources’ in general. It’s only through our sources that we have been able to provide you updates on players in the offseason (something you probably won’t find much of elsewhere), or having been the first to report on certain coaching changes (see the Kerry Cooks hiring), report commitments (see, among others, the Austin Kendall commitment – it took almost an hour for any other outlet to confirm our initial report of Kendall’s commitment). When you aren’t permitted to see things with your own eyes, you have to use sources whom you trust.

In fact, just a couple of weeks ago we were first to report the news — both regarding his desire not to attend UT & his interest in OU — on Du’Vonta Lampkin. Several major Texas media outlets attacked our report. In fact, Lampkin’s own coach denied the validity of the report through a well-known ESPN CFB writer. But I trusted my sources, stood by the story, and shortly thereafter Lampkin himself confirmed our report.

It doesn’t mean I’m always right, no one can be held to that impossible standard. But we do believe in our protocol, practices, and our sources. And as far as I’m concerned, it has led us to bringing our readers a tremendous amount of behind the scenes news and updates they may not otherwise be privy to. And we plan on continuing to do so, free of charge.

We appreciate your standards in verification of information. Puts the others to shame.

  • KJ1123 says:

You’re good K…it’s not at all unfounded. You don’t sit in the training room all week getting treatment for shoulder fatigue. Your sources are fine. As you know other outlets troll this site all the time. If what you guys reported didn’t have any merit, they wouldn’t bother.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Shoulder fatigue? that sounds like he is just sore, which in IMO is not worthy of missing valuable practice time, so he is most likely suffering some sort of minor injury(which is worthy of missing practice).

Keep up the good work K, I’d be willing to bet OU is just minimizing the situation.

  • Ed Cotter says:

TFB is the best. The fact that you and the other TFB contributors have such good inside sources makes everyone else mad. I will take your reports over any other site any day of the week. Have a great 4th with your families.

  • SoonerSouthoftheRed says:

Keep up the good work, K.

  • FMsooner1 says:

Thanks K. Perhaps the rumor mill runs wild when we talk of ifs and buts. I appreciate the information.
It will be interesting to watch the communication with other news sources over the next few days/weeks.

Free of charge??!!?? Jordan told me to send him $20 if I wanted to read TFB!

He’s been rolling around in a fresh new set of wheels lately. I should’ve known something was up!

I’ve been sending him $40 every two weeks for months, plus extra for OPs. All my friends are.

nothing but support for you K

  • Eli Kalika says:

LOL at shoulder fatigue. That isn’t a medical term- no doctor told them that term as a diagnosis. Usually we use terms like fatigue to try to explain other injuries in layman’s terms. It’s possible Baker just needs to rest his shoulder for awhile, and the condition will improve- thus the use of the term in an explanation. However, just to clarify, shoulder fatigue is not a diagnosis, and does not discount what you stated in the least K. He could very well have a rotator cuff injury that he was told to stay off. I wish i knew more to give a better picture of what Baker is looking at in terms of recovery.

    • boomersooner says:

It’s usually what trainers and coaches use to explain it when they have to dumb it down for writers, usually a step beyond layman’s terms

      • Eli Kalika says:

Yep. Point is, whoever posted that tweet might have felt like they were refuting what Super K reported, or not. Either way, rotator cuff injury, or the dumbed dumb version of shoulder fatigue aren’t mutually exclusive terms. One is more specific and tells you much more about prognosis, but both are very vague.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I’ve been suffering from “adrenal fatigue” for years. #jokes

    • soonerthunder says:

Maybe shoulder fatigue is not a medical term, however, it is a coaching/sports term. Anyone who has thrown a lot has had it, baseball or football.

  • SamSooner says:

Super K, you guys rock! We trust and respect the way you all do things. Thanks for taking the time to spell this out for us. We really appreciate it.

  • rainydaze114 says:

Even if it was “fatigue”, it’s still concerning given that it’s still summer and his arm is already getting so tired that he can’t practice. That shouldn’t happen unless he’s throwing an exorbitant amount during the 7 on 7s, which probably isn’t the case.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

7 on 7 is nothing but throwing in my experience.

      • Drew says:

Well, no matter how far ahead he may/may not have been of TK, he was still splitting reps. And besides, I doubt they had him doing more than Riley’s asked of his other QBs, and we haven’t heard of this happening with them.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

    Appreciate the info.

  • EasTex says:

I know you felt compelled to address this matter again, Super K.
For the 18 months I have been following here I have no reason to doubt you or your sources and you have enough cred with the folks that actually follow here(not the trolls) that you would get a mulligan if you did get one wrong.
Unlike those who would criticize you, if you didn’t get a story right you would own up to it and not just pretend nothing had happened.

  • ColoradoSooner says:

I have brain fatigue. Maybe I shouldn’t go to work next week?

  • Jeff says:

This is still not good news, I bet he doesn’t last the entire season

  • TheFuerte says:

I think the program has the right to protect the privacy of the players just as you have the right to report on the program. I coach, and if someone up at school was spreading the word that any of my runners had a nagging injury, I’d try to end the discussion. The more an injury is discussed, the bigger impact the injury has on the athlete’s mentality.

    • TheFuerte says:

These athletes are in the business of garnering attention, but it doesn’t mean that the school isn’t allowed to protect the kids from as much negative attention as possible. You may indeed be a “right good markman,” and your sources may be 100% accurate. The school is less concerned with the accuracy and more concerned with the attention. I assure you.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

      Silence is also a response.
The truth has a greater impact on one’s mentality, not rumors.

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

And replying to your own post/commentary is a little weird.

        • TheFuerte says:

I’m not trying to upset the regulars here or attack any of the brainiacs. I’m just adding a perspective to the discussion. This is the only board I post on, and I created a disqus profile solely to post here because everyone got along, so I won’t ruin that environment by posting anymore on this subject.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

“Fatigue” – non-specific symptoms related to tiredness, malaise, lack of motivation, and decreases in overall performance.

Thus, “fatigue” is a catch-all for “I hurt.”

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

You know it’s really frustrating not to have official reports on injuries. During the season, Stoops argued that injury reports can put a player at risk. Does that apply now? Only if they plan to have Mayfield play injured correct?

If this is a tear, he’ll need surgery and within two-three weeks from the time of the injury. In my view, they are waiting to see if it heals and then at the end of this coming week will announce surgery and a redshirt for Baker if it is a rotator cuff tear. Sad, but at least we’ll have him for two more years.

Super K. I have a position that is similar to yours. If you continue to do what you do you will be attacked. It goes with the territory. If you act in all good conscience, ignore the criticisms, just continue to live with integrity. We appreciate this site very much. K I think I can speak for most of us when I say that I completely understand your need to defend your position on this subject. That being said please know that we know that no one is infallible (not referring to this subject but in general ). We’re very aware that you will hit way more home runs than have strike outs and we’re just grateful for the information that you provide to us on a daily basis. Its very much appreciated.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Off season is off season. There are people who will always come here and attack because they just can’t appreciate hard work that others do for free, then there are those who read here and bad mouth TFB at other sites to get some kind of attention I guess. Keep on keeping on, you will always have more fans than critics.

  • Brad Warren says:

I agree with K. Random for OU to post some type of injury rebuttal on twitter. I’m going to hope for the best but expect, well you know. Boomer!

  • JJSoona says:

Super K is still SUPER. Jealousy is a terrible thing. I haven’t been able to be here in awhile but the workload has eased. (thank you Jesus!).

A response from OU? Looks like you guys can’t be ignored anymore. Congratulations! I understand why this piece needed to be written. However, I (and I’m sure most others on this site) will say that it was just reaffirming what we already know, that you guys are the best at what you do.

Dang I’m gone for a few weeks and I see you guy’s have stirred the hornets nest (jk). It’s sad the way people take a bit of info and just run with it. Oh well. I know it’s been said, but you guy’s don’t owe us an apology,or anyone for that matter. You’re by far the cheapest 😉 and best site for all Sooners news. I know it helps me keep my sanity here in Ohio.

This website has shifted from a good, insightful oklahoma sooner football forum to a lousy he said / she said ego trip. The guys that run this site spend more time writing articles about how “I am right” or “this person is wrong” than they do on breaking down film and providing “insider” / football information. I know it is about how many clicks these days, but you guys have changed the unique nature of this site into a site that models the cookie cutter pay sites. The headlines and articles have little to zero foundation in fact but stem directly from your own opinions. The articles try to provide “wow” factor instead of providing substantial information. I will no longer be reading your material. Thank you for the fun and insightful information you have previously provided.

So, in retrospect, I think “Unknown Sooner” may very well have been Baker Mayfield…

  • OceanDescender says:

Such an oddly defensive tweet. Just seems like there’s no way it was in response to the details K could dig up for us since he himself said there was no word on the extent.

  • roygbell says:

Evidently, my original post on this issue was deleted. Not sure why what I posted was so offensive.

Anyway, just what is wrong with what OU said?

There has been lots of speculation on many other OU sites other than this one. It just seems to me that OU was trying to set the record straight.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I don’t think they’re is anything wrong w/ what OU said per se. I believe K’s only, or maybe not only but main, point was that it didn’t actually address the cause of whatever “shoulder fatigue” means, nor did it refute that (1) their is an issue (which is exactly what K was reporting) and/or (2) that Mayfield has not been practicing (which is not normal or not uncommon as some have tried to pass off).

As to any deleted comments, I wasn’t aware of any. But if all you said was what you have here again above, then I’d completely agree it wasn’t worthy of being deleted.
