The Journal News is reporting that Oklahoma basketball player Isaiah Cousins has been shot in the shoulder as a result of what police have said was an errant bullet from one of two warring street gangs. According to the story and Mount Vernon (Cousins’ hometown) police commissioner Terrance Raynor, Cousins is expected to survive but it is not known at this time if the injury will affect his basketball career.

More from the story:

Cousins’ high school coach, Bob Cimmino of Mount Vernon, said: “I just hope he is well.”

Cimmino said Wednesday that Cousins was a good person who often stopped back by the high school when he returned home for the summer.

Cousins was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx for treatment.

Police said he wasan innocent bystander caught in the gunplay between the “Goonies” and “Gunnas” street gangs.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

– UPDATE: There have now been multiple reports that Cousins is expected to be fine and that he should be able to play this fall. Additionally, Lon Kruger just released this statement via the program’s official Twitter account.

Pray that he recovers. Then, hopefully the coaching staff can convince him to leave the badlands of NY and get back to OK asap..

Good to hear there is no surgery needed, probably far enough away that it was only a broken skin injury.

Glad it wasn’t a more serious injury! Glad he will make a full Recovery! Feel Better Soon Isaiah!
