Nick Saban image from WashingtonPost.com; Mack Brown image from TheStatesman.com
As you all know last week reported that we had two good sources telling us that Mack would be out and Saban would be next head coach at Texas. Here is the link to that post ( https://thefootballbrainiacs.com/?p=1726). We wanted to give you an update and say a few words.
A lot of people attacked us after we posted that last week. Our loyal readers know that all we try to do is tell y’all what we know when we are permitted to do so by our sources. And we want to thank y’all for defending us. We have no ill will towards the people that attacked us and lets face it the situation has not fully played out yet. But we wanted to make something clear. We did NOT report on this issue last week as a publicity stunt or anything of the sort. We run this site as a hobby. We all have other professions that we work in. There were many reasons we started this site two months ago. Among those reasons was to offer Oklahoma fans breakdowns and information about the Sooners. And to offer, what we consider, more authentic evaluations of talented HS players. We would never compromise our integrity as human beings to garner attention. It’s not who we are. In fact after we ran the story we were contacted by multiple media outlets including two of the largest national sports radio programs and we declined an interview. In part, because we didn’t want to give anyone the impression that we we’re using cheap tactics to gain attention. And in part because we told y’all everything we we’re allowed to say.
Those of you who have followed us in the short time that we’ve been online know that we’ve given y’all plenty of accurate recruiting information. We’ve been fortunate to not have been wrong yet but we fully expect that if we do this long enough we will be at some point. No one can be right all the time. We know that the average reader out there doesn’t necessarily know a lot about the x’s and o’s of football so we try to offer a little insight in that area. We also know that the average reader doesn’t know a lot of people that work in the football community so we try to tell y’all what we hear from our inside source. We have said repeatedly that we have NO plans to ever charge money for our information. And yes, you can take that to the bank.
We were asked over and over why we never retracted the story and the simple answer was that our sources never retracted the story and to this day they still haven’t (this is documented on twitter). Now moving on to the Mack Brown/Nick Saban situation. We can’t tell you everything we’ve heard but we will tell you what we can and you can take it however you want. If you’re media reading this, please don’t bother contacting us. We’re not interested in talking to anyone and lets be honest the only thing you offer is a few minutes of fame or publicity and we don’t give a rats ass about either of those things. If you’re anyone else, again if you don’t like what we’re saying or you don’t like our site then feel free to not visit and feel free to unfollow us on Twitter.
We have 3 sources now. The 3rd source just surfaced.
1st source – our first source was the original source that let us know this was going to happen. This is an Alabama based source that is steeped in the football community down there. Once we heard the word from this source last week we immediately contacted our second source to confirm.
2nd source – this is a Texas based source who so far has been right about everything related to the Mack Brown situation and where certain parties stand. This source confirmed our second source last week and told us that the money for Saban would be huge.
3rd source – this is an Alabama based source with ties to the Saban family. This source has contradicted the first two sources and told us that the Sabans do not plan on leaving Alabama. Again, this is our most recent source.
The latest with sources 1 and 2 is that they have NOT backed down. As the editor I am the one with the sources. I will tell you that in terms of closeness to me the 1st source is a long time friend. In terms of reliability I cant be certain which source is most reliable because they all have relationships that I trust. Again, we are not crawfishing here. As any of our readers will tell you…all we do is tell people what we’ve heard and we will sometimes offer our thoughts on that. This is what we’ve heard.
We also want to tell those of you who kept emailing us telling us that a deal between Alabama and Nick Saban had been signed; that is not true. An agreement has not been signed. A deal has been leaked but that is common practice in order to gain leverage. We have not heard anything else about the deal but we know it has not yet been signed. Also, we had some suggest that Coach Malzahn would be a target for Texas and you can go back and read our twitter – we haven’t deleted anything – we told y’all that Coach Malzahn would NOT be a candidate. And 2 days later ESPN reported on a deal with Coach Malzahn and Auburn. We don’t have final word on whether this deal has been signed but we are standing by what we’ve been told – that Coach Malzahn is not a target.

When/if Saban actually goes to Texas, the meltdown from the Bama fans will make Chernobyl look like a black cat firecracker.
Was talking to someone in Bama tonight and he said it will be a meltdown of epic proportions.
This is my first post here after several days of lurking. I love the site and I appreciate all the information that you guys have been putting out.
That being said, I guess the question that I would ask is when is this huge money that is being thrown around going to become a gigantic problem to schools? Sure they might be successful now but what if there is some big scandal and the money stops coming in? Are the schools required to keep paying those huge sums of money? My second question/observation is a revolt of professors at schools. I understand they aren’t “money makers” per se, but at one point do they get fed up with no making enough money. After all, it is a SCHOOL and not a sporting event 365 days a year. When do they light the torches? I am a very capitalistic person and I am genuinely happy for people when they make boat loads of cash, but at some point the money being thrown around becomes crazy.
College Football brings in a lot of money for Schools, they can pay the coaches whatever they want to. If professors have a problem with it they can go somewhere else, but they don’t. Just my two cents.
I agree, but I suppose it was just me thinking out loud. It also brings in a host of paying players comments if the coach is making that much, but that’s an entirely different topic.
Well sure the more money, more questions. But the football program makes their own money. They then are fortunate to have wealthy boosters to donate to the program, wealthy alumni who may be NFL players, plus the budget from the school. Some schools have bigger budgets for their football programs as well as the boosters and former players as I mentioned and Texas is one of those schools. They have (I believe) the most players in the NFL, they think of football as a religion so the school budget is huge, and the state is huge which means there are more donators to the program than they need.
I like your answer, pound sand if you don’t like us, that’s great response. Mike
Professors don’t really have the leverage to demand more..Yeah they can go to another school IF that school is interested in their research and such but in reality professors are a dime a dozer yet big time coaches are like a penny per half dollar
$10 million per year to UT for a Head Football Coach is pocket change. UT’s football program is a cash cow.
Probably been discussed, but athletics are self funded meaning that they do not use money from the general budget. By comparison, between 11′-12′, Tx’s athletics made 168 million in revenue and 138 million in expenses… Actually turning in 30 mil profit a significant portion of which funds general scholarships. It would take a good number of research grants and endowment to *consistently* match this. Also, this is a tier 1 institution so it’s not like the professors get peanuts like school teachers

I’ve heard that Texas was trying to leak the Saban story while they were actually interest in Malzahn
not what we’ve heard at all
Malzahn reportedly has a new deal with Auburn.
No confirmation of ink on paper though…
At this point everybody I, as many others I assume, am totally enthralled with this situation and look at it as a win/win for the university of Oklahoma. If they (Texas) hire Saban then it ups the cache of the big 12 conference while also weakening the SEC. This would make it easier with a win over Texas for our beloved sooners to reach the national championship even with one loss (aka auburn). It will also make it easier to win the sugar bowl. If he doesn’t come then now it looks like texas couldn’t get their man and isn’t the dominate program in the big 12 which they would concede that to OU.
My main concern would be texas getting a young stalwart, like David shaw, and he flying the flag of Texas for 15 or 20 years. He clearly would/could be there longer than bob stoops and would put pressure on us making a great hire in arms race of college coaches in the next 3 to 5 years when big game bob decides to hang up the visor.
Whoever they bring in, he will have to deal with university north of the red river and that will never be easy so I will say beware to whomever chooses to take this job at Texas.
I too have been lurking on this site for a couple weeks. I really enjoy all the info and insite you guys are giving. Keep up the good work. Who cares what the main stream media say anyway, they all have their own agenda. I appreciate this site for what it is!
Thanks bro. And we appreciate you commenting!
Thumbs Up. Keep doing what your doing.
Thanks Sonny!
Saban is the best thing for OU. I know many would disagree but if ever you wanted to challenge and light a fire under Stoops it’s knowing Saban is at UT. If Stoops is motivated(and I think he is now) then he and Saban are the two best coaches in college football. The big 12 becomes dominate again.. period!
I think Stoops will dominate Saban just like he has Mack !
I agree. My feeling is Coach Saban will do nothing but help Oklahoma in a number of ways.
Great job fellas! Keep the good info coming on Saban and OU recruits!
Thanks Michael!
Any thinking person could have made the assertion that Mack would step down, I am sure that the sources helped, but you can just play the percentages on that one. You can pretty much throw out the Texas source on whether Saban would sign because all he could know is that Texas is going to go after him and that they would offer him a ton of money — and both of those things are common knowledge, UT’s program is worth more than any cfb team and worth more than two of the NFL teams. In addition the Texas source would not be privy to Saban’s decision making he would be much more likely to engage in wishful thinking that he is coming based on the fact that Texas would offer big bucks and that said source most likely would love to have him as UT’s coach. Based on the way Saban handles himself, I would assert that the most likely reality is that he has not made any decision yet.
You think that because you don’t know who our Texas source is. Problem is these journalists try to get sources inside the program. Those people don’t know nothing. Same reason we don’t always report on recruiting by telling our readers what a kid said…a kid aint gonna tell you nothing. Now someone around the kid will. Either way Brian we appreciate you stopping by.
Well doubt you will reply because according to your stats this is the first time you have been wrong, the only story that this site has covered and was important. However, how good are you feeling about that Texas source now? — or for that matter any of your sources? It was absolute nonsense to think Saban would take the job. I attempted to convey that in a subtle way as to not be too disrepectful initially. However, you wanted to reply in a sarcastic way and act like you knew something I did not, turned out you did it just happened to be fabricated. I had a source too, a friend of mine who graduated from UT and is a rational thinker — first thing he said as almost any rational thinking person did — I cannot imagine why Saban would go to UT when he is in the situation he is in Alabama. Oh, and also your bio says you are a lawyer. Maybe you are, but I do not know very many lawyers that type things like “a kid aint gonna tell you nothing” How would anyone believe that you are a lawyer if you use such poor grammar on your own website attempting to make a point? You should at least be transparent and give your real name so visitors to the site can verify that you actually have a law degree and have passed the bar. Anyone can create a caricature and claim to be anything they want on the internet. Welcome to the world of journalism where facts matter and your arrogance about this story just blew up in a big way.
I worked the UT Rivals site. In 2000, I said the Mack Brown era would end badly. Both he and Sally would go out kicking and screaming. 13 years later, I continue to stand on that statement.
I love this site fellas. Keep up the good work! Quickly becoming my favorite forum, and I’ve seen them all.
Thanks!
Really like this site. Hopefully in the future we see this site evolve into something that discusses X and O, and recruiting only. Personally, where coaches go don’t garner my attention as we will know soon enough where Saban ends up.
Thanks for the comment Bill. And honestly you make a good point and it’s one that we’ve discussed. We want to do more things like “Trench Warfare” where we break down film and we also want to do more evaluations. We want to make sure we find that balance for y’all…and of course balance this blog/site with our own work and personal lives. But I’m glad you mentioned that because it reminds us how important that aspect of our site is and it’s certainly the aspect we love the most.
Texas offer: 10 years $100 million and a % of the ‘LHN’…Alabama has “raised” their offer to $7 million and he hasn’t even returned a phone call to anyone at Alabama that’s worried…Huh. I wonder how many of those 300+ negative commenters will apologize if you guys turn out to be correct.
I’ve been told the percentage of LHN is not on the table for Saban or anyone else.
I was told a minimum of 1% but that vary well may be false. I guess we will see
Better than expected.
How does Mack Brown firing/ Saban leaving effect Oklahoma from a recruiting standpoint?
It should elevate the perception of the Big XII nationally. We all know Saban is a great coach and great recruiter, but look at how Alabama’s main rivals have improved (LSU, Auburn), and how the SEC is all everyone talks about. Schools like Kentucky are having great 2014 recruiting classes, simply because of the draw the SEC has. I bet OU and Baylor will benefit the most from a recruiting standpoint, as both are already in the top 12 nationally.
OU has great coaches, facilities, academics, and tradition. While Texas will get a ton of recruits, they always get tons of 4* & 5* guys, and we still compete well against them. This should only help OU’s brand going forward, especially if we beat Saban next year. The future is looking bright.
Assuming Nick to UT is accurate a more important question for the immediate future is does he coach in the Sugar bowl against us? I like the competition and am excited for the game – hoping they wouldn’t have the cop out IF we were to beat them. Not saying we will at all, but am curious about the situation…Isn’t typical historical data that he wouldn’t and he’d be immediately on the recruiting trail? Who would he take with him? Who would stay behind? THere are a hundred questions that follow behind thisline of thinking and would love some answers/best guesses to these if this report ends up being true soon! Thanks!
Saban going to sign an extension with Bama. If we only knew every wild twist and turn it would be absolute GOLD to read.
Time for yall to find better sources. IJS.
Yeah, this rumor is starting to look a little bit flimsy. Still love this site, and all the work these guys do though.
RMFT!
