JY’s Drive Thrillers and Killers | OU vs. Kansas

DRIVE THRILLER: On this play, you couldn’t ask for a more well blocked power play.  This is just straight ahead, pull your guard around and get north and south.  The blue line illustrates the great wall that gets opened up, and bell’s off to the races.

DRIVE KILLER: Irwin pulling around on power, but misses the player circled in blue.  You’ll see in a lot of these shots, how close we are to busting some big ones in the run game.  If Irwin blocks this guy cleanly, then Ford can get a head of steam to the goal post.  He may even break it.  The second picture shows the player Irwin missed, and Bronson turning around like oh crap!

DRIVE THRILLER AND KILLER: This play was blocked perfectly, and Ford reads it perfectly but…
Untitled_032
Ford fumbles this beautifully blocked play. If he holds on to the ball he might have scored.

DRIVE THRILLER: Couldn’t ask for a better blocked play!  Look at the wall of white jerseys at the top of the screen.  Bell gets up in there for a gain of 8.
Untitled_035
DRIVE KILLER: On ths play, Tyrus, who I’ve pointed at with the blue arrow, is in the process of running his man by the hole.  Damien needs to read this block and get behind Tyrus instead of going in front of him right into the defender.  There’s nobody home if he does, and he has the speed to kill. Damien needs to read hats better. Cut off Tyrus’ back in you gone!

DRIVE KILLER: On the bootleg here, Bell has to understand he only has a couple of guys in the pattern.  If it’s not there, take off!  He waits a couple of seconds too long and instead of attacking the defense on a 2nd and 6 play, he allows the defender to get there.
Untitled_039
In this second shot of the bootleg (below), had Bell took off running after the play wasn’t there, the defender who I’ve circled along with Bell, doesn’t have a chance to get up on him.  You can see the huge run lanes if Bell just get’s north and south.  Gotta believe he gets positive yards going against an undersized db.

DRIVE KILLER: In this picture (below) Bell goes one gap too far outside. You can see OU running the qb power game again.  Bell wants to get outside, when he just needs to get vertical and trust Nila.  You can see his weight shifted slightly outside, but can see the lane opened if he just gets north and south.  Get up in there and we’re gashing them!
Untitled_041
Below is the same play if Bell doesn’t get too far outside.  The DB’s would have been getting punished had he gotten vertical.
Untitled_043
DRIVE KILLER: While this one probably doesn’t break for a td, Damien has to be more disciplined.  He needs to be getting straight ahead on this play, but wants to stretch it out one gap too far.  The three blue arrows show the players he ultimately cuts into.  I wasn’t a math major in college but I know it’s easier to take on one db in the hole than it is three defenders outside.  Get up in there!
Untitled_049
DRIVE THRILLER: Clay just doing what clay does.  He sets up Irwin’s block nicely and is able to scoot around the end for about six yards.  His patience is nice to watch.  He needs more touches.
Untitled_070
DRIVE THRILLER: And Clay again. There doesn’t appear to be much there, but Clay with his signature patience and staying with the design of the play is able to squirt through there and get the first down.  This is like running through that gauntlet machine the backs practice on.

Tomorrow I’ll try to look at more of Blake Bells play as well as how we are benefitting from using TEs more.

The Football Brainiacs note to the reader: This play analysis is meant solely as an attempt to bring our readers closer to what’s happening on the field. This is not intended to demean or deprecate any player or the coaches. We all made mistakes and we all made plays just like any one of these fine young men. It’s part of the game and it is part of life and we wish them nothing but the best on the field and off.
