Report: Former Texas Tech Quarterback Baker Mayfield To Enroll At Oklahoma
According to a report from the Austin American-Statesman’s Danny Davis, Texas Tech quarterback Baker Mayfield has plans to enroll at Oklahoma and attempt to walk-on to the football team.
Mayfield you might remember declared his desire to transfer from Tech earlier this month with the only reasons reported to date being a “miscommunication” between himself and the Tech coaching staff.
However, there is a considerable caveat to that report from Davis who also states that Mayfield has yet to actually speak with the Oklahoma coaching staff about his intentions to enroll/walk-on.
Which is important for a variety of reasons, perhaps the most important being that as things stand today, the Sooners project to have five scholarship quarterbacks on campus next year. Possibly even five on campus for spring practices if Justice Hansen chooses to enroll early.
It would be difficult to get three quarterbacks meaningful snaps during practice let alone five or possibly even six were Mayfield to make the move to Norman. And that is without even taking into consideration that the starting quarterback job could potentially be wide open coming into the spring, so those practice snaps would become all the more valuable.
If he has in fact not yet spoken with the Oklahoma coaching staff, this could all go away rather quickly if Bob Stoops were to say “Thanks, but no thanks” considering the depth they currently have at the position. Of course the flip side to that being one, or even possibly two, of the quarterbacks currently on the roster decide to transfer.
If there is any position on your roster you never want to assume you’ll be fine at from a depth standpoint, it’s the quarterback position. Whether it’s transfers, injuries, poor play, or whatever, things can change in a hurry at that particular position and you never want to leave yourself with a shortage of options if possible. However, there is always the case to be made for having too many cooks in the kitchen as the saying goes.
We are trying to confirm the situation from inside the program so we’ll continue to update things as information becomes available.

I can always count on you to get me late breaking info
You can. That “other” site apparently not so much now that I’m over here. 🙂
When do you get a cartoon face at the top of the page? Is there a probation period, do you have to sit out a year or is it under appeal?
It’s in the works. And I can assure you a cartoon version can only improve upon this ugly mug I got.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder Jordan.

Agreed. Its just whether or not its a 6 pack pretty or gallon of bourbon pretty.
don’t forget the infamous “pony keg ” 🙂
Barring multiple transfers by our existing QB corps, I don’t see any reason why OU would be interested. I don’t believe he would be an upgrade to any of our current QB’s.
I tend to agree. Very little about this makes sense, at least given what we think we know today. Still though, if he wants to walk-on then there seems to be very little risk on OU’s part.
Really? You think Blake throws a better ball? You think Knight throws a more accurate ball? Kendall- no chance at all that he’s better.
Do y’all remember the early Switzer days? They’d have 5+ QBs on the roster, and let them all compete. Heck, let him walk-on. If he’s better than the rest, he starts? If he’s not, he’s either a “willing” back-up, or he transfers.
decent points, but back in the barry days, there were no scholarship/roster limits. with the triple option, you better have a stable of qb’s to go along with a stable of rb’s. nowadays you’ve got limits. if this is serious(that he wants to come), you either change your offense back to what you were runnin or keep implementing the zone read. i think if knight starts vs bama and does well/wins, might as well dance with who brung ya
Exactly. If he wants to come as a walk-on, What does OU have to lose? I love a kid with that much confidence and not afraid of competition.
I wouldn’t mind him being a preferred walk on or some such status. IMO he has better passing skills than the three guys we’ve seen perform this year.
I don’t know if you can tell a guy that shown he can play don’t come? Maybe you can, but the only thing I don’t understand is that based off recruiting it is obvious we are moving to a pistol/zone read offense so why would he want to come to OU? Also why do you make that decision without talking to coaches? If I wanted to leave a school I actually played at and go another I would at least ask coaches if they would give me a chance. Makes me think this is some kind of bait or bluff that mayfield has thrown out there. Interesting either way.
By the way what is the thought on this LB Bond? I don’t remember reading anything on this guy but sounds like a real fit.
Bond & Striker opposite one another s/b one hell of a pass-rush duo. And Bond is obviously much bigger thus much more well-suited to holding up against the run.
Watching how our QB situation plays out going into next year will be interesting enough, regardless of whether or not Mayfield some how winds up here. Makes my head spin, thinking about it.
like sands through the hour glass, my friend
Stoops commented on the situation as much as he can early this evening on the radio.
Coach speak if I’m guessing
I was thinking the same. If you’re trying to recruit a QB (Gerhart) then you probably don’t want them to know you’re bringing in anymore.
I don’t disagree in the slightest, just trying to get what’s available out there for the people.
You always got our back Jordan, keep it up.
Not sure how much of a contender Bell is anymore. Thompson just looks fragile. If I had a choice between Mayfield and Gerhart I’d take Mayfield- he has shown he can play.
OU JJ will smack you down if she sees you lovin’ on Mayfield
I’m not saying I am a fan of his. If what the Brainiacs have reported that OU is looking at a guy named Gerhart for QB is something they are serious about, it would just make more sense to allow Mayfield to walk on and save the scholarship for another position. Sounds like Gerhart is a project at best; not the case with Mayfield.
Oh I agree, I don’t think a full stable can ever be a bad thing. I hate it when we don’t have a solid backup at any position.
Me neither. Especially when there is no clear cut #1.
This may be a moot point. ESPN article said Tech will not grant him a release (from what I don’t know since he is still without a scholly) or permission to go to another Big 12 team.
There are rules I believe that even apply to walk ons. Something like they don’t have to sit out a year but do have to be granted permissions and I think there is something about they can’t transfer to a school who had recruited them in the past.
He can walk-on wherever the heck he wants. TTU can’t stop him from that, only from taking a scholly at certain schools. The only problem is if they don’t release him he loses a year of eligibility (but i think he could redshirt…maybe).
These rules are starting to look like the tax code
Lol….. What a flow chart that would be!
Mayfield’s abilities are overstated. He wouldn’t have the strongest arm nor would he be the fastest or most athletic QB. Trevor is the best of both worlds out of the guys we have including if Mayfield is in the fold. He left TTU because he wasn’t named the starter. He got pulled from multiple games and didn’t beat a team with a pulse. He had 12 tds and 9ints, not exactly great. Sure, he dinked and dunked his way to plenty of yards in a high volume passing attack, BUT only 6.8 YPA.
For comparison:
Bell: 12 tds 5ints, wins over TTU, ND and the comeback against OSU. 7.01 YPA in an offense that our fans would say never throws down field. 4% lower completion percentage but a HIGHER QB Rating and Raw and Adjusted QBR as well.
So a guy who most would say isn’t our QB of the future had better statistics and better wins than Mayfield. Knight did not have better stats in the passing game, but showed much improvement and can run the zone read very well. I believe Knight is the QB of the future and Mayfield would just rot on the bench anyway.
I say there is zero reason to take the kid. None. Get Hansen in and you already don’t have enough snaps for 5 QBs that will be on campus in the spring.
There is obviously a reason why he came out of a high powered Texas HS and didn’t even have a D1 offer(or none that I know about)
