Later this week I’ll break down two of the same plays, one run by Clay and one run by Williams in order to help y’all see how Clay’s patience and intelligence is allowing him to have a lot of success. But for now we’ll look at how the combination of his instincts and athleticism led to the big TD in the 4th q against TCU.
Clay’s huge run was a combination of a few things:
1. we caught their playside safety in a blitz
2. we blocked it very well
3. their linebacker (#41) filled one gap too far inside.
4. Clay is a smart player and saw their safety creeping up on the snap. He knew he had to get north and south in a hurry to outrun him, and when he did that, he caught the backer cheating inside, and broke it open to show some very surprising speed.
This play was as much about Clay’s intellectual ability which NFL GMs will love as much as his physical ability.
Oh yeah, check Boykin on the sideline after the run!
And Coach Tiff saying “up top!”

Very good breakdown and the pics compliment the post nicely!
Thanks! I’m always happy to take credit for JY’s work 🙂
786, thanks I really appreciate it! Are there any other plays that come to mind from this weekend that you’d like us to dissect?
Good stuff JY! What happened on that drive by TCU after Clay scored? Was it defensive breakdown or did TCU play good offense? Seemed like OU was still celebrating Clay’s touchdown and all of a sudden TCU scored. I know there was a massive hold on Boykin’s TD run but what happened on the long pass?
Ace just posted some good breakdowns on the busts we had. After reading these, it gives you a lot to feel good about. The mental aspect of it we can polish up. The guys are playing very hard, so if they prepare that hard as well, we’ll weed out these types of mistakes.
