FOOTBALL

I’ve always found it humorous how these national guys are so quick to ridicule Bob after losses, then are the same people constantly propping him up for other jobs/telling us why he should leave OU. Hypocritical much? Regardless, there’s no way in hell Bob is taking the Michigan job. (Yahoo)

Personally, I think this game is much more on the shoulders of Mike Stoops and the OU defense, but this story suggests the pressure is on Trevor Knight. (USA Today)

Cool spot with ‘Sooner Dave’ (SSTV)

Thought this was pretty cool. OU asked some players what made them decide on coming to Norman. (Sooner Sports)

I’m not hip to this junk food. Is this a big deal?

Kind of old, but still some funny ones. (some NSFW language at the very, very end)

Very much in on Anna Kendrick. And unabashed Pitch Perfect fan. Can’t wait for the sequel! Deal with it.

I’ve never seen a Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter (not that the two are related) movie.

CONSISTENCY has been the problem at QB and in the coaching booth all season. What to do and when to do it . Play conservative or ‘lights out’ . Take a chance or not. We’ve discussed all aspects to adnaseum the past 5 weeks. Which OU teams shows up Saturday ? I don’t have a clue but hope it is the one that includes a game plan to ‘play all out’, hold nothing back, and ‘take no prisoners’. No reason not to since all preseason goals have been erased. But will the staff do it ? Who knows . My heart says OU–my head says Baylor easily. Who knows now ? I suspect we all will know early in the 1st quarter come Saturday.

    • Boomer4life says:

Need to get that head checked. Sooners route the baby bears in an epic ass whooping event on Owen feild. BOOM, that just happen!

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

I’ve had both & while the Taki’s are very spicy. They are also extremely salty.. Tough to eat a lot in 1 sitting..

  • Sooner Ray says:

Sooner Dave seems like a pretty cool dude but hey, Isn’t anyone who puts Sooner in front of their name on the cool list? 🙂

    • Super Keith says:

      True “Sooner” Ray.

Seriously though, David Smith has overcome a severe stuttering issue. The kid doesn’t know what the word “quit” means. I’d love a team full of Sooner Daves.

      • paganpink says:

Danged right Keith. He’s just so grateful for his chance, and so hard working and proud of his team. Many schools have guys like him as the core of great teams since you have a guy who isn’t a knucklehead and in trouble all the time serving as an inspiration as to how you should be approaching the opportunity to play. And that isn’t meant to infer that he is talentless like some “Rudy” thing- I would love to see them give him the ball even more!

    • soonermusic says:

I was surprised to hear that he’s a “full sized” back, around 220, I’d thought he was smaller. I won’t be at all surprised if he earned himself a few more snaps sometime soon with that performance, running like that and demonstrating ball security.

      • Sooner Ray says:

I wish I knew what’s been keeping him off the field, looks like a solid back. He obviously works his butt off in practice judging by the reaction of his teammates. Makes me wonder if he just has trouble with assignments.

        • soonermusic says:

Maybe, but I haven’t heard anything like that. They said that he’s been a scout team heavyweight. I suspect it’s just “timing,” being on the squad with Ross, Perine, and Ford…

    • Boomer4life says:

Let me…… check…….yes! According to my sources anyone with Sooner out front of their name is automatically on the respective cool list.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Great video on ES19. I still can’t believe THE Striker had to market himself to us. Finally, an all american LB that gets comparison with Boz. So proud to have this guy don the crimson and cream.

  • Jed says:

Okay, so we can put to bed the theory that recruits these days don’t care about tradition.
Also, Jordan, if you haven’t read any of the LOTR trilogy, pick one up and start reading at random. Tolkien is a beautiful master of the language. You’ll appreciate it, writing the amount that you do.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I’m sure I would. I’ve read all the Game of Thrones books and LOVED those. I realize they aren’t necessarily of the same vein per se, but I’d expect some crossover between the respective fan bases of both.

      • paganpink says:

Tolkien is far better, Jordan. You have to read them!

        • Jed says:

Not surprising, since Tolkien was an Oxbridge prof, but OU used LOTR to teach writing style in the mid 1980’s. Whether you like the stories or not, the writing itself, at a technical level, is like poetry or great music or a classic car; it’s just put together so damn well that it’s a pleasure to read.

          • soonermusic says:

I’ll “third” or what ever comes after “second” this recommendation. Tolkien was the real deal.

  • soonerinks says:

Remember when when you never had any doubt that OU would not only win, but hang 50. My confidence meter is not quite that high anymore. I still think the Sooners will win every game but not quite as surprised when they lose.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

I don’t believe those days will ever return. Nowadays, all we can do is believe OU will win IF the team plays as it should and we don’t know this until game time. Due to the performance throughout the year (and previous years), we’ve learned that is not a given for many of the games Bob coaches. Bob always brings the gun to the knife fight, and to me it’s just a question of if it’s going to jam or not.

      • soonermusic says:

Pretty sure those days never actually existed…

        • Jed says:

Mid ’80’s came awfully close. Good Lord were us Sooner fans arrogant back then!
Ah, yes! Pelting the field with Oranges. Pelting the opposing team with Oranges.
Raucus crowds and very little chance for opponents to win. Bosworth leading the defense in packing howling like wolves after a sack. Happy, happy memories.

          • soonermusic says:

Three great seasons, two with Bos and one without. Great times. Aikman, Hollieway, Keith Jackson, Ricky Dixon, and on down the line. Seriously great players.

        • soonerinks says:

Yeah, they really did. Guess I am showing my age but went to OU during 73 and 74. Mid 70’s to early 80’s and the mid 80’s were absolutely great ball teams (did seem that we always had a game every season where we fumbled the game away though).

          • soonermusic says:

I hope you know I’m just having fun with you on this. My honest response to you was based on both parts of the argument, though. Even in those glory days, I never felt sure that we were gonna win, and you hit on exactly the problem. The fumble monster always had the potential to derail any given game. Additionally there was always the specter of wackiness, even in 75, potentially the best team ever, OU went out and laid an inexplicable egg against Kansas in Norman, and but for two super human last second plays by J. Washington would have blown the whole thing by doing it again the following week at MO.

Memory is a funny thing on the subject of “hangin’ half a hundred.” Barry only had two seasons where he did it more than 3 times. Here’s the breakdown:

Barry had 27 games hangin half a hunnerd; Stoops has done it 43 times not counting this year. (15 seasons each)
Barry had 5 seasons with zero “hangs” including 4 years in a row. In his entire career, Stoops has done that just once.

            Compare the two best seasons:

The only two seasons Barry went over 3 games (Stoops has 4 seasons) were 86 with 4 games, and 87 with 5. In 87 OU only lost 1 game.
In 07 Stoops had 5 games over 50, and in 08 a whopping 9 (two more at 49 and 45). In 08 OU only lost 1 game.

As I said, this is just fun, cause you can say offenses are different, but so is parity and unlike the old days, even the downtrodden teams have a lot of good players.

But if hangin’ half a hundred is the metric you want to talk about, it’s not even close. If that’s what you like to see, and who doesn’t, “these are the good old days.”

          • soonerinks says:

Very good read and I agree with you. Defense is probably the big difference now versus Barry’s teams. OU defenses were just nasty in the mid-70’s and mid-80’s and Stoop’s defense was very good in early 2000’s, not so much now. Of course, offenses are much more proficient now. Remember the KU game very well, was sitting in the north end zone and the only time I can remember the Sooner fans boo’ing our offense as they took the field for the last time at home (and that was a great offense).

          • soonermusic says:

I’m sure I was at the KU game as well, I had season tix that year, I think I was on the South 5 (maybe 10) yd line press box side half way up. Don’t really remember it nearly so well, but I completely remember standing outside a job in OKC the following week with a radio hearing, “4th and 1, own 29, 4:20 seconds left” knowing that if OU didn’t make it MO’d run out the clock. And then having the radio explode into almost unintelligible static as M. Trepps started screaming into the mic.

    • EasTex says:

I remember those days. To this day no one despises ND more than me. I can still the pain in my gut when 47 didn’t become 48.

  • kt-raida says:

Jordan, the photo of the “first human being taken” can you explain that I just see a town.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

Google, “first photograph taken” and the photo will show up in the results. I believe the photo is the first one ever with a human being in it, not sure though.

      • Jed says:

Lower left on the pathway. First human in a photograph. Due to long exposure times, it was hard to photograph anything that moved.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Just a random tweet that found it’s way into my TL yesterday. No real significance, or I should probably say relevance, other than at the moment it stuck me as kind of cool so I included it here.

    • Thomas Lenard says:

It probably hit the internet since Pawn Stars had the question as one of its trivia questions, something to the effect of “What was the first person to ever have his photo taking doing?” The answer was getting a shoeshine.

  • ND52 says:

    Cougar Town? Pitch Perfect? WTF?

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Let me go ahead and say The Hobbit looks epic….wow.

In addition, fail videos never get old!

    Eric Striker….the guy is incredible.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

That LOTR trailer is incredible. Is there a word better than ‘epic’?

      • paganpink says:

I think we’ve had some of those giant rock trolls posting on here lately! Greatest series of books ever, in my opinion.

        • EasTex says:

I read the books in the 70’s after Led Zeppelin references. Couldn’t put them down. I’ve enjoyed the movies, but the books were so well written I compare everything on the screen to the original source.

  • Sooner_Ace says:

From the yahoo article JE refrenced:
“He’s under no pressure – outside of the depths of message board frustration.”

See we have a voice 🙂 lol

    • Sooner_Ace says:

Wait i read a yahoo article?!? face palm!

      • Jordan Esco says:

I actually think Wetzel is a pretty good writer, but this is just pointless. This same article, or some version of it, has already been written a hundred different times. And none of them change the fact Stoops isn’t going anywhere.

  • HoustonChiver says:

Blake Bell’s answer just shows you how dedicated to this program is. His whole answer for coming to OU was about being a QB and developing as a QB, now he’s versatile TE catching touchdowns and making blocks!

  • soonermusic says:

Not sure if this was already linked, but just in case, its from earlier in the week and talks about how David Smith is a go to guy for hosting recruits, among other things. Cool article.
David Smith Made the Most of His Long Awaited Chance

  • I read somewhere that Minkah Fitzpatrick is showing interest any truth to that?

  • Iheartoufootball says:

How can you not be all in on Anna Kendrick? I swear, I’m going to be the middle-aged man in the front of the line when PP2 comes out and I’m pretty positive that I will not be alone. She has 2 musicals (in the traditional vein) coming out in the next few months: Into the Woods and The Last Five Years.

Oh yeah – we will top Baylor this weekend mostly due to our superior safety coverage. And I really hope that we see Awesome Trevor instead of Average Trevor.
