OU had Darlington pulling to block the DE. I know this isn’t new, but I can’t remember the last time I saw a center do it and not a guard, and don’t ever recall an OU center pulling.
Of all the beautiful things perine did, the two things that impressed me most are 1) the slide before going out of bounds to keep the clock moving 2) handing the ball to the ref after every carry. This kid just gets it and he makes it easy to root for him.
When I played there was a linebacker on my hated rivals team who was always very gracious after each play whether I ran him over or otherwise. I hated him for it!
OL had a little trouble opening holes early on, but wore out the defense as the game went on and eventually dominated the second half. Poor Sanchez was overmatched trying to take on a big, physical body like Kevin White.
We do, but it’s a rarity. We flipped Aaron Colvin to man Lockett when we were getting torched in 1st half last year vs. KSU( Actually, Colvin convinced Mike he wanted to switch, like a boss) . I agree that J.Thomas should have come in, esp on the last drives
Sanchez is a warrior. Does not have great speed or size but his technique is very good. Unfortunately, he is probably going to be playing hurt all year.
What’s incredible is Amari cooper said Colvin is the best corner he ever faced and Colvin was hurt all last year. I’m not saying Sanchez is as good as Colvin but he is pretty damn good. He got beat a few times last night but I think that has a lot to do with not being able to get his hands on receivers.
As much as I love blowout wins, this Sooner team needed a gut check game to stay motivated. With the bye week this is a chance to get some guys healed up (Ford, Tapper, etc) and get ready for TCU and Texas coming up. Love how the defense responded, last WVU drive excluded, in the second half. And we are loaded at RB for the near future.
I loved seeing the way this team reacted to adversity. In every NC run, you will have at least a couple of games where your back is to the wall and you have to will yourself a win. Sooners responded in a big way.
In 2000 it was AtM and that Torrance Marshall INT. Though getting through that brutal stretch with Nebraska, KSU and Texas was also important.
After the bye week this squad has TCU in Ft. Worth, Texas and then hosts KSU. Biggest games until that Nov. 8 showdown with Baylor. Just gotta stay focused and hungry.
Yes, man I can still see big Torrance looking like a RB returning that interception. I really, really like this team. This OL is getting better every game (Savage is looking really good), Perine took a big step and Alex Ross finally showed up, a great DL and LB’ers, Hayes and Wilson are growing up and hopefully Sanchez will recover. Our WR’s need to step it up but I like the way KJ is coming on. Neal is very inconsistant but if he develops some soft hands he is a very good runner. Other than Shep I don’t see anyone who can stretch the field, although Mead might be that guy but I don’t remember seeing him since LaTech. Right now, I think OU and ALA are the 2 best teams in the country.
Amari Cooper? You mean the one ESPN was falling all over themselves last night saying “It’s time to start the Heisman campaign.” Along with pumping up all the individual running efforts of sec players. And what did they leave out of the graphic I saw? hmmm…. geez they are ridiculous. But I guess we know that by now.
I thought the Uni’s looked amazingly awesome! Love those crimson pants, and having OKLAHOMA on the front of jersey! Hopefully concerns over our uniform’s and luck of game can be dispelled somewhat now..
Perine, I can’t say I’m surprised, but sooo stinking happy for him. I have been waiting for a back to get 20-30 carries, and man did he find a rhythm and produce. Its an absolute joy watching with excitement and anticipation on EACH of his runs. BOOM!
Tough environment led to a few miscues on both sides of ball I would say, but I totally agree with Ed Cotter below, we needed a GAME. Glad we finally tested ourselves.
Perfect time for bye week. Rest up, sharpen up, and prepare for the froggies and shorthorns.
Great start to the season folks!!! Pretty sure we can all agree on that.
Yep. This offense has morphed into my ideal. Brutal power run game with PA. When TK gets better at his progressions and begins finding his receivers, who in turn catch the freakin’ football, this will be a nightmare scenario for DCs and defenders.
I thought the uni’s looked a lot better than I had expected. But almost fast forwarded past the replay on one of the sports channel shows, because I didn’t recognize em…
They weren’t bad. I kept thinking I was watching Fresno State or Wisconsin, except a good football team was wearing them. The white pants would have looked good, and that cream OU with the white shirts was kind of weird.
Still, if the players and recruits enjoyed them, then awesome!
Me too, I thought they looked pretty cool. Don’t want a steady diet but certainly don’t mind the change up. The new PR guys for OU are doing an excellent job and the program is starting to get a little buzz again.
They looked crimson to me. I really like the crimson alt. helmets as long as they are just every now and then. I know they haven’t worn them yet but I don’t like the white or “cream” helmets. The alternate crimson helmets with the alternate home jerseys and pants would be sweet once in a blue moon.
I can’t even bitch about the ESPN and their agenda anymore. We all get it, they have a contract and they want to make money.
We are never gonna be Hollywood/USC, South Beach/Miami, NIKE U/Oregon, Vatican U/Notre Dame, or ESPN/SEC U. But win out and we are in the playoffs. That simple. We are OU we don’t need a hype machine. We got rings.
FYI- Alex Ross leads the nation in KO Return at 45 yards a return. A 100 yard return helps that average quite a bit.
Also, with Ross’s 100 yard KOR, this is the first time that OU has had two 100 yard plays (Wilson’s INT Return) in the same season.
Anyone know the OU record or even NCAA record for most 80 yard plus plays in one season? So far Ross has that 82 yard TD run, the 100 KOR TD and an 80 yard KOR. On his longest run yesterday he looked pissed when he got tackled. That would have been for 80+ as well.
Yeah, too much time on my hands.
When he got tackled on that run, he showed some passion. Loved seeing it and really hope he gets his running game going. We will need him before the season is over. The guy is awesome returning kicks, one crease and he is gone. I don’t know if he is suited for punt returns, never quite understood what the difference is.
Wiggle. You like the breakaway speed, but punt returning you gotta be choosy with seams and have that agility. Remember Jeremy Bloom at CU? I feel like his excellence in the PR game could be attributed to his excellence doing downhill skiing and moguls.
He reminds me of a freight train when he gets going. At top speed an arm tackle doesn’t cut it.
He is the kind of cat that can explode for a marathon td at any moment. Putting him at KO returner was a brilliant move. With several seconds to build up speed he is a speed demon out there that’s too strong to derail.
Via CrimsonAndCreamMachine – “The (second half) adjustments manifested themselves in Oklahoma’s defensive front putting pressure on the edges forcing WVU to go into max protect without releasing the backs. The result left Trickett without an extra receiver or two to target downfield.” Did anyone else see this? I wondered how we kept them out of endzone.
Yes. The play where Grissom got his sack came so,after he shoved a running back three yards past the quarterback. If you notice the safeties were helping the corners, two Sooners near the reciever targeted by Trickett. If WVU was on,y using 5 lineman to protect the QB then safeties would be in man or cover one deep.
Hoover (Tulsa World resident jerk) actually has nice things to say now. “It’s a new day at Oklahoma. The Sooners (4-0) are in the hunt for a spot in the new four-team College Football Playoff, and on this night they rode the broad shoulders of a freshman running back so strong and so powerful he simply casts fear in defensive players trying to tackle him.
With a normally ferocious defense and an inconsistent passing game and a massive, experienced and deep offensive line, Samaje Perine may be the final ingredient in the Sooners’ playoff formula.”
Almost got it right. TK and the receivers need to get it together and be more consistent with the passing game so better opponents pay for 8 in the box. While impressive, WVU isn’t that salty on defense.
Been following the site since the Sugar Bowl but this is my first post. OU alum 79′. Great and informative articles here. Its the best site I have found for college football, and especially OU.
About the game. Looked to me like Holgie really got out coached in the second half. Those were great adjustments to hold that WV O down for 28 minutes to just a FG. Perine – no words. Have not seen that much power since Markus Dupree.
Back when Marcus was a freshman, a good friend of mine who was the radio engineer at WIBW in Topeka arranged for me to fly down with KSU broadcasting team as a birthday present. I got to sit in the press box with Steve Physioc and John Cadillac during the broadast. Got the pleasure of seeing Marcus break an 80 yard TD against KSU. It was very hard keeping quiet!
I heard Switzer say he was probably the best overall physical football specimen he had ever seen or recruited. I don’t doubt it. Too bad the personal problems that kept him from being a true star. I was there with Pruitt and Sims, and they were truly special, but MD was amazing. This kid Perine just might turn into another Emmitt Smith.
I went to KSU my freshman and sophomore years while working for the Santa Fe Railway. I was transferred to OKC and attended OU in 73 and 74 while working at Nowers yard in OKC on 3rd shift. Saw some really great players and was lucky enough to see them practice after classes and met some great former players while sitting in the stands watching practice. Great memories!
Yes, Switzer could sure recruit great athletes. He had a wonderful eye for talent and rarely got in the way of his assistants. Of course, when he went after school’s tv rights, the NCAA did everything in their power to destroy the program. Came pretty close.
I think the NCAA still holds a grudge against Georgia and OU. Switzer was smart enough to recruit African Americans out of Texas before anyone else. With their success that just brought more and better players. Of course, all the moms loved Switzer which didnt hurt either.
Thanks, yes, its the best site I’ve seen for x’s and o’s. Its not the normal fan banter and obviously the football knowledge here is head and shoulders above other sites I have seen.
Our edge is so tough this year love the scheme with grissom on the boundary and striker on the wide side the backend got really tested tonight but after half time we made thw adjustments needed defensively and Perine did the rest!!
Griss and Striker are a hella pair. Was really a bit surprised and elated at how the D stood up to the test. Worried about Sanchez. Thomas did alright but Hayes is really emerging.
USA Today Coaches Poll came out. We landed at #3, not that it means that much right now. Funny how Bama is holding that #2 spot, although they had an impressive 2nd half against a fairly average FL team.
He seems to lack vision and patience…that’s my beef w/him. It seems as though he just runs into the OL instead of letting the blocks develop. He also needs to work on playing at pad level. He’s too big and strong to be getting killed as much as he does. Playing at pad level would help him with that.
Honestly I don’t dislike his game but out of the pistol it seems stretch run plays are harder to run but I don’t know that as a fact it’s just an assumption since we don’t run stretch plays the way you can run them out of ace formations.
Ross needs different run plays than ford and perine. But I love Ross’s ability when he has a lane no one will catch him.
I love the kid and wish nothing but the best for him, but I agree with a lot of what Toats said. I really think he needs to give the plays time to develop on some of his runs. He’s a flat out stud in the KR, but at this moment in time Perine and Ford are both see the play better.
I agree with you about Perine and Ford. But don’t sell Ross short. There was a drive in the first half and another in the second half where he looked very good, I thought. And “don’t look now,” but his per carry average this game was basically the same as Perine’s (7.0 to 7.1). (that’s not including the k.o. return and 19 yards receiving as well)
Ross did have a few nice runs where he looked more patient and took what the defense gave him. If he continues to be patient he’s going to break a lot of big runs.
I’m not trying to sell him short at all, that’s just been what I’ve seen so far. I’ve made comments several times about how I though he could be special, both here and on the other site before we all abandoned it. I don’t think you’re going to find many people who disagree with me on the statement that at the moment Perine and Ford see the play developing better.
Wilson and Hayes are proving to be very valuable to this defense, too bad they couldn’t have been more dominating before they were seniors. The secondary is an area we will need to continue to recruit well and develop early.
The pass game must improve and improve in a hurry. Trevor and the receivers haven’t seemed to be on the same page this season. Knight needs to go through reads better and look off defenders better. Receivers need to catch the damn ball when they can get their hands on it. KJ is becoming that second guy and Neal needs to be better being a Junior out there. At least one of the younger guys other than KJ needs to step up and play. If the big wide outs aren’t ready then we had better involve the tight end.
Lines on both sides are playing solid football and the run game is just downright powerful.
Just a little more quality in the pass game and this team can play with anyone in the country, I haven’t seen anyone yet that I think could beat us if we play a solid game for 4 quarters.
The thing they must be doing is holding back Trevor knight and are forcing him to try to develop a great qb/wr relationship for Neal and kj we know shep is already a great safety blanket for knight. I just hope we don’t hold back so long that we end up losing a game before letting knight run.
The running backs are special though and I liked the calls for bell taking a snap at qb and knight catching a pass those are plays heupel will be able to tinker with and sprinkle in each game.
It will sure give the DE’s an OLB’s something to think about when they see a reverse, could set up some nice plays if it slows down their rush/pursuit.
If you see the play where Neal throws to TK from behind, Bell was in the back of the end zone uncovered waving both arms.
It’s all good…..they beat up on me all the time. But since its so 1 sided, I wait till after the game. Its a work feud:-) Last year was the best. Their crib.Cold enough to freeze beer and Blake delivered.
I’d just like to take the opportunity to say how especially satisfying it was to see our most prolific defender knock smack-talking Kevin White end over end on his very last play of the game. Just the big fat cherry on top of the sundae.
I just want to point one thing out because I heard twice this week “kstate has the best home field advantage in the big 12” and “wvu has the best home field advantage in the big 12”. Do they have 5 losses at home in the last 16 years? I don’t think so. I realize our crowd is criticized often for being somewhat unenthusiastic but I believe 87-5 speaks for itself that ou is the toughest place to play.
WVU always had one of college football’s greatest home field advantages, especially in night games.
Now they have lost nine home games in three-plus years.
Since the start of the 2012 season WVU is 8-7 at
home. Under Holgorsen they are 13-9, but have lost four of their last
five home games. (The Magic Is Gone)

I just spilt my Count Chocula.
The best part of Sunday morning, always look forward to seeing.
Gus and Charles do a great job, love when we are on Fox.
Our O Line last night – A+
OU had Darlington pulling to block the DE. I know this isn’t new, but I can’t remember the last time I saw a center do it and not a guard, and don’t ever recall an OU center pulling.
I might be wrong, but I thought I saw Ikard pulling a couple of times last year.

Agree… Plays like a Sooner…a Champion
And he was helping the players up after running over them. Shoulder tapping every one. This guy is for real.
Plus it must be hard to have to tackle him a second time, but when he helps you back to your feet, you can’t even use anger as a motivator.
I wondered why they didn’t put Julian Wilson on him. I know Zach is our best cover corner but I feel like Wilson has the strength to body up any wr.
We don’t flip our corners but I thought we would see more of Jordan Thomas to see if he could push white around a bit.

I am a big fan of Sanchez and love the way he plays. He will get beat but if you keep coming at him, he will make you pay.
Wondering of Tapper’s injury this morning?
He’s fine
LOL
Kirk Herbstreit @KirkHerbstreit 2h
Here is my latest top 4 for this week.
1. OU
2. Bama
3. Oregon
4. FSU
Remember forget preseason polls-strictly based on results
Is this Herb’s top four? He predicted OU to lose to WVU…. SMH
Sorry “Herby” the bus is all full up and we have no seats for you.
Not a ridiculous upset pick, actually. I was kind of fearing a loss myself…
And to get Mayfield cleared!
I agree. Did Quick even play in this game? I don’t remember seeing him. Will check the participation list.
Quick didn’t play and neither did Tyler Evans. Is Evans hurt? Strange.
He must be. With all that he has been through, that is 1 young man I wish the best.
Yep, I was thinking this needed to be our 2000 @aTm or @osu game.
Perine is a beast… What a game.
The force is strong with this one. Lol
I could watch White get blown up by Striker over and over. He wasn’t talking after that now was he? Punk.
It was sweet. White is an excellent receiver, almost as good as Amari Cooper of Alabama. Kid talks way too much but he can flat out play.
Other than Herbie, I don’t put any credence into what ESPIN says. I only watch ESPN to see the football games and I do appreciate them for that.
Cooper is a ridiculous athlete that leads the FBS in Receptions and yards. 3rd in TDs. ESPN sucks yes but the kid deserves the hype.
I thought the Uni’s looked amazingly awesome! Love those crimson pants, and having OKLAHOMA on the front of jersey! Hopefully concerns over our uniform’s and luck of game can be dispelled somewhat now..

Great start to the season folks!!! Pretty sure we can all agree on that.
BOOMER!
It would be cool to get a cut up of all of Perine’s “trucks” on the WV game.
Just for grins, nest year when Mixon is eligible, OU should come out in the wishbone with Ford, Perine and Mixon to honor the King.
Years I have waited for this. Years.
We have the eligible backs to do it now but I don’t see it happening.
Yep. This offense has morphed into my ideal. Brutal power run game with PA. When TK gets better at his progressions and begins finding his receivers, who in turn catch the freakin’ football, this will be a nightmare scenario for DCs and defenders.
Perine’s the Pinball Wizard. He bounces off defenders and keeps on rolling.
“How do you think he does it?”
“I don’t know.”
“What makes him so good?”
Perine Trucking Co
Love it! Their slogan could be
“We move anything and everything in our way”
I thought the uni’s looked a lot better than I had expected. But almost fast forwarded past the replay on one of the sports channel shows, because I didn’t recognize em…

Me too, I thought they looked pretty cool. Don’t want a steady diet but certainly don’t mind the change up. The new PR guys for OU are doing an excellent job and the program is starting to get a little buzz again.
I hated the unis but i was mistaken. They are pretty cool, esp the helmet
The red pants need to go. White would be way better or at the very least Crimson…but red? horrible.
They looked crimson to me. I really like the crimson alt. helmets as long as they are just every now and then. I know they haven’t worn them yet but I don’t like the white or “cream” helmets. The alternate crimson helmets with the alternate home jerseys and pants would be sweet once in a blue moon.
Woohoo! The samaje vs WV highlights are up!
Did anyone else notice that the color guy got a little more quiet as the game went on? I think that he was shocked at what OU was doing to WV.
Yeah Gus Johnson gets really amped up for those close games. He must’ve realized that that wasn’t where this game was going in the second half.
So, I just checked out ESPN’s weekend highlights. You wanna guess which team didn’t get any?
Who didn’t enjoy the Oline & Perine dominating the end of the 3rd and whole 4th qtrs? That was awesome!
Anybody not rooting for the good guys probably hated it.
I can’t even bitch about the ESPN and their agenda anymore. We all get it, they have a contract and they want to make money.

Winning will take care of the PR media control problem. Everybody should just relax and enjoy the season.
We will always be Oklahoma, and there’s only one.
I’ll take the rings any day of the week.

Can’t remember the guy’s name before Hoover, but I always greatly enjoyed reading his articles. Hoover, I am not a fan.

Has to be.

Don’t forget about Smoke through a Keyhole

I know I heard one of the announcers mention Perine and Marcus Dupree in the same sentence???
He has to show me more than one game and get a song written about him.
Love what Perine’s doing but if you watch the 30 for 30 (great show for many reasons) footage of Marcus I don’t think they compare.
Absolutely LOVE this pic. Game over at this point and Trickett was a while getting up.
That one took that silly smirk he had going off of his face once and for all. Must have been kinda a de ja voo from FSU moment for him.
I remember right after this play thinking, “now Trickett’s trying to buy a flag, acting like he got drilled …” then they showed the replay.
After I saw it, I said, “oh, yeah, he’s not acting … Chuka put the stamp of approval on that guy”. 🙂

I hate tricketts face…he’s doing a good job it’s just his face I just want to punch it.”
LOL…
If there’s one thing I love about Jim Traber on The Animal, it’s his humility when he’s wrong. He manned up after the game and was very gracious.
don’t get the dislike for Ross, the kid can absolutely play some running back
In the open field it is going to take a track star to catch him.
“Perine and Ford see the play developing better. ” Agree.
Ross would be a feature back at so many schools. Fast and talented.
….season’s a third over……..they better get hoppin’ on that te highlight film to show recruits …..has McNamara even stepped on the field for a play……
If we’re not going to let TK run, the better passer should win the job. Hmmm.
If Mayfield was available, TK would be playing much more wide open and we would see his true strengths. RIght now he’s wearing hobbles.
Agreed, I’m almost positive he’s being told not to run. There is no way the desire to run it has left him, as quick as he was to take off last season.
What I loved about that play was that they were inside the 5. Normally if a team runs that they are at least 30 yards out.
Hell hath indeed frozen over:

Got to be a misprint.
I agree
Did someone with sanity get loose at Espin?? Dayuuummmm

Great! Now here comes the target on the back being #1
Oklahoma always has a target on their back. WVU fans are still talking about that fiesta bowl from years ago. We get everyone’s best shot.
Yes we do. The strong survive or you could be in Baton Rude right now. I smell couches burning……hmmmm coming from the South and East…..weird:-)
Really surprised at how empty the stands were at LSU in the 4th quarter. I thought only Texsa fans were that fickle.
We’re still ranked #4, regardless of what the ESPiN power rankings say
Right. None of this matters much unless we win out. Just. Keep. Winning!!
I have this gut feeling that within a few games, kj young is going to overtake Neal as our #2 receiver.
He sure seems to be headed that direction.
Sure like Our Freshman rumbling back! We had a blast at our house!
Oh, my superstitious coffee cup and shirt are 39-3 now. Guess I’ll keep doin it.
2 of my okie lite friends called and want Perine to call in sick for Bedlam……kinda twisted don’t you think?
Perine will be making fresh squeezed Orange juice at bedlam!
Nice Ray……..just nice.
Okie Lite fans and twisted in the same sentence is being redundant, no?
yeah……….maybeeeeeee
Jus’messin’
“I believe 87-5 speaks for itself” Yeah, buddy. Pretty easy calculation there….
Hambone has the Ross TD return up.
Now all we need is a Perine compilation video.
So the bias origin begins on this site………CBS Sports
