La Tech & Tennessee Kickoff Times Announced

Image via NewsOK

Thursday afternoon the Big 12 Conference and University of Oklahoma announced a couple kickoff times for the coming football season.

As you can see from the tweet above, it’s yet another year in which OU fans will be forced to shell out money for a pay-per-view non-conference game. Something many of us were led to believe (even though OU will deny it) would end once OU got their own network. Not so much.

In addition to the Louisiana Tech game, the kickoff time for Oklahoma’s “marquee” non-conference match-up against Tennessee was also announced. The Sooners and Vols will face off in primetime on one of the ESPN/ABC networks. Which may or may not increase the chances of an ESPN GameDay appearance in Norman (if you care about that kind of thing) for the first time since the Notre Dame game back in 2012.

Do you guys know when tickets go on sale? me and a couple buddies were already thinking of going to the tennessee game, but if its going to be a gameday game, we are going for sure.

I doubt you’ll be able to get that game thru the OU box office. May have to go the secondary marketplace route, which if that’s the case you can buy them whenever you want. I was looking a couple weeks back, they weren’t cheap.

I was probably going to just go the stubhub route, but I didnt even think they were on sale yet. Damn, im behind already, and i thought i was being proactive.

        • Jordan Esco says:

They’re out there for sure. You might not actually get them for a while, but I’ve never had an issue buying thru StubHub, fwiw.

thanks for the info man. Now the search for the perfect price/seat combo begins. Hope to see you there!

Good luck! And I hope to be there!

Jordan, would be great to meet you at the Tenn. game. Got my tickets and hotel in Norman. Just need to get the plane tickets.

            Night trips? Me too!

If you’re needing a hotel you’d best book one now.

          • j l says:

We live in bville, no need for a hotel. Just a quick stop by night trips to celebrate the victory and we will be on our way home =) Thanks for the reminder though

I am indifferent about the PPV thing. It would be nice if it was free, but I really have no problem shelling out $40 or so to see the first game of the season.

I do it every year but I would rather give it to OU for a subscription to SSN (something I do not do currently).

Pay-Per-View games are getting old, especially for a team with a lot of hype right now. Not sure how the television contracts are negotiated, maybe someone else could elaborate, but it feels like OU isn’t getting the attention they deserve regionally/nationally. On the other hand, I would love to see GameDay in Norman, would be awesome!

There are 3 tiers to the conference media deals:

Tier 1: The big, nationally televised games (Fox, Fox1, ESPN)

Tier 2: The mid-range, regional games: (Fox College channels, FCS West, Central, etc.)

Tier 3: This is where the PPV comes into play. OU negotiated the right to broadcast one game a year via PPV. All of the proceeds from the broadcast go directly to the school. No revenue sharing. The caveat is that the only games that fall into the Tier 3 catagory are games that the Tier 1 & 2 broadcasting companies pass over. So, La Tech (or last year’s ULM, the previous year’s FAMU) weren’t picked up by any of the big broadcasting companies.

About the only way we would see a season without a PPV game would be if every game OU scheduled was big enough to attract the big broadcasters.

This is what the old contract looked like (I don’t have details handy on the recently negotiated, or “new” deal):

      BIG12

First-tier rights: $480 million, ESPN, eight years through 2015-16
      Second-tier rights: $1.17 billion, FOX, 13 years through 2024-25
      Per-year average: $150 million

      Hope that helps.

7pm kickoff. Fun. Should be a buzz on campus that day for sure, even moreso if ESPN Gameday is there.

Also agree that OU shouldn’t have to have ppv games, no matter who the opponent is. Worse case should be SSN. Bummer.

Personally I’m sick of PPV games. Why does this happen every year? Anybody ever see Texas or Alabama pull this crap?

    • Super Keith says:

I don’t know about Bama, but Texas pulled the biggest PPV scam; The Longhorn Network. Maybe they don’t charge $40 for a game, but if you have the LHN, you’re paying something every month for access…whether you’re a horn fan, or not.

  • blaster1371 says:

Last season if you purchased the PPV game through Soonersports you also got a season long (if not 6 months) subscription to sooner tv. This allowed you to play back all the games as the season progressed as well as from several seasons ago too as well as watch all the press conferences, practice reports and so on. Like others have posted I would rather not pay $40 to see my team play but thought the package deal made it more tolerable.

    • Super Keith says:

I hate PPV in general, but living out-of-state, I thought the SoonersportsTV deal wasn’t bad. As time has passed (since I subscribed for last year’s PPV game), I’ve gotten a lot from the subscription. I’ve listened to a lot of baseball and softball games, and I get to watch all of the network-made coaches programming (that I normally wouldn’t have access to where I live).

It made “biting the bullet” a little easier.
